Chapter 23
Loki felt a chill and buried himself on Thor, still continuing to use his brother as his bed and abandoned the pillow that was once in between them. Thor had no complains, because when he thought about it, this had been the closest that he and Loki had been since they were children. Loki longed for his brother's love and acceptance, while Thor wasted no time giving it to him.
"I feel this next one won't be so pleasant." Loki mumbled sleepily.
"I fear that you are correct."
They flew over Svartalfheim, while Jane slept and Thor adjusted the covers for her. Loki wearily held the control of the small ship, looking with jealousy at the two.
His eyes say it all as he continued to eye the two. Their ship hovered over hundreds of sharp rocks, passing through them as the dark yellow and grey skies illuminated their background. Loki chose this exact moment to voice out his opinion to his brother while the mortal was still asleep.
"What I could do with the power that flows through those veins."
"Wait, is Loki still influenced in this?" Bruce asked to pause the movie. "I'm a bit confused."
"Perhaps partially?" Thor wondered, poking Loki's cheeks. "Loki? Wake up."
So warm.
Loki buried his face deeper, trying to ignore the sound of Thor's friends questioning whether he was alright. Loki didn't care about what they think or whether he was being too close to Thor more than a brother should.
I don't want to wake up.
He will not be deprived of his brother's love and affection.
It's so warm.
No matter how ridiculous he may sound.
So comfortable, brother.
Loki hadn't realized that he had dozed off for a short moment, maybe he truly was tired and he was denying it so much that he had gotten it into his head that he was alright. Maybe the exertion he did earlier on in the cafeteria had something to do with it.
He groggily opened his eyes. "Hmmm?"
"Loki?"
"I am awake..." Loki yawned again. "And I know not. The attack from the green beast left me shocked to disrupt the influence, but yes I still believe there are some traces left, but not enough to fully convince me of anything. Perhaps, the idea of kingship and power is still there or otherwise, I am pretending."
"So whichever it is, you know not?" Thor wondered.
"I know not." Loki closed his eyes, falling back to sleep.
"So, what do you guys think?" Tony crossed his arms.
"Well, I believe it is merely Loki's hate that fuels him to act this way." Thor concluded. "Perhaps it is him being inconsolable, if he merely feels lonely or hurt."
"Possibly." Loki groaned.
"Let's turn back to the movie, shall we?" Natasha snatched the device and hovered her finger above the pad. "We're almost near the end and we could always watch it instead of guessing."
"Press away." Clint said. "I'm getting kinda hungry."
"Dinner later." She pressed play. "Movie first."
Loki allowed himself to look at the screen, despite his sleepiness, he tired to see what his future was up against. Listening was one thing, watching was another.
"It would... consume you."
"She's holding up alright." He distracted him with his words. "For now."
"Your concern bothers me." Tony half joked. "It's like you just hate her guts for the fun of it and want to see her dead. It doesn't sound like concern."
"I am not concerned, merely questioning." Loki tiredly retorted as he watched movie Thor's expression turn sour.
"She's strong in ways you'd never even know." Thor replied.
"Say goodbye."
"Not this day."
Loki stood up.
"This day, the next, a hundred years, it's nothing!" Loki mocked, anger in his expression. "It's a heart beat. You'll never be ready. The only woman who love you prized will be snatched from you."
"And will that satisfy you?" Thor glared.
"Satisfaction's not in my nature."
"Surrender's not in mine."
The Avengers and the two brothers allowed future Loki's words to sink in.
What he said was true, because they outlive the humans by thousands of years. They may not be immortal, but they live longer and are stronger than mere humans. Steve could probably live a few more years thanks to the serum, and Tony with his arc reactor, but everyone else, they weren't so sure anymore. Clint and Natasha were just as bit as normal as every other human being on the planet, and they weren't even sure about the Hulk that was inside Bruce.
"I'm tired."
"Then close your eyes, Loki." Thor muttered.
"You know that is not what I meant."
"And you know I meant what I said. Close your eyes, sleep if you must, but if you could, then listen, because I will not let you leave my sight."
"If you insist."
Loki closed his eyes, not wishing to watch any further. He listened but he did not look, fearing what he may see will be stuck inside his head. And Loki did not want that to happen.
Thor sighed, and started whispering to Loki in their own language again, knowing that their exchange is far too fragile.
"Your words are painful." Thor stroked his brother's hair.
"But my future words are true." Loki mumbled on his neck. "And even now, those are my thoughts and will be something I would have eventually spoken to you about."
"Aye." He sighed. "But it makes it no less painful."
"Endure what I have, and you will know what real pain is, brother. Consider yourself lucky that it is I who told you of this. Odin spoke to you of how life of the mortals are fleeting, while I tell you that loving a mortal is hard and aching."
"I know." Thor frowned, hugging Loki tighter.
"No, you do not." Loki's breathed heavily, feeling sleep overwhelm him. "I am teaching you that getting too attached will break you. That is something you must learn."
"The son of Odin." Loki took a step back.
"No, not just to Odin." Thor shouted and stood up.
"Oh no." Clint cursed.
"This is-" Steve shook his head. "I'm finding it harder and harder to say anything about it."
"You think you alone had loved mother." Thor painfully said. "You had her tricks, but I had her trust!"
"Trust!?" Loki shouted back. "Was that her last expression!? Trust! When you let her die!"
"What hope were you in your cell!?"
"Who put me there?" Loki looked ready to cry, feeling anger course through him. "WHO PUT ME THERE!?"
Nobody could even talk anymore or voice out their opinions, because it wasn't right to do so anymore. Earlier was all fun and games and was funny as hell, but now came to the serious parts. And there were no words to describe how they were all feeling. They feel for Loki, but they couldn't blame Thor for not knowing.
Because they were all in the dark.
"It's alright." Thor placed his chin on Loki's head. "Think not of my words there, but my words now. I will not allow this to happen to us."
"So you keep saying." Loki breathed.
Thor felt guilty upon saying those words, he could feel Loki's grip on his sleeve clench tighter as Loki buried himself even more on Thor's chest. His brother did not want to listen, he did not want to continue, but because of Thor, he allowed himself to be brave enough to watch it.
