Long ago, a group of people lived, calling themselves "the Children of the Moon."
They lived far north near the polar circle.
Their civilization lived so far north that they spent most of the year in darkness, with only the moon and stars giving them light.
Their daily lives were shaped by the phases of the moon.
In complete darkness, during times of a new moon, rituals of forgiveness, renewal and rebirth commenced. Fasting occurred to purify themselves for the next cycle.
In full light, during times of a full moon, great feasts and celebrations were held to welcome the fulfillment of hopes and dreams. Resilience and growth were traits bestowed to them by the moon.
With their oddities with the day and the night, the Children of the Moon took the time to slow down and rest. Sleep was highly valued. A blessing it was to be able to sleep multiple times a day.
They were peaceful and happy.
But peace never lasts.
A neighboring region looking to expand beyond its borders set its site on the small archipelago and declared war.
The Children of the Moon fought valiantly, but in the end they were defeated.
The neighboring region wanted their new territory expunged before they started to settle the land; so they gave the Children of the Moon two weeks, from new moon to full moon, to leave the archipelago.
With their King and Queen dead, the Children of the Moon only had their two twin princesses to lead them to a new home.
On the first day of their expulsion, on the day of the new moon, one of the princesses gave an offering and said a prayer to the Original One asking for a new beginning for her people and guidance on where they should make their new home.
That night, the princess had a dream revealing to her one of the Original One's children. They had a white face and were shrouded in darkness, and they led her and her people to a group of isles in the south that were surrounded by sharp rocks.
This would be their new home.
After that day, the Children of the Moon traveled to the southernmost point of their territory to rest before fully leaving the archipelago.
On the last day of their expulsion, on the day of the full moon, one of the princesses gave an offering and said a prayer to the Original One asking for hope for her people's future and guidance on where they should make their new home.
That night, the princess had a dream revealing to her one of the Original One's children. They had a crescent on their forward and were shrouded with light, and they led her and her people to a group of isles in the south that were filled with dense forests.
This would be their new home.
The next morning, both princesses told each other of the dreams they had depicting their new home. With the differences in their dreams, they decided to go to their people and retell what they had seen.
With the retelling of their dreams towards their people, they asked each person to give an offering to the Original One and pray for clarity in the situation.
They then all slept for an hour, hoping to receive a vision.
When they all woke up, they realized they were being called towards two different paths. Half of their people received a dream about an isle under a full moon; while the other half saw a new moon.
They realized they were being split in two. They cried, burned incense and sang for the last time as one. Though they may be separating, they will always consider themselves Children of the Moon.
