November 2002
Snow had already begun to fall early, having covered the grounds in Malfoy Manor in at least five inches; giving it a christmassy feel to which Draco hadn't felt around the manor in a long time. Narcissa had already decorated the manor in holly and tinsel and had even put the Christmas tree up early, much to Tori's approval. Draco had learned that Tori loved Christmas more than anything. But although they still had a few weeks until Christmas day, there was her twentieth birthday to celebrate first and their one year anniversary.
Lucius had taken Narcissa away to Cairo especially so that Draco and Tori could have the manor to themselves, something which Draco was rather grateful for. But he was filled with nerves, he had never gone to so much planning and trouble when he had been with Pansy, so he could only hope that Astoria would like what he had planned for the two of them.
He had instructed the house elves to put twinkling lights on the terrace and instead of a cooked meal, he had set up a tent filled with cushions and a warming charm and a picnic basket filled with treats that Tori liked and some butterbeers. His hands went into his pockets and he pulled out the little velvet box that contained Druella Black's engagement ring which his grandmother had given him on his last visit to her. When Druella had asked him if he had found someone to settle with and Draco had told her of his intention to propose to Astoria, she had given it to him.
Tori was getting dressed, not knowing where or what they were doing to celebrate their anniversary and she no idea that Draco was going to propose to her. He put the box back into his pocket and listened to her footsteps walking down the staircase. When she reached the bottom and saw that she wore an emerald green set of dress robes, he felt his heart skip a beat. Never before had he truly realised how much of a beauty that Astoria was.
"You look amazing." Draco whispered into her ear and kissing her cheek.
"Thanks, you look good too."
Draco smiled and poured her a glass of wine before leading Tori out onto the terrace, her smile growing wider and her eyes filled with tears of happiness at Draco's gesture.
"Draco it's lovely." Tori gushed as they stepped inside the tent.
"I would have taken you out but I wanted to do something a little different than dining out."
"Thank you, it's lovely." she said as she sat down on the cushions.
"Happy Birthday Tori." Draco replied, picking up a present next to where he sat.
Tori opened it, speechless as she observed the diamond necklace sat in the black velvet box.
"Draco, it's beautiful. You didn't have to spend so much on me."
He placed the necklace around her neck and did up the clasp, admiring it on her when she turned back round to face him. The two kissed each other slowly, wrapped in each other's arms as the kiss deepened and they fell back onto the cushions, with Tori laying on top of Draco and her hands gripping his waist lightly and she pulled away when she a lump in his pocket. Draco sat up, with Tori in his lap and pulled out the box.
"Another present?"
Draco nodded and smiled, "This one is to celebrate our one year mark. One year ago today, we officially became a couple." he said.
"I know, it was the best birthday I ever had."
"I think this one will be better."
Tori raised an eyebrow, "How so?" she questioned.
Draco opened the box to reveal the engagement ring causing Tori to place a hand to her mouth in shock. Draco's heart pounded in his chest with excitement as he plucked up the courage to ask Tori the question that needed to be said.
"Astoria Jemima Greengrass, I love you and I can't imagine anyone else by my side for the rest of my life. Tori, will you marry me?"
Silence. Tori continued to stare down at the ring, hand still over her mouth and both their hearts pounding faster and faster in their chests. She hadn't been expecting him to propose to her, especially with a ring that looked like a family heirloom. Whoever it had belonged to, surely the person who bought it had good taste and it must have been worth a fortune; not that Tori cared about how much it was worth. Eventually her eyes met Draco's and she smiled.
"Draco, yes. Yes I will marry you." she whispered.
He couldn't stop the wide grin that formed on his face as he took the ring out of the box and delicately placed it on her finger. Tori grinned back at him before the two shared another passionate kiss, enjoying the marking of their one year anniversary and the idea that this time next year, they might even be a married couple.
