Monday 7:26am
The sunlight beamed through the slits of the blinds the blonde women was regretting not shutting the curtains the night before. What time was it, she questioned reaching for her phone, the bright screen read 7:26am. Crap she thought she was going to be late she forgot to set her alarm the night before. Emma rushed out of bed and took a quick shower throwing her wet hair into a ponytail, grabbed the outfit she had laid out on the chair the night before and got dressed. On a normal day Emma wouldn't have planed an outfit the but today was different. Today was the day the company she worked for was going being introduced to the new boss.
Emma worked at a small start up company that was recently bought out by a corporation. Her company created an app and website that helped connect children in the foster care system with their siblings, it allowed kids to report problems in the homes they were staying in, receive counseling, and connect with friends they made in different homes. Along with the app the company hosted meet ups and worked side by side with the foster care agency to get more kids adopted and the support they needed. It was Emma's dream job, after growing up in the foster system it was her dream to help as many children as she could.
At 7:45am Emma was running out of the door dressed in her black pants a white button up shirt and signature red leather jacket. She grabbed her brown leather work bag that was sitting by the door and raced towards her yellow beetle. Even if she had the money, which she didn't, she wouldn't replace this car, it held to many memories.
Fifteen minutes later Emma was pulling in her parking space of the parking structure and running into the building, making her way to the elevator. As the doors to the elevator opened to the fifth floor she looked at her phone reading 8:03, Emma was now three minutes late, noticing the rest of her coworkers sitting and standing around the main work area eyes directed at a women in a tight pencil skirt addressing the entire room. She hoped she would be able to slip in the back without anyone noticing she was late.
"Excuse me." Emma heard sneaking in behind her friend Ruby. How did the women in front speaking see her come in she thought, she wasn't even looking at her.
"Shit," Emma mumbled under hear breath. This was not how she wanted today to start.
Monday: 7:30am
A new company a new start Regina thought as she entered the Storybrooke building complex, the town was small but showed promise. She was sent by the company she worked for, Minor and Mills located in Boston to help establish the newly bought app and organization Foster Find.
Moving city to city was nothing knew, she was used to never settling down, but three weeks ago when she got the call for her next destination the brunette was shocked where the designation was, a small town in Maine. Most of the businesses her company bought weren't this small and were in bigger cities, not places that were so rural.
Her black high heels clicked against the marble flooring as she made her way to the elevator, remembering to hit the button for floor five. She wore a black skirt that fell right below her knees, on top she was a dark purple silk button up top and a black blazer. It was the outfit she wore for the first day every time she started at a company, it was a good luck charm.
As she waited for the doors to the elevator to opened she checked her reflection in the mirrored doors, her hair sat in perfect formation above her shoulders, not a hair out of place and her red lipstick painted her plump lips. The doors opened and the raven haired women stood up straight, as her mother always said 'people respect people who don't slouch'. The office was empty she was the first one to arrive, Regina enjoyed being the first one whenever she started at a new company, it gave her a minute to center herself and she was able to watch as each one of her new employees walked into the building and evaluate them.
After settling her things in her new office upstairs she noticed the office across from hers had paperwork every where, what a mess she thought. Regina stood by her office door looking down at everyone who walked into the main work area made coffee, turned on laptops, and put their belongings away. The whispers and glances in her direction didn't go unnoticed, she stood talk and avoided direct eye contact.
Each employee was aware their company was sold but by whom and who would be representing the company hadn't been announce. At 7:58 Regina walked down the stairs to the group below ready to introduce herself. The employees small talk became quieter with each step she took, when the last step on the stairs was reached the entire room stopped talking, the only sound that could be heard was the sound of her heals walking to the front of the room.
"Good Morning, everyone." Regina said in a firm professional voice, a voice she mastered years ago. A small dominant smile appeared on her lips. "My name is Regina Mills but you may address me as Ms. Mills. There will be a lot of changes happening in the next few months and the transition will be difficult, I expect each of you to do your best and bring 100% every day."
Regina had given this speech more times she could count she could give it in her sleep. She noticed a blonde women coming off the elevators in a red leather jacket trying to slip into the crowd of people listening to her speech.
"Excuses me," Regina said in a stern voice, noticing the blonde was attempting to hid behind a women with dark brown hair with read streaks. "You with the red jacket, what is your name?"
"Emma." Replied the blonde.
"Emma, what?" Regina asked folding her hands in front of her.
"Emma Swan." She said trying not to sound annoyed.
"Well Miss. Swan, tomorrow I expect you to be on time, the rest of your coworkers were able to make it in time for the meeting you should too." Regina spoke in a stern voice, held her gaze for a moment and then directed her attention back to the rest of the group.
"Nice going Emma, being late on the first day with the new boss." Ruby said in a whisper.
"I forgot to set my alarms." Emma set her bag down, both women focused on their new boss who continued her speech.
"As I was saying, the transition will not be easy but from the wonderful things I have heard about the company from Mr. Gold I don't think it will be a problem. As long as all of you work hard and are on time." Regina glanced in Emma's direction as she said the last part.
