CHAPTER 9

Katherine's Diary: Entry 12

This wasn't smart. I can almost feel how much of a bad idea this is. First of all, my heels are caked in mud. That's a bad sign. Secondly, I just realized that I'm going into this blind. Who knows how much Gavin is hiding?

"We're here," Gavin says. I hear him yank the rope around Damon's neck. Should I get closer? Instead, I just wait outside behind some rocks. Whatever is happening, I can't let them see me.

"Looks like someone beat us to the punch," Damon gasps. I hear him tug on the vervain ropes.

"That's a shame, Damon. Got no use anymore." Wait. What's happening? Is Gavin going to kill him? I bit my lip. I had loved Damon once, and he's still precious to me. But so is my freedom. "Hate to kill you," Gavin growls.

"Ditto," Damon responds. Quick as a whip. That's the Damon Salvatore I know. "You know that pesky hunter's curse and all." Gavin chuckles. God, I really wish I could see what is happening. All I hear is the shuffling of feet. Damon sighs. "All right. How do you want to do this?"

"I'll make it quick and painless."

"Wish I could make the same promise." Next, I hear the burning off flesh, probably Damon trying to pull off the vervain ropes. Gavin cocks his gun.

"I'm going tot kill you," Damon says in his Damon-y voice. "And I'm going to get to that damn cure, and give it to the girl I love." My eyebrows knit together. Right. I forgot. Elena. Fine, I admit it. I'm jealous. But can you blame me? Seriously, I can't believe I lost Damon to that stupid bitch. I mean I'm like 50 times prettier than her!

"You're attachment to your friends will be the end of you," Gavin growls. I suddenly realize the irony behind that. I think I taught Gavin that. Wait. Is it a warning? For me? I'm pretty sure he knows I'm here. Suddenly, I hear someone rush by me. Someone blond. Rocks shift in the cavern below, and I hear a pair of high-heeled boots stomp against the stone floor.

"You don't know my friends," Damon says. Is he smirking? I bet you he's smirking. It's quiet now. "Or my enemies." Is that, is that Rebekah? I groan in frustration. Shit. "We gonna dance," Damon taunts.

"You know he can't hurt me," Rebekah gloats. "Unless he's got the white oak stake."

"Oh he doesn't. But he's got other toys." I hear fighting below, but I stand my ground. I owe nothing to Gavin. Nothing. He's more than capable of handling himself, right? I mean he's got a great trainer. Me!

But wait. Someone else is coming. Two someones. Shit. I think it may be Stefan and Elena. The fighting is still going on below. If I could just sneak by…fast as lightning, I zoom into the cavern and jump down the well. Once, I touch the bottom, I run and hide. Did anybody here me?

There is a shuffling of feet, and the zipping of someone sliding down a rope. Vampires don't need ropes. It's Gavin. I can feel it.

"Come out, come out wherever you are," Gavin whispers under his breath. Still, I hear it, and shivers crawl down my spine. "I know you're here." That's it. I'm not following him anywhere. Gavin's footsteps retreat in the opposite direction, but soon, another set of footsteps comes down the well. Who is it?

Curiosity gets the best of me. I lean over from my hiding spot, and spy…Elena. That bitch!

"Elena," I say. She turns around.

"No!"

Gavin was close. He could feel it. The tingly feeling disappeared from behind his neck, which meant Katherine was long gone. Voices sounded from down the corridor, and he raced towards the sound cautiously. Taking cover behind a rock wall, he listened. It was Jeremy and Bonnie

"Is this it?" Jeremy yelled. "This it the cure?" He looked at Bonnie. "How is this going to cure every vampire in the world?"

"I don't think it is, Jer." Bonnie stepped closer and looked down at the desiccated body beside her. Silas. Jeremy tried to pry open Silas' hands around the cure, but to no prevail.

"Help me." Bonnie strode over to help him, and Gavin chose this moment to make his move. He took a dagger out and stabbed the witch in the back. Bonnie gasped in pain, before being tossed aside.

"Apologies to witch, my boy. But we have to raise Silas. And we have to do it now." Jeremy glared at Gavin and raced the Bonnie's side. Gavin sliced open his hand, letting his blood drip near the mummy's mouth.

"What are you doing?" Jeremy yelled.

