Hello, long time no see :)
I got a prompt from a tumblr user disneyprincessgleek: "Could I possibly prompt (if you're still doing them) maybe a futurefic for this story? Like their wedding, or maybe if they got kids, etc" and I thought why not, I love this 'verse so it would be fun to revisit it. So, after some thinking, here's what I think happened to Klaine.
Enjoy!
"I can't believe this is happening," Blaine said wiping his tears.
The day had been eventful and emotional for him and Kurt and now when they were finally back home Blaine let himself fall onto the bed and try to process what had happened. In the morning he was still technically a slave and now he was a free man. He rubbed his itchy right wrist earning himself a disapproving look from his boyfriend.
"Stop that. The tattoo artist said to touch your wrist as little as possible. You are going to irritate the skin otherwise," he scolded him and sat down on the edge of the bed and took a hold of Blaine's left hand to prevent him from scratching.
"I still remember how I felt when the tattoo was made," Blaine said resting his right hand on his stomach. "It feels exactly the same now but different, you know? Physically it's same but I also feel lighter? I know it makes no sense…"
Kurt sighed looking lovingly at him. "It actually does. When you were marked as a slave a heavy weight was put on your shoulders and now it has been lifted. Of course it feels different."
"Think of all the possibilities… I can finally get a real job. We can go back to the States to see our families and friends. We could get married and have kids… I mean, if you want to. I'm not saying–"
"Is this what you want?" Kurt cut him off. "To have a family with me?"
Blaine nodded shortly, finding difficult to form the words he had been dreading to voice for many years. "There is nothing I want more than that."
Kurt's eyes filled with tears as he leaned down and kissed his boyfriend. "We will. One day I will get down on one knee and ask you to be my husband."
"Hm, I'm an impatient man, I might ask you first," Blaine stuck his tongue out playfully. Kurt used such a perfect opportunity and sucked his tongue into his mouth. "Hey, it's unfair," Blaine laughed and pulled Kurt on top of him. "I'm trying to have a serious conversation here."
"Okay, serious, let's converse," Kurt laughed and rested his weight on his elbows.
"When you say 'family' do you see us with kids? Because I do. We have been together for seven years and I've been dreaming about having kids with you for half of this time."
"Then we are on the same page," Kurt said and sat up straddling Blaine. "I want two kids. Maybe we could use a surrogate and have one kid each? One tiny Blaine and one tiny Kurt."
"Or we could adopt?" Blaine suggested weakly. "It doesn't matter for me. We can have biological kids if you want."
"Would you rather adopt?"
"Yeah, I guess. I mean, there are enough lonely kids out there. We could give them a nice home with loving parents."
"Agreed then," Kurt beamed. "We will get engaged, then have a wedding, and adopt two adorable little babies. Two or three years apart, we'll see how it goes with the first one."
"Sounds like a plan," Blaine smiled at him. "I might be repeating myself but I can't believe this is happening!"
Getting his slave mark removed was not enough for Blaine to be seen as a free man internationally but as soon as his American citizenship was revoked he could no longer fear of being considered a slave. As soon as he was officially free they booked two plane tickets to the States and let everyone know that they were coming for a visit.
Blaine, who had been managing the account set up by Cassandra and Burt for him, spent a great deal on an engagement ring for Kurt. Now that he was a free man they could finally get married and Blaine knew a perfect place for proposal.
Not having travelled for a long time Blaine had almost forgotten how uncomfortable plane seats were and how long transatlantic flights took. It all paid off as soon as they saw Burt, Cassandra, and Cooper waiting for them in the airport. They hadn't seen each other for over a year since the previous Christmas and so they fell into each other's arms with tears running freely down their faces. Cooper was the only one who didn't get teary-eyed as he was too distracted by big suitcases, knowing that they held some presents for him.
They spent a couple of days in Columbus with Cassandra, Burt staying for the weekend but unfortunately he had to go back to work on Monday. It would have been upsetting if they hadn't had a busy week planned, a meet up with their old friends being the highlight of it all.
It was a blast in the end. Being able to finally hug each other was much more than what hours of skype chats could give. Blaine almost proposed that night, both of them high on happiness but in the end it didn't feel right. At least not after a couple of drinks.
"What if we didn't adopt?" Kurt asked one night as they lay in Cassandra's guest room, Blaine resting his head on his chest.
"You don't want kids anymore?" Blaine tried to ask lightly but his voice still wavered.
"I do–"
"Oh, so it's surrogate then?"
