Mai's POV
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. That is not what I had been expecting... Okay, I didn't know what to expect, but this is crazy!
"W-what?!" I asked with wide eyes and a gaped mouth.
"Mother... No, we cannot go back to England with you." Naru stated firmly. Luella stopped smiling and frowned along with Madoka.
"And why not?"
"First of all, I have the office and—"
"Noll, I'm pretty sure you can close the office for a week or so." Luella said as the waiter came back with our orders. I heard Madoka thank him before he left.
"And need I remind you, son, that you lost our game of poker the other day?" Martin asked with a glint in his eyes. "So you can't work for a week anyways."
Even Martin's on their side? Wow... Wait, what did he say?! I slowly turned my head to look at Naru.
"You gamble?!" I shrieked, somewhat horrified.
"No, I do not gamble."
"Well, it sure seems like it to me! What were you doing earlier today on you computer then?!"
Naru looked away from me. "Playing solitaire."
I slightly threw my hands up in a frustrated 'unbelievable' sort of way. I can't believe Naru gambles, but I'm kinda just over-reacting a little for the whole girlfriend role.
"Now, now you two, there's no need to get into an argument over that."
"Madoka's right," Luella agreed cheerfully. "but this is great! It means you can come to England then with the office already being closed, and Mai won't have to worry about school since she's graduating tomorrow! Not to mention you have to go since we—"
"We're not going, Mother."
"—already bought the tickets for you three." Luella finished in delight, completely ignoring Naru's protest. I had noticed Lin looked surprised when Luella had said 'you three.' I secretly glared at him. That's right, Lin! If we're being forced into going, You're. Coming. Too! Madoka will just drag you there anyway!
"You what?" Naru growled. Was it just me... or was my plate vibrating? Apparently Luella and them must have felt it too.
"Oliver, control yourself! And people are staring to stare!" She hissed at him. Ohhh, now I get it! That's why they wanted to wait until we got to the restaurant! They waited until we were around random strangers so Naru would behave himself more. They sure did think of everything, didn't they? But right now I really don't think Naru cares about if the other people stare or not. He seems a little infuriated so I decided to speak before he really started yelling at them. I for one don't want us to be center of attention... again.
"Why would you buy the tickets without even asking us first?" I asked, placing a hand on Naru's arm as a way of telling him to calm down.
"Noll hasn't been home for almost a year. I thought maybe he would at least put up with coming back for a week or two, but obviously I was wrong!" Luella huffed at her son. Her gaze shifted back to me again. "But Mai, wouldn't you like to go? I'm sure you'd like to right?"
Oh no, I'm her target now! I nervously glanced around not knowing what to say; Naru was giving me a death glare.
"Well... um..." Truth is I did want to go—one day—but I knew I couldn't now under these circumstances and also with Naru's parents paying my way!
"See, Noll? She does want to! It's settle, you're going!" Luella exclaimed. I felt the glare harden even more. Oh come on, Naru! Like this is my fault! You knew we were going the moment your mother mentioned England! I glanced at Naru only for it to cause me to flinch. I quickly looked down at my food and awkwardly began to eat it.
The rest of dinner was completely silent.
It wasn't until we walked out of the restaurant and began walking to our respective cars that Luella yelled 'We leave Monday morning just so you know!' and quickly dashed into Lin's car as did Madoka and Martin. Lin sighed heavily before climbing into his car also. Naru glared at them before getting into his own while I stood there as they hurriedly drove off, leaving me with Naru's wrath. Bunch of traitors! Apparently this is a "defend for yourself" type of family.
"Mai, get in." Naru growled. I swiftly got in and didn't dare complain. This makes twice in one week I'm stuck with an angry Naru with no way out.. Great. After a while of a very uncomfortable, awkward silence, I fearfully glanced at Naru. He was glaring at the road in front of us with his hands clutching the steering wheel very tightly. I took a deep breath.
"Naru..." I began softly in hope that it would be a better chance he wouldn't lash out at me. "I know you're mad at your mother and everything but... is it really so bad to go back to England? It's just a visit... I mean, I know the timing is bad with the circumstances right now, but it's obvious your parents just miss you and just want you home for a bit. They haven't seen you in a year, that's like five years in parent-time." I paused as Naru gave me one of those 'are you stupid?' looks. I had to smile at that. At least he doesn't seem mad now, and he doesn't have that iron grip anymore. I heard Naru in defeat before glancing at me again.
"Do you even want to go, Mai?" I bit my lip before my smile turned sheepish.
"Well... Yeah, kinda. Like I said before though, not the best timing for me to go, I don't think anyway... but let's face it, your mother's made it clear that we're going no matter what we say."
"Still think they're 'fun and wonderful'?" Naru asked, mocking me slightly from what I said earlier this week.
