I could feel myself trying to suppress a smile at Jack's compliment on my find. I just wished the rest of the team had seen it, they might start accepting me more as one of their own.
I followed Toshiko over to her desk, "So could you show me how this whole thing works?"
"It's quite easy; the software does most of the work," she said. "You could probably do this with an easy search on a search engine to be honest. This will give us a nice profile of the guy though. See here he is." A profile of a man came up. He looked slightly middle eastern and on the young side.
"Found him Jack," Toshiko called.
"Let's see, what do we got? Oh, a young one. I like them young, they're so much more apt to change their mind when things get too rough," Jack took a look at the profile, scrolling through his page with Toshiko's mouse. "So, he works for a commercial real estate company. This'll be easy, just send someone in, have them 'looking for a warehouse', get a little buddy-buddy with him and grab the info off his computer when he's not looking."
"So who are we going to send in? He's already seen us three and possibly Ianto at the first murder site," Toshiko said.
"We'll send in Owen. He's young and handsome, if this guy swings that way. If not, they both probably give off that tough man syndrome, they'll get along swimmingly."
"Perfect. Teegan and I can work on making a fake business profile for him. Teegan, have you made a website before?" I nodded my head, "Perfect, this will be easy then. We should have it by the time they get back."
"Great!" Jack was smiling at me. He probably knew I was relived to be contributing something and getting along with Toshiko. He walked back over to his desk and went back to his paper work. Despite the paperwork being interesting last night, I was definitely not envious of him. I much rather be doing what I had learned in school.
"So what kind of business is he going to have?" I asked.
"Oh, I don't know, let's just pick something," Toshiko said.
"Hmmm, he's been kind of moody lately... Let's pick something fun," I said, smiling deviously.
"Let's do some kind of fish packing. He's going to be looking for some kind of warehouse so he can try to get an in with what that group was doing there."
"How about something like... jellied eels?" Toshiko looked at me for a second, then started laughing.
"Jellied eels?" she giggled, "I can just imagine how well that's going to go over with Owen." I raised my eyebrows at her, thinking about how much he had been verbally abusing everyone lately. "Alright, let's do it. Here, I'll set you up on this computer," she indicated a computer on the desk next to hers, "Ianto normally works here, but he's upstairs right now."
She set me up with some software. It was a fairly simple piece of software for rapid website production. All I mostly had to do was fill in the content of the website and pick the colors.
Shortly after we started working Gwen came storming back in, obviously pissed off about something. She went right over to Jack's desk and started talking to him in hushed voices.
I quickly finished with the rest of the website and sent it over to Toshiko's computer. She was adding a few finishing touches just as Owen walked back in. I figured the two must've gotten in a fight. Toshiko was right, he could be really erratic.
Jack got up as soon as Owen walked in, he seemed just as pissed as Owen looked, "Where the hell have you been?" Jack asked as Owen was storming past.
"Walking," Owen replied, curtly.
"Well in you absence, Tosh and Teegan had some great ideas."
"Well, it had to happen sooner or later." I was starting to feel really glad I had picked the jellied eel business for him. He didn't have to take his bad attitude out on Toshiko and I. We had been working really hard.
"Ignore him," Gwen said to us.
"Yeah, just ignore me, Teegan. I can be such a wanker, apparently," Owen said, glancing at Gwen and opening some water.
Ah, so he's the passive aggressive type. I thought. I just held my hands up, trying to back myself out of their fight, even though right now he was kind of acting like a "wanker".
Toshiko just ignored them all, "The van went with the Weevil straight to the warehouse. They must've known it was empty. Either they own it or had previous contact with the estate agents. Like Teegan said, the body that was there was obviously placed there. There wasn't any sign of blood stains on the floor like he had stumbled there."
"Owen Harper, you're going into the property. Toshiko and Teegan have fixed you a cover story." I smiled up menacingly at Owen. Have fun with your jellied eels.
"Hang on, why me?" Owen said.
"Jack, Gwen and Teegan were in the car park and I was in the warehouse. Ianto may have been seen at the first murder scene. If they've got access to CCTV, they'll recognize us," Toshiko informed him.
"We have to get under their guard. find our what's going on," Jack said.
"Yeah, alright. I could do with being someone else right now," Owen said solemnly.
Great, now he's brooding. I wonder if I asked him what's wrong he would tell me, or just get angry.
