CHAPTER I:
To grasp how this ordeal came to be, you must understand it all started with an unexpected family emergency. What happened in Hawkins had reached a national news station or two causing a trickle effect of concerned family members. Members from both sides of Nancy and Mike's family.
The open threat by their Grandparent, Karen's father, to drive down and check on "the lot of them" prompted Ted and Karen to pack three bags.
Holly was tagging along with them for this 'Four Day Weekend' road trip.
Leaving Nancy and Mike to fend for themselves. With Nancy in charge, of course.
What brought the two siblings and their friends to their predicament now, with every able-bodied one of them, including Eleven, Will, Jonathan, and Jonathan's friend Argyle?
Joyce decided they would stay in Hawkins for the rest of Lenora Hills High School's spring break at the cabin. To help Hopper recuperate before returning to California. If California was even an option now.
All the friends together spread out amongst the kitchen and living space of the Wheeler's home were the two boxes filled to the brim with loose notes and filled binders, at least four, and a random book or two.
...
You see, the afternoon after Dustin told Wayne Munson about the heroic acts of his nephew Eddie, Dustin received a phone call from Wayne asking if he would like Eddie's things.
So, after some begging and pestering at Steve. After a quiet look toward Max's home, the two drove through the trailer park. Steve shoved the last of the two boxes while Dustin carefully placed the guitar on the back seat, only to rush to the other side, climb into the back, and shut the door. He ignored Steve as he opened a box.
"Where's Robin," asked Dustin.
Steve looked at him from the rear-view mirror. "She's volunteering. Why?"
"I can't read this." Dustin lifted the notebook flipping through page after page of the written word.
"Why? Is it in Russian," asked Steve, smiling at his joke. Only for the smile to disappear as he looked out at the few remaining trailers.
At the center stood Max's 'home,' with another trailer to the left. Then there was Eddie's covered in caution tape. A gaping hole at its side left the kitchen exposed, an open door leading to Eddie's untouched room, now empty of the boxes hidden below the bed and the prized guitar. Dustin no doubt viewed this as a relic of greatness.
A busted truck began with a pop of exhaust. Wayne Munson gave Steve and Dustin a nod as he was ushered by workers, who wrapped the temporary chain link with locks and DANGER signs.
A worker knocked at the BMW's hood. Steve broke from his trance, waved thanks, and backed out to the main drive.
"No, I just can't read this chicken scratch," exclaimed Dustin.
"What, let me see?" Dustin shoved the book into Steve's vision. The car swerved to the right. "Dude! Wait till I pull over!" Steve pulled to the side.
"Sorry..." Dustin stopped shaking the notebook.
Steve focused on his vision. "Oh yeah, Robin's the only one who can read that." He looked at his watch. "She should be finished soon."
...
"A duo, that's cool." Stated Robin as she flung herself into the front seat. "What's up," Robin looked in the direction of Steve, then to Dustin, and back again at Steve.
Dustin thrust his arm in her direction, barely missing her head with the notebook he held. Robin grabbed at the stiff book to look inside. It was filled with blue and black squiggles and loops. She could only assume they were an odd attempt at handwriting. She saw the most significant text on the page, and thinking it was the title, Robin spoke.
"The Stronghold at Xak Tsaroth," asked Robin with her best attempt at the last words. "What am I looking at here?"
"Told you she could read it," said Dustin defiantly. With his typical bright smile.
Steve drummed his steering wheel and looked at Dustin. "When did I say she couldn't read it? Not once on our way here did I say Robin wouldn't be able to read it."
"Boys, Boys, let's slow down." Robin glanced back in the direction of Dustin. "What's all this anyway..." she asked, her hand swirling a half-hazard motion. Only to trail off as Robin noticed the guitar resting against the backseat and door. She set the notebook in her lap. This was 'Eddie's stuff.' Robin focused on the open box. A recognizable glint of cassette case plastic caught her eye. She motioned to Dustin. His hand hovered, finding the case. He tosses it into her lap.
