A/N: Another sad chapter. Chapter 8…

Chapter 8: The moment when I needed you the most

Losing my pet rabbit Mr. Pickles as a young child wasn't as nearly as tragic as this! In fact, it was by far the last possible worst thing to ever happen in my life.

I couldn't believe the news that just came out. My grandmother Renee, the one who loved me dearly, the woman who played with me and my dollies, the one woman helped me with my summer homework when I visited her, the woman who helped me through everything when my other family weren't there, the woman who loved me unconditionally just vanished out of our lives? She just died.

"Renee…she…she left us two hours ago, it killed her." My father whispered in pain. I knew how much he viewed Renee like his second mother more than a mother-in-law.

"Phil just wanted to inform us that she died in her sleep." Jasper said softly. I shook my head.

"Renesmee" I heard my paternal grandmother mutter. At that moment I was just balling in tears. I felt myself being in the arms of my best friend Erica. I couldn't believe any of this. This isn't happening!

My Grandmother Renee has been a woman who was full of life and love. She was one of the only people who could cheer me up in my time of pain. She was one the only people who got me for what I am.

Ten years ago, when I graduated from middle school, she came to Washington for a visit. I was so excited to see her again since she lived incredibly far away in Jacksonville Florida with her husband Phil.

She and my grandfather Charlie got married in 1986 and two years later they conceived my mother. She originally had a twin brother but tragically it died after birth. Charlie was so distraught about the situation since he had always wanted a son that for the past eight years of my mother's life, they fought about what was the real reason for the death of their son and who was responsible. Finally they got a divorce and only then Charlie realized he made a mistake because he still loved her but there was nothing he could have done because he lost the two most important in his life.

My mom came back to live with my Grandfather nine years later because she missed him a lot and that was when she met my father at school and that was when I came into the picture. And Renee got remarried a second time.

Now going back to where I was. It was my middle school graduation day and I was ecstatic to see my grandmother again since I haven't seen her for almost a year. She looked different when I saw her again, she was thinner and aged a lot and looked kind of sick physically. I didn't know why until she told us she had Breast Cancer.

My entire family especially my mother and I were scared to death because we had no idea about the outcome to all of this. Will we lose her? Will she only have months to live? But luckily she pulled through for ten years of chemo therapy. We all knew we'd lose her to it one day but we never expected it to be now.

"She's not dead! She's not dead!" I screamed in complete denial.

"Renesmee…" My grandfather Carlisle whispered quietly.

"No! Don't try to convince me differently! She isn't dead, this is just a joke." I cried out, now looking up at my family, my family that just sat still. "Why are you just sitting there? Why aren't you calling the doctors to do something about it?" I questioned. None of them answered. "Ugh! I'll do it myself." I groaned and got up to snatch the phone from my father and dialing the Jacksonville hospital. I felt my father's hand on my shoulder.

"Renesmee, the doctors tried everything in their power but the cancer cells expanded all the way to the lungs and the heart. There was nothing anyone could have done." He whispered, with tears welling up in his eyes. I glared at him with my eyes also flooding waterfalls.

"I don't believe you. I can donate one of my organs or something I mean, we are compatible right? I can-" I ranted, not wanting to believe the obvious truth.

"She's dead Renesmee." He said once again. This of course caused another excruciating cry from my mother. I moved my gaze slowly away from my dad and onto the phone in my hands. My grandmother is dead.

"I took the first airplane ticket here as soon as I heard the call to come home!" I heard the familiar voice of my brother Edwin echo into the room. I titled my head to see him breathing heavily by the door.

"What happened?" He asked seeing all the down faces.

"Renee passed away a few hours ago." My grandfather repeated. This caused Ed to fall onto his knees knowing that none of this was a joke, that it was all real. Renee always used to say.

'Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form'. I never got what she meant by that until now. I knew she was in a better place right now. I guess by now I should know enough about loss to realize that you never really stop missing someone but you just learn to live around the huge gaping hole of their absence.

We then heard the buzz of my grandfather's cell. He looked at it and read the message and gave a slight nod. He looked up and said.

"Phil just wished to inform us that the funeral will be in the next five days." He said. We all nodded at him.

About twenty minutes of just pure and utter silence in the kitchen. Everyone decided to do their own thing to release their absolute pain. My parents decided to head home early so my mom could rest. My uncles just watched football but it was a little different this time because they weren't cheering and being happy in this saddening state whilst my aunts prepared dinner.

