Chapter 2
When they awoke, their bodies protested and their heads throbbed. Each and everyone got back up to their feet to man the controls and were glad that the ship was on automatic. They had flown a normal course using auto-pilot.
"Check everything." Fury grumbled. "I want eyes and ears everywhere. See what the hell happened that we did not anticipate!"
"Everything is stable, Sir." Sitwell pointed out.
"Casualties?"
"None."
"Good, tell everyone to get back to doing their jobs. The last thing we need is a riot. Once we figure out what's going on, we tell the entire crew."
"Noted, Sir."
"And the Tesseract?" Fury turned to Erik.
"Everything stable, Sir." The speakers blared as an Agent confirmed it was shut off.
"Sir, there's something wrong." Hill pointed out. "The time we have on the Helicarrier is different from the time we have on Earth. And we're in New York, Sir."
"How the hell did we get over New York?" Fury wondered.
"The wormhole must have done it." Bruce voiced his opinion. "Are you sure we're still on our earth? A wormhole could mean that we traveled from a different world or something similar."
"Like star wars?" Tony asked.
"It could happen." Erik stated. "You have to check everything to confirm it's really ours. I can't explain it but a wormhole inside our planet's atmosphere is rare, and unheard of!"
"We are not in our world." Thor muttered.
Natasha and Clint heard it loud and clear, and ended up turning to each other for confirmation. They questioned each other with their gaze and left it. Maybe Thor would speak up sooner or later. The god seemed to be lost in thought and it was best they don't disturb or anger him.
Tony sat up on the chair, skimming through the reading while Banner and Erik did the same.
Steve just tried to get along with everyone.
The other Agents inside the room were doing all they could to help figure out what was going on. They searched through the difference after entering the portal or wormhole so they could get a specific theory down.
They hacked whatever they could and finally they made a break through.
"Director Fury." Agent Fires said. "We found something strange you might want to check."
"What's that?"
"We can confirm this is New York, but Sir—" The Agent hesitated.
"Spit it out."
"None of us exist here."
Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing and was silenced. The fear clawed at them and they weren't sure anymore. The thought of not existing was frightening. The avengers eyed each other one last time before a brave soul decided to end the silence.
"This isn't funny." Clint shouted. "How is that possible?"
"Clint—" Natasha warned.
"Come on Nat, I get the whole god, alien and shit, and we're spies for god sakes! But we have records on all of us that are hidden, not only that but the whole world knows who the hell Tony Stark is! And Thor! He's… him!"
"Thank you for pointing that out, Agent Obvious." Tony rolled his eyes.
"I'm being serious, Stark. This isn't to be taken lightly. No records, not even you."
"Clint is right." Natasha said. "Even the most secret of Agents have an identity."
"We found the Avengers." Agent Rick hesitated to say.
"Goddammit, Agents! Spit it out!" Fury glared. "This ain't your first day of training!"
"They're just characters from a comic book and movie, Sir."
"Wait…" Steve raised an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"
"It means, Cap." Fury turned to them. "We're not in our world anymore."
oOo
"You think you know pain?"
"Who?" Loki groaned.
The voice was barely audible.
"You will long for something as sweet, as pain."
The voiced echoed and laughed, there was darkness and Loki tried to grab something, only to feel something hit his chest.
He cursed silently, feeling himself jerked to the side as the light flooded his eyes.
He turned to his side, only to hear the metal shackles noise around his wrists.
"How in Valhalla did it come to this?" Loki asked himself.
Loki groaned as he woke up.
Finding no change to his room, he tried to sit back on his bed so he would feel less uncomfortable. It was hard and his knees almost gave out. He tried again, stubbornly this time to achieve it, but to no avail, he dropped down and sat there.
"Oh Loki." He told himself. "You've tried to conquer a realm and yet you cannot even reach the bed to sit. How shameful."
After his humiliating attempt, he'd rather not do it again.
