Chapter 4

"Hon? Darling?" Lorelai said softly, gently shaking Rory.

"Mom?" Rory said looking around. She then panicked. "I'm so sorry mom. I hope you weren't worried. I just couldn't leave him and then I must have just fallen asleep..." She said.

"It's fine sweetie. Any change?" She said looking at Luke sadly.

Rory shook her head. "No." She said sadly. "Mom?"

"Yeh hon?"

"He is going to be ok, isn't he?" Rory asked.

"Of course he is." Lorelai smiled bravely for her daughter. "He's a tough one."

"But he hasn't woken up yet. That's not normal..." Rory worried.

Lorelai sighed. "The doctor said there's no brain damage so that's good, hon."

"Yeh but what if he doesn't wake up? I can't lose him mom..." Rory said quietly.

Lorelai hugged her daughter tightly. "Why don't you go home and get some proper rest and have a shower?"

"But..." Rory said looking at Luke.

"I'll be here kid. I'll let you know if there's any change." She said softly.

Rory sighed but nodded. She went over and kissed Luke on the forehead. "I love you Luke." She whispered quietly. She then hugged her mom and went home.

She arrived back at the house and sat down on the sofa. She picked up the photos Luke got made for her and smiled sadly at them. Why did bad things have to happen to the best people? Suddenly the doorbell rang bringing her out of her thoughts. She went and answered it. It was Lane.

"Hey..." Rory smiled.

"Oh Rory I'm so sorry. How is he?" Lane said hugging her best friend.

"I don't know.." She admitted. "He still hasn't woken up yet but the doctor said there was no brain damage."

"Well that's good at least."

"I know but will that change the longer he doesn't wake up? I don't know how these things work. Lane, I can't lose him. Not now." Rory said close to tears.

Lane just hugged her. "I'm sure he'll be fine. He's a fighter."

Rory just nodded.

"So have they said anything about the car who was driving yet?"

"No but I'm going to kill whoever it was. I can't believe they just drove and didn't stop!" Rory said getting angry. "Who does that?"

Lane smiled sympathetically. "I don't know but I'm sure they'll find whoever it was."

Rory smiled and hugged Lane. "Thanks for coming over Lane. I'm going to have a shower and then maybe a nap and then I want to get back to the hospital."

Lane nodded understanding. "Of course! I'll leave you to it. You know where I am if you want to talk."

Rory nodded and hugged her again. "Thanks!"

Two hours later, Rory arrived back at the hospital to find the police in the reception. She went to Luke's room.

"Mom are the police here about the car? Have they found who did it?" Rory asked.

"No. They haven't found anything out yet." Lorelai sighed.

Rory looked at Luke. "Any change?"

"Nothing. Sorry hon." Lorelai said sadly.

"Oh grandma and grandpa rang the house when I was there. They said they were really sorry to hear about Luke and if we needed anything, just let them know." Rory said. Lorelai smiled and nodded.

A few hours later, Lorelai and Rory were sat either side of Luke debating about an advert that was just on the tv they have in the room.

"It's just not practical!" Rory argued.

"Yeh but it would be so fun!" Lorelai argued back.

"I see nothing's changed then..." A voice said quietly.

They turned to see Luke smirking. "Luke!" Rory beamed and hugged him gently.

"Hey hubby..." Lorelai smiled and kissed him.

"Are you in pain?" Rory asked worried. "We should get a nurse!"

"No, I feel ok...just a little shaken up." Luke said. "It's good to see you two though." He smiled.

"Well this one hasn't left your side apart from just a couple of hours this afternoon." Lorelai said smiling over at Rory.

Luke was touched. "Really? You stayed all night? You didn't need to."

"I didn't want to leave you..." Rory said going slightly red and looking at the floor.

Luke just smiled and held out his hand. Rory smiled and took it gently.

The doctor came in with a policeman. "It's good to see you awake." He smiled at Luke. Luke gave a quick nod.

Lorelai looked at the policeman. "Have you got any news?" She asked.

"We have found out who the car belonged to." The policeman said. "Now does the name Christopher Hayden mean anything to you?" He asked.

There was a stunned silence.

"Oh my god..." Rory said quietly.