"Alright, tomorrow Owen, you're going to this guy's place. I want the official autopsy report on my table for those two men by the end of the night. Tosh, Teegan, how's that cover story coming?" Jack asked.
"Great, Teegan's done the website and I'm working on making a video and setting up a fake call center. The website should come up if you search for it. I'm also setting it so it doesn't look like it just went live today." I tried not to look to proud of myself for making the website.
"Great job, guys," Jack said.
"Oh it was really easy. The software Toshiko gave me did all the work. I didn't even have to do any coding," I said, trying not to sound too cocky. Honestly, Jack probably could've done it.
"I think Ianto is ready to help you out upstairs if you want to go up," Jack said, pointing at the ceiling.
I made my way up the elevator to the "tourist office" where Ianto was sitting behind a computer, looking bored. He was wearing his standard three piece suit.
Ianto looked up as I entered through the door, "Ah, Lu- Teegan," he cleared his throat. "Jack informed me of your... predicament," he said in his deep, monotonous voice.
"Yeah..." I said, looking down at the floor. My face was probably beet red, "I suppose everyone has to start somewhere."
"Exactly. Well I picked out a few places in your price range and fairly close to here, so you wouldn't have to worry about getting a car. Cardiff has a fairly decent public transportation system for the days you wouldn't be able to walk. Really, any of these places would work. It's more a matter of your preference. I have them pulled up on the computer," he got up out of his chair and indicated for me to sit.
Ianto had pulled up five different apartments. Three were studios, one was a single bedroom and the other had two bedrooms. I immediately closed the one with the two bedrooms, I didn't have to be reminded how lonely I was here. One of the studios didn't have any windows, so I closed out of that one. The one bedroom was fairly nice. It had a small deck, not even enough for a chair, but enough I could put a potted plant. It also had nice large windows. It was more expensive than the studios, but I figured I really didn't have much else to spend the money on.
"This one looks nice," I said.
"Do you want to go visit it?"
"To be honest, not really. I don't really like studios and the two bedroom is a bit too big for me."
"Alright, I'll set up an appointment with the land lord so you can go over the paperwork. It's a fairly simple process, but I'll go with you to make sure he doesn't swindle you out of any money. I can pose as your brother or gay best friend or something." I smiled at that.
"I doubt they'll even ask. It'll probably be suspicious if my brother has an English accent and I don't. Of course, I could always pull my best english accent," I said the last sentence with my best british accent.
Ianto laughed a bit, "Or I could do my best American accent," he said, attempting to speak with an American accent. We both cracked up laughing again.
Owen walked through the door then, "Har, har har. I'm glad you two are having a jolly good time up here. Meanwhile, I'm downstairs cutting up dead bodies, but don't mind me." With that, he went out the front door.
"What happened to him Ianto? Toshiko mentioned something about Diane. I mean, I don't want to stick my nose where it doesn't belong, but I also don't want to tread on his toes by accident," I said.
"We had a plane of travellers come in. They fell through the rift," Ianto said, "there were three of them. They were from the 1950's. Because the rift is so erratic, we couldn't send them back. One left for London to make her own life. Diane was a traveller, she couldn't sit still, so she took off in her plane again, but not before Owen had fallen in love with her. The thing about Owen is he doesn't get in relationships. He's very... erratic. Owen is still trying to cope with it."
"And the third one that came through?" I asked. It explained why Owen was so down. This Diane had left him here. It just seemed to me he was dwelling on it a bit too much. I felt like there was still something more to it, but I wouldn't push.
"He couldn't handle the change. He committed suicide..." Ianto trailed off, his eyes not quite looking at anything in particular. "But what's passed has passed. Let's go back down to the Hub and see if Jack needs anything before I head out for the night."
We passed Gwen on our way back down to the main Hub. Toshiko had left through platform. Jack was still there, sitting at his desk with the endless stack of papers.
"Find a suitable flat?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, Ianto's a life saver. Soon, I won't be living at my job anymore," I said.
"Tell me about it," Jack said, smiling. "Seems like everything is coming together. I don't like it. That's normally when everything blows up. Anyway, you should probably go get some dinner and rest, Teegan. I have a feeling tomorrow's gonna be busy."
"Alright, I think I'm going to go to that Indian place, wanna come?" I asked them both.
"I actually have some papers I need Ianto to fill out before he leaves for the night, so it'd probably be best if you went alone."
"I could wait..." I really didn't want to eat alone.
"It might take a while, probably best if you go now," Jack said raising his eyebrows.