He forgot about the camera in his room, and whatever happened with the Helicarrier and everyone on board, he felt the need to care.
It also affected him, and the fatigue continued to wash over his body.
"The trickster is so far away…"
Loki's limbs ached and his head pounded, listening to the distant voices.
Not good.
"You cannot hide forever."
Loki groaned, only to be muffled by the muzzle on his mouth as his hands shot to his head.
"He seeks you, you are so close."
No.
Loki shook his head, covering his hears in hopes that he would drown the voice away.
"I wonder why you are so close, we could almost grasp you!"
The voice continued and Loki felt so heavy.
"He'll find you."
Loki concentrated, closing his eyes and his breathing erratic. He managed to calm himself down before he caused a scene, something he didn't want anyone to know.
"He is in your thoughts."
"I can keep him out." Loki hissed back at the voice.
"He is inside your memories."
"Then I shall bury them with the others." Loki replied. "I will not be a toy any longer!"
"You are his!"
"SILENCE!" Loki shut his eyes tighter. "L-leave me be."
"Pet… a toy… a plaything Prince…" The Other's voice was sharp and echoing.
Loki knew that they would come after him now that he failed Thanos, and he knew he would be punished severely.
But he fought back.
He wasn't afraid of the Other, but the pain Thanos would cause him was something to fear.
He had been through the mind gem's power far too many times to command his own body control, and he would never willingly admit that he had been used and abused in that year he had been gone.
Though now was not the time to have an ego.
Loki wished Thor could see him, and if he was broken enough, he might beg to tell him.
Or at least try to.
"My lies are always above the truth." Loki sighed beneath the muzzle.
He rubbed at his eyes, something was out of place and Loki felt it radiating everywhere. The magic was faded and distant, but the overwhelming darkness was everywhere.
He tried to focus at the lack of magic, and there was none.
Loki stared and began to think.
"What is happening?"
In truth, Loki had no idea what was happening outside his room. All he knew was the metallic covers surrounding him were covering the knowledge and it was excruciating not being able to know.
Loki wished to be part of the knowledge of knowing.
Too bad he was their prisoner.
oOo
"How is it possible that we don't exist in this world?" Tony breathed, unable to comprehend it fully. "This isn't possible. Is it?"
"It is." Bruce spoke up. "There are numerous timelines, all of which is connecting. There is always a possible alternate world where we are just fictional to them, where as we are real to us."
"I'm still having a hard time understanding this." Steve shook his head.
"This is possible." Thor voiced out. "This has been understood by my people before, but never tampered with. There are such things as dimensional travels in which some of your mortals have theorized."
"Impressive." Tony thought.
"Can we get back to our world?" Natasha turned.
"It's possible for it to re-open again." Erik said. "But we have to search for a similar energy reading from before. Catching the fly back home would be dangerous. We won't know for sure where it will lead us."
"Can the tesseract be used to focus on it?" Fury wondered.
"Yeah like a door." Clint said.
"What is it with you and doors?" Tony teased while Clint ignored him.
"The tesseract isn't exactly up for another experiment." Erik muttered,
"We may need help for this." Thor regrettably answered.
Thor had little knowledge about the subject.
He was too busy trying to focus on his battles that he ignored the importance of studying to counter such events. Only one person came to mind, and though Thor was bitter about the idea of speaking to Loki, he was the only one in the Helicarrier besides himself to know the answer to their questions.
"Are you saying there's someone who knows about this stuff?" Hill crossed her arms. "If so, that's great news."
"You will not like who I am planning to suggest." Thor frowned.
"I think I have a clue." Natasha narrowed her eyes. "I'm not sure about this, Thor."
"I don't like this." Clint sighed, looking away.
"I don't know, Thor." Steve mumbled.
"Loki." Thor said with a slight bitterness in his voice.
"No way in hell." Tony blurted out. "He threw me out of a goddamn window."
"I don't trust him and do you really think he will help us?" Fury scoffed, looking into the idea.