"No," Kurt slowly, looking at the ceiling, his right hand playing with Blaine's hair lazily. "What if we… buy a kid?"
Blaine raised himself on his elbow and looked at Kurt confused. "What do you mean?"
"A slave… what if we buy a slave kid?" he asked finally looking up at his boyfriend, trying to read his expression. "If we adopt we would save a child from orphanage. But, if we buy him or her from a slave trading centre, we would be saving them from much worse."
"Kurt, I…" Blaine whispered and pressed their lips together for a short kiss. "I love you so much."
"So that's a yes?" Kurt asked uncertainly.
"Yes, it would be… perfect," Blaine said smiling widely at him.
"Let's do it tomorrow."
"What?"
"Tomorrow. I saw a poster–"
"A poster?"
"About a sale. The trading centre here is selling some discounted slaves who haven't been bought for a while. We can go there tomorrow and buy a kid. It would take less time than taking care of adoption papers anyway."
"Whoa, Kurt, stop right here," Blaine shook his head laughing, not able to comprehend what his boyfriend was saying. "What happened to the whole proposal-wedding-adoption plan?"
"I don't know, maybe it's because I've been spending time with Cooper and I want a kid of our own to raise? And when I saw that poster I couldn't help but think of all kids that are there, dreading for what is going to happen to them. Maybe right this moment there is a little girl crying herself to sleep there and she could be here with us tomorrow, loved and taken care of."
"We can't just buy us a daughter tomorrow. We need to… prepare…"
"How?"
"I don't know, buy stuff?"
"We don't even know if we are getting a boy or a girl…"
"Kurt…"
"I thought of you as well. How scared you must have been when you were in that centre, waiting to be bought."
"Fuck, Kurt."
"I'm sorry," Kurt said trying to blink his tears away. "You are right, it would be insane to do it tomorrow. I don't know what's gotten into me."
"I do," Blaine said softly. "We have been away from slavery for years and now we are here and you are obviously drowning in it, trying to save yet another soul. And I absolutely love the idea of buying a slave child but it can't be spontaneous. It wouldn't be fair to either us or the kid."
"You are right. You are always right."
Blaine didn't propose on that trip. He didn't even notice how quickly the days passed and nearing the end of their stay Kurt became rather moody. For a perfect proposal Blaine needed him in a good mood but no matter how much he tried nothing helped. He didn't even need to ask what was bothering him. His boyfriend always took goodbyes rather hard and the anticipation of separating from their families yet again stopped him from enjoying their time together.
It was Kurt who proposed in the end. He went with a cheesy proposal and got on one knee on the top of the Eiffel tower on the Valentine's Day and asked Blaine to be his life partner. Ignoring several other couples doing the exact same thing they wrapped each other in their own bubble of happiness.
It took them over half a year until their next trip to the States. It was a shorter one this time and its main goal was to extend their little family. They had been too anxious ever since Kurt's idea about buying a slave and even though they were still fiancés and not husbands, they couldn't wait any longer. They were going to fly back to France as parents.
The night before going to the trading centre Blaine couldn't fall asleep. Half of him dreaded going to the centre where he had spent too much time for his liking. No matter how much he tried to convince himself he had left it all behind, he didn't know how he would feel visiting that place again. Another half of him felt excited about the possibility of becoming a parent in just a few hours. He had a good feeling about it.
Morning dawned too soon and not soon enough. Cassandra and Burt wished them luck and offered to accompany them but the boys declined. As much as they appreciated their family's support they wanted it to be just them. After Cooper reminded them to get him a 'cool' cousin they left alone.
The drive to the slave trading centre was mostly silent until they reached the building and Kurt parked the car. "Are you still sure about this?" he asked.
"We don't have to get anyone. We can just look around and if we don't feel a pull towards any child we can leave," Blaine shrugged.
"Blaine, I know you and I know me. There is no way we are getting out of there alone."
"I know," he sighed. "I think I'm ready. No, I know I'm ready. It's still a little scary though."
"You will be a great father, Blaine," Kurt said reaching out for his hand.
"So will you, Kurt. Now before we change our minds, let's go pick a future Hummel," Blaine said as he braved to leave the car.
The centre was almost empty at the early hour except for a few early birds who wanted the biggest selection. As they entered the display room the boys gasped in horror. Neither had been at such place as Kurt had never bought a slave before and Blaine had been bought right away after he was up for sale online.