"What you should have done before. I'm going to raise Silas," Gavin explained. "Then I'm going to kill him." Jeremy lunged at the hunter, determined to stop him. Gavin put his arm around Jeremy's neck. "You may be confused, Mr. Gilbert, but we're on the same team here." Jeremy elbowed Gavin and Gavin groaned in pain.

"You stabbed my friend!"

"I don't mess around with witches." Gavin sent a few blows with his foot towards Jeremy's stomach.

"You can't use the cure on Silas," Jeremy said angrily. He thought about all the people who needed it. Stefan. Rebekah. His sister.

"It's what it's meant for!" Jeremy threw another punch at the other man, but Gavin quickly blocked it and threw Jeremy on the ground. Jeremy groaned in pain. "What else would you use it for?" Gavin picked up his knife and stood over his fellow hunter. There wasn't enough time. Suddenly, the knife was knocked out of his hand and fangs appeared inches from his throat.

"Hunter's curse," Jeremy croaked at his sister. Elena snorted, then preceded to push Gavin against the rocks. Immediately, it went black.

Katherine's Diary: Entry 13

I help Jeremy up. As long as he thinks I'm Elena, it should be fine. Besides, I need him to help me free Silas. "You okay?" I ask. Jeremy nods, but rushes over to Bonnie's side. Isn't that cute?

"Elena's here," he tells her. "Everything is going to be okay." Jeremy strokes her hand, and a wave of sadness overwhelms me. Somehow, this moment reminds me of Elijah. Would he…approve of what I'm about to do? I push the thought from my mind. I don't have time to make mistakes.

"We did it," Bonnie gurgles. She chokes on blood. If I wasn't in such a hurry, maybe I might have felt sorry for her. For a moment, I'm tempted to give her my blood. A few drops wouldn't hurt, right? But later. I need to get what I came for first.

"Come on, we have to get you up." I put my hand on Jeremy's shoulder, and squeeze it gently. Hopefully, he hasn't realized that I'm not Elena.

"We have to help Bonnie. The hunter stabbed her." I sigh, and pull him up.

"Okay, I just need to know if you're okay first." Right. What I really mean is that I need your blood. What does a woman have to do to get what she wants? I would totally fuck his brains out, but it would be weird because technically, he's Elena's brother. Cousin. Whatever. Again, all just technicalities.

"I'm fine," Jeremy yells. He turns toward Bonnie, and looks at me again. "What are you doing?" I don't move from my spot.

"The cure," I say. "Jeremy, after all we've been though, it's right there." Jeremy cocks an eyebrow at me. That was a mistake. I swallow hardly.

"And it will be there after we help Bonnie." That's it. I'm out of time. Even though I technically could help Bonnie, she would kill me the minute she found out who I really am.

"God, I forgot what an annoying brat you are." Jeremy doesn't even have time to realize what I'm saying. "I'm done playing nice." I slice open the young Gilbert's wrist and hold it over Silas' mouth. "Sorry," I say, smirking. "The family reunion is going to be cut short." Jeremy screams, and a mummified hand clamps over his head. Here's my chance! I grab the cure from the body, ready to spare Jeremy from the rest of his misery. I've got what I needed. Jeremy doesn't need to die, and Silas doesn't need to be raised. A few drops, Sophie and Jane-Anne had warned.

Shit. Footsteps. I take a look at Jeremy, and then run.

"Ow," Rebekah whispers. The arrow sticks out from her back.

"Sorry. Better you than me." Damon tosses Rebekah aside and catches another arrow as it whizzes past his head. Who is that in the distance? Gavin. Hm. Using his vampire speed, he quickly runs up behind and tackles the hunter down. "Just the guy I want to see," he remarks. Then, he loses his smile. "Not really."

Gavin awakens, his hands bound together by ropes. He struggles against them, but soon realizes that it's pointless. A sudden wave of relief passes over him. It's like he had seen the sun for the first time. The hunter's curse had been clouding his mind for months. Now, since Silas was awake, Gavin had felt the control coming back to him. Suddenly, there was a knife against his throat. Gavin looked at the knife, and then back up at Damon.

"Here's the thing," Damon said angrily. "I was completely willing to accept the fact that you were a man on a lonely quest to kill Silas. But then," he paused and growled, "I got boned by my vixen nemesis, Miss Katherine Pierce." Gavin chuckled. So Katherine had survived and taken the cure with her. "And then I started thinking," Damon continued, "that there's no way this is a coincidence." He pressed the knife deeper into the hunter's flesh. "What do you know?" Gavin eyed the knife again, and felt the blade slightly cut into his skin. Rebekah walks up to the two of them. "Took you long enough."