"I am not saying that you put your trust on Loki after what happened." Thor sighed. "But if we come to a dire situation, perhaps he could offer us help. After all, he is also stuck in this world with us."
"Delaying the inevitable." Bruce muttered. "His trial."
"I doubt there will be a trial." Thor sighed.
"We'll see, Thor." Fury scowled. "But first, we need to focus on what's happening now. All the Agents not assigned to man the ship, I want every information you could find about all of us! And I want this ship INVISIBLE!"
"YouTube." Tony spoke up.
Everyone in the ship turned to him questioningly, while Tony merely shrugged and rolled his eyes, he pushed buttons on the table. The window began to dim, closing the view and making it dark for everyone. A few background lights appeared on the walkway, and the screens that were open by the control panels.
Tony shot one screen from the table to the main screen in the middle of the room for all to see.
"You said this isn't our world, and we're just a movie and a comic book character." He wiggled his finger. "If so, then some of the information we need is probably on a video site."
"He has a point." Natasha cocked her head.
"You're welcome." Tony grinned.
"Fine, let's dig up some information." Fury said. "What can you find about the Avengers?"
"Just a sec." Tony began to type. "Hey, why don't you guys start typing out what you want to see? You can help out too, Thor. Anything at all."
"Of course." Thor said, but didn't touch anything.
He was too busy thinking about what he might tell Loki if they gave him a chance to speak to him. Thor really wanted to believe that the little brother Thor knew was still in there, but it was too much to hope for and he didn't want to feel hurt again.
"We could leave it to them." Steve sighed. "I don't understand half of what's going on here."
Bruce had to admit, the more he spent with these people, the more accustomed he became to them. Even if they barely knew each other, they fought for their world and that wasn't something you can easily take away from their memory.
Man out of time, The Super Soldier.
A genius, the stubborn Iron Man, Tony Stark.
Assassins, the Shield Agents.
An Asgardian that is an alien from another realm.
"Here, let me." Bruce allowed himself some calmness, as he patiently helped Steve while Thor did away with the controls.
They didn't realize that Thor was accustomed to such technology.
"I have encountered them before." Thor scowled. "I see no reason why you would doubt my knowledge."
"Never took you for a brainer, dude." Tony smirked.
Thor ignored him, there was something familiar about Tony Stark and it was a good and bad feeling.
"I have a tingling sensation that I'm not going to like this." Clint shook his head, sliding his finger on the screen, searching and scowling at the information.
"There're a lot of things you don't like." Natasha rolled her eyes, doing the same.
"I know, that's one of the reasons why I don't like it."
"It's good to have you back, Clint."
"Good to be back, Nat." He gave her a glance, but she was busy doing her own work.
He shrugged it off, deep inside, he knew they were both struggling at the thought of being compromised and it wasn't easy to deal with crap. Clint knew all too well the destruction it can cause someone.
Especially if that is a partner.
You're a spy, not a soldier.
True, they were assassins at best, not someone who goes to war and saves the world. They were in it for the job, not really for the people.
But things have changed, haven't they?
I've been compromised.
In more ways than one, right?
They were curious what this world has in store for them. And it means their counterparts too. This only doubled the interest on the things they could play with.
oOo
Fury turned to Agent Hill and with a glance; she walked up to him by the closed window. She noticed the information needed to be kept, so she instinctively followed her boss. Hill wasn't happy with the Avengers, and she wasn't sure if she will in the future.
"Is there something you need to tell me, Sir?" She crossed her arms.
"If we're not in our world, we may have information on him." Fury muttered, distressed. "Is there some way of preventing them from finding it? You can tell the other Agents to hack into the system, and push them far away from the information as possible."
"I was way ahead of you, Sir." She frowned. "But this still isn't right."
"I know, but do you have anything?"
"There's a lot and it's good news."
"Good. Good." Fury sighed. "Is it all ups and not enough downs?"