The display room was depressing, large grey space filled with countless cages. At first Kurt didn't understand why they were there until they walked passed one of them and noticed what was inside.
"Holy shhh…" his eyes widened and he grabbed Blaine's hand for support. "I've heard the stories but this…"
"Hello, gentlemen, how can I help you?" a male employee walked over to them smiling as if they were at a grocery shop, not a slave trading centre.
"We are looking around…" Kurt mumbled, feeling intimidated by the man, not able to take his eyes away from the people in cages.
"Something specific?" the man asked politely.
"Someone not older than five maybe?" Blaine said uncertainly, looking at Kurt for help. "We are looking for a kid."
The man looked at them in disgust. "Follow me. We don't have many kids right now. Most are older than thirteen, better business. We do have one female slave, six years old, so close enough your range. Feisty. Likes biting too much. Doesn't respond to training well. Cheap though. Here it is," the man said as he stopped by one small cage.
Blaine squatted down and only then saw a young girl sitting in the middle of the cage playing with her fingers as if they were toys.
"Hi," he said to her and Kurt ducked as well.
"Hi," the girl said and continued playing, ignoring them completely.
"My name is Blaine–"
"I don't care," the girl responded not allowing him to finish. "And my friends don't care. So you can go now. We are busy."
"What are you playing?" Kurt asked watching the girl curiously.
"I'm talking to my dead parents," she said smirking deviously. "This is my dad," she said pointing at one finger, "and this is my mom."
"Creepy little fuck," the centre employee said. "I'll be around," he said and left them alone.
"Don't want to be bought, huh?" Blaine said smiling at the girl and sat down on the ground aware of what the girl was doing. "I hated it here but it was still better than being bought by someone I didn't know."
"You were here?" the girl's attention went to Blaine and her eyes immediately fell on his wrists.
Blaine nodded and extended his right hand for her, exposing his wrist. "I used to have the slave mark here."
The girl came closer to the bars and looked at his wrist. She gingerly touched his skin.
"We aren't looking for a slave," Kurt assured her. "We want someone we could call our daughter. Or son. Would you like to be part of our family?"
The girl's demeanour instantly went back to what they had seen in the beginning. "No," she said and retreated to the furthest corner of the cage.
Kurt looked at Blaine apologetically knowing he had just blown their chance with this little girl. "What if we told you more about us?" he refused to give up.
"No."
"We live in Europe. Paris to be exact," Kurt explained. "There is no slavery in Europe, you know?"
"I don't care," the girl shook her head and started playing with her fingers again.
"Emily?" a soft male voice came from several cages away from them. "You hear me?"
"Yes," she responded quickly, coming closer to where the voice was coming from.
"You should go with them," the boy said. Blaine looked over to see a teenager, not older than fourteen year old, sitting a few cages away from them. "They look nice."
"No! I'm not leaving you here!" the girl, Emily, stated loudly and crossed her arms over her chest. "They can't make me."
"They can," the boy said. "It's better if you go calmly. Just like mom and dad always taught you, be a good girl."
"No! I'm crazy," she said looking at the pair, "I see ghosts. I talk to our dead parents. You don't want me. Go find someone normal."
"Hey, you done here?" the employee came back.
The boys stood up and took the last look at the girl. "We need to talk first," Blaine said. "We would like to see her documents."
"I don't want to be bought!" Emily's scream followed his words.
"Follow me," the man almost bowed to them and walked to the front desk. He told the girl sitting there to dig out the papers and once he got them he gave them to the couple. "It's healthy and all, the only problem is her attitude. Difficult to train but not impossible."
"Is that the only reason she hasn't been bought yet?" Kurt said flipping through the papers, not really reading anything.
"Indeed. But if you buy it, it should be easy to break it. It's the brother that causes the trouble. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Once it forgets its family it should be fine."
"That boy…" Blaine began slowly. "He's up for sale, right?"
The man nodded.
"He's a teenager. I thought there was the highest demand for teenagers."
"Cripple. Came to us blind so nobody wants it," the man shrugged. "So, you want the female one or not?"
"Give us a moment," Kurt said and dragged Blaine further from the workers of the centre seeking some privacy. "Blaine…"
"Yes," was the response he got.
"You don't know what I was going to say."
"I know. You want us to buy them both," Blaine said unfazed. "And my answer is yes."
"We can afford it but raising two kids is going to be hard…"
"Yet worth it. Think about it, someone else might not care that they are family. They will be separated for life and we can give them both a home. I know we only planned one child and definitely not a teenager but we can do it. We can raise two kids and love them both even though they are older than we planned."