"Sorry," Rebekah said sarcastically. "I had to dig the arrow out of my spine. Thank you for that." She turned to face the hunter.

"If you want a lead on the cure, here's you're guy!" The knife dug even deeper, and a thin line of blood trickled down Gavin's throat.

"Touch me all you want, but you can't kill me. The hunter's curse will torment you forever." Gavin's head swarmed with dizziness.

"He's right. We can't kill him," Rebekah stated. "But that doesn't mean we can't tear him apart piece by piece, limb by limb, until the pain is so severe that your brain shuts it off, to give you one tiny moment of blessed relief." Damon stared at his blond companion. "Then we'll heal you, and then do it all over again, and again, and again."

"You are creepy." Damon shifted his weight, clearly uncomfortable.

"Thank you," Rebekah replied darkly. Damon raised an eyebrow, and Gavin gasped.

"I was tracking tens of vampires across Colorado," he lied. Swallowing, he hoped that the vampires would fall for it. "Katherine found me. She said she could help me find Silas." Rebekah narrowed her eyes, but let him continue. For a moment, Gavin wondered if Rebekah had the same uncanny ability to see through lies, like Elijah. Elijah! It was better not to mention him now. "She already knew about the hunter's mark, and the cure."

"How?" Rebekah demanded.

"She had someone on the inside. A werewolf girl. Friends with your professor." That wasn't a complete lie. In fact, that was the truth. The best lies were sprinkled with some truth.

"Hayley," Damon murmured. "Tyler Lockwood's little friend." He sighed angrily and dug the knife deeper into Gavin's neck. "I knew she was shady! Where'd Katherine find her?"

"New Orleans," Gavin lied again. "That's all I know."

"Good," Damon said. "Just throw him in the well. If he starves to death, it's not our fault." He shrugged, and turned to Rebekah. "Let's go find Bonnie."

"We've got a lead on the cure," the original said. "I suppose you don't mind. You never wanted Elena to be human anyway." Rebekah smirked.

"I wanted the cure because she wanted it," Damon defended. "I want to go back, but I'm not. Because I know what she needs. And what she needs, is her best friend." Damon stalked away, and Gavin threw the blond a smile. She smiled back, before grabbing him. Whatever was going to happen, Gavin knew that he was going to die. His only hope was that the vampires bought his lie, and that Katherine was miles away by now. How could he have been so blind? The hunters curse had clouded his judgment, and he had betrayed his best friend. But now, his guilt proved that Silas was awake and roaming around the island. Although he was glad Katherine had escaped, he wasn't sure how long she could have her freedom when Silas was around.

(break)

"If you're smart, you'll use the cure to kill Silas."

"Killing Silas is you're supernatural destiny. Not mine." Rebekah dropped the hunter onto the ground. Gavin looked around. They were at the bottom of the well. Rebekah turned to leave.

"Oh okay. Well you be careful out there." He motioned around with his head, as he was fully tied up with ropes. "He's out there, wandering about."

"You sure about that?" Rebekah asked warily.

"You don't believe me? Look in my pack." Rebekah hesitated for a moment, before diving into the hunter's backpack. Her brother, Kol, had been afraid for a reason. She reached inside and pulled out a metal mask. "I found it in the tomb where he laid," Gavin explained. "No one's seen him. No one…knows his face." He was trembling with fear, a fear so contagious that suddenly, even Rebekah felt uncomfortable. "How do you hide from the devil, when you don't know what he looks like?!"

Rebekah was gone before the mask hit the ground.

Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

"Hello?" Elijah asked. The phone was silent, except for the gentle sounds of breathing. "Katarina?" he whispered.

"Yea, it's me." More silence. "I got it. I've got the cure." Katherine bit her lip, waiting for Elijah's response. He didn't respond. "Look. Can we meet?" Still more silence. "Willoughby, Pennsylvania. Under the gazebo at 3. Please." She heard Elijah's ragged breathing on the other end, as if he was trying to compose himself. "If you don't want to come, I understand. And I'm not only doing this because I have the cure. I'm doing this for us too." Katherine pressed the end button with her thumb. Hopefully, he would show. Her freedom depended on it.

One of my shorter chapters, I think. But like I said, this was originally part of the previous chapter. So if you like this, please comment/review/follow.
