Chapter 3
Two weeks later, Luke and Lorelai arrived back at the airport from their honeymoon. Rory wanted to surprise them so went to meet them at the airport. She was waiting at the place where everyone came out with a banner for a joke. Welcome Home, Mr and Mrs Danes! x it read.
Rory heard them before she saw them and smirked to herself.
"That air hostess was totally flirting with you!" She heard her mom say.
"No she wasn't!" Luke said.
Rory grinned and then saw them appear and squealed. "Mom!" She said and ran over to them dropping the banner.
"Hey kid!" Lorelai smiled. "You didn't have to come all this way to meet us."
"I may have missed you a tiny bit..." Rory said looking at the floor.
"Aw we missed you too!" Lorelai said hugging her tightly.
Rory smiled and then hugged Luke. "How was the honeymoon?" She asked.
"Amazing. Well apart from your mom stealing literally everything from the hotel we were staying at." Luke smirked.
"They shouldn't put so many things in our rooms! It's too tempting!" Lorelai replied.
Rory laughed. She picked up her banner. "Do you like it? Lane helped me make it!" She grinned.
They both laughed. "It's lovely."
"Can we go get coffee now please please please?" Lorelai said. They all laughed and left.
A few hours later they were home again. Luke was in the kitchen. He came in shaking his head. "How did you cope with like nothing in the kitchen?" He said to Rory.
"I ate out and had takeaways." Rory replied.
"That's my girl!" Lorelai grinned.
Luke sighed. "I guess I'm the one that has to go to the store then?"
"That's why we love you." Lorelai smiled and kissed him.
"Fine see you two in a bit." Luke said and left.
"So was it really amazing? What was the hotel like?" Rory smiled.
"Aw kid it was lovely. Just me and Luke. Paradise." Lorelai sighed and smiled.
Rory smiled. "I'm glad."
"Oooooh I nearly forgot! We got you presents!" Lorelai said scrambling with the bag.
"Presents? As in more than one?" Rory said.
"Well I got you one from both of us but Luke insisted on getting you one just from me."
"Aw that's sweet." Rory said.
Lorelai pulled out two bags and handed them to Rory. She opened the one from her mum first. Rory laughed. "Yep I can never have too many books. Thanks mom!" Rory smiled hugging her and looking at the funny foreign books her mom had bought her.
Rory then opened the one from Luke. "Wow this is amazing..." She said quietly.
"He spent ages in the shop getting that done. He wouldn't leave until it was perfect." Lorelai smiled.
Rory gazed down at it. It was a photo of her and Luke dancing during the reception of the wedding next to one of them standing outside straight after the wedding. She smiled. "It's lovely. I haven't got any of just me and him."
"Anyway, why is he taking so long? The store's only across the road and I'm hungry!" Lorelai moaned.
"Maybe there's a queue." Rory suggested.
Suddenly they heard sirens. Rory went to look out of the window. "Oh my god..." She said quietly.
"What?" Lorelai said worried.
"Mom, it's Luke! It looks like he's been knocked over!" Rory said grabbing her coat and rushing outside, closely followed by Lorelai.
"Luke!" Rory shouted running over to him. Thee paramedics were already there.
Lorelai reached them and crouched down and held Luke's hand. "What happened?" She asked the paramedic.
"We think he was knocked down by a car. Witnesses saw a car speeding away."
"They didn't even stop?" Rory asked angrily. She looked down at Luke with tears in her eyes, who had his eyes closed. "He'll be ok though right?"
"We have to get him to the hospital. I'm afraid only one of you can go in the ambulance." The paramedic said sympathetically.
Rory wiped her eyes. "You go mom. I should go and tell Jess. I'll get him to drive us straight there." She said.
"You sure hon?" Lorelai said, emotionally.
Rory nodded. "Go. He needs you. Ring me if anything changes." Lorelai nodded and went off in the ambulance.
Rory took a while to gather herself and then ran to the diner. She ran through it and up the stairs into the flat despite the questions from everyone in the diner. "Jess?!" She called as she banged on the door.
Jess opened it. "Rory?"
"Jess, it's Luke! There's been an accident! We have to go to the hospital now. Do you have your car outside?" Rory said.
Jess was shocked. "Um...yeh..." He said grabbing his coat. "Let's go."
They both ran downstairs and out and got into his car.
"What happened?" He asked as they were driving.
Rory felt some fresh tears emerging. "We don't know. He only went out to get things from the store. We think a car hit him and then sped away. Oh god, it's all my fault!" She started crying.
"How is it your fault?" Jess said.
"I should have had food in. That way, Luke wouldn't have had to go out!"
"Rory, listen to me. It's not your fault. Noone could have seen this coming." Jess said softly and reached over and squeezed her hand.
About twenty minutes later, they reached the hospital and saw Lorelai pacing around. "Mom!" Rory called running over. "What's going on?"
"Um..they think he was knocked unconscious so they're..um.. checking that there's no brain damage..." Lorelai said tears streaming down her face. "They won't say anymore..."
Rory was devastated and hugged her mom tightly. A doctor then emerged and went over to them. "Are you here for Luke Danes?" He asked.
"Yes is he ok?" Lorelai asked.
"Well the good news is that there's no brain damage. He's fractured his wrist and has some bruising. He was very lucky." The doctor said.
They all breathed a sigh of relief. "So we can see him?" Lorelai asked.
"Yes but I have to warn you. He's not woken up yet and that might take a while." He said.
They nodded and went in.
They had sat with Luke the whole afternoon and evening. Jess went home promising to come back the next day.
"Mom you look exhausted. You must be tired after flying back today and everything else. You go home and sleep." Rory said softly.
"What about you hon? You look knackered too."
"I'll come in a bit. I just want to stay a bit longer." Rory said.
Lorelai nodded and kissed the top of her head and then left.
The next morning, Lorelai realised Rory had not come home. She went to the hospital and to Luke's room. She smiled as she saw the sight. Rory was asleep in the chair next to Luke's bed with a blanket over her. She had stayed by his side the whole night.
Hope you enjoyed the little twist! Let me know what you think! :)