"They may be a little pushy but—"
"A little?" Naru scoffed. "Mai, don't sugar coat it."
Oh, who am I kidding? Naru's right.
"Okay, fine, they're the pushiest people I've ever met!" I couldn't help but smile though. Naru smirked. "But yes, my opinion of them still stands. I know deep down you think they're fun and wonderful too. After all they still are your parents so you have to love them unconditionally and vice versa." I teased him. Naru just rolled his eyes. I looked out my window and saw Naru was pulling over to park in front of my apartment. "I know I probably don't have to tell you this, but be thankful your parents are still here with you."
I got out the car and was about to close the door, but I stopped as Naru called my name. I bent down slightly to look at him. He was wearing an expression I couldn't really decipher at the time. Naru just stared at me for what seemed like the longest time before he spoke.
"Are you...leaving early tomorrow?" He questioned, a bit awkwardly. I blinked.
"Uh... Yeah, after I wake up and get dressed I have to head to school to help prepare everything." I answered him. I was slightly confused, but I didn't let it show.
"You'll probably just make a mess of things instead of helping." All emotion was wiped from his face, but you could hear the teasing in his voice. I puffed out my cheeks and glared at him.
"Jerk." I was about to shut the car door once again, but this time it was me who stopped myself. I was hesitant at the thought, but before I knew what I was saying, I had asked Naru if he wanted to come in for a cup of tea. I blushed as my words sunk in. I stuttered for an apology just as Naru gave me his answer. What surprised me more than the previous words that had come out of my mouth was the fact that Naru actually accepted.
As we walked to my apartment, I just decided he wanted tea after what happened with Madoka and his parents, to calm him down all the way. We entered my apartment, and I told Naru to make himself comfortable while I disappeared into my little kitchen. When I came back out with our tea in hand, I noticed Naru staring at a photograph of me and my parents that I had on a small table beside the couch.
"That picture was taken on my fourth birthday." I commented quietly as I smiled at the small but happy memory from that day. Naru turned his head towards me, tearing his eyes away from the picture. I sat down beside him and handed him the tea which he took. He glanced at the picture again.
"How did your parents die?" He asked bluntly, suddenly. "You've never said."
"Well... My dad died in a car accident one morning on his way to work. He died five months after that picture was taken," I nodded towards it. "so it's the most recent one I had of him. My mom... well, she got really sick and just kept getting worse. She never got any better. She died a few weeks before I turned thirteen..." Naru nodded wordlessly and sipped his tea, silence falling between us.
"Mai..." He started after a few moments. "Do you even have a passport?"
I smiled apologetically as I realized he was still trying to get out of going back to England. "Actually I do. A couple years ago I was suppose to go on a trip with my friend and her family, but I ended up real sick so I couldn't go." I laughed silently.
"They must have checked to see if you had one before they told us we were going then..."
"How would they have checked?" I asked, confused.
"Oh, they have their ways, Mai."
The next day was my graduation. A bunch of different emotions flowed through me. I think embarrassed and slightly humiliated were at the top of the list though. When I went to go get my diploma Monk, Yasu, Madoka, and Luella stood up and cheered very loudly calling my name and clapping. Not only was I embarrassed, but I'm pretty sure the rest of my 'family' were also. It was close to half an hour afterwards that the ceremony ended. I went over to where Naru and everyone else was, surprisingly even Masako came. She doesn't like Naru anymore, but for whatever reason she still hates me.
"Hey—" Before I could even get another word out, I was trapped in a bone crushing hug.
"Ah, my little Mai's growing up so fast! Don't leave me, Mai!" Monk cried as he held me close.
"Where do you think she's going, you perverted idiot?!" I heard Ayako yell. She made Monk released me and then she pulled me into a gentle hug. "These are for you." She stated as she handed me a bouquet of roses. My eyes widened in surprise.
"Oh, thank you! They're beautiful, Ayako!" I smiled before giving her another hug.
"Aww, I wanted to be the one who gave them to her..."
Whack!
"Shut it."
I laughed. Everyone else—except Naru, Lin, and Masako—gave me a hug and congratulated me. Afterwards I ended up beside Naru; he wrapped an arm around my waist and brought me closer to him. I couldn't help but smile again and blush which Yasu just had to tease me about it and asked why I was so red. As I was stuttering for an answer, I caught sight of Hiro. He was talking with some of his friends a little ways from us. He glanced in our direction and then did a double take when he saw me. I could tell Hiro's eyes looked at everyone around me for a moment before he started walking this way.
Oh no.
Heh, heh... What do you think Hiro's going to do? Ruin everything for Mai and Naru?! Tell everyone their little secret since he knows all?! ;) Please review!