"Doubt it." Hill looked at the Avengers. "We have no control on this world, even the way we hack into the system, we can't do."
"What do you mean?"
"Our influence here doesn't work." Hill sighed. "On our world, we have control of info gathered, but here, we have nothing. We're just like any other stalker on the internet. We can't access personal files unless we want to be traced by their government."
"Our technology is way past theirs."
"Even so Sir… there's something about this world that's not letting us get what we want. Like a force that wants us to look miserable."
"Then we're stuck at a dead end." Fury palmed his face.
"Let's just hope they don't search for him." Hill shook her head. "It's bad enough that everything about us is on the internet. Even Shield is an active site for on-lookers."
"They're bound to find more than one secret."
"This world already has our secrets out in the open."
"Like hell if they want to know more about Shield. I'm more concerned about what they find out." He grunted, talking about the Avengers. "What kind of explanation would you give to something like that?"
"It's only been a few days, Sir."
"I know, but what's being done is being done." Fury huffed. "There's no turning back."
"Being level 7 won't matter anymore, Sir." She said to him. "If they do find the courage to search about him, then we don't have a choice. The internet is free for all."
"No use getting worked up then."
Hill turned back while Fury walked away.
"Anything?" He asked.
Clint and Natasha raised their hands and Natasha shrugged, handing the stage over to Clint, who seemed to be taking things all too well. Everyone in the room was looking at him, listening closely to what he had to say.
"Nat and I found our counterparts." Clint explained. "We're all actors, who either starred or cameo in a movie."
"So it is true?" Thor raised his head.
"That we're not in our world? Probably." The archer shrugged. "Going back, Iron man is portrayed by Rob Devan, who seems like the exact replica of Tony Stark in both attitude and starkness, but he is married and has two kids and a wife."
"Okay, not the information I want." Tony stared.
"Next is the movie you have, Iron man 1, 2 and 3. Nat played in the second." Clint sighed. "Chick's name is Sharlotte."
"Sharlotte?" Steve muttered, earning a glare from Natasha.
"Moving on?" Bruce said. "What else does it say?"
"Thor's played by a guy named Chris Worth, has three kids, twins and a girl. Tom Hiddles for Loki. Cap is a guy named Evans and I made a cameo by a guy named Jeremiah. The Avengers movie with Dr. Banner is Russo, Sam as Fury, Hill is Cobie and Coulson by Clark."
"That's the important stuff you have?" Natasha leaned back on her chair.
"They're all actors." Erik sighed. "That's a lot to take in."
"Guess who is the most famous of us all." Clint frowned.
"Me?" Tony guessed.
"Not even close." Clint smirked. "You're like, second to the list on of the ladies."
"Who?" Tony and Steve both said.
Clint popped up a video in front of the main screen for everyone to see.
It was footage of Loki in San Diego and they all cringed at the sight of him grinning, while the audience laughed, smiled and they all looked like they were enjoying the time of their lives. He had a small microphone attached to his side near his lips and he was addressing the people.
"Loki?" Thor's eyes widened. "He is… are you sure?"
"Let's watch."
People were screaming his name, "Loki! Loki! Loki! Loki!" and he had to usher them into silence. And he speaks out. "I am Loki…" And they continue to scream. "Of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose."
"I cannot believe this." Thor laughed, leaning back. "Even Loki himself will be overwhelmingly confused at the reaction of these people."
"He said the same thing before." Erik mumbled. "Back when he first came to Earth."
"He did." Clint nodded. "Why the hell are they so happy?"
"Stand back you mewling quim!" He pointed at the man, who followed and walked away.
"Who is that?" Fury asked.
"A director or producer of the film?" Natasha wondered.
"This bright lieu of freedom diminishes your life's great joy for a mad scramble in this chamber, in this meager palace of Midgard. The arena they call hall H." Loki grinned. "Where are your Avengers now?"
Everyone screamed happily.
And the video was cut.
