Jurassic World: Return to Isla Nublar – Chapter 49: Return of Two Tyrants
A/N: Guess what everyone, I've finally figured out how I want this story to end! It's going to be an action-packed thriller, hopefully worthy of all the Jurassic Park endings that came before. This chapter will feature part one of the ending. Then there's part two and the epilogue to this great story. I don't want to go into too much detail, but at the end of this chapter, I'll reveal a little bit about my upcoming stories. Please enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own anything related to Jurassic Park except the very characters I've made up.
Sarah shook her husband awake and he groggily said, "What's going on . . .?"
"Shh. There's a pair of tyrannosaurs outside."
Malcolm sighed and turned over to go back to sleep. "Barney the dinosaur and his wife can wait till tomorrow." Apparently, he wasn't fully awake yet.
"Ian, there's a pair of T. rex outside."
Malcolm suddenly became fully aware of the situation. "Oh, you say tyrannosaurs? Where are they? Out this window?"
He peeked outside and saw the giant beasts as the tropical downpour drummed upon the trailer they were sleeping in. The pair of dinosaurs growled lowly to each other. Their bodies were almost as still as statues, but their heads scanned the area, as if looking for something.
Malcolm and Sarah hadn't seen a live Tyrannosaurus since their adventure in 1997; even still, they were amazed and terrified by the creatures. Taylor, who'd never seen a carnivore so large in her life (besides the mosasaur), was extremely petrified. Tyrannosaurus . . . she thought.
The three of them watched as the female T. rex took several steps upon her giant feet until her thick, heavy tail was visible. She raised her head nice and high and sniffed the air – no doubt sniffing for prey – moving her head to the left and to the right. Then she roared. The sound was so loud that the trailer mildly shook and birds flew out of the trees. A few howler monkeys could be heard in the distance.
"Why do we always seem to run into the worst carnivores?" Malcolm asked.
Suddenly, Grant, Dr. Sorkin, Ryan and the other soldiers entered the bedroom. Grant – know wearing his fedora (he'd taken it off earlier) – glanced out the window, dumbfounded. "It's a pair of Tyrannosaurus."
"We know," Sarah said, "believe me; those dinosaurs don't need an introduction. I'm curious to know why there are two tyrannosaurs. I thought only one existed on Nublar."
"We brought a few extra individuals over," Dr. Sorkin answered. "As Tyrannosaurus would have been the star attraction, we needed to have one on the ride at all times. If something happened to Rexy – perhaps if she got too sick to show to our public – we wouldn't have ship in another T. rex from Site B. Considering how hard it would be to get Rexy out of the jungle sometimes on the tour, we considered adding more tyrannosaurs to the enclosure so our guests would have a higher chance of seeing them–"
"Who cares about what you used to do with your rexes," Ryan interrupted. "I'm more interested to know what we're going to do about those blokes outside right now."
Before anyone answered, the female T. rex turned back toward the forest and made a low grunting sound. The male looked beneath him as three precocious youngsters dashed between his legs toward their mother. They squeaked and cawed loudly, wanting food. The mother lowered her head down to their level and began to sniff them each. Then she raised her head again and growled. The family of predators walked toward the Parasaurolophus carcass lying nearby. Once the babies saw the food, they started to rush over to the dead animal, only to be growled at by their mother. Her young allowed the female to inspect the carcass first. A flash of lightning lit up her enormous body as she bent down and latched her jaws onto the Parasaurolophus. Her mate walked up alongside her and began to eat as well.
Dr. Sorkin squinted her eyes, trying hard to see the baby T. rex. She nodded her head. "Yeah, these are the same ones we saw a few days ago."
"They were?" Ryan said.
"When did you get to see T. rex?" Grant asked.
"You remained in the trailer looking over those emails with Alexis on our first day here, remember? Most of the rest of us left to explore the nearby jungle."
"That's right."
Their attention was drawn back to the tyrannosaurs as the female roared at the male. He cowered – he'd tried to eat a part of the dinosaur the female wanted.
