Chapter 5- Feelings of Betrayal

Last time...

"T-Tails? Uh oh..." Sonic whimpered, frantically dashing around the room, looking for a place to hide. However, the lab was so barren and empty from the hedgehog's victory 3 hours prior...that he couldn't escape his cruel fate.

"Well, we're boned." Eggman said as he started to sweat, while Sonic was standing there, unsure of what to do.

"SONIC, DON'T WORRY! I'M-" Tails stopped in his tracks as he saw Sonic there with Eggman, working to place Knuckles on the wall. "Sonic...What are you doing?!"

"Tails, I...I..." But Sonic couldn't finish. He was at a loss for words. He had put the last nail in his coffin. Tails had found out what was going on. All was lost.

"Sonic...how could you?"

And now, to continue...

"Tails, I swear...it's not what it looks like." Sonic said, attempting to reply to the traumatized kitsune, but it all came out extremely worried and raspy, sounding almost nothing like the hero we once knew.

"THEN WHAT'S ALL THIS?!" Tails yelled. "You've got Knuckles unconscious on the wall, Eggman frozen in his tracks, and an enormous cannon aimed at Knuckles! How is it not what it looks like?!"

"Well, you see..." Sonic was at a loss for words. He couldn't lie any longer. It was time for him to unveil the truth...

"Tails, he's right. Before you come to assumptions, Sonic was just about to save Knuckles from my clutches. So, you see, he's not evil at all." ...or not. At the last minute, Eggman lied to Tails about Sonic. However... Tails caught onto his lies almost immediately.

"I don't believe that crap for one second, Eggman! I know what's happening, and it's all EXACTLY what it looks like! Sonic's working for you now, isn't he?!"

"Well..."

"ANSWER ME RIGHT NOW, EGGMAN!"

Eggman was sweating bullets. He knew if he didn't tell the truth, Tails would catch onto his obvious fibs once again. However, if he told the truth...Mobius as they knew it may never be the same again...He then made his decision. "OKAY! Yes, he's on my side now. I was capable of persuading him to join my empire, and now he's with me! IS THAT A GOOD ENOUGH ANSWER FOR YOU, TAILS?!" Eggman replied. His face turned red, and he felt like a volcano, bursting nearly everything inside of him out at once. He felt like he may pass out at any given moment if he didn't simmer down. He caught his breath...and Sonic and Tails were arguing yet again.

"Tails, this isn't what it looks like! I swear, Eggman's just...extremely stressed right now." Sonic said to his pal.

"Are you REALLY trying to make me believe this lie AGAIN?! I'm not an idiot! I know a betrayal when I see one, and THIS is the ultimate betrayal! It's so unreal...this CAN'T be happening!" Tails replied with a twisted fusion of anger and sorrow, catching Sonic a bit off-guard.

"Tails, please...calm down...this isn't like you."

"AND THIS ISN'T LIKE YOU EITHER!"

"Well, that's true, but in my defense..."

"WHAT'S in your defense, Sonic?! WHAT?!"

"I WAS STRESSED! Eggman had me pinned down, and helped me unveil my deepest secrets. I'm not the Sonic you once knew...I've changed."

Tails was baffled. There was no way that he would bring him back to the side of justice this time. No matter which way he sliced it...he was doomed. "W...why, Sonic? Y-You left an ENTIRE LIFE of accomplishments and satisfaction... and friendship, not to mention convenience...to join your once-mortal enemy in an evil plot?"

"Yes, Tails...that's exactly what's going on. It sounds more cruel and heartless when you say it, but... yes. I'm on Eggman's side until whenever my time comes."

"I...I can't believe you. You've ditched us all..."

"Yes...and I know it was a bad move...from your perspective, at least...but I feel more complete here. I'm sorry if I'm falling below your expectations, but this is how it must be."