"Maybe we could take the boy to a doctor and get his eyes tested. He could see again."
"And if not we will help him any way we can. We are their best chance. They might not like us right now, we didn't have the best start but… I like the girl's strong spirit and the boy seems to really care for his sister. I like them already and maybe they will grow to like us too," Blaine added.
"It's decided, we will soon be parents of two. Let's do it," Kurt smiled at him and then went back to the front desk. "How much for the girl and her brother?"
"You want both?" the man looked suspiciously at them. They nodded eagerly. "Freaking finally. I'll give you a nice discount. Those two have been driving me crazy."
They settled the payment which ended up being just a few thousands of dollars more than they had planned, the price that would have normally been paid for one proper adult slave.
As soon as the girl saw them coming back she visibly stiffened and watched in horror as the man unlocked her cage.
"No, no, no! You can't take me! Robbie, tell them they can't take me!" she started yelling, trying to get away from the man, which was difficult to do in the small cage.
"It's okay, it's okay, mommy and daddy are watching over us," the boy said quickly. "You will be fine and so will I. Everything will be fine. Calm down."
"No, I'm not calming down!" Emily shouted and after a yelp from the man who was holding her Blaine saw her running towards the boy's cage.
He beat the man to it and stood between them, not letting the angry man get to her. "Don't touch her," he spat, anger and need to protect his new family bubbling inside of him.
"Whatever, it's yours now," the man said and stepped back inspecting his hand.
"I don't want to go. Mommy and daddy left us but I won't leave you, Robbie," Emily full on cried grabbing her brother's hands through the bars.
"Shh, don't cry," the boy forced a smile. "We will meet again, I promise."
"And sooner than you think," Kurt said softly, squatting to the kids' level. "You are both coming with us."
"Really?" the kids asked in unison.
"Really," Blaine confirmed his fiancé's words and gestured for the man to open the cage. "We don't want to separate you two."
"I can't see and neither I nor Emily are obedient slaves," the boy said narrowing his unseeing eyes. "What's your angle?"
"We don't want slaves, we want kids," Blaine said and guided the boy out of the cage. "I know you don't trust us now but we will work to earn your trust."
"Okay, I like you now," Emily said taking her brother's hand as soon as he was out of the cage. "Will I get my own room?"
Blaine laughed and put Robbie's hand on his shoulder. "You will both get your own rooms."
"In France?" the girl asked.
"Yes, in France," Kurt said and felt her hand slipping into his.
"Will it be next to Robbie's room?"
"Definitely."
"Okay."
"She is a handful sometimes," the boy said when Kurt and Emily skipped to the car, the girl not able to contain herself as soon as she was outside.
"I'm glad she is," Blaine said watching Kurt and the girl fondly. "When we decided to… adopt a slave instead of someone from the orphanage we knew we shouldn't expect someone…"
"Normal?" Robbie offered.
"Not the word I was looking for," Blaine said. "Stop, there are three steps in front of us."
"Down?"
"Yes," Blaine said and they slowly descended the stairs. "I thought we would find someone like me here. After the training I was a mess. They put me into the slave mind-set easily so when my brother bought me it took a while for me to get better. And you with Emily… You don't seem as affected."
"We give each other strength," the boy explained. "How long have you been a slave?"
"A while… But I have been a free man for almost a year now."
"How?"
"Kurt, my fiancé. He's… he took me in and moved us to France so I would have a chance at normal life."
"Robbie, you can go faster, there is nothing in your way," Emily ran up to them and started dragging the boy. "Kurt says their nephew is waiting for us and he has some awesome toys so we need to hurry. I miss real toys."
"Okay, I'm sorry," Robbie smiled and quickened his pace with Blaine carefully watching his way.
"Cooper called. He can't wait to meet the kids. He's very excited we are bringing two friends for him instead of one," Kurt explained with a smile.
As Kurt helped the boy into the car Blaine looked back at the building that held helpless people in cages waiting to be bought and used. He remembered the time he spent there, scared and abused. He wished he could go back in time and tell his younger self that everything was going to be okay. He turned around and smile at his future husband.
Here he was, several years later, with a beautiful man he could call his and two kids that might never see them as parents but hopefully will love them nevertheless. It wasn't a life he would have chosen for himself back when he was in high school but right now he couldn't dream of anything better.
AN: Thank you for reading. Always a pleasure to read your reviews so don't be shy :)