"There's not a lot of fleshy bits on the carcass," Taylor said. "What are they eating?"
"T. rex have strong jaws. They can eat anything from the flesh to the bones of their prey," Dr. Sorkin exclaimed.
"You're not helping, Doc," Ryan groaned.
The male Tyrannosaurus outside closed and reopened his jaws once or twice before taking another bite of the hadrosaur. He placed his foot on the carcass to hold it down as his head pulled back, ripping out hundreds of pounds of meat and bone. His jaws held the meat in place; then the animal began to crush the bones of its meal in its jaws. Bone snapped in pieces. Behind the adults, the baby tyrannosaurs growled and squeaked at their parents – they were still hungry. The mother grabbed hunk of meat and dropped it before the babies. The hungry creatures wasted no time at all tearing into their food with their sharp little teeth.
"Is anyone actually thinking about what we're going to do?" Ryan said. "Or is everyone that distracted?"
"I think they're preoccupied enough to leave us alone," said Grant.
"He's right," Sarah agreed. "If they continue eating the dead dinosaur, that will keep them busy until they're full and we shouldn't have to worry about them attacking us."
Ryan shrugged. "Alright then. In the meantime, how about a midnight snack? I'm starving."
"I think I have some spare granola bars," Chuck offered.
"No thanks. I've had enough granola bars in the last few days to last me a while–"
A sound came from on top of the trailer as something scraped against the part of the roof that lied underneath, making an ear-retching, screeching sound. Everyone looked at the ceiling with a sudden sense of alarm.
"What is that?" Taylor asked. She was getting even more scared due to the sound.
Dr. Sorkin said, "I think that was a roof panel."
"But those aren't supposed to come off. Aren't they connected to the rest of the trailer by something strong?"
"They're not supposed to come off, but with decades of no maintenance, who knows what might happen."
Unfortunately, the screeching sound continued. Malcolm looked outside – as he'd expected, the Tyrannosaurus family had noticed too. The parents and youngsters had already finished most of the carcass and were now paying full attention to the trailer. "They've noticed too."
The screeching didn't stop – the heavy rain continued to cause it to slip out of position and it got closer to the edge of the roof. Finally, the panel gave way and landed on the muddy ground with a loud clang. The female rex growled; her reptilian eyes glared at the trailer, suspecting something was wrong. She slowly twitched the claws on her hands and sniffed the air. Emitting a growl, she started making her way toward the trailer! The male followed in pursuit. Instinctively, the babies ran toward some nearby foliage to hide from the potential threat.
Levine, Eric, Kailey and the others made quick progress to the coast. Finally, after what seemed like ages, they'd broken through the jungle foliage and made their way past the perimeter fence gate and onto the beach.
Kailey squealed. "I can't believe we finally made it!" she cried. "We made it to the coast!"
"Sand! The ocean!" Rob exclaimed. He knelt to the ground and placed his hands in the damp sand. The sound of the waves crashing on the seashore entered his ears. He looked out to see and saw where the water met the sky, miles away in the horizon. A beautiful array of stars was outstretched above them. "When I consider your heavens, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place . . ." he whispered.
"Where's the ship?" Stanley asked. He recalled that they should have reached the North Dock, not the beach. "I thought we–"
Eric said, "We must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. Sometimes it can be hard to determine where the path is, especially at night and especially when the road's in need of maintenance."
"I see the ship!" Kailey exclaimed.
Tim winced. "Where?"
Kailey pointed to the left and saw, a few hundred yards down the coastline was the North Dock, and the USS Mars. The ship was like a dark, silent giant, sitting motionless in the water at night. Lights on the ship were the only things that gave away its position.
Eric snapped his fingers. "Great. Let's go."
"Tiny problem," Lex observed. "The coast from here to the North Dock is too steep."
She was right: further along the coast, the beach submerged and the sharp incline of the base of a mountain bet the ocean. There were two choices they could make: either go back and find the right path directly to the North Dock, or–"
"I'll just give them a call," Eric said. "Then they can bring a zodiac to pick us up."