I humphed and went out the street slab by myself. What was that all about? I wondered. We did a bunch of paperwork last night and from what I gathered, we weren't that busy. How could there be so much paperwork?
My dinner was quite good, it helped offset that fact I had to eat it alone. Mood lightened, I decided to go for a walk along the waterfront afterward. The sun had set while I was eating, so it was quite chilly out by now. I pulled my new jacket around me closer.
It was still hard to believe a month ago, my life had been completely different. I wondered what my family was doing right now. Probably still searching for me, hoping I would walk through the door any moment. My phone weighed heavy in my pocket.
I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. Stop, I promised I wouldn't cry anymore This job was going to help me. Maybe once the Doctor came back, he could help me sort things out and I could see my family again.
I looked around me. I had walked out on one of the larger piers. It was made out of concrete and was set lower than the promenade. A few boats were tied to the pier, bobbing up and down in the frigid winter waters. There was no one else on the pier besides myself, it was quite peaceful.
By the time I started walking back, the half moon was high in the sky. There were no stars, the city was too bright. I checked my phone, Jack had texted me, wondering if everything was alright. That was a half hour ago. Damn, he probably thinks I'm running away.
I made sure to text him back, letting him know I was alright. I was walking along the promenade again. No one was out here either. It was probably too cold for people to go out on work night.
I was just about to press send when my phone was suddenly snatched out of my hand. The person that snatched it was sprinting as fast as he could ahead of me.
"Hey!" I called. I sighed and looked around. No one in sight, probably still not a good idea to leap. Instead, I ran to catch up to the man. "You might not want t do that!" I called.
I was quickly closing the gap between us. This device really came in handy sometimes. I would've never been able to run this fast before. The guy looked behind him, his eyes widening as he saw me getting close. I just smiled and ran faster. I felt like a lion, ready to catch its prey.
It took me less than a block to catch up, I grabbed the back of his jacket when I was at arms length, ready to strike him. The man twisted around and pushed me in the gut, my cell phone still in his hand. He stopped running and turned to face me. His eyes widened when he turned around.
"You might want to give this lady back her phone before she shows you what she can really do," a voice said from behind me. I immediately recognized it as Jack's voice.
I put my hands on my hip, trying to look menacing. It apparently worked because the guy dropped my phone and ran. I sighed with relief and went to go pick up my phone from the ground.
As I bent down, red drops fell onto my phone screen and I became aware that my abdomen was throbbing where the man had pushed me.
When I stood back up, I saw the knife handle sticking out of my stomach, right above where my appendix was. "Shit," I said.
"What, did the screen crack? We can always get you a new- " Jack stopped as I turned to face him.
I looked up at him, not knowing what to do. My adrenaline was still rushing through me, newly refreshed realizing I had been stabbed.
Jack had his phone out as he was striding up to me, "Owen? No we didn't have another fucking Weevil attack. Shut up and get your ass back to the Hub. It's Teegan, she had a bit of a run in with Cardiff criminal life," Jack paused a second. "I don't know! We can't take her to the hospital." He ended the phone call.
I just stood there in shock still. I was aware my hands had started shaking and I was closer to the ground at this point. I was on my knees and Jack was now kneeling beside me.
"And this is why we don't walk around Cardiff by ourselves at night. Can you stand?" He asked, hand under my armpit ready to help me up. I nodded and pressed my hand to the wound around the knife. It came away sticky with blood. Jack tore off the bottom of his undershirt and told me to keep it pressed as best I could around the knife.
Luckily we weren't that far from the tourist entrance to the Hub. Jack was bracing me around my waist and helping me walk. We were about halfway there when I finally started feeling the blood loss. I still had my hand pressed to the wound, surprisingly, the blood hadn't completely soaked through the cloth Jack had given me.
"Jack... I just need to sit a second..." I said, trying lean against the wall leading to the office.
"No you dont, come on, Owen's going to patch you up," Jack lifted me up, careful not to jar the knife. "Keep pressure on that or you're going to keep losing blood."
Jack took me down to medical room and set me on the table. The room started to spin when Jack took the cloth I had been pressing on the wound. Pain was starting to set in as the throbbing became more intense.
I was aware that Jack was starting to cut my shirt up around the knife with scissors. "Hey, this is a new shirt!" I said and then realized talking was just going to make it hurt worse.
"Yeah, well you can sell the knife and buy a new one. Ah, there's our medic."