"But I know the truth, brother." Loki thought. "No matter how different you say you feel, there is that darkness in your heart that wishes me gone."
Thor had grabbed Loki and slammed him to the side. "You know damn well! You know damn well who!" He stopped his brother there, ready to punch him, but stopped himself from doing so.
"She wouldn't want us to fight."
"Well, she wouldn't exactly be shocked." Loki smiled, his tears filling his eyes.
"I wish I could trust you."
Thor broke away, and turned his back to Loki.
Loki had peeked through to see that part, and regretted the decision. He buried himself again on Thor's chest and just allowed the silence to drown his thoughts. He could faintly hear Thor cooing him with such beautiful and kind words, but opted to ignore them.
"Allow me to bemoan, brother." He thought.
Tony looked at the ceiling, because he wasn't about to cry. He wasn't, because hell this was a little emotional. Natasha held herself together while Clint and Steve did the same. Bruce felt a lot of sympathy for Loki, because he was a victim as much as he was the cause.
Loki scowled even further, and up-righted himself as he watched Thor hide his own tears. Loki took the courage to say it first rather than have something ruined.
"Trust my rage."
And the scene changed from Darcy and Ian, trying to get Erik out of the mental institution.
The Avengers didn't really pay attention to it.
It wasn't that useful.
Loki remained quiet in his brother's arms while the Avengers discussed what just happened with Thor and Loki. Loki could faintly hear the Avengers talk to Thor, and felt Thor's rumbling chest as he spoke.
"Are you sure that he's alright?" Steve asked in concern. "I mean, if he really needs to sleep, you should go. He's been through a lot today."
"We've been through a lot today." Clint said. "I can't blame him."
"It will be over soon." Thor muttered. "Besides, I do not wish to move my brother. He is rather comfortable here."
"Is he even awake?" Natasha questioned. "He's not answering any of our jabs."
"Perhaps he wishes not to." Thor continued to stroke Loki's hair, moving down to thumb his neck, allowing Loki to moan at the warmth through his drowsy sleep. "He is comfortable, I do not wish to bother him."
"And his hand?" Bruce walked forward and checked it. "May I?"
"Loki?" Thor asked.
"What the hell was that?!" Darcy screamed. "And why are you smiling!?"
"There's nothing more reassuring than realizing that the world is crazier than you are." Erik said as he walked ahead and threw the medicines into the garbage bin nearby.
"Take me to Jane's lab!"
"I don't care, brother." Loki scowled when he felt Thor tug his hair. "Stop disrupting my sleep."
"You may check him." Thor confirmed.
Bruce checked Loki's hand gently and took away the bandages. He carefully checked and noticed that it was fully healed. Thor saw it and nodded at Bruce, who took Loki's other hand and took off the bandages as well and threw them in the trash.
"It's late in the afternoon." Tony stretched. "Maybe we could get some early dinner and watch the next scenes?"
"I second that." Clint's stomach growled.
"Alright." Natasha stood up. "Steve, Stark and I will go get some food for all seven of us."
"I'll go with you." Bruce smiled. "I'd like to pick my own food."
"Well, that means I'm the hero for the day." Clint smirked, pausing the video. "I'll stay here with the two brothers. Nat, you already know what food I like."
"Alright, fine." Natasha huffed.
"Okay." Steve counted. "Natasha, Tony, Bruce and I will get some food in level 6 in the North wing common room. I think that's the place they rigged to be the cafeteria. While you three stay here, can you handle the Other if he shows up? Clint is-"
"Are you kidding me?" Clint pshawed, Steve. "Thor equivalents all of you. Except Hulk. And I can pack a punch even if I'm injured."
"No need to do anything drastic." His partner smirked.
"Is he cool?" Tony asked, pocketing his hands in his jeans, turning to Thor. "Does he need anything specific?"
"We will be fine." Thor held his brother in place. "He is half-asleep, but I will wake him up as soon as the food is here. My brother secretly likes sweets, so I suppose whatever drink you gave him first-"
"Done."
oOo
Tucker walked through the halls, supposedly headed to where Sitwell and Cordell was meeting up for a plan. His teammate Jack was ordered by the Clairvoyant to attack Loki, and well, his teammate was dead and he just didn't want to die early like Jack did.
"The Asshole had it coming." He thought.
He should have known better than to randomly attack with a gun and some grenades, but at least he died with a bang. Literally, the bang of a table headed straight for him and he died like a pork in a slaughter house. Yep, that's how Tucker would describe it.
Poor Jack.
"Oh well, the less suspicion," He mumbled. "The better."
"Come in, Tuck." Cordell said through the comms.
"Is this an open line?" He asked.
"No, secured just for us."
"Cool."
"Where are you?"
"East wing-"
"Sitwell's waiting in the North."
"Tell him to hold his horses." Tucker huffed. "The trackers with me, I'll rendezvous there, I just have something to do."
"The Avengers are headed to the North wing. They might not exactly go to where Sitwell is right now, but I'm pretty sure they're headed to the common room for some grub."
"Don't care, but this means that Loki's alone, right? Jack said something about him being a bit fragile, you know? He said so before he died. He was excited to see him too. I've never seen a guy look slightly feminine, but still have that lean muscles."
"Whatever, Tuck. You and your fantasies."
"I take what I get, man!" He laughed. "Besides, have you seen that curve of his?"
"Have you?"
"No, but maybe. Hell, I can share him if I get my hands on him."
"Fuck you."
"You don't swing both ways?"
"I'm straight, Asshole."
"Screw you too, Cordell."
While he walked through the halls, he just felt a breeze move past him. Tucker stopped and drew out his gun, pointing it at nothing.
The lights began to flicker.
"Who's there!?"
"The shadow is-"
Tucker turned, eyes fearful.
Something hit him from behind, almost as fast as a truck would hit a wandering man on the streets. He braced himself on the metal wall and began to choke silently for air. He was glad that most of the Agents were doing their jobs in their own stations that they didn't have to see him.
"Shit."
Tucker shook his head in pain and looked up at the ceiling.
