Belligerence-class cruiser

The Belligerence-class cruisers are a class of warvessels in the Imperial Space Force first ordered in 2027, and are the first class of faster-then-light cruisers to enter service with the Imperial Space Force, replacing the six vessels of the Remembrance-class in active duty. Like the cruisers they replaced, the class is a mixed-role vessel, able to serve as both a long-distance guided missile platform and as a short-range Mobile Infantry assault vessel. Currently only eight vessels are planned, with six having been commissioned as of June, 2033.

While officially termed "cruisers" by the Imperial Space Force, as well as Alliant Techsystems, the vessels' builder, the iconic triangular shape of the class, which it shares with the large Pillar-class drone carriers, has led the class to be called "star destroyers" by the press, pundits, and on social media.

Design

The Belligerence-class cruiser's design was a radical departure from the elongated disks of the preceding Remembrance-class cruisers, which had been designed to mimic the circular forms of the Acrid Empire's City Destroyers. The newer cruisers were also over a hundred meters longer than the previous design. Alliant Techsystems claims that the Star Wars-inspired design was a result of the technologies available for construction as well as the constraints of the completely different method of primary propulsion.

The hull of the Belligerence-class can be decided into three sections, the upper hull, the broadsides, and the lower hull. The upper and lower hull are each a single sheet of nickel-iron alloy, cut from the envelope of a ringo sphere, while the broadsides are a deck-thick section of weapons ports, sensors, and antennas, widening to an over three dozen meter gap at the stern for the massive thruster nozzles required for acceleration within the mass effect field. While this design limits the traversal of the nine dual-barrel 200 mm mass accelerator guns, the rapid roll capability of the vessel is thought to more than make up for this perceived difficulty.

The larger size of the Belligerence-class compared to the preceding Remembrance-class can be attributed to three factors. First, the Belligerence-class has a larger complement, including an attached Mobile Infantry battalion, necessitating a larger habitable volume. Second, the thrusters, while utilizing conjured propellant, unlike twentieth-century rockets, require a larger reactor than the pure arty-grav propulsion of the previous design, again necessitating a larger volume within the protection of the hull. Third, the mass effect field prohibits the utilization of space expansion charms, removing a key space-saving measure of earlier warvessel designs.

While the Belligerence-class has an internal flight deck for the ten Boeing C-70 Hercules II orbital dropships, the craft are deployed via portkey, maintaining the integrity of the upper and lower hulls.