"Any ideas?" Ryan asked. He looked over at Taylor: the girl was hyperventilating dramatically; if her breathing was any indication, her heart rate had increased drastically. Her heart was beating so fast that it could be heard pumping. A tear began to stream down the side of her face.
Sarah went over and sat beside her. "It's OK . . . it's OK. Just try your best to stay calm and not make any noise, alright?"
Taylor nodded and nuzzled up next to the paleontologist for comfort. Sarah looked back out the window – the dinosaurs were no more than ten feet of the trailer; they fanned out on both side of the establishment – the male on the left and the female on the right.
There was absolute silence inside the trailer until Taylor whispered, "Where did they go?"
No one knew the answer to that. Taylor wiped a tear out of her eye and thought she saw a shadow coming through the curtained window next to her bed. Though she really didn't want to see the carnivorous beast, Taylor decided she'd feel much better if she knew where it was. She slowly reached over and whooshed open the curtains . . . the tyrannosaur's large head was right next to the window!
"Ah!" Taylor shrieked.
This drew the animal's attention. Originally, she'd bent down in this spot to investigate the fallen roof panel. Now she had no fascination for the object and her large eye peered through her window. The dinosaur's head was enormous, all five-feet of it! Thunder clapped and lighting flashed, allowing a clear view of the head – a large eyeball with the eyesight of an eagle, flaring nostrils at the end of the snout and pointed teeth. Rain water plopped continuously on the head before running off the animal's chin and fangs. Could the T. rex see them through the glass?
Taylor reached over to close the curtain, but was stopped by Grant, who stood beside her bed. Don't, he mouthed. He knew that the movement would interest the dinosaur even more.
Malcolm silently peered out the window beside his own bed – all he saw of the male was the left leg, covered in beautiful mosaic scales, like those of an alligator. He saw the clawed toes flex. Behind him, his long tail slowly swayed from side to side. His stomach was the only thing he could see because the top of the trailer blocked the rest of Malcolm's view. A sniffing sound coming from on top of the trailer suggested the male T. rex was curiously sniffing the roof.
On the opposite side of the trailer, Taylor's breath became ragged as the Tyrannosaurus rex breathed on the glass, causing it to fog up slightly. The fog on the window quickly vanished as rain drops fell against the glass. The dinosaur slowly opened and closed its jaws before briefly yawning, its tongue curling a bit in the mouth. Her pupils swiveled as she continued to survey the room – it could definitely see through the glass.
While Taylor watched with fright and terror in her eyes, only half of Grant was scared; the other half of what he was experiencing right now was wonder. He admired the theropod's teeth and realized that they weren't all that sharp – in fact, T. rex teeth are some of the dullest in the theropod group. But this was an advantage rather than a disadvantage, as this would have allowed the monster a stronger bite that was able to crunch through bone. Grant never wanted to be on the receiving end of those teeth.
The female T. rex roared and knocked her head into the trailer and the whole trailer shook, causing Taylor to yelp in fear. Now Grant knew that the animal was aware prey was inside. He imagined that the Parasaurolophus carcass hadn't really been enough to fill the beast's stomach and she wanted more food. The glass of water on the side table tipped over and spilled. "She's trying to see if we're accessible," Grant assumed.
As the animal continued to peer through the glass with its eye, Grant whispered, "Let's try and sneak out of the trailer."
"I don't know if that's such a good idea," Malcolm returned. "Unless we can find a way to escape detection, we'll be even worse off outside than in here. Once we're out there, we're obviously prey to them."
"I don't think we have much of a choice though. You and I should know better than anyone, Ian. These dinosaurs aren't dumb; they know prey is in here. It's only a matter of time before they break in to find it."
Malcolm sighed and slowly got out of bed. "OK then . . . no sudden movements."