Some unknown dark magic blackened his eyes, allowing the darkness to swallow him whole. His entire posture changed, stronger, better and he found himself craning his neck feeling the beautiful pain surging up through his spine. He could hear the Other whisper things in the back of his head but thought it was his own. He had to get the tesseract, that was his priority.
"Accept Lord Thanos."
Screw Hydra.
"Obey him."
Tucker found himself acting without thought, believing it to be his actions.
"Tell me who you are."
"Tucker." He muttered to himself. "Combat unit."
"What say you mortal?"
"What do you want me to do?" He said.
The Other just grinned.
"Do me a favor, and make Loki fear this world. Make him beg for mercy and realize that there is NO place that is safe, even amongst allies such as the humans. He will ALWAYS be in Danger!"
"I have an idea."
He went into one of the chemical labs and knocked the cameras down with a little rewiring for the video to loop. He knew that nobody was at the chem lab at this hour.
He was observant that way.
Tucker started rummaging through the syringes for a weapon he could use in case of certain emergencies.
"I like how your mind works, human."The Other whispered.
"The kid won't know what's up."
Tucker took the syringe labeled 'Project 48' with a code of Norse. Without so much as a second thought, he took five syringes of it and placed it in his shield jacket and found an interesting tranquilizer at the side and pocketed it.
"Tuck." Cordell was at the door.
"You scared the living shit out of me, Cord."
"Your tracker's on, you ass. What are you doing in the Chem Lab?" He asked. "Sitwell's waiting, and he thinks that Fury and Hill's on our tail. Best to head back and rendezvous another time."
"Does Sitwell know?"
"No. I bailed out on him first chance I got. He's treading on the dangerous here. We're not going to get caught because of him. What are you doing?"
"Just took some things."
"That's what's going to jeopardize the mission."
"I have a new mission." Tucker grinned, eyes dark and fearless. "Wanna help?"
"Depends."
"You're from the Strike team, you're smart and you know how the drill works. So what do you say?"
"Lord Thanos is pleased with your minds, humans. His voice reaches even in this world and contacts me. He grows so strong in the void." The Other stood before the two, allowing Thanos' dark magic to lull the two in his command. "Obey, and let it sink into your hearts and mind."
The Other disappeared, allowing the two to believe it's their plan and oh, how successful was the Other to be able to do it.
"If you can hear me Loki, do you see?" The Other thought. "You must never challenge me. For I am a force to be reckoned with."
"How can I help?" Cordell asked, his eyes dark.
"Project 48." Tucker smirked.
"What is it?"
"A weapon that some Hydra and Shield scientists convinced Fury to work on. Some of Loki's blood, or his essence and magic is in this. They reverse engineered it or whatever it's called in chemistry. They made it lethal for him."
"You want him dead?"
"No." Tuck shrugged. "Just sick It's supposed to mess with his mojo or completely erase it."
"You read the data?" Cordell saw the guy nod and took the notes off the table. "You sure it works? It says all the lab rats died."
"Maybe."
"Maybe?" He smirked. "It says so right here, that the effects could be lethal to him, a potential weapon for any magic users or rather species of Loki's kind."
"Screw the data." Tucker trashed it. "If the Other wants Loki, he can get him half dead. We're just in it for the fun, right?"
"Fine."
"The Other will take care of him once we're through."
"Sure thing."
"I will and I shall." The Other licked his lips in anticipation.
"What happens when we get him?" Cordell smirked. "I dunno if you have this all planned out."
"I think I do, I'm used to combat missions and plans." Tucker laughed. "We're taking Loki off the Helicarrier."
oOo
In the North wing, Sitwell was standing in the hall, pacing. He rubbed his head and delicately slammed it on the wall before him, groaning in annoyance. He felt impatient and fidgety all of a sudden, fearing what Fury might know if he ever decided to check. He was fearful because Fury hadn't said a word to him at all that concerned their departure.
"Where are they?" He mumbled.
All he was hearing was from the main room, and Fury wasn't talking to him anymore. Does he suspect his treason?
"What are you doing this late in the afternoon, Sitwell?" Hill crossed her arms, walking forward. "It's almost dinner time."
"Stretching my legs."
"In the halls?"
"I was headed to the cafeteria, but I realized they're all still in clean up duty." Sitwell chuckled. "Head hurts a bit, you know? Was supposed to head to the common room and get some coffee."
"There's nothing going on with the video feeds that Fury asked you to check?"
"Nothing." He shook his head.
"I'm headed to the common room, wanna come up with me?" Hill gave him a smirk. "I heard that some of the Avengers are up there getting some early meal."
"I don't know."
"Unless you're busy?"
"No, no, I'll go with you, Hill." He didn't have much of a choice but to go. "I am feeling parched."
"I do make a mean coffee." Hill smiled, allowing Sitwell to walk with her upstairs. "And Fury's almost done with the Hydra interrogation. Can you believe it, hydra Agents are all over the place?"
"Yeah."
Suddenly Sitwell heard his comms come to life as half his ear listened to what Hill was trying to tell him.
"Sitwell, this is Cordell, I found Tucker." He huffed. "We have a plan, you might want to just go along with it."
"Yeah." Tucker voiced. "We're in the security room and managed to take full control of it. Nobody will suspect a thing. We see you with Hill, so you just have to nod your head if you hear us."
Sitwell nodded.
"You okay?" Hill asked. "Fury's questioning your absence from the main room."
"It's just a headache. Some things are just a pain in the ass." He chuckled awkwardly you know. "But I'm sure whatever plan there is, I'm up for it."
"Good to know, Sir." Tucker chuckled. "We're getting Loki off base."
Sitwell almost choked.
"You sure everything's okay?" Hill raised an eyebrow. "You still up for that coffee, aren't you? You know how I make coffee."
"Yeah, I'll have coffee."
"We can't get near Loki right now." Cordell huffed on the line. "Thor and Hawkeye are over at Banner's lab with him. Taking him now would be suspicious."
"So," Sitwell tuned it the questions with Hill. "What happens after?"
"After dinner, I dunno." Hill muttered.
