A/N- Another short one, but I'll update soonish again, I hope. I love fluff, but it was getting too fluffy so I had to create some drama. Hope you enjoy and please please please review. I'm not bribing or anything, but I truly do get more motivated by reviews and am more likely to work on the stories that get more reviews, because they tell me that people are reading and enjoying it. Let me know what you think!
"About what, my darling?"
"Do you want to get married?"
"Emma Swan, if this is your idea of a romantic proposal, think again!" Regina responded harshly.
"No…no, that's totally not where I'm going. I…I just mean that we talked about it before, and we talked about how, you know, we're doing this all backwards, kid, sex, pregnancy, dating, relationship…I just wanted to make sure you're happy. I feel like…I don't know Regina, I feel like you deserve more than what I'm giving you. And I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a fuck up by not marrying you first. I mean…sure I don't really want to be pregnant in our wedding pictures, but I would do it, if it's what you wanted."
Regina smiled and chuckled lightly at her girlfriend's cuteness. "Darling, I'm perfectly happy. You're giving me everything, I couldn't ask for more than that, I wouldn't ask for more than that. You're giving me another child after already giving me one, and I never thought I'd be a mother again. You give me someone to love with my entire self, by giving me you. I don't need a piece of paper telling me that we're married for me to know that we're together forever. Our hearts are literally bound. That's more than I would have asked for. Don't be silly."
Emma started crying at Regina's words. Her emotions were out of control and it irritated her to no end. She let her girlfriend pull her close and laid her head on her tan collarbone.
"Regina, I can't give you what you deserve," she said through sobs. "I…I can't hardly even help with my share of the bills and food, I can't give you anything for Henry and I have, like, fifteen past due doctors bills for check-ups."
"Emma, why didn't you tell me about the doctors bills?" Regina asked, pulling away slightly to look into sea-green eyes.
"I didn't want you to pity me."
"Emma…this is my baby, too. I am just as responsible for those bills as you are."
"But you already pay everything else!"
"Emma, it's not your fault. I have an unfair advantage. The curse was designed so that I had everything I would ever want, and that included funds that you wouldn't believe. I don't need the money, but we have it, and I didn't have to spend any of my income for the past almost 30 years. Don't worry about money, dear. It isn't an issue. It's as much yours and Henry's as it is mine, do you understand me?" Regina lifted Emma's chin with the crook of her index finger. Emma nodded slowly, still sniffling and Regina held her while they fell asleep.
The next morning they met the Charmings and Henry for breakfast at the diner. Emma wasn't feeling up to it, but as she had been avoiding public, aside from her short and limited shifts at the station, she felt she owed it to her family to get out. The five were sitting at a table in the middle of the diner, because the booths were too tight for Emma to sit comfortably, when Ruby came up to take their order. After everyone else ordered, Ruby stared at Emma waiting for her to order, but the blonde was preoccupied.
"Emma," Regina addressed her girlfriend, who still wasn't saying anything. "Emma!" Regina repeated loudly and gently pinched the blonde's hand.
"Huh?" Emma asked, her eyes distant. She looked at Ruby who was staring at her expectantly. "Oh, uh, sorry. I'll just have some apple juice."
"Nothing to eat?"
"Um…I'm not hungry?"
"Bring her some bacon and scrambled eggs, Ruby, please," Regina interjected. Regina needed a minute to herself, so she faked a look at her phone and acted as though she had to take a call, walking outside with her cellphone. She breathed in the air and closed her eyes concentrating on Emma. She wondered what was going on with the other woman and why it wasn't being communicated. She heard someone clearing her throat behind her and she turned around to see Snow.
"Regina," Snow stated.
"Snow."
"What's going on with Emma?"
"I…I don't know."
"Well, has something happened? Are things different at home? Is she still having morning sickness?"
"No, no. Nothing's changed. I mean…her appetite has, she hardly eats. Most days I have to force her to eat her food, yet her baby belly isn't lacking. I don't understand. She looks almost full-term, but she has almost her entire third trimester to go through. We have an appointment Wednesday for the baby, but I can't figure out why she's lost her appetite."
"Do you think…uh…do you think maybe she's nervous? Emma sometimes wouldn't eat when she gets nervous because her gut would get all twisty, or that's how she described it to me, and it would make her throw up."
