Chapter 6

"I'm afraid it's a bit more complicated than this. This is an serious offence and we have several witnesses to the accident." The policeman said. "We will move forward with the investigation. It's attempted murder so it is our duty to."

"Even without my statement?" Luke asked.

"I'm afraid so. I know this is a hard situation but I would encourage you to help us as this could happen again."

Rory looked worried at that. "You mean he could try it again?" She asked, looking at Luke worriedly.

"We can't be sure but we have to factor that it." The policeman said. "Now we can ask Luke for his statement and your mom and there were several witnesses so you don't need to get involved if you don't want to." He said kindly to Rory.

Rory just shook her head. "I want to help..."

Luke squeezed her hand. "You don't have to."

"I want to." She said quietly, looking at the floor. "I could have lost you and I don't want to have to go through that again and lose my only dad." She continued, continuing to look at the floor. Rory always felt uncomfortable talking about her feelings like that to Luke but she wanted him to know.

Luke nodded. "Well that's very good of you. You're an exceptional kid." He said quietly, very touched.

Luke was being discharged the next day after a thorough examination and approval of the doctors. They all went home together. About an hour later, the doorbell went and it was the police.

Luke and Rory were sat watching tv while Lorelai went to answer it.

"We come with some news. We have managed to find Christopher and have arrested him but he is pleading not guilty so I'm afraid it looks like there will be a trial." The policeman said.

Everyone was shocked. "He's not admitting it?" Lorelai asked.

"I'm afraid not. We're going to have to gather evidence against him for the trial and I'm afraid you'll all have to be witnesses." He said.

Rory froze on the sofa. It was one thing giving a statement but giving evidence in a court is a whole different thing. She would have to face him.

"I'll leave you for today but we should be back in the next few days to start taking statements." He said.

Lorelai nodded and thanked him and let him out.

Rory was just watching the tv not saying anything. Luke was looking at her. "This is wrong." He said. "Do they really need Rory?" He said slightly annoyed and protective over her.

Lorelai sighed. "I don't know..." She admitted. "This is such a mess. I never knew Chris would be capable of something like this. I mean I would understand if he was jealous but this..." She said, her voice breaking.

"Come here." Luke said softly. Lorelai went over and sat next to him and leant her head on his shoulder.

"This is such a mess. These weeks were meant to be the happiest of our lives." She said quietly.

"I know." He said softly. "But we're still here, together. Whatever happens, we have each other." He said.

"I'm going to do some homework. I've still got one deadline before the graduation." Rory said quietly and then went to her room.

Luke felt awful. "She shouldn't have to go through something like this. It's not fair on her." He said.

"Hey, it's not your fault. You didn't ask Chris to run you over." Lorelai reassured him, sensing his guilt. "Rory doesn't blame you. She's just confused and probably needs some space." She said softly.

Luke nodded.

The next few days were filled with the police questioning the family and gathering evidence. Rory found it tough but she wanted to do this for Luke.

One of the days, the police just wanted to talk to Rory. "Do you have a room where we can talk?" The policeman asked.

"Um yeh, we can go to the kitchen." She said.

"So what is your relationship with your dad?" He asked gently.

Rory sighed. "Rubbish. He constantly lets me down and he never bothers to contact me. The last time I saw him was my birthday last year and even then it was just for an hour." She said quietly.

"And would you say he was jealous of Luke?" He asked.

"I guess so. He came round the day after the wedding shouting the odds." Rory said.

"What was he shouting?"

"Just that my mom didn't have the right to bring a strange man into my life and make me feel that he was being replaced."

"And what's your opinion on what he said?"

"I love Luke and I love that he's now my step-dad. To me, he feels like my dad. He's been in my life ever since we moved here and he has been there for me and my mom whenever we needed him." Rory said quietly.

The policeman nodded. "Thank you. I don't need anymore today. I'll let you know if we need any more information."

Rory nodded and went to let him out.

Rory went back into the living room.

"How was it hon?" Lorelai said hugging her. Luke looked over at them.

"Ok. He was just asking me about my relationship with dad and Luke." Rory said quietly.

Lorelai nodded. "Hey let's do something fun!" She said cheerily.

"Like what?" Rory asked.

"Movie night with pizza." Lorelai grinned.

"So long as Luke doesn't fall asleep again!" Rory smirked.

"Oi! I had had a long day!" Luke chuckled.

That night, they had a really nice evening, just the three of them and it started to feel like normal again, despite the upcoming trial. Rory wanted to focus on her graduation though. As she was Valedictorian, she had to write a speech so that kept her busy.