Slowly everyone started slowly backing out of the bedroom. The monstrous T. rex strained to see where her prey was going. After they left the room and entered the kitchen/living/dining room, they heard heavy footsteps outside – the creature must have learned she could see inside through any window. The nostrils contracting and expanding, she growled, perhaps temporarily confused as to what her prey was up to.
"Any better ideas?" Ryan asked. "She knows we're on the move."
"I've got one," Dr. Sorkin said. She reached into one of the cabinets in the kitchen and found exactly what she was looking for: some plates. Quietly closing the cabinet, she looked at the others. "OK, when I say go, I need everyone to be ready to scram out the door. OK? No delays. When I say go, just–"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, we get it, Doc."
Dr. Sorkin lunged the plates as far as she could into the bedroom, shattering quickly. The female rex looked back toward the bedroom: perfect.
"Go!" Dr. Sorkin whispered and everyone hustled as quietly as they could out the door. Grant peeked around the corner.
"Where do we go from here?" he asked.
"Into the jungle, I assume."
In order to do this without being caught by the tyrannosaurs, they'd have to navigate behind other trailers to perhaps reach the section of jungle in front of the laboratory. That way, they'd have the laboratory between them and the dinosaurs.
The male rex also heard the sound of shattering glass and was looking in the bedroom window, so Grant gestured for everyone to follow him to the trailer next to the one they were sleeping in. He checked on the male rex once again, grabbed Taylor's arm and quietly crept across the gap between the two trailers. Next, Sarah made the journey across successfully. She turned to Dr. Sorkin.
You next, she mouthed.
Dr. Sorkin started across the gap and just as she reached the other side she barely noticed the male T. rex look in her direction! She quickly threw herself behind the front of the trailer where Grant. Did the T. rex see them?
Dr. Sorkin breathed, "That was too–" Grant pushed his group of four behind the other side of the trailer just as the male T. rex's head came around to the side where they previously stood. The male T. rex growled and sniffed the ground.
"So . . . we've got an angry T. rex on our tails," Sarah said, "any ideas?"
Grant nodded. "We'll just have to keep hiding from it and hope the others are OK."
"If we can reach the power box," Taylor began, "do you think we can turn the lights off so the dinosaurs can't see us."
"No good. That only would blind us." Lightning flashed again and with a loud thunderclap, the rain fell upon the island even harder than before. This would make it harder to hear the tyrannosaurs before they came into sight.
"Eric, the zodiac is already on its way," Rebecca said.
"Thanks, Rebecca."
"Anytime."
The call ended and Eric's group watched the shapes of the soldiers entering a zodiac boat still on the ship – there were three soldiers on board. Once they were secured, the boat was grasped by the claws of a metallic crane, hoisted over the side of the ship and dropped atop the water. Then the boat zipped across the water toward them.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Levine yelled, waving his arms. "We're over here!"
The others joined in and the boat was able to pinpoint exactly where they were located. The boat pulled up alongside the shore. "Alright, climb aboard you guys," one of the soldiers ordered.
"Finally, we're getting off this island," Tim said beneath his breath. "I can't believe it!"
"I know, right?" Lex agreed.
One of the soldiers turned the motor on and they turned around, heading back in the direction of the USS Mars slightly to the north of them. Levine looked back across the water as they left the coast . . . and noticed a hump shape in the water not too far from them. It looked like the back of a giant sea monster rising from the depths after taking a fresh breath of air. Triangular scutes adorned its back. Finally, a shark-like tail rose out of the water as the creature made the ultimate plunge.
Levine's eyes widened. Wait a minute . . . large aquatic reptile with a tail fluke . . . Several aquatic creatures had tail flukes like the one he just saw, but Levine could already cross out several possible candidates: it definitely wasn't a whale (though it was large enough to be one!), as the skin was scaly and the tail was more like a shark. It must have been a reptile. Ichthyosaurs and metriorhynchids (they were extinct types of marine crocodiles) were reptiles and had tail flukes, but no metriorhynchids had tails that large and there was no sign of a dorsal fin, as seen in ichthyosaurs. It must have been the same creature Dr. Sorkin, Grant, Ryan and Taylor saw the other day: the mosasaur! If Levine was correct about his latest assumption, the animal could be hunting . . .
