Statute of Secrecy: Current Status

Following the revelation of magic by James Shepard to Diane Sawyer on the program "ABC 2001", the legal status of the Statute of Secrecy has been uncertain. While the larger nations, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, repealed their ratification of the Statute following the integration of their magical governments in the first decade of the twenty-first century, most countries either revoked the mandate of their formerly independent magical governments, dissolving the entity that was a signatory of the Statute, or made enforcement of the Statute itself illegal.

Like the Statute of Secrecy, the International Confederation of Wizards began its slow dissolution following the revelation of the existence of magic and mages. While the Confederation still exists, it lacks even a fraction of the power it held even at the end of the twentieth century, and there are even calls for its official dissolution or absorption into the United Nations.

Many victims of the enforcement of the Statute of Secrecy have attempted criminal and civil suits against the obliviators that removed their memory of magic. While all criminal cases were thrown out due to the legality of the actions when they occurred, many victims have won lucrative civil suits around the world.