"We'll wait till lights out."
oOo
On Svartalfheim, they continued to fly the ship until Jane opened her eyes. The Aether took over her and she rose, looking ahead as if she was in a trance. Thor and Loki look at her with suspicion, as her eyes were dark and desire filled.
"Jane?" Thor worriedly asked.
"Malekith." She said, like a witch possessed with power.
Natasha, Steve, Bruce, and Tony returned with what looked like a five course meal from different restaurants. Clint and Tony had a burger, while Steve and Natasha had the same cooked meal with mash potatoes and vegetables while Bruce had a small portioned meal.
Tony didn't know what's up with that, but he kept saying that Bruce was on a diet.
Thor was given the biggest portion of Pork, Beef and chicken, while Loki shared his food in bite sizes.
Loki was given hot chocolate and was fully awake by now, while the rest had smoothies and Bruce, of course, had a cup of tea.
Thor and Loki were on the floor, pretending to have a picnic while Tony wantonly sat on the other side and began to nit-pick at their food, which Thor had no protest to. Loki on the other hand, hissed or slapped his hand away. Tony was offended, that after all the things he did for Loki, the younger god still rejected his friendship.
Which we all knew is false.
Because Loki was already half thinking of accepting it.
They landed their ship, and all three walked over to the edge of the hill to watch Malekith and his men walk forward in the distance. Thor took a deep breath and turned to Jane and Loki, but mostly to his mortal.
"Alright, are you ready?"
Jane nodded but Loki answered. "I am."
They rose from their hiding spot, and Malekith saw them immediately. The two of them stood there, while Jane stood at the background, looking as if she was still in a trance.
"You know this plan of yours is going to get us killed."
"Yeah, possibly."
"Oh no." Loki frowned, taking a sip of hot chocolate. "If I knew better, this plan will be awful. Especially since it came from you and you are agreeing that it could get us killed."
"I am deeply offended." Thor tasted his hot chocolate.
"That's mine." Loki snatched it back. "Get Tony to make you one."
"He called me Tony." Tony said in the background, pretending to giggle like a schoolgirl.
"Shut up." Loki glared.
"But hey, back to the topic." The Billionaire sighed. "What's with the whole bad thing that's with Thor plan? Don't you guys usually have this all figured out since you go to adventures as a kid."
"Not at the last minute." Loki smirked.
"Loki." Thor warned.
Loki and Thor exchanged looks, and as soon as Loki smiled, Thor frowned and reached out to him to pull him into a hug that Loki couldn't escape from, making Loki laugh as harder than he should be.
"Are we missing something from these two?" Clint drowned his smoothie and took a bite of his burger. "W-what's so funny?"
"I think it's an inside joke between them." Natasha neatly took some fries and dipped it in mash potato.
"Sure looks like it." Bruce mumbled.
"It is?" Steve gaped.
"Oh trust me, it is." Loki laughed as Thor tried to shut him up. "Stop! I won't tell them, brother. Your secret is safe with me. Unless you say it yourself."
"Shhh..." Thor embraced Loki, who continued to laugh.
"I think it's pretty cute." Tony secretly took a picture of them, hugging. "Have you seen Loki smile like that? At all?
All the Avengers shook their heads.
"I think this is what Loki was supposed to be like." Bruce smiled. "Since he's a kid in Asgard's standard, you know?"
"I like the idea of it." Clint smirked. "Send that pic to me, Stark. That's good blackmail material."
"No way." Tony stuck his tongue out.
"What do you mean this plan will be awful?" Steve asked again, because everyone else seemed to be forgetting the movie. "What's the plan?"
"I know not." Loki shrugged, leaning on Thor's side after all the fuss. "But I know it will be awful."
"You greatly offend me." Thor frowned, pretending to be hurt. "I am capable of making plans that are not awful, brother. Some of my plans worked well."
"To a degree." Loki smiled, while the Avengers questioned it. "Like that idea to hoard goats inside your chamb-" Thor covered Loki's lips with his hand as Loki snickered violently in his hold, unable to keep his laughter from going away.
"Ignore him." Thor lowered his hand as Loki snickered.
"So Avengers, Let us continue the movie shall we?" Loki smirked. "The goat is a tale for another time."
"A tale none of you will never know." Thor grunted and Loki laughed.
Loki held up his shackled hands and waited for Thor to uncuff him, but when Thor did not move, Loki just made a face at him while Thor remained passive.
"You still don't trust me, brother?"
"Would you?"
Thor gave him a look and proceeded to take off Loki's cuffs, and when the younger one stroked his wrist, free of the cuffs, he brought one hand behind him, and took out a dagger.
"No, I wouldn't."
He stabbed Thor and threw him off the hill.
"THOR!" Jane shouted. "NO!"
"Oh my." Loki said dryly. "I suppose I do hate you still."
"Is this the plan?" Steve gaped again.
"I know not."
"You stabbed me." Thor stared with widened eyes. "How could you stab me?"
"Oh, so now I am the one at fault here." Loki glared at him. "Do not be a sore loser, brother. I am sure we are even by now."
"I don't like where this is going." Natasha voiced out. "There's something fishy going on."
"You think it's the plan or Loki went into a hissy fit." Clint debated.
"Hissy fit?" Loki blinked at him.
"Look." Bruce pointed at the screen.
"You really think I cared about Frigga, about anybody!?" He kicked Thor on the face, sending him to his back and back to his stomach.
"This is not I who is talking." Loki voiced out. "I would never say that. She is my mother."
"You believe this is the plan?" Thor asked, rather worried.
"I don't know." Loki mumbled. "Do you?"
"I suppose it could be."
"All I ever wanted, was you and Odin... dead at my feet!"
Thor raised his hand to call Mjolnir, but Loki rushed and dragged the dagger down to his hand, cutting it off, making Thor scream in pain just the same time as the Avengers all voiced out their opinion in one go. Jane rushed to help him.
"You cut his hand off!" Tony said. "In one go."
"That was a clean cut." Clint whistled. "Damn, Thor!"
"Don't tell me we're going to fight with Thor, and he's Captain hook, because I swear I have so many jokes on that!"
"Stark." Natasha warned. "I'm sure there's a logical explanation for this."