Robin lifted it. It looked similar to the Iron Maiden case he shook at her during their brief panic to find music for Nancy. "What exactly is 'The Stronghold at Xak Tsaroth'" she asked. Robin looked at Steve, and he nodded. She removed the tape.
"I think it's a D&D campaign."
"A what now," asks Robin. Her focus was on the cassette space of the car's dashboard.
"A campaign. You know, a Dungeons and Dragons adventure." Dustin clarified before continuing, his attention on the loose notes covered in stats. "He did it. He actually did it. Eddie made his own D&D campaign." He pulls the page, eyes on the few words he can read. "He... you can customize your... we have to play this!"
"You want us to do what now?" Steve focused on the road.
"We have to play this campaign. For Eddie, we have to play this," insisted Dustin.
"Sure, for Eddie." Robin slid the cassette into the player. The three friends continued their way to their destination. The guitar riffs of 'Run to the Hills' echo through the car's cabin.
...
Mike held the front door open as Dustin walked past, and Robin ducked under his arm. He stepped to the side for Steve. Each new arrival has a box of odd goods and a guitar. He shrugged, supposing it was important.
"Mike was that…" asked Nancy. Her voice trailed once she realized the house 'invaders' were Robin, Steve, and Dustin. Nancy smiled at the three. "What's all that," she said, jumping to her tiptoes to look over her younger brother's tall frame. The sound of over-used breaks announced the presence of the four she had been expecting.
Shifting the box to avoid a cut from the thin cardboard box, Robin answered, "Eddies things."
Nancy paused. Still trying to figure out what her focus should be.
...
Out piled Will, Eleven, Jonathan, and Jonathan's friend—whose name escaped her. She gave Mike a soft—sisterly—shove out of the way to greet their newest arrivals.
Lucas and Erica are inside, sitting in the kitchen. In true sibling Sinclair fashion, arguing over whatever the group decided to do. "I suggest a movie."
"A movie?! Right now, with everything that's going on! Is that really a good idea," retorted Lucas with a huff.
Erica glowered at her older brother. "I didn't say Theater, dingus, I was referring to the Video Home System—you know their—VHS!" she pointed in the direction of the Wheeler living room towards the television.
"Might I make a suggestion," spoke Dustin once in the door frame within earshot of the siblings. He set the box down on the kitchen table between Lucas and Erica. Dustin motioned for the others. Robin set down her box as Steve gently laid the guitar on the kitchen countertop. "We play D&D. Specifically, this one." Dustin held tight to the notebook from inside his box. He looked at his friends, all confused, Will, the only one present, with the slightest bit of curiosity on his face. "Eddie did it, guys, we all thought he was just talking big, but he actually did it! He made his own campaign."
Nancy squeezed Jonathan's shoulder before sauntering down the hall into another room. Many of the others expected Jonathan to follow suit.
"Dungeons and Dragons, really, there's way too many of us even if we all wanted to play," said Lucas.
"Yeah, man," agreed Mike.
"So we make our characters, introduce ourselves, then figure out a rotation or something. I don't know, but we have to play this! For Eddie, we have to play this," countered Dustin.
"Who's going to DM," asked Mike.
Dustin opened the notebook allowing the others a glance before handing it off to Robin. "Robin will do it."
Robin gave the group a nervous smile.
Suddenly Nancy reappeared a pile of paper in hand. She began to pass it out like she was in an advanced English class. "If we are going to play, we had better write everything we need to down, right?"
Her unexpected actions brought a large smile to Dustin's and even Mike's faces.
"Well, come on! We only have a few hours to get this started before I get hungry and want to order a pizza," Nancy announced. She grabbed Robin's forearm pulling her off in the direction of the living room.
Steve grabbed Robin's box. "You all heard the lady!" He followed his ex and best friend.
"Pizza? You guys got a Surfer Boy out here too," asked Argyle, excited head bob as he followed the rest into the spacious room ahead.
