It was not difficult for Jill, Chris and Quint to discover which way they should go. Later, in a small entrance among the rocks, a slight brightness could be noticed.
As they were walking towards that place, Jill realized that her head was once again heavy and she felt her arms tingle. Everyone was very tired and although Jill had thought about suggesting to stop for a while to rest, her wish to end that all was even bigger. Chris and Quint also seemed convinced to end that once and for all.
"I'm glad we had enough time to figure out that his weakness was his eyes." Chris said about that creature as they were walking forward.
"For that friendly resident we could say that what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over." Quint said just before they reached a large area.
The rocks surrounding the place were with patches of mud that looked like sinister drawings and forms. A small light was reflected from a single rock in the back of that place, above a kind of altar, where it was possible to see, even from a distance, the book desired by Wesker. Around that precious object, several bowls filled with some liquid that was not possible to identify at the distance.
"Jill, do you think there is some trap in there?" Chris asked before turning to her and getting worried about what he had seen. Jill had not entered the place with them, she stood outside leaning against the rock in the entrance and she looked pale and breathless. "Jill?" He said, moving towards her.
"I cannot enter this place. Looks like a cell..."
"But Jill, it looks like a cave. There are no railings like jails."
"You not only see them, but this place is a jail of souls. I can feel their desperation, hear their screams and see the pleading hands. Get the book and we should get out of this place now."
Chris helped her sit on the floor and nodded in a confirmation gesture. He took the backpack that the Quint handed him, leaving it with Jill.
While Chris and Quint walked towards the altar holding their swords, Jill could see some pleading souls throwing themselves at their feet as if they asked for help, for mercy. Fortunately the guys could not see that scene.
Chris thoroughly inspected the altar for a few minutes, nothing seemed more abnormal than the book itself and those glasses, which led him to believe that there was nothing to do but to withdraw the book. Once he made it, the entrance to that space where Jill was sitting by began to close and before she was crushed by a rock, she rolled to the outside.
"Jill?" Chris yelled before turning to Quint "Damn it! If we put the book, it will open again. But how do we find something of the same weight? Some stones?"
"Wait" Quint said when he saw Chris bend down "We will replace the weight of the book by the bowls. Let's place them and see what happens."
When there were only two remaining bowls around the altar, the rock blocking the entrance began to move again. Holding the book, Chris looked at Quint and nodded, before walking out of there. At that time the mission did not matter more than knowing if she was OK.
Jill was lying on the floor and she seemed still very weak. Chris took her in his arms and did not ask anything, just stared at her intently as he waited Quint to reach them.
But before Quint could pass through the entrance, the rock moved again, getting the guard stuck in that spiritual prison. Somewhere not far away from that place it was possible to hear more noises from some rocks moving, leaving them worried about some passage that could be closed by that moment, preventing them from leaving that place.
"Thanks, but you can get me down, Chris. I'm starting to feel better." She said.
"What about Quint?" Chris asked as he did what she had asked him to. "Can't we find something in the book to get him out of there?"
Jill shook her head while analyzing the rocks that closed the entrance leaving the guard behind.
"We cannot help him, there is nothing here. And the book..." Jill sighed "can't be opened. By my interpretations there are many dangerous energies in it and we may not know how to deal with them."
"Well. we worry about the guard later. Now we need to look for the exit before it is also blocked." He grabbed the backpack and followed her.
They walked for a few meters and realized that they could not go back to where they had entered. But they both saw a different and unexplored path on their right.
Without any other choice, Jill and Chris stopped for a few minutes to light up the torch and went through that dark passage. After walking fifty yards they managed to see part of the sky in a high slit. They realized that they had reached a possible exit, though it was also blocked by two boulders. In a third boulder, a little farther to the left, it was possible to identify some brands.
Jill asked Chris to get the torch close to it and for her fortune, she recognized symbols that could represent the answers to that place.
After a few seconds analyzing them, Jill smiled slightly and looked at Chris.
"Here it's possible to identify a mark that points out to the middle of the sky, where we have an eclipse and some clouds. The interesting thing is that this brand is not an arrow but a thunder."
"What's your opinion about it?"
"Hmmm ... I don't think it refers to an eclipse, but to some time of the day. The sun or the moon in the middle of the sky may represent an exact time. Something must happen at this time that would allow the boulders to move maybe"
"Hmmm. And what do we do now?"