"It must have taken quite a swing to take his whole hand off." Bruce stared sadly. "I'm sure the dagger is probably enchanted, because Thor's not bleeding."
"I suppose." Thor licked his lips. "What says you, brother?"
"I-" Loki tilted his head in confusion. "But I would never- I thought about it but-"
"You thought about it?" Thor watched as Loki shrugged.
"I did but-"
"Loki!" Thor whined.
"I said I thought about it, but I wouldn't actually do it."
Thor did not speak a word, he just waited for Loki to continue what he was saying but it seems the younger brother was lost for words. Loki's silver-tongue failed him at that moment as he questioned what was going on.
"If that is my future, yes I would hate you for everything you did until that point, but-" Loki swallowed. "Even such a thing as to cut off your hand would be too much- and to openly voice out such obvious lies- you know me better than this!"
"Aye, I do." Thor turned to him seriously.
"Everyone in favor of saying "This is their plan," Tony breathed. "Say I."
"This isn't a court, Tony." Steve snorted. "We'll get an opinion of it soon."
"It is fine, Loki." Thor whispered, showing him his hand. "Look, still intact. You will not do that to me, and I believe you." Loki just stared, feeling chaos spike inside of him.
Why does it feel as if something bad was going to happen?
Jane was grabbed from behind by Loki as she struggled from his grip. "Malekith! I am Loki, of Jotunheim! And I bring you a gift." He threw Jane at his feet and pointed the dagger at him.
"I ask only one thing in return, a good seat from which to watch Asgard burn."
"I don't care anymore!" Tony raised his voice. "If this is part of Loki's plan or Thor's plan, whatever- Loki had reasons to hate his brother and yet still, Thor didn't deserve that."
"You're biased." Bruce confirmed.
"Yeah, somewhat."
"No, it's a lie." Loki confirmed to all of them. "It is the plan. I know it is. I know myself and I know Thor, such a thing wouldn't take him down so easily. If he truly loves the mortal, he wouldn't allow me to do such a thing to her."
"You believe that?" Thor turned to him.
"Don't you?" Loki frowned. "You have such low confidence in yourself and I that you don't see it as I do. This is the lie."
Malekith turned Thor with his foot and lifted Jane in the air, extracting the Aether from her. Loki was anxious, his eyes darted to Jane with half his worry. Jane saw the future, she saw what the Aether showed her and when it was finished, Jane's body fell to the ground.
"Loki! NOW!" Thor shouted.
Loki used the diversion tactic and Thor's amputated hand returned with a flash of green as well as some of his injuries. Thor quickly summoned Mjolnir and shot the lightning at the Aether, attempting to destroy it.
"Well I'll be damned." Clint laughed.
"It was a lie after all." Natasha smirked.
"Thank God." Steve muttered. "I thought for a second that Thor would no longer have a hand and the world would have perished."
"Consider it lucky that Loki's actually helping Thor." Bruce sighed.
"Totally." Tony smirked.
"Even if I've done you so many wrongs," Thor muttered in Asgardian. "You have never ceased to prove your love is as strong as ever. And I am sorry for not trusting in that more."
"Do you really trust me?" Loki asked.
"I fear if I say it, I might-"
"Do you?"
"To a degree." Thor sighed. "But hear this, I love you and that will not change. Ever."
"That is good enough for me." Loki hummed.
The food was disregarded and finished, and they were now focused on the screen before them. Loki positioned himself back on Thor's chest and watched the movie. His back was to Thor, and his brother embraced him from behind.
Loki frowned, and played with the hem of his clothes, unable to bring out his voice. Thor saw this and pulled Loki's distracted hand away and held it in place.
So Warm.
Loki looked up to see Thor's blue eyes focused on the screen.
It failed as Malekith absorbed it and headed to leave the ship.
"He's getting away." Natasha cursed.
"GO AFTER HIM!" Clint shouted.
"We're all too invested in this movie." Bruce palmed his face. "It's not healthy."
"It's exciting." Tony shrugged. "But hell, I can't help it. GO AFTER HIM THOR! KICK HIS ASS!"
"He is." Steve pointed. "No need to shout."
Two Dark Elves attacked Thor, and Kurse had enough, he threw one of the grenades at Loki, and the younger god's eyes widened and he pushed Jane away.
"Shit!" Clint cursed, pulling at his hair! "OH GOD, you're gonna die!"
Loki bit his lips as he felt Thor's grip get tighter. Loki eyed the Avengers, who were so invested in the movie that they were feeling too overpowered by it. Loki reached out to hold Thor's hand and cradle it on his own, which Thor squeezed back for assurance.
"It is fine." Loki mumbled in their tongue. "It will be fine."
"I cannot see my future without you." Thor lowered his chin to Loki's shoulder.
"Nor I with you."
Loki was about to get sucked in, painfully, it was agonizingly slow but when the appearance of Thor's red cape came into view, it all seemed better. The Avengers took this time to be able to breathe properly, thankful that Thor managed to save Loki at the last minute, knowing that there was still something brotherly between them.
"I thought that was over for sure." Tony clutched his arc reactor. "Damn thing is gonna give me a heart attack."
"We don't want you dying soon, Stark." Natasha voiced.
"I don't think this is over." Steve said. "You know it's never that easy."
Thor looked at Loki and disregarded him, flying back to Kurse as Loki fought some of the Dark Elves. Thor was caught between a rock that Kurse hurled at him and when the creature proceeded to walk forward, Thor called for Mjolnir but was swatted away like a fly.
The Avengers were all wincing as Kurse and Thor fought, it wasn't looking out too well for Thor.
"Thor." Loki bit his lips.
"Whatever happens, this will not be our future."
"You say it as if it is that easy." Loki swallowed his grief. "Do not tell me you do not see failure in this, because I do."
"Loki-"
"You do not understand." He whispered. "I've been through failure before, and I know one when I see one."
Loki slashed his dagger back and forth and killed the Dark Elves and noticed that Thor was in distress, getting beaten like a pulp by the Kurse.
"Oh no." Thor cursed. "I know that look."
"He's going to help you." Natasha voiced out.