I could hear the sound of the hydraulic machine that worked the cement slab working. A few seconds later, Owen came running down the set of steps to the medical area.
"You know, I was in the middle of having a beer. Alright, what do we have?" I could hear him tapping on something, followed by a few beeps. "Stab wound to the abdomen, knife is about three and a half inches in. Alright, I'm going to give you some morphine." I couldn't even feel the needle, the pain from the knife was starting to reach blinding levels. I felt him put something around my arm and then a machine started beeping in time to my heart rate.
The wall in front of me lit up, showing what I guessed was a cross section of my abdomen with the knife in it. It was a lot more detailed than anything in a hospital would've shown.
"Ok Jack, hold her shoulders down, I going to remove the knife. Deep breath ok?" I just nodded and grabbed Jack's hand that was now holding down my shoulders. I could feel the morphine starting to work its way through my body. My limbs felt heavy. "1, 2, 3.."
On three he pulled the knife out and suddenly the room went black.
I woke up sometime later in the room I had been staying in while at Torchwood. I could hear voices on the other side of the room.
"...gone. Probably why she hadn't passed out from blood loss," the voice speaking was Owen's. He sounded a bit confused.
"You're sure?" that voice was Jack.
"I mean remember when she first came in? You said she should've been dead," Gwen was the one speaking now. "She had broken bones and everything. A week later..." she just trailed off. "Do you think there's something she's not telling us?"
"Why don't you ask her?" Jack said. I could hear footsteps coming over to my bed. I forced my eyes open. Every muscle in my body felt heavy and tired. Surprisingly, my stomach didn't hurt at all. It was, however grumbling for food.
Owen was holding a bunch of papers attached to a clip board. He put the clipboard down and started pushing on my abdomen. There was no pain Gwen was behind him. Jack moved to the other side of my bed.
"What did I do now?" I asked. Whatever it was, I had a feeling it had to do my the thing on my back.
"Either I'm the best doctor that's ever lived," Owen said, "or your alien mumbo jumbo gave you super healing powers. I mean we kind of already knew that, but I wasn't expecting to see it again so soon. We kind of figured it was a one time deal with how much you had been banged up before. Any pain?"
"No...So what? Am I immortal or something?"
"We don't know. You healed up really fast. Two and a half hours and an almost four inch stab wound. Completely stitched itself up. It could just be if you can heal faster than you can die, you're alright. I wouldn't go jumping off anymore buildings or getting shot. It could be that you only have a set amount you can heal before whatever is on your back has to be recharge. We really don't know."
"How long was I out for?"
"It's morning time now, so you might want to go get dressed. Owen," Jack said, "you still have that appointment with Mr. Lynch, so go get ready. The way I see it, you're alright, so no skipping work for you today," he said, pointing at me.
After everyone left the room, I lifted up the hospital gown that had been put on me. All my other clothes except my underwear were gone. My face turned red, I didn't want to think about Owen or Jack seeing any of my lady parts or chest.
True to what Owen said, the wound had completely healed, there wasn't even a scar. When I walked back up to the main part of the Hub, I discovered Ianto had brought in more muffins. I quickly devoured one. As I was scarfing down the second, I heard Toshiko say, "Someone's hungry."
I could feel my face turn red and I started slowing down my munching. I couldn't help it, I was really hungry.
Owen walked up behind me, holding a clipboard. "You know, you're metabolism did spike really high last night. I'm guessing you're really hungry this morning?" He was now wearing a business suit.
I just nodded my head as I took another bite of the muffin. "Interesting... Do you feel any effects when you use any of your other abilities?"
"Not that I noticed. But I mean, healing myself would probably take a lot more energy than the other things. Not only that, but it's a conscious effort when I do the other things. Last night, it's not like I was trying to heal myself," I said. Jumping or changing my eye sight was really no different than jumping regularly or blinking.
"Right, so it's an involuntary response, like breathing." Owen scribbled something down. "I'll make note of this for later. We're going to have to start doing some more intensive tests once everything calms down. Although it probably won't with the rift back up Tosh was talking about. We really need to start understanding this before things get bad or you transform into some alien robot or something."
"I don't think I'd mind being a Transformer..." I joked.
"Oh, so is that Owen's diagnosis?" Jack asked, joining us in the lounge. "Looking sharp, Owen. Try not to make the ladies swoon too much," he winked at Owen.
"I'll be off then before I get Jack too excited. Wish me luck."