"Are you okay?" My brother asked. I nodded slightly as I stared up at the stars in the sky as we sat on the back porch.

"Remember how we'd always run around grandmas back yard every night when the stars were out?" I asked him after the long silence where the only noises were the crickets cricketing and the owls howling.

"Yeah, and we'd always chase each other around the yard with me in just my underwear." He muttered. I giggled weakly.

"And then we'd always watch the thousands of fireflies roaming around the air and hoping we'd catch one of them."

"And when I finally caught one, you became all jealous and scowled me for not putting holes on the lid!" He replied nudging my arm. I gave him a small eye roll.

"You were four you knew nothing." I whispered. He sniggered. "And every night we'd lie on the grass and watch the stars in the sky…" I said with a pause.

"While grandma reads us stories about the lion and the lamb," He murmured. I gave him a small simper.

"I'm really going to miss her." I said.

"Me too Renabel, me too," He replied as he pulled me by the shoulders and into his arms. It was so great to have my brother again…

... …

"I made you some coffee?" My best friend Erica said as she came into the room from being in the kitchen. I gave her a weak smile. "You know everything's going to be alright Re-re?" She said as she handed me the cup of coffee. I thanked her.

"I really hope so." I replied. "It's still overwhelming for me." I muttered with a sigh. "I mean, why do all of the worst things happen to me? I have to live in fear because of the past and I have watch all the people I love die right in front of me. Why is it me?"

"You're wrong Ness, because it's not you. Life doesn't always work out the way we hoped it would be. I mean remember what happened at the homecoming dance?" She said. I chuckled.

"You fell right beside the snack table and punch spilled all over your dress." I giggled.

"And that was a rental!" She groaned. I sniggered. "I'm just saying that, I've learnt that tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart." She said. I gave her a small smile.

"Was that Shakespeare?" I questioned.

"I have no idea!" She exclaimed. I laughed lowly. "But I'm just saying that you are that pure heart, these things aren't purposely done to you. You're just another individual who has a purpose in life…it's just some other's lives don't last that long." She smiled. I nodded.

"You're right." I answered. Erica had always had a way of making a point of things, she had always had a way to make me see the light and cheer me up. She was a true definition of a sister.

"Thank you so much." I said pulling her into a hug.

"For what?" she asked.

"For being the most amazing best friend." I whispered against her shoulder. I could literally feel her getting emotional.

"I think the real word you're looking for is sister." She replied. I nodded.

She was the most amazing sister

Erica and I talked more for a while and it was kind of good that I was at least smiling a little. I mean these kinds of situations don't just become forgotten overnight.

A knock on the door disturbed our conversation about our times in high school as we looked at our schools yearbook photos.

"Who's that?" I asked. Erica just shrugged.

"You should probably go get it." She said with a smile. I got off my bed and walked all the way past the living room and kitchen and to the door. When I opened it, I saw Jacob standing.

"Oh Renesmee!" he exclaimed and pulled me into a comforting hug. "I heard what happened from Erica."

"I'm okay." I whispered. He just shook his head as if he didn't believe me. "No. I am." I assured him. He just sighed deeply as we pulled away. "Why are you still in your uniform?" I asked.

"I came here straight from work as soon as Erica texted me. When did this happen?"

"About a few hours ago," I replied.

"God Renesmee I have no idea what to say…"

"You don't have to say anything, I mean it was her time anyway right?" I chuckled, and gave him a smile. He gave me a sad look. "I'm fine Jake. I don't really want to talk about it anyway. But I'll be fine." I said giving him a reassuring smile but I think we both know how much pain I was actually going through inside.

"Where's Rosie?" He asked. Thank god he changed the subject.

"She's in her room sleeping." I told him. He nodded. Rosie doesn't know what happened with her Great-Grandmother but I could tell she wanted to know what was up when she saw my said face.

Jacob and I took a seat at one of the couches in the living room.

"How is your family keeping up with all of this?" He asked.

"Well they're still a little shocked but we're going to try and get through it, my brother came over as soon as he heard the news."

"Your brother Edwin right?" he asked. I nodded. "Well I hope things get better at the end." He said. I hoped so too. "So when's the funeral?" He asked.

"Um…on Saturday, in Jacksonville Florida." I told him. He nodded.

"I'll be there." He stated. My eyes bulged. "That's if you want me too."