"With what exactly?" Steve wondered. "We haven't seen the extent of magic Loki has yet and he's not even using it in battle."
Thor just stared at his friends.
"This is going to end up with shit." Clint bit his lips. "Damn it, I don't know anymore-"
"You're going to take on something that big!?" Tony gaped. "Are you serious? If Thor can't fight that thing, what makes you think you could?"
Loki stayed silent, he could feel Thor's breathing was slightly labored behind him, so Loki did what he thought was best and squeezed his brother's hand tightly in his. Thor rested his head on Loki's right shoulder, comforting the two brothers.
This was it.
All or nothing.
Thor got punched in the face over and over again, the sound of it was excruciating and when Kurse stood up, a long piercing weapon went straight through his chest.
"HE DID IT!" Clint and Tony yelled.
"It's not over." Steve pointed out.
Kurse turned around to see Loki, looking slightly fearful.
"How is he not dead yet!?" Natasha cursed in Russian. "That thing pierced straight through his chest."
"Must be his anatomy." Bruce mumbled.
"I cannot." Thor embraced Loki further, but Loki was already deep in thought, watching the movie.
Kurse dragged Loki into the blade and it pierced right through him.
"NOOOOOOOOoo!" Thor screamed.
"Oh shit, no." Tony covered his mouth.
"I cannot-" Thor lowered his face to bury it on Loki's shoulder, while Loki couldn't stop staring at the screen, watching himself be impaled for his brother to see. Loki entangled his hand from Thor and placed it to touch his brother's head for comfort.
"Shh..." Loki hummed.
He could feel wet tears on his shoulder.
Loki stared at Kurse while it stared back and pushed him roughly away as Loki landed painfully on his back. A screeching noise in the background sounded as Kurse went closer.
"Do you hear that?" Bruce asked.
"What is that?" Steve wondered.
"The sound of revenge." Loki muttered.
"See you in Hel, monster." Loki croaked as he covered his wound over his stomach. The monster realized this and noticed that the grenade had been activated.
The Avengers gaped at the realization of this, that was brilliant of Loki to do but it was so self-sacrificing that they didn't know what to express. No matter how much Loki hated Thor, they still protected each other.
"How!?" Clint half shouted. "How- I didn't even see it!?"
"Damn." Natasha clenched her fists. "That was brilliant. Stupid, but brilliant."
Thor watched and bit his lips, unable to think of anything. How will he be able to see a future without his brother?
How?
Kurse was sucked into the vortex painfully, and although he screamed, his tongue was ripped from him and sucked into the vortex and it left with no traces. It was a clean destruction, enough for him to feel pain and die perfectly.
Thor stood up and rushed to Loki, who was having a hard time breathing, clutching at his wound.
"No. No. No. No." Thor lifted Loki up, his voice forced. "You fool, you didn't listen."
"I know, I'm a fool." Loki half breathed. "I'm a fool."
"Stay with me, okay?" Thor touched Loki's cheek and held him, his voice quivering as he spoke as Thor tried to be strong.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
"Shh... It's okay."
"I'm sorry."
Tony had to look away, and clench his fists while Bruce had to take his glasses off and look at the floor. Clint bit his lips while staying strong, while Natasha remained with a mask that was slowly breaking. And Steve, you could see the expression on his face was like the same expression when he had lost Bucky.
"Damn it." Clint cursed, wiping his tears furiously. "How emotional can you be?"
"You're dying." Thor concluded, saying it in their tongue. "You are going to leave me as well, right after mother."
"At least I did as a hero in your eyes." Loki smiled sadly, turning his body to face Thor and cup his brother's cheeks. "That is good enough for me, brother. Besides, death is kindness."
"It is not." Thor lowered Loki's wrists and hugged him tight.
"Stop mourning." Loki mumbled on his neck. "I am still here."
"It's alright."
Loki had stopped breathing harshly and stared at Thor, as if waiting for something. His pale skin was turning dark by the seconds that passed.
"I'll tell father what you did here today." Thor stared.
Loki shook his head gently. "I didn't do it for him." And after a few moments, Loki's eyes closed shut.
"NOOOooARHGH!" Thor painfully screamed, looking away as he wept for his brother.
"Damn it." Tony stood up and began to pace, stretching himself and turning away from the Avengers, refusing to show his manly tears. Tony stared at the ceiling, unable to keep himself from being emotional.
"Tony." Bruce called.
"I'm cool." Tony had his back to them, arms crossed. "It's cool."
Bruce pinched the bridge of his nose, staring down at the floor, watching in silence as movie Thor grieved for his brother. It was so painful and so heart wrenching, that he just felt angry. Clint wiped his own tears, not sure why he was crying. He should hate Loki, but found himself unable to. Everything he hated about Loki just disappeared like a puff of smoke.
"I need a drink after this." Clint joked, sniffing and wiped his tears.
"Same." Natasha lowered her gaze.
"I don't know what to say." Steve mumbled.
Thor buried his face on Loki's shoulder, embracing him as tightly as he could, while Loki hummed and whispered to Thor that it was alright, but Thor wouldn't let go of him. Loki closed his eyes and just allowed himself to stay there in his brother's grasp, not saying a word. He felt tired, and wanted the sleep to overwhelm him. Loki had been through too much, all in one day. He had to let the idea sink in first, because he knew if he didn't, it would break him like every other truth he knew.
"I need something to drink, Cap." Clint muttered. "The next scenes aren't that important anyway."
"Sure?" Steve stood up.
"I'll go with you." Natasha and him walked out of the door.
"Tony?" Bruce asked. "You sure you're okay?"
"Yeah." Tony retreated in the corner, staring at the desk and the papers on it, scribbling whatever he could. "I'm peachy."
He huffed, standing up to go outside. "I'm getting my own drink. I'll be right back."
"Loki?" Bruce called.
Loki pulled away and sat on his heels as Thor wept silently, his head lowered. Loki's lips went into a thin line as he turned to Bruce with a sad expression.
"We're fine." He mumbled as he went back to trying to coax Thor out of his misery. "Thor, it hasn't happened yet, calm down."