"Say my name." He ushered and they screamed, "LOOKI!" "Say my name." he continued. "LOKI!" "SAY MY NAME!" So they shouted louder "LOOOKII!" And the last time, "SAY. MY. NAME!" They screamed "LOOOKII!" the loudest and he smiled at them, completely content.
"Where's the rest of it?" Tony wondered.
"I'm not watching all of that." Clint mumbled. "I think we get the idea that they love him."
"I cannot believe this." Thor chuckled. "This world is— they love his chaos?"
"Or his charms." Natasha shrugged. "Either way, they think your brother is a misunderstood villain."
"There's more." Clint said. "There's an Iron man 3 here. You're lucky Stark, you have three movies."
"Jealous?" Tony smirked. "And I searched them, you know? Oh mister cameo and brain washed for the entire movie, dude."
"Shut up."
"Getting back to topic." Steve said. "So Loki is one of the best villains here."
"Best villain." Hill laughed.
"This world is a joke." Fury threw his hands in the air.
"He has made a lot of appearances, and has a huge fan base." Natasha piped in. "But diving far from them, we have other videos here. A few from Stark's Iron Man 3, it happened after the Avengers. We have Thor the dark world..."
"The Dark world?" Thor eyed them. "You mentioned Svartalfheim."
"Is that another world of yours?" Bruce asked.
"It is home to the dark elves."
"We'll watch the videos later." Fury said.
"Is there anything useful we could find?" Steve asked. "Not to be rude, but we know they're actors and we have movies and looking into this will help shape our future but is there anything that would get us back home?"
"Gee Cap, why don't we just search how to get back to our world using a wormhole tag. That would be so much easier." Tony rolled his eyes and bit back a laugh. "Like that would help us."
"Why can't you drop the jokes?" Steve turned to him. "It's not even funny."
"It's funny to me." Tony said, slightly offended.
"What else is there?" Fury asked.
"I found a trailer about the Avengers." Tony leaned back, ignoring Steve.
"And that is relevant because?"
"It plays exactly what happened to us. And it could be useful; it might show us what we missed."
"Fine." Fury said, not content with the information they had.
"I mean no disrespect, but I am curious." Thor glared.
"What is it?" Fury turned, eye staring at him.
What was wrong with this place that was making it so uncomfortable for all of them?
"I want to know what Loki is doing in his cell." Thor demanded.
Fury scowled at Thor.
He knew not to argue with the god, for Thor was stronger than all of them, perhaps even the Hulk, so he turned to the two assassins lounging around the chair and gestured for them put on a footage of the room.
"Give us a live feed." He gestured.
"Thank you." Thor said.
"I'm not doing this to ease what you feel for him."
"I understand."
"No you don't. I'm just doing it so I know where he belongs."
"Make no mistake; I no longer share much of the affection of what I used to, for him." Thor glared. "He is my brother, but it looks as if the brother I once held dear has been ripped from me. I only wish to know his whereabouts."
"Now that you said that, let's look, shall we?"
"He's up." Clint said with no emotion in his voice.
"Here." Natasha pressed a button, flinging it to the big screen.
Loki was on the floor by the edge of the bed, arms trying to embrace himself. His eyes were empty and starting at the wall, they rewound the tape and it seems Loki had awoken the same time they did and had been experiencing some issues they couldn't explain.
"Do you have any idea what he's thinking?" Fury asked Thor. "It might help."
"I have close to none." Thor sighed.
oOo
Back in the cell, Loki continued to stare at the wall tiredly. He wanted to sleep again, but he knew sleeping would only make it worse. For some strange reason, the Other's control of him was stronger in this place.
It was far from the protection of the nine realms, and close to the void where Loki had once traveled to and it was horrible.
Loki could feel the burning on his chest, the dizziness on his head and the churning of his stomach. The pain wouldn't leave him and in that moment, he just wanted to die.
He wanted someone to kill him.
Anyone.