"Of course I'd want you to come with but that's too much to ask from you-" I cried out. That was too crazy to ask! Even though I wanted him so badly to come with

"Hey, I want to. I'll do anything and everything in my power to be there with you, by your side." He promised. I stared into his beautiful brown eyes and gave him a smile. I leaned in to give him a kiss on the lips. Jacob was the best.

… …

Today was the memorial service/funeral for my Grandmother Renee. After about a two hour flight to Jacksonville yesterday we all knew what was coming next and today was that day we got watch my grandmother lay in a coffin and watch her descend into the ground of the burial site so that she could rest in peace wherever she'll be headed to.

I couldn't help but feel the pain she must have gone through for the past ten years and wanting to take it all away. She would've been alive right now and healthy if it weren't for this stupid illness known as cancer!

But I knew I had to agree that life doesn't always come easily and life doesn't always go as planned. We were never born perfect in this imperfect world and I knew that we were all going to perish one day but there's this feeling of anger you get inside if you watch a family member vanish out of your life. I was feeling that now.

And I'm quite sure Renee would've wanted us to not mourn for her but to celebrate her life. So I was determined to feel a little jubilant or at least contented.

The ceremony was about to begin and I haven't seen or heard from Jacob yet. He will be here right? I'm sure he will…

"We are all gathered here today to say goodbye to a wonderful woman who had been known as a heroin to others. Renee Dwyer has always been a person who had a smile on her face and was a happy person which was contagious to everyone around her. She leaves behind her daughter and her two grandchildren. Her legacy will forever live in our hearts." The pastor announced as we watched her descend to the ground. I was standing by my parents' side with Rosie in my arms. Poor girl was crying heavily as she watched her grandmother leave the world. She hardly knew her much but she did know she meant a lot to me and my mom.

I couldn't help but check at my watch and look behind me to find out if Jacob had arrived yet. It's been two hours and he hadn't gotten here. I couldn't help but let the floods of fear rush through my brain. Could he have been late? Or maybe his flight got delayed? Or maybe he crashed-

I couldn't afford to think like that now and I had to make sure he was on his way here. But he sure was late.

When the ceremony ended, and we were all in the reception where my family was currently being offered their outmost condolences by everyone who attended the ceremonial service.

Two hours! Two hours I had been waiting and waiting for Jacob to return my calls and texts! I'm getting absolutely worried now.

"Hey Renabel, what's up? You look your expecting someone to pop up at any minute?"

"That's because I am Eddy!" I snarled at my brother. He nodded understandingly. "I'm sorry, I'm just a little stressed out."

"We all are Ren, everything will be okay." He assured me. I nodded. I felt my phone vibrate and I quickly checked the message but to my disappointment, I just got another condolence message from my boss. I sighed.

"Want a drink?" Eddy offered me. I smiled and took the apple juice.

"Look at this handsome feller over here, Edwin!" I heard my best friend exclaim as she came over. Edwin blushed. As a pre-teenager, Eddy had always had a small crush on Erica.

"Yeah, you really do look handsome brother."

"I do clean up good don't I?" He said and made a small twirl. We giggled.

"You remind me a lot of dad."

"Yeah I think I get that a lot lately." He said with an eye roll. Both Erica and I chuckled. That was when I heard my phone ring and I looked to see Jacob's Caller ID.

"I'm sorry I have to take this." I told them and walked to the nearby tree and answered the call. "Hi."

"Hey Ness, look I'm terribly sorry-" He began but I stopped him.

"It's okay." I stammered.

"I know I didn't come and that's because I had to go to this thing for work that lasted way longer than I hoped and I lost the flight, I'm sorry I didn't make it and I hope we can put everything behind us." He said.

"Sure we can put everything behind us." I said casually. "While I was standing here waiting here like a fool for you and watching my grandmother leave the world, you were out saving the world!" I shouted.

"Renesmee I'm sorry-"

"You know what Jake! I don't want to hear it!" I shouted. "Why should I stand here and listen to you justify yourself when you weren't even there the moment when I needed you the most."

"Renesmee-"

"Bye Jake," I dismissed and before he could answer I just hung up the phone. Tears started streaming down my face. Jacob promised me that he would be here for me, but I guess he breaks his promises and he isn't a human who has the decency to tell me he's going to hurt me. He could have at least warned me! I couldn't believe this!