Loki frowned when he didn't.
"Please look at me, Thor. I do not want to you to think I am dead when I am not!" He scolded.
"I do not wish this to happen." Thor mumbled. "And for Jane? Mother and you died helping me save her, I do not know if I could- what if she does get it in the near future?"
"Hush." Loki wiped his brother's tears away and used him as his mattress. "Say no more. Please. Let us savor this moment. Please?"
"Because it might be our last." Loki added in his thoughts.
"Aye."
Thor's expression was still sad, so Loki did the only thing he could think of to cheer his brother up. "Thor, never doubt that I love you." He whispered, looking up at his brother's upside down face. "So please, stop mourning. I am not dead."
"I love you too." Thor wiped his own tears away, embracing Loki.
"Now give us a kiss." Loki puckered up.
Thor swatted his lips away and chuckled sadly, but Loki was content with just that, knowing that he was still part of his brothers life, even just a bit.
oOo
Thor had stopped weeping and was now cradling his sleeping brother. Loki had passed out a few minutes ago and the rest of the team had returned to watch the rest of the movie.
"What happened to baby brother?" Tony asked with a soda in hand.
"He was tired." Thor mumbled. "Loki said he'd rather sleep the thoughts off."
"Like Clint is doing right now?" Natasha smacked the cold drink in Clint's face waking him up. "Rise and shine archer. It's your lucky day. No drinks, just soda."
"Soda's fine." Clint took it and drank some of it. "Nice wake up call."
"You can sleep later"
"Why is Loki not allowed to wake up and I am?" He frowned at Natasha, who snorted and sat next to him.
"I don't know." She smirked. "I just got here."
"Loki is no longer in the movie." Thor muttered. "So he told me he would just have to sleep it off."
"Okay, let's just finish it." Bruce had his fourth cup of tea for the entire day and was still going at it. "I'm tired and tomorrow is a big day."
"For what?" Clint chugged his soda.
"Building the rest of that container." Tony pointed. "Big daddy Steve said it's only a few minutes more and it's bed time."
"I didn't say that." Steve frowned.
"Implied then."
"Can we all talk silently then?" Thor asked politely. "I do not wish to wake Loki now that he has found sleep again. I believe what he dealt with today is far too exhausting than anything else."
"No problem." Natasha toned down the volume.
Thor and Jane were now back in London, and went to Jane's apartment. Of course they saw far stranger things than they expected. Like Darcy and Ian lounging about while Erik had no pants on.
Thor saw the shelf and placed Mjolnir there.
"That is so cute." Tony piped.
"I thought it was heavy?" Bruce wondered. "Not even the Hulk could lift it."
"It is only heavy for those who are not worthy of it and when it needs to be heavy." Thor blabbed. "But I have a thought that perhaps your Captain could lift Mjolnir, for she was not able to damage your shield."
'You think so?" Steve raised an eyebrow.
"Aye, perhaps another time." He nodded.
"Are you well, Erik?" Thor asked.
He chuckled and stared. "Your brother isn't coming, is he?"
"Loki is..." He hesitated. "Dead."
"Oh , Thank God!" Erik breathed.
"What the hell!?" Tony mumbled lowly. "That's insensitive as hell."
"He doesn't know." Natasha answered. "Even up till now in the movie, none of them, not even Thor knows what happened to Loki. And if you also tell Clint that news, of course he'll say the same thing."
"And I am glad that is not our case." Thor whispered, cradling Loki's peaceful form. "And Loki is far too deep in sleep to hear it."
"Why?" Steve asked. "Anything he might do if he did?"
"A prank or two." Thor shrugged.
Thor looked at him with confusion.
"I'm so sorry." Erik hugged him.
"Thank you."
"He's totally bonkers." Tony sighed.
"And what about Clint then?" Bruce asked. "Do you think the same effects are applied to you?"
"I'm a fighter." Clint shrugged.
Back on Svartalfheim the stick glowed green and an Einherjar saw the ship that brought Thor, Loki and Jane to the planet. He used it to return to Asgard. He went back to see Odin in the palace.
"Don't you think this is suspicious?" Tony couldn't place it.
"Forgive me, my liege." He said. "I've returned from the Dark world with news."
"Thor?"
"There's no sign of Thor, or the weapon, but-" He took a step closer. "We found a body."
Odin paused for a moment.
"Loki."
"There is something amiss." Thor narrowed his eyes. "I know not- I- the body was left, but what was that green light before- in Svartalfheim?"
"Do you think you could have been duped?" Clint raised an eyebrow. "Twice?"
Thor looked at his brother's sleeping form. "I know not, I've thought Loki dead before, but I don't know anymore. Hopefully we are all just tired and what we are thinking is false."
"Hopefully." Natasha mumbled.
"Shouldn't get used to the idea though." Clint huffed.
Erik started drawing along the map, that of course lead to Greenwich. Thor summoned Mjolnir and they were ready to fight. A lot of things happened, especially when Malekith arrived and the Convergence began to take place.
Ian and Darcy placed the Objects Erik told them about while Jane ran the controls and Thor fought with the Dark Elves and Malekith.
"Mew Mew!" Darcy pointed.
Thor and Malekith were transported through the realms while Malekith landed back in Greenwich and Thor ended up in the underground train station.
"Okay, this is funny." Tony smirked.
"You know how a train works?" Natasha turned to Thor, who merely shrugged. "You Asgardians are a surprise."
"We are known for advance technology." Thor said with a frown. "I am not as stupid as many think I am. Loki just happens to be a little smarter."
"How do I get to Greenwich?"
"Take this train, three stops." A woman answered and when the breaks almost hit, she stopped herself by placing her hand on Thor's chest. "Sorry." She mumbled while Thor just smiled politely at her, with so much innocence.
"I question who's the playboy." Tony crossed his arms.
"You call that hitting on somebody?" Clint chuckled. "That's Thor being Thor. Everyone wants him."
"Really?" Bruce smiled curiously.
"Not this again." Steve said. "I hear it everywhere."
"What?" Thor asked.
"Even Hill wants to get some of that muscles." Natasha laughed.
"Malekith!"