"Remember," Tosh said, walking over, "just plug in the usb I gave you and I'll be able to see everything. Don't let him see you or he might start looking for tracking software on his computer."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You gave me the whole run down already," Owen sighed.
"Good luck," Toshiko smiled at him.
After Owen left, Toshiko called me over to her computer. "With this program, we'll be able to see everything that goes on in the Lynch database once Owen get the usb plugged in. Here," she gave me a ear piece, "We'll also be able to hear everything Owen does. This way, we can double check anything this Mark Lynch says to Owen. You can sit at Ianto's table again today. I'm working on getting you're own computer set up."
"Thanks!" I said. She definitely seemed to be taking to me a lot more now that she knew I was good with computers. She seemed way out of my league though in terms of knowledge. If I was good at computers, then she was a genius. It was like I could scribble stick figures on paper while she was painting the Mona Lisa.
About and hour later we heard Owen start talking to someone, I assumed it was this Mark Lynch fellow. After exchanging a few pleasantries, they got down to business and Owen propositioned him for some warehouses. Suddenly, something popped up on my computer.
"We're in!" Toshiko exclaimed. "This'll give ys everything on the hard drive, including encrypted files."Jack walked over now to look at Toshiko's computer. "If I can establish a routing protocol, whatever he does on this computer from now on, we'll know about it." After a few minutes, Toshiko said, "Owen, you're clear."
Owen was prodding the man for the warehouses we had found the body in. Apparently, they were already under contract. Toshiko told him he was lying. After Owen said goodbye, Toshiko cracked her knuckles and looked over to me.
"Now's when the fun begins. First, he'll go for the weblink at the top of the page. Then he'll want to know what other people say about the business," I could see everything that was popping up on Mark Lynch's computer on a window in mine. "Now he'll see what Owen has to say about himself."
The phone next to Toshiko rang, "Harper's sales. Jenny Long speaking," she paused a minute, then smiled. "Job, done." She looked quite pleased with herself.
Ianto walked up to Jack, "I've found another set of suspicious injuries at the hospital. They sound pretty bad."
"Tosh, stay here and monitor Mark Lynch;s movements. Ianto, Teegan, with me," Jack said.
"I'll come with you," Gwen offered.
"Go home," Jack told her.
"But..."
"It's not a request. Remember, don't let it drift." Jack said. I looked at Toshiko, but she just shrugged.
I grabbed my coat and headed out the tourist exit with Jack and Ianto. "Were the obviously Weevil markings?" I asked.
"Either that or there's a bear on the loose in Cardiff," Ianto said.
When we got in the hospital, Jack flashed a badge and told the attendee it was official police business.
"But they already came 'round," the girl said in a heavy Welsh accent.
"Special forces," Jack flashed a smile.
The attendee gave us a room number. The room actually turned out to be a bed labelled with a number with a curtain that could be pulled around. There were a number of people filling the beds surrounding and hospital equipment beeping everywhere. It almost seemed medieval next to the equipment Owen used on me.
"Teegan, I want you to stand outside the curtain, make sure no one strange comes around."
Ianto pulled the curtain back. I could hear the exchange from where I was standing.
"I've already made my statement to the police," the man said, very defensive already.
"According to your chart, you nearly had your heart torn from your ribcage," Jack countered.
"Ohhh," I heard Ianto say.
"Ten-hour operation to repair the chest wounds."
"Why should I talk to you?" the man asked.
"Let me tell you what did this to you," Jack continued, undeterred. "Six feet high, teeth like a shark, rippled skin and the rage of a wild animal. Am I close?"
"I was mugged," the man insisted. "There was three of them, they had knives."
I could almost laugh, there was no way a mugging nearly tore the man's heart out.
"So why were your wounds described by paramedics as bite marks?" Ianto asked.
"Look, I can't help it if they got mixed up. They're overworked," the man was coming up with excuses left and right.
"There are lots of ways I can get you to talk," Jack was losing his patience, "but the easiest would be if you consider the consequences should you not tell me the truth. And that is, this creature will attack again. Somebody will die. And it will be on your conscience." Jack paused. "Now tell us the truth."
I had to lean in to hear the next part. The hospital was deserted as far as I could see, no one was coming. "I can't, they'd kill me," the man whispered.
"Who'd kill you?"
"Everyone."
Jack sighed and ripped back the curtain. I jumped back, startled.
"Let's go. There's nothing else we can get from him." Jack stormed down the hall.