My thought process was pulled away when I felt this weird feeling inside of me. I felt like I was being watched. I looked forward to see a figure standing by the farther end where most of the tombstones stood staring at me with a sly grin. I cock my eyes to see that that figure was…was…Riley

"Hey Renesmee, we're all heading to the dinner table right now." Erica informed me. I turned around to face her. "Are you okay?" She asked as she saw my face.

"Yeah," I murmured. I glanced back behind me to see that Riley just disappeared. It must have been my imagination. That was weird.

… …

Jacob's (POV)

Life is officially shit! This isn't totally happening. I just broke the heart of the girl I loved. Ugh! Why does this have to happen to me? I should have really thought of being a cop from the beginning. Renesmee hates me and may possibly hate me for the rest of her life. I promised her that I'd be there for her at the funeral. I even remember the words slipping out of my mouth!

"I'll be there."

Well look where I am now? In my office, on my office chair sulking like I have no meaning in life. This isn't what I expected to be my Saturday.

It all started when I got a call from one of the cops. Chris. Stupid Christ gave me a call warning me about a suicidal attempt.

Flashback

I was preparing for my trip to Jacksonville today. I had my ticket and my suit in a bag. I just walked out of my house and I was just about to enter my car when I got the call from 'Chris'.

"Hey Jake, are you busy?" He asked.

"Why?" I questioned as I lay my keys onto the hood of the car.

"We need to talk! A very serious talk in Federal Way," He exclaimed. I sighed.

"Can we talk about it later, I have a very special meeting to attend to." I replied as I threw my back into the trunk.

"No I think it calls for immediate discussion." He replied. I groaned in annoyance.

"Okay what is this about?" I asked in lack of interest because I was quite irritated by the time I was wasting.

"Think of a man on the roof about to fall off a 50ft building." He said. My eyes bulged.

"Is he crazy?!" I asked.

"Apparently so, and what's worse is he's killing everyone else in the building because he set a time bomb." He answered. I didn't have time to answer and I just got into my car and turned the siren on/

"We've got a 184 emergency of a man committing suicide. I repeat a 184! On Federal Way!" I said through microphone in the car. "Calling all SWAT teams," I exclaimed and drove all the way to Federal Way

It turns out the man was actually going to commit suicide and that the SWAT teams made it to him way before he could make the fall. And the bomb specialist came just in time.

Well that's the reason why I couldn't make it to Jacksonville because not only that but it took forever to make sure everything was sorted with the bear killings and all since the Sheriff assigned me to. I had to have everything to the 'big bosses' by tomorrow or I'd be conducted in a case of impingement.

The way Renesmee pulled me off really affected me hard that I even punched the wall and broke my hand at how stupid I was.

"I'm such an idiot!" I scowled myself as I banged my head on the desk. Embry sighed.

"She might forgive you?" He shrugged.

"Oh no, she made it very clear that she wasn't prepared to forgive me at all." I replied.

"Has she at least spoken to you?"

"She won't talk to me at all!"

"Look Jake, it'll be fine. She'll get over it. All you need to do is waltz over to her apartment, make the best apology speech ever, give the wolfie look and she'll be kissing you again and begging you to never break her heart again."

"That may work with you Embry but this girl is different from any other girls around. She has been hurt way more than just being lied to."

"Then she might just get over it and move on." He said. I sighed. I don't think forgiveness just happens overnight. "Okay, maybe just go over there and take her on a date or something." Embry suggested.

"You've never dealt with a woman with a broken heart have you?" I asked.

"Well I have you know! I've never had a serious girlfriend before so I wouldn't know what to do…" He began ranting away but all I heard was just blah, blah, blah, blah…

Wait a minute! I had the most perfect idea!

… …

I was standing right in front of Erica's apartment. Renesmee hadn't returned my calls or my texts the whole today. All I wanted to do was reach out to her and apologize for my mistake and I knew one way to get to Renesmee and it was through her best friend Erica.

"Oh it's you." She said with lack of interest as she stood in front of me with her arms crossed and her eyes narrowing at me. To be honest, I was shit scared of Erica and Jacob Black is scared of nothing!

"Look, I know Ness is sort of pissed at me," I said and she just scoffed. "But I'm determined to change that." I said. She stared at me with interest lingering in her eyes.

"I'm listening…" She said slowly.

"Get her to the state park and tell her to wear something pretty."

"Why would she dress nice for you?" She seethed. Okay I guess I needed that.