"Did you see if he got them?" Malcolm asked. He, Ryan and the other soldiers were up against the door of their trailer. To their right was the menacing figure of the male Tyrannosaurus. Somewhere to their left, behind their trailer was the female, presumably still searching the bedroom for the source of the sound.
"I don't think it did," Chuck answered. "Someone would have screamed."
They watched in silence as the male predator walked around the side of the trailer Grant and his group were hiding behind. Perhaps they'd found some place to hide? In any case, they weren't out of danger either. Then Malcolm had an idea.
He said, "Where's the female rex?"
Chuck peeked around the corner and saw her still sniffing the bedroom window; Chuck could tell she was losing interest however and would probably figure out they were no longer in the trailer. "She's still sniffing the bedroom," Chuck whispered.
"OK, if we can get across the gap between us and the other row of trailers across from us without being seen, we might be able to get away from the rexes undetected."
"Wouldn't it just be more simple to run into the forest?"
"The forest guarantees no obstacles for the Tyrant Lizard King. They're big creatures, but they can move through the jungle with surprising speed.
"Alright, let's move." Quickly and quietly, the group moved away from the door to the trailer and trekked cautiously toward the other trailers. Malcolm wanted to find a way to rescue the others too if necessary, but he wasn't able to do that unless he knew where they were. He turned back to Chuck. "How many darts do you have?"
"Three. They're big ones too. Not sure it will knock the dinosaurs out immediately though, so I've kind of been holding off to use them till it's absolutely necessary."
"Good. So let's–"
A short roar came from behind. They glanced back and their nightmares became real – the female Tyrannosaurus was staring right at them from beside the trailer. She roared again and bounded after them.
"Oh . . . no," Ryan breathed. "Run!"
They broke into a sprint and the T. rex increased speed. She tore after them, her feet leaving large footprints in the mud. Malcolm reached the other trailer first and everyone dashed in between two trailers. The female continued to run and crushed her body against one trailer, causing it to lean to the animal's right . . . right where Malcolm and the others were.
"It's going to crush us!" soldier #2 exclaimed.
"Race to the other side!" Malcolm said. Everyone obeyed but they weren't quick enough and the trailer continued to fall toward them with alarming speed. "Brace yourselves!"
Everyone ducked; Malcolm covered his head with his hands and knelt to the ground. The trailer fell with a loud crash! But Malcolm never felt it squish them. A roar was heard from the female Tyrannosaurus. Malcolm was astonished they weren't crushed beneath the trailer when it fell. He looked up and realized that it was leaning against the trailer next to them. They'd been spared! Roaring again, with a quick headbutt, the trailer was pushed by the T. rex and it slid from over her prey, exposing them to her maw. She ducked down to attack them and Malcolm and the others fled the beast as fast as they could.
The mother Tyrannosaurus grew angry at how her prey escaped. With another load roar, she turned toward them to continue the chase!
A/N: The two largest carnivores in the story have returned for the final battle! Was this chapter exciting enough for you guys? I hope so. Now it's time for me to reveal a little bit of what I'll be doing next on fanfiction. Firstly, I'm hoping to do two stories at once. One will be Jurassic Park . . . related (and very exciting), and the other will be from another story "archive" that I won't reveal just yet. The other exciting news is that I'm also doing a third project. It's not a "story", but it will be an interactive fanfiction that where you guys and gals, the readers, will be able to ask questions to the survivors of this story; it will sort of be laid out like a talk show, except it won't focus on weight-loss programs and the such. Sound cool? But wait, there's more. Hosting this fanfiction will be a pair of characters from another story "archive". In other words, this story will be a crossover. How exciting! What do you guys think of this idea? Be sure to let me know. Anyways, that's all for now. Remember, if you haven't already, please be sure to check out my poll, favorite, follow and review this story and I'll see you next week. R&r!