"I'm not sure. I suppose she could be nervous about how fast everything is going with our lives. I…I don't think either of us would have planned a baby this quickly in our relationship, no matter how well we're growing together. Snow…I…I'm trying, but I don't know how to take care of her."
"You can't She won't let you, she won't let anyone. She's too stubborn and independent. You just have to hope that she takes care of herself."
"I can't do that!"
"Regina, she…she looks sick. She's too pale, and she's too distant. Was she like that…um…yesterday, when you guys were alone? Or is it just around other people?"
"She was like it a little bit before we went to bed, but not most of the night. What do you think is wrong with her?"
"I'm not sure. Just, keep an eye on her, as I'm sure you already are, and I'll have David do the same at work Monday, and I'll come visit Tuesday while you work and keep her company, make her eat and everything."
Regina nodded and the women offered each other small smiles before walking back into the diner. Emma barely picked at her food, but did drink all of her juice. The rest of the day was the same. Emma was withdrawn and quiet, and it was scaring Regina. Emma had been getting progressively worse over the previous week or so, but this was downright a different personality than she had ever seen in the blonde. She wasn't the spitfire Henry brought home from Boston. She wasn't the woman with the huge appetite that rivaled her father's. She wasn't the sexually hungry partner that Regina had grown used to. This wasn't the woman she knew, but she didn't know what was wrong and Emma wouldn't talk about it.
The rest of the weekend and Monday and Tuesday passed with difficulty. When Regina arrived home from work on Tuesday, Snow pulled her outside before leaving and expressed her and David's concerns.
"Regina, I…I don't know what's going on, but something is eating away at Emma. She's…there's nothing about her that's the same. I know you know that, but even David said at work she just sits there and stares at her paperwork, not filling it out, not playing trashcan basketball or darts. He said she does nothing. She barely spoke to me today and hardly ate or drank anything."
"I'm going to bring it up to Dr. Whale tomorrow at her appointment. I just…I wish I could help her. I don't want this to hurt her."
"The baby? You don't want the baby to hurt her?"
"Yeah. I mean…I want this baby, I do, so badly, but Emma's more important. I need Emma." Snow nodded and they said their goodbyes.
When Regina dragged Emma out of the house for her appointment the next morning, the blonde hadn't even bothered to comb her hair. Regina had pulled her into the shower, cleaned her up and washed her hair, dried her off and helped her dress. She was practically catatonic. The brunette saw the worry wash over the doctor's face when he saw the lifeless look in sea-green eyes as Emma sat on the gynecological bed. He measured her belly, checked her cervix and felt for the baby inside and out. None of his routine elicited a reaction from Emma and he began to worry even more. He pulled in an ultrasound machine, rubbing the wand over the cool gel on her stomach. Regina looked at the baby and listened to his heartbeat, smiling, hoping that seeing their baby would make Emma have some type of reaction, but she didn't.
"I'll be right back, Emma," Dr. Whale stated, nodding his head to motion for Regina to follow him. She rubbed Emma's arm and placed a kiss on her forehead before leaving the room. When they were in the hall and the door was closed, he spoke. "How long as she been like this?"
"Honestly? I can't really pinpoint it. Her mood started getting worse maybe two weeks ago? Her appetite started going away about a week ago. Her desire…less than a week, but she's been in this state since Saturday."
"Has anything changed?"
"We talked about things, but nothing I think that would have caused this."
"Alright, well is seems like she's having severe depression, it seems to be pretty altering to her personality, which can happen. The baby hasn't grown much since your last appointment. By now the baby should be between 13 and 15 inches, but he's 11, maybe 11 and a half. He was 10 inches at her 24-week check up, that isn't enough growth in 4 weeks. Regina…we need to keep her here."
"What? No, it'll make her worse! I can take care of her! I can do this. I'll…I'll resign…I'll stay home with her. Please, she won't like staying here. I promise, I'll take care of her!" Regina was sobbing. "Don't make me leave her here."
"Regina, we can either keep her here, or we can do a c-section and take him out. He will not survive if she isn't put on feeding tubes. You cannot take her home. I'm sorry." She wailed and flung herself into his arms, her sobs wracking her body. "Do you want me to call her parents and have them come be with you?" She nodded against him and he called a nurse over and gave the nurse instructions to call David and Snow before he wrapped his arms around Regina and held her, comforting the woman he had caused so much pain, vowing that he would not let her lose another love because of his inability to save a life.
A/N- Don't hate me!