"Because I'm the ugliest person and she's the only person who could build my self-esteem." I replied. She rolled her eyes but gave me a slight smile. "Please get her to the park at 20:00 pm."

"What's in it for me?" She asked.

"A date with Embry," I replied. Her cheeks flushed into a deep red.

"Fine," She replied. Well I guess I can tick Plan A off the list…

… …

I was currently standing in front of the closed park with my hands in my pockets feeling quite nervous. Why was I nervous? Well for starters, your girlfriend might just kick your balls when she sees you. Oh right…

"Erica, I can't believe you dragged me out of the apartment in my pajamas so that I could take you to the local bathroom. Why didn't you just pee in mine?" I heard Renesmee's voice. Okay this is it.

"Because I wouldn't want to contaminate the beautiful aroma of your casa," Erica replied.

"So you couldn't pee in your apartment because it stinks like a dead rat and you couldn't pee in any other person's apartment in the building! And you couldn't go to the local restrooms because you're afraid that a vampire is going to attack you?" Renesmee asked.

"Um…uh…Hey there's Jake!" Erica exclaimed as she pointed to me. Renesmee's eyes widened and she turned around trying to walk away.

"I can't be here." She said.

"Renesmee wait!" I exclaimed. She stopped. "I can explain."

"Okay I guess I'll take that as my queue," Erica dismissed but Renesmee stopped her.

"Hold it!"

"Look Renesmee. I'm terribly sorry for what I did, I know I promised I'd be there for you and-"

"Jake shut up." Erica stated and then faced Renesmee. "It wasn't Jacob's fault at all Renesmee. He couldn't make it because a man almost committed suicide on the top of a building and created a nuclear bomb inside it, I think that it was quite courageous of him to do that for one, and I knew he would be there for you in a heartbeat if he could've but he couldn't and him being here to apologize to you with a hand full of lilies and for never taking no as an answer is one of the most romantic things a guy would ever do. He wouldn't have done this if he didn't care. So I suggest you pucker up and go give your man a hug." Erica said or more like demanded Renesmee. Well she took the words straight out of my mouth for sure.

Renesmee looked at Erica then me then back at Erica before nodding.

"Okay now can I go?" Erica asked. Renesmee chuckled and nodded. "Bring her back by midnight." She warned me. I smiled.

"Thanks Er." I said.

When she left, Renesmee and I were faced with each other once again. She walked slowly towards me with a disappointed look on her face.

"I'm so sorry Renesmee-" I began but was cut off when Renesmee cupped my face and pulled me down into a kiss.

"I'm sorry Jake." She said sweetly as we pulled away. I smiled widely. "I know I shouldn't have shouted at you the other day, I just had a lot on my mind and with you not being there I just couldn't cope."

"I know Renesmee and I promise you nothing and I mean nothing will get in the way of us anymore, not again." I said. She smiled at me. "I have a surprise for you."

"Jake you know I hate surprises." She muttered.

"Yes I know but think of it as an apology present." I said. She frowned at me. I then took the key out of my pocket and inserted it into the lock that opened the entire park. "The mayor gave me the key to the park for saving his daughter's cat once so I thought you'd experience being in the park after hours." I said and opened the door to the wide park. It was dark.

"Jake?" Renesmee stuttered.

"Tell what you think of this?" I said as I switched the lights on. Trees covered in neon lights, different colors and the water fountains flowing, and green lanterns floating up in the air.

"Jacob this is amazing!" Renesmee said as she stared at the surroundings. I smiled and took her by the hand.

"One more left." I told her. I walked her over to where I planned the big surprise. I told her she had close her eyes all the way and when we reached our destination I said. "Open your eyes,"

"Jacob no!" she shouted as she saw the dinner table setting.

"I'm not such a great cook so I thought we could settle for lasagna." I said and her eyes widened in delight.

"I hate you," I flashed a grin for her.

"No you don't!" I said moving the chair so she could take a seat and I took mine. "You love me."

"Hate you." She repeated. My grin fell and my face turned serious.

"You love me." I said. She nodded slowly staring into my eyes. I moved across the table and leaned in to give her a strong kiss.

I loved Renesmee so much. I know it might have seemed way too early but love can't tell time and tonight was our night.

A/N: How did you like that? Yeah I know too lovey-dovey Lol but I promise you drama will be around the corner in the next chapter. Please review!