"The Darkness returns, Asgardian. Have you come to witness the end of your universe?"
"I've come to accept your surrender."
Thor threw the gadget spear and Malekith caught it, Jane pushed the button and Malekith's arm disappeared. The Avengers all gaped at this, looking in awe at the brilliance of their plan. No sooner, Thor rushed towards Malekith and grabbed his hammer, throwing it at Malekith as Jane used it to transport him to Svartalfheim.
"Thor NO!" Jane screamed
"JANE!" Erik shouted.
The ship fell but as Jane threw herself on Thor, nothing happened. Erik had saved the two of them and it appeared right at Malekith in the Dark World and crushed him.
"Everybody okay?" Erik asked.
A couple of days later, Jane, Erik, Darcy and Ian are at the apartment having breakfast quietly.
"He's gonna come back." Darcy blabbed. "Except, you know, last time he was gone for like two years."
"Well, it's only been two days so."
"Did he say anything before he left?" Erik asked.
"Yeah, he had to figure some stuff out with his father. He kind of committed treason, on our way out."
Jane looked away, eating her breakfast.
"The end?" Steve wondered.
"I don't think it's the end yet." Bruce mumbled.
"I have to see Jane when we get back." Thor mumbled. "But I fear she may have to wait a little longer."
"Let me guess." Tony pointed at Loki.
"Aye." Thor nodded.
Odin sat on the throne while Thor stood not far from him, down the few set of stairs.
"You once said there would never be a wiser King than me. You were wrong. The alignment has brought all the realms together. Every one of them saw you offer your life to save them." Odin eyed him. "What can Asgard offer its new King in return?"
"That is odd." Thor tilted his head. "I would have thought he would have screamed at me by now."
"Not used to compliments?" Tony wiggled his eyebrows.
"No."
"My life." Thor said. "Father, I cannot be King of Asgard."
"You threw Kingship out of the way?" Clint flustered. "You just threw that away?"
"I will protect Asgard and all the realms with my last and every breath, but I cannot do so from that chair. Loki for all his grave imbalance understood rule as I know I never will. The brutality, the sacrifice, it changes you. I'd rather be a good man than a great king."
Loki shifted in his sleep, burying himself on Thor's chest as Thor did what he could to keep Loki asleep.
"Shh..." Thor mumbled.
"Is this my son I hear, or the woman he loves?" Odin asked.
"When you speak, I never hear mother's voice." Thor sighed. "This is not for Jane, Father. She does not know what I came here to say. Now forbid me to see her or say she can rule at my side, it changes nothing."
"Damn commitment." Tony cursed.
"One son who wanted the throne too much." He sighed. "Another who will not take it. Is this my legacy?"
"Loki died with honor." Thor stared. "I shall try to live the same. Is that not legacy enough."
Odin nodded his head and Thor offered Mjolnir to him. Odin just waved a hand to dismiss him. "It belongs to you." He tiredly said. "If you are worthy of it."
"I shall try to be."
"Something is not right." Thor couldn't place it at all. "I do not know what, but surely there is something amiss."
"I don't see it." Bruce stared. "What do you mean?"
"Well... he is my father but... But something feels wrong. I know not if my future self feels it, but I do, and I do not know what-"
"Maybe he still grieves." Natasha suggested.
"Perhaps, clouding his judgement- I know not."
"I cannot give you my blessing, nor can I wish you good fortune."
"I know."
"If I were proud of the man my son had become, even that I could not say. It would speak only from my heart. Go, my son."
Thor smiled.
"Those words." Thor bit his lips, turning to his sleeping brother and back to the screen.
"Thank you, Father."
And Thor walked away, far through the distance and when he was far enough, A green light washed away Odin's image, showing Loki sitting on the throne holding on to Gungnir.
"No." Loki smiled devilishly. "Thank you."
"HO-LY SHIT." Tony turned to Thor and pointed at the screen. "Is that something connected to this!"
"That bastard." Clint huffed. "No offense, but hell, we thought he was dead. What was that!? Just what the hell was that!?"
"Revenge?" Natasha questioned.
"He is alive." Thor made a strange expression, frowning at his sleeping brother, who was still peacefully on Thor.
"Maybe it's more than that." Bruce said. "Question is, how did he survive? Was that an illusion or was he brought back from the dead?"
"Should we tell Loki that he is?" Steve suggested, but Thor shook his head.
"It is better if he knew nothing of it. My brother already shares enough grief and regret in his heart, and to add more would only cause him pain. I do not wish to add that to his list."
"But he duped you." Clint pointed out.
"All the more reason not to give him any ideas." Thor shook Loki awake. "Brother, wake up. We are going."
"W-where?" Loki rubbed his eyes and stared at the Avengers. "What are you looking at?" He snapped.
Nobody answered him, as Thor got up and pulled him along with him. Loki was still half asleep and tumbled slightly as Thor placed a hand on his waist and dragged him to the door. Loki squeaked when he felt Thor's fingers ghost up a ticklish rib and pinched his brother's arm, earning a yelp from the older one. Loki merely yawned and was pulled towards the door again, Thor's hands planted at his brother's waist to keep him from moving, which of course, proved difficult since Loki hated it.
"Thank you for this, my friends." He said, pulling a confused Loki away. "Good Night."
The door shut.
"What was that about?" Tony questioned.
"Inner conflict." Natasha answered.
oOo
When they got back to the infirmary room, Loki and Thor slept on the same bed but Loki was no longer asleep. He stared up at Thor's face and decided now was the time to execute his plan. He placed a spell on Thor and entangled himself from his brother's limbs. He made sure to make Thor as comfortable as possible while Loki's magic messed with the surveillance camera. He walked out, and teleported to where he thought the tesseract was, hoping that whatever his plan was, it would be a success.
Loki swallowed, seeing this chance to be the only one he had.
Later, Cordell and Tucker checked the security feed and saw that Loki wasn't in his room. They searched the area where they thought it was tampered and saw Loki up the hall where the tesseract was. The Other hovered slightly closer to the two Agents and grinned when he saw that Loki was indeed alone.
"Cats out of the bag." Tucker grinned.