"We wait." Jill smiled looking for Chris' eyes among the shadows involving them. "I think you should put the torch somewhere to lie down and rest for a while, we don't know how long we will have to wait."
"You're right." He nodded. "I'll keep this book in the backpack, I do not like to look at this black cape."
Jill lay on the floor and placed her head to the small entrance direction in the ceiling so she could see the stars. A starry night and the slight breeze coming through there represented the hope of getting out of that place well and with Chris. Somehow she felt sorry for the others who did not survive and their friends who were lost along the way. She felt sad by the way she had to act with Leon, but she also needed to admit that to see Chris was well brought her a sense of relief.
But the great feeling of relief was quickly replaced by fear when Jill remembered the dream from the girl. She remembered of something she needed to do and she had no idea what it would be. At that time she put her hand to her forehead and sighed deeply.
"Do you regret?"
Chris's voice, sitting next to her, interrupted her thoughts, Jill sat up and with the torchlight reflecting his face, she could see that Chris frowned. It was not necessary to ask him to know what he was talking about and try to change the subject would also not be a good alternative.
"I'm not. I had my reasons and I do not expect that neither you nor he understand me."
"Aw Jill. I didn't think you could be so impetuous."
"There are many things you do not know about me. One is that I'm not afraid to act when I'm sure it's the best, even if everyone says the opposite."
"You are wrong. I had noticed this before."
"Do not fool yourself. You don't know me, Chris. I can still surprise or disappoint you."
Chris grabbed her arm and got Jill closer. Silent for a moment, their gazes met in the dim light. Although firm, Chris' hand seemed soft when it touched her skin as he failed to hold her arm and started to stroke it. With the other hand, Chris touched Jill's neck causing her to arch her head back.
Jill was totally unresponsive before that unexpected touch.
Chris came up to her neck, kissing it gently before pulling her head back and close to his face until his nose touched her nose.
Gasping for breath Jill felt the closeness of his lips from her lips and opened hers preparing them for a kiss that did not happen. Chris just touched her upper lip with his lower lip gently and he pulled her softly away before their lips could get involved.
"Are you testing my self-control?"
"No! I'm praying that you do not have it..." Chris said as he held her chin, rubbing their lips one more time. "Well, I said I would not try that again and am willing to keep my word..."
"No, it's not a good time for this kind of game, Chris."
"Consider the mission is almost finished, it's a great time." He whispered close to her ear "But I'm not kidding. I had already told you what would be my answer to you..."
"Chris ..." Jill placed her hand to his face. "We cannot."
"Cause of that guy?"
"No. I... talked to him." Jill sighed before continuing. "Still, tomorrow is so uncertain ... There are things you do not know..."
"Let's live it today. Maybe I will never find someone who makes me feel this way, so I choose to collect wonderful memories that can never be stolen from me. But I will respect your choice."
For days denying what she felt and what she wanted and Jill realized that nothing had changed her feelings for the man. She trusted and admired him without really knowing why. Feeling him so close and evaluating all the sensations that invaded her that moment made her realize that she could only assume that she was deeply in love with the strange groonan captain.
A foolish and inconvenient feeling that happened at an unexpected time. Feeling Chris' hands running through her skin and Jill told herself she did not know what to expect of the future. That maybe she would not even see that man again.
She didn't want to imagine what else could happen to him on their way back or even what Wesker himself could do. But at that moment she had him there in front of her and her heart yearned to live the moment. Her soul begged to stay connected to his. Her body begged for the touch of that so strange and known man.
"How can I feel something for the man who gives my life back, but steals me peace?
"Because you're mine ... my lovely gypsy of the sea."
Leaving all the worries behind, Jill decided to just listen to her heart. In a single, but smooth movement, she pulled Chris closer to her allowing their lips to meet.
Although passionate, the kiss was also tender and deep. A kiss born of new and true feelings. Jill would not know how to describe it, but all she could say about what she felt at that moment was that it was transcendental. Unlike anything she had experienced before, that went beyond the physical connection, that was something that came from their soul.
When Chris took his big hands to her bodice and started untying it, she did not stop him. She knew what would happen and she felt calm, at peace, although she could feel the butterflies in her stomach too.
And as soon as their bodies met naturally, heaven became tangible. For the first time she knew that she was not only having her body touched, but her soul.
