Breakfast At Tiffany's

Chapter 8

"Hey! Erwin! I'm back!"

Anya had stepped out earlier that afternoon to have lunch with her father and brother, whom was in town for the weekend. After having been gone a majority of the day, she entered through the man's front door, dropping his house key into the glass bowel in the doorway once she stepped out of her shoes. Considering the man had planned for them to spend yet another evening together, not that she minded all that much anymore, Anya was all but convinced he hadn't returned from the store yet when he didn't greet her at the door or reply to her calls right away.

"I know you."

Anya stopped abruptly as she spotted a man sitting in the living room, alone, with a tea cup gracefully in his grasp. His voice was even as his narrow, hazy eyes stared back at her. "You're the little slut that's been sleeping with Erwin. Well, don't you feel special?"

There was a smug air about him as he glanced around Erwin's sitting room. He looked oddly familiar…

"Who are you?" Anya asked.

"No, a better question is who are you?" The man harshly bit back.

"I'm Anya, I work with Erwin. And I assure you, I am not sleeping with Mr. Smith. He is just my boss." Anya didn't feel the need to disclose her relationship with a stranger, not that it was any of his business in the first place.

"Wrong," He tsked, seeing through her lie. "Let me give you an example since you seem to not comprehend what I am saying. I'm Levi, Erwin's boyfriend. Now, who are you?"

His words knocked Anya to her knees.

"Anya?"

She grew still at the calling of her name, refusing to turn around.

"I-I'm Anya… Erwin's coworker…" Anya choked out a dry laugh before politely dismissing herself. "I apologize for intruding; I was just returning his key. If you'll excuse me…" Her heart felt as if it was going to explode right in her chest as she turned and took her leave.

"Anya, wait…!"

"Goodbye…" The woman said, politely excusing herself.

"Anya! Wait! Talk to me." Erwin said as he followed behind her, having little to no troubles keeping up with her with his long strides.

"Talk? Alright, let's talk. When we're you going to tell me you were gay?" Anya demanded, tuning to face him. There was no hurt in her face, just bitterness and anger contorted amongst her features. She felt stupid, humiliated. She allowed someone else to get close to her, when she knew better.

She let him in.

"Anya, I'm not gay." Said the man.

"You're not? That man said he was your boyfriend! What does dating another guy make you then?"

"I lost my wife and daughter some years ago and Levi… well he was there to help me through it all. One thing led to another…and then he got this huge job offer in New York…"

"And now he's back looking to pick up where you two left off, only you failed to mention that you had a supposed girlfriend."

Erwin's brows furrowed as he watched her back turn onto him. "Anya, we weren't sleeping together." He said in protest, following her to her car. "I care about you, I do."

"Erwin… just… leave me alone." Anya murmured, fighting the urge to cry. She had sworn to herself that she would never allow herself to cry over another man, and it was a vow she was determined to keep. She was stronger than that. If she could take beatings and a few days in the hospital, she could take this. This is why she distanced herself, for the specific reason to never get hurt again.

"Dumb bastard…" Levi tsked as his eyes cut back to the tea cup settled neatly on his lap. "You should've told her about your past."

"And that's coming from you?" Erwin asked, treading lightly on the already rocky waters.

"Look, I came here looking for answers. Can you imagine how I felt when I grabbed a magazine and saw you on the cover? Now imagine that same reaction when I noticed her at your side. I left the airport and came straight here, even the key still worked hence why I am here in the first place. Even some of her things are here…"

Erwin rubbed the back of his neck with a sigh. "I was going to tell you… but you had no right to confront her like that, Levi."

"And you have no right to tell me what I should and shouldn't do, Erwin." The idea of him standing up for some woman he barely knew was sickening. "She's your employee."

"I'm well aware."

"I'm sure there are rules against fraternizing in the workplace. You should try looking into those."

"What all did you tell her?" Erwin questioned.

"And that's what you're worried about?" That seemed to make Levi even more angry. "But since you're so concerned, I told her I was your boyfriend. Now I'm realizing I should've told that brat she has my used toy." He was well aware that his harsh words had little to no effect on the other man.

Erwin gave a defeated sigh as he sank down onto his sofa.

"When will you realize that no one is going to care for you as much as I do?"

"I know that, but…"

"But nothing. You're mine, Erwin Smith… remember that."