"So that's how it is, huh? Very well then. I'm sorry...but this is goodbye." Tails then walked to the Tornado, with tears forming in his eyes. He activated the plane...and prepared to leave Sonic once and for all.

Eggman noticed Tails leaving, and thought to himself: 'This is my ONE chance. If I kill Tails here, then I may be able to pull off my plan after all!' Eggman cackled in his thoughts (Don't question it. I don't know how.), and snuck behind Sonic, taking control of the Destructicannon (Yes, that's its name...Ugh.).

"Sonic..." Tails said to the traitorous hedgehog, "Just to let you know, if you ever want to return to the side you knew and loved...I'll let you back in whenever."

"OH, he won't be back for a LONG time...HAHAHAHAHA!" Eggman cackled, and he shot a laser from the Destructicannon straight at Tails' plane, beginning what would soon evolve into more than a petty fight.

"OH, GOD!" Tails yelled. The orange laser of utmost destruction hurled towards his plane, and in the nick of time, Tails barrel-rolled out of the lair in the plane, causing the laser to hit the floor.

"HE'S NOT GETTING AWAY THAT EASILY! ACTIVATE LONG-RANGE MODE!" Eggman screamed, and he shot a barrage of lasers like a madman, twitching uncontrollably.

"What the hell, Eggman?!" Sonic yelled. "Why are you doing this?!"

"THIS FOX HAS CAUSED ENOUGH TROUBLE! DIE, TAILS, DIE! MWAHAHAAAAAA!" Eggman then fired even more lasers, this time homing, to make sure they would hit Tails.

"You're INSANE!" Sonic yelled.

"You didn't notice that already?!" Eggman yelled, his right glass on his glasses cracked down the middle.

"Oh no...I can't evade these things!" Tails whimpered, trying everything he could to avoid these lasers. However...it still got to him, hitting both the plane, and his back, dead-center.

"YES! GOT 'IM!" Eggman yelled in pure evil, and cackled insanely, frightening Sonic like never before.

"Tails...no..." Sonic whispered. He knew something to this degree would happen to his friend...but he never knew THIS would happen.

"The fox is DEAD! DEAD AS A DODO! DEAD AS A DOORNAIL! YES!" Eggman cackled.

"EGGMAN, SHUT UP!" Sonic yelled, causing Eggman to immediately stop laughing.

"...Sorry about that, Sonic."

" I can't believe you. It's one thing to recruit me, and leave all my friends devastated...but when you kill my closest friend...THAT'S low."

"That's true. I'm sorry for my childish tantrum, Sonic."

Sonic stood there, silently, and as he started to slowly cry...things, surprisingly enough, were looking better down below in Green Hill Zone.

Meanwhile, down in Green Hill Zone...

"Oh my god! TAILS, what happened?" A familiar voice was followed by a pink hedgehog running up to his side. As usual, it was Amy. "Tails? Helloooooooooo?" Amy felt Tails' heart...and a miracle occurred. Tails' heart was still beating. He WASN'T dead. "Okay, his heart's still beating. Thank god."

"Amy, what happened?" Shadow then walked by, and saw the unconscious Tails in her arms. "Oh...how did this happen?"

"I don't know, Shadow," Amy replied, "but the important thing is, he's alive."

"Well, that's a relief."

"Yes, but we're going to have to take care of him until he gets back on his feet...if he ever does, that is."

"W-we?..."

"Shadow, please...I know you don't usually accept things like this...but you're the only one I know can help."

"Why me? Why not Knuckles, or Silver for that matter?"

"Shadow...please, I beg you, and besides for Sonic, I don't usually beg! Please, please...help."

"...Okay, I'll do it. But only for Tails. Who knows what'd happen if Sonic found out this happened to his pal."

"Thanks, Shadow. I knew I could count on you." Amy said weakly.

"Now, then...let's get Tails back to his house." Shadow replied, and he and Amy picked up Tails, and started walking towards the house, unaware of what had become of Sonic.
