Chapter 34: Caiyi

From the previous chapter:

I landed on my back, my last sight one of the night sky, orange tinted with red, the deep dark red of blood.

I awoke to an eerily silent forest under an ashen grey sky. I looked around for Ruidi, Tim, and Charlie but there was nobody there.

I tried sitting up, but a sharp pain in my side forced me back onto the ground. I rolled over and timidly tested my wings. They moved fine, but hurt a lot.

Where are the others? I barely remember anything before or after he- or she- knocked me out cold. The wind ruffled my feathers. Dimly, I remembered something Neesik had said during the weapons training program. "A higher location will help you when you're looking for someone. In the instance of those who have wings-" here he had looked pointedly at us- "soar to the heights."

I flapped my wings, once, twice, three times, then leaped into the air. I soared upward in a lazy spiral and looked onto the landscape below.

I almost fell down right then and there.

Cut plainly onto the landscape, visible only from bird's eye, were the words- "Your friends are alive. Hand us the Shadow Vortex, son of Erebus, and we shall make certain that they stay that way."
