A/N: I do hope that I wasn't keeping you guys waiting too long! But I started to work on other stuff, and with two writing courses this year in school, I'm somewhat drained for fanfiction.
What does it matter if he's inside? It's your apartment, Rin. Don't let him push you around. Just be forceful with him. It worked well enough last time.
Despite Rin's constant self-assuring, she couldn't seem to fit her key into the lock and open the front door. She used to be bothered constantly, wondering how Sesshomaru made his way inside her home when she wasn't around, but she just learned to become accustomed with his butting in like that. She had tried to ask, but he shrugged it off. The jerk.
No…it's okay…you'll just firmly tell him to get lost.
Taking a deep breath, Rin unlocked her door and stepped inside. Everything was quiet and still. It almost scared Rin. She silently crept her way through the house, hoping beyond all reason that Sesshomaru wasn't hiding behind some corner getting ready to frighten her. After a few minutes, she did find him. But it was in the last place that she expected to see him.
He was lying on her bed on his side, his long silver hair spread out behind him. One hand was cupping his stomach, and the other was falling over the edge of the bed. For once his face wasn't a hard mask of emotionless judgment. He looked calm and at peace. Try as she might, Rin couldn't stop the small smile from finding its way onto her lips. Seeing him sleep like that melting away all of Rin's earlier tension and stress. She realized how tired she was herself, and that she should probably sleep, too. Rin looked out into the living room behind her. She could take the couch, but it really was her bed…but she also didn't want to disturb Sesshomaru. On the other hand…wasn't she trying to convince herself to start pushing back?
Rin sighed. It seemed to no matter what, she always ended up arguing with herself and deciding against whatever revolution she came up with. But that didn't mean she was giving up.
Rin slipped into the bed on the other side, careful not to touch Sesshomaru. She didn't want to know what he would do if he woke up to her invading his personal space in such an 'intimate' way. She had to admit, this probably was the stupidest thing that she could have done, but she didn't care at the time. She only wanted her bed, and she wanted it sooner than later.
She couldn't keep her eyes open long. Soon her eyelids began to droop, feeling as heavy as cinderblocks. Rin soon lost consciousness and fell into a dark, dreamless sleep.
When Rin awoke, her first coherent thought was that her face - and nose especially - was very warm. She groggily blinked open her eyes, confused at how she couldn't see anything but a fuzzy silver color. Slowly, her mind started to piece things together. Whatever her face was pressed into was moving ever so slightly, and a soft, rhythmic sound accompanied the movements. Rin's eyes widened at the realization that she was snuggled up against Sesshomaru's back, with her face buried in his silky hair. She jerked back, nearly falling off the bed in the process. Lazily, Sesshomaru rolled over to face her.
"I was beginning to wonder if you would ever wake up." His voice held its usual chill, but it was much softer, as if he wasn't annoyed or bored for once. Rin just stared and tried to regain her composure. Never had she done something like that before. Yes, she had cuddled before, but not with Sesshomaru, and never in a bed. Her cheeks flamed a deep red color, and she couldn't look directly at the demon.
"Why are you acting like that?" There was the annoyance in his voice again. Rin forced herself to look at him, finding herself becoming easily trapped under his golden gaze. Sesshomaru looked almost…confused. It was certainly a new look for him.
"Well, it…it's just that…" Rin stuttered, unable to get the words out. Sesshomaru let out a long sigh and sat up. He moved with an obvious grace that made clumsy people like Rin furious and boiling over with jealousy. But that didn't stop her from admiring him as he practically glided his way out of the bedroom. Rin felt the heat in her cheeks again, the tingling sensations bringing her back to her senses.
What is wrong with me!? I should have known better to not crawl in beside him earlier…but I also know better than to fall for him ever again. Stupid, stupid, stupid…
Rin continued to mentally assault herself as she went into the small bathroom and brushed her hair. When she stepped into her main living area, she was still maintaining the 'stupid' chant. Her scowl caused Sesshomaru to raise his fine, silver eyebrow at her. It only fueled Rin's fury, for he looked just so incredibly handsome when he did it.
"Just stop." She suddenly spat out at him.
He leaned back, appalled by her unexpected mood change. "Stop what?"
"Stop everything. Stop being you." Sesshomaru was starting to open his mouth to no doubt ask another infuriating question when Rin cut off his chance and continued to pour her frustration out into him. "I'm sick and I'm tired of you. Just you. You following me, you living with me, you making me feel as if I have no control over anything anymore…" Rin paused to rake a shaky hand through her hair. But her mind was still racing to finish, and so she continued.
"Ever since you left, I've been recovering. When you left, you took everything with you. I had become so attached to you, that I didn't know what to do when you were no longer an active part of my life. But…I had finally been getting over you. And that was when you showed up again.
"It's almost like you're just trying to make my life completely miserable for your own entertainment. And I don't know why, since you never seemed to be the type before. I would expect you to just not care about me instead of going out of your way to torture me."
When she was done, Rin looked up at Sesshomaru to see his reaction to all of this. He stared at Rin with a look that she didn't quite recognize at first. It was something that she had never seen before on his face, but it looked somewhat familiar… And it hit like a slap to the face when Rin realized that he pitied her. That the look he was giving her was one of condolence. She opened her mouth to yell at him, to spew awful words towards him, but he beat her to it.
"You just don't understand, Rin." She opened her mouth to protest, but he raised a hand to silence her. "You haven't been thinking clearly enough. I've returned to you because I left something behind the last time." Stepping closer, he very lightly ran a clawed finger over her jaw, causing her to shiver. Rin was too mesmerized and frightened by his intense gaze to move away from him. He leaned in close to her ear and whispered in a low tone.
"I've come back for-"
At that moment, the phone rang.
Rin jumped back, thankful for and guiltily annoyed with the distraction. She quickly picked it up and answered too loudly into the speaker.
"Hello!?" There was a slight pause before the person at the other end started speaking. Rin hunched her shoulders. It was just an automatic message, and probably a scam at that. She put the phone down without another thought and turned back around.
"So what was it that you were saying…?" Sesshomaru was no longer there. Instead, she saw that the window was wide open, letting in the cold breeze. She walked over to close it, and down far below, she could see Sesshomaru's figure walking away.
Rin blankly stared as he made his way out of view. She knew that he was an impatient man, but she was so close to finally hearing him say the words that she was dying to hear. If only that accursed phone hadn't rung at that exact moment…
Will I ever get another chance at the truth, or am I just going to live with this weight forever?
A/N: I'm terribly sorry (actually, no, I'm not sorry. I squealed a bit on the inside) if that last bit was completely unethical and randomly placed. But seriously, I need to move the plot along at some point. And if not now, it'll be even more awkwardly placed. But that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think about the chapter/story in general! *hint hint*
Also, I just really like the idea of Sesshomaru using her window to get in and out of her apartment. XD It amuses me greatly.