"To be on time you must be here by 7:55am every morning. If I can make it in on time so can you." Ruby glanced at Emma with an annoyed look mouthing the words, what the hell.
"I am the representative for Minor and Mills, the company that bought yours, Later today each department head will have a one on one meeting with me. If you have any questions report your concerns to your department head and they will bring them to me. I don't have time to answer fifty plus employees questions individually. This will save time and at the end of the day time is money. That is all for the time being, I will send out an email shortly with meeting times. Have a good day." Regina waked away from the group and back up the stairs no one made a noise until her office door was shut.
"What was that?" Emma asked, dumbfounded by what she had just heard. "What was her name?"
"Regina Mills but we can only call her Ms. Mills," Ruby said in a sarcastic tone. Emma grabbed her bag and the two friends walked over to the small break room to make some coffee. "She represents the biggest media and networking companies in the world. She really called you out for being late."
"I know, it was three minutes, I didn't think it was that big of deal. Oh well, we shall see how this goes." Emma grabbed two mugs off the shelf, handing one to Ruby. "I just hope none of us loose our jobs from this transition."
"I still can't believe Mr. Gold sold the company."
"I'm sorry about that." Emma sighed filling both mugs with coffee.
"No one blames you for what happen, you know that right?" Ruby asked placing a hand on her friends shoulder trying to comfort her.
"I know, I just wish there was something I could have done to stop the sale. If only I didn't..."
Ruby interrupted the blonde mid speech. "Stop that, we all support you and we know why you did what you did, so from now on you will stop blaming yourself or second guessing your decisions. Stay strong and march yourself up to your office."
Emma thanked her friend for the encouraging words took her bag in one hand, her coffee mug in the other and walked up the stairs. She opened and closed the doors to her upstairs office noticing Regina Mills watching her ever move. Both of their office had windows on the side that over looked the workers below and windows in the front that looked right each others offices. If their blinds weren't drawn they were able to look straight in and notice every move that each other made.
She gave a small smile towards Regina before she made her way to her desk and got settled for the day. Her smile grew as she looked at the small picture frame on the desk. A smile filled with memories of happier times. Emma worked throughout the day as hard as she could trying not to focus on the different department heads going in and out of the office across from hers. Her mind was filled with disastrous thoughts of her place within the company.
At 12:40 Emma stood up from her desk gathering her things to head out for lunch, she heard a ping on her computer. It must be a new email she thought. As she opened the email Emma instantly regretted looking at it. The email was from Regina Mills, her new overlord.
Miss. Swan, Please come to my office as soon as you read this email. We have much to discuss about the employees, the departments
and the company as a whole. Sincerely, Ms. Mills.
Emma threw her head back and sighed her stomach growled, she didn't have time for breakfast as she ran out the door this morning all she had to eat today was a granola bar that was in the bottom of her drawer. She went over to her office window and saw Ruby waving at her signaling she was ready for lunch. The two friends ate lunch together almost every day. Emma waved her on mouthing the words meeting and pointing at the office across from her, she signaled her friend to on without her. Ruby gave a thumbs up and left the office.
With each step she took towards the office across from her the knot in Emma's stomach grew, with a clenched fist she knocked on the door twice, a firm 'come in' followed. She opened the door seeing the brunette behind her desk her posture immaculate busy typing away on her computer. "Welcome Miss. Swan, it's great to see you arriving so promptly, please have a seat." Emma rolled her eyes at the snide remark and sat down in the brown leather chair across from Regina.
A few dreadful seconds later Regina looked up from her laptop placed her hands in front of her and looked straight into the most gorgeous green eyes she had ever seen. Green eyes that she knew she could get lost in, Regina pushed the thought aside composed herself and spoke "Thank you for coming in, I was surprised to see that you had the office, across from mine, I was under the impression that the previous owner and creators of the company were the ones who held the offices upstairs. They after all were the ones who sold the company and left."
Emma sighed still haunted by her decision. "Yes, about that. I was co-founder of the company but do not hold any more shares so when it was sold I did not benefit from its profits. I am still the department head of public relations and I was first in command during the transition period."
"I see, can you tell me why you didn't hold any stake in the company if you are a co-founder?" Regina asked curiously, it wasn't like her to ask such questions to the people she was in charge of but the blonde intrigued her. Her mother always taught her not to make things personal when it came to people she worked with or those that were under her. She had a reputation to uphold, personal details and relations got in the way. Regina had learn the hard way the last time she was in charge of a company merger.
The memories of her past mistake filled her brain she brushed them aside focusing on the blonde that slouched in the char before her. "I would rather not say, it's personal."
"Of course Miss. Sawn, we will stick to professional topics, I apologize for asking such an intrusive question." Regina voice went back to it's professional tone. "As you know you will be the primary point of contact with Minor and Mills when I leave, lets go over everything I have learned so far and what I discussed with the department heads. We will be working close together until everything has settled down so I suspect a lot of late nights and meetings, let's begin."
Emma focused as much as she could that each word Regina spoke, her mind was elsewhere it was focused on a hospital bed across town.
