Chapter 11
A few months had passed and Lorelai's baby bump was really starting to show. Rory had moved to Yale already. Lorelai found it hard at first but Luke was there to keep her going and smiling.
Lorelai was sat at the diner talking to Luke when her phone rang. Luke pointed at the notice on the wall saying no cellphones. Lorelai ignored him and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Mom!"
"Hey kid!" Lorelai smiled hearing Rory's voice. "How's it going?"
"Yeh good. The classes are good." She said.
"Lorelai, out!" Luke said.
"You're in the diner aren't you?" Rory smiled.
"Possibly and my grumpy husband is pushing his pregnant wife out into the cold."
Luke sighed. "You're impossible!" He said sarcastically.
"Thank you!" Lorelai grinned.
"Mom?"
"Yeh?"
"Oh I just wanted to join in." Rory said.
"Rory's feeling left out Luke." Lorelai teased.
"Hi Rory." Luke said.
"Hey!" Rory said.
"She says hey." Lorelai smiled.
"Anyway, I've got to go now to class but you're going to friday night right?" Rory asked.
"Urghhh...yeh I guess.."
"Good! Is Luke coming?" Rory asked.
"Yes he is." Lorelai smiled.
"I am what?" Luke said suspiciously.
"Good luck!" Rory teased. "Bye mom!"
"Bye hon!" She said and hung up.
"I am what?" Luke asked.
"Coming to friday night dinner." Lorelai grinned.
Luke groaned.
"Come on Luke. At least they like you now!" Lorelai said.
"They tolerate me only because you're pregnant."
"That's not true. My dad has really warmed to you." She said.
"And your mum hasn't."
Lorelai sighed. "I think Rory's going to tell them about her name change at the dinner."
"All of a more reason not to go." Luke said.
"Aw come on! You know you're going to go because you love me." Lorelai grinned.
"Fine..." Luke gave in.
Friday arrived and Luke and Lorelai were driving to Richard and Emily's. Rory was coming from Yale separately. They arrived pretty much at the same time.
Rory got out her car and smiled and ran over. She hugged her mom. "Missed you mom!" Rory beamed.
"Missed you too kid!" Lorelai said hugging her.
"I see you managed to persuade Luke to come." Rory smirked.
"More like she forced me to come." Luke said.
"Well I'm glad you did. Hey Luke!" Rory smiled and hugged him too.
They rang the doorbell and Emily answered. "Rory! Lorelai!" Emily smiled at them. "Come in!" She said.
They all went in. "Luke." Emil said politely.
"Hi Mrs Gilmore." Luke smiled. Emily was still not happy about Luke but she had to tolerate it.
They went and sat down and had drinks and met up with Richard.
"So what's new with you?" Emily asked. "Pregnancy going ok?" She asked.
"Yep it's going fine thanks mom." Lorelai said.
"I actually have some news..." Rory said wanting to get it over with.
"Oh yeh what's that? Have you found a lovely Yale boyfriend?" Emily said excitedly.
"Um no." Rory said. "I've actually changed my name."
"Changed your name?" Emily said confused. "To what?"
"Well as of last week, I am now officially Rory Danes." Rory smiled.
"What?" Emily said incredulously.
"Emily..." Richard warned.
"What Richard? This isn't right! She should have the Gilmore name, not some random name." Emily said.
"It's not a random name, grandma." Rory said.
"I bet you pushed her into this!" Emily said accusedly at Luke.
"No. It was her idea." Luke said.
"Nonsense!" Emily said.
"Mom, it was. It was nothing to do with Luke. Rory decided this herself." Lorelai said defending Luke.
"Why? Why would she want his name?" Emily said.
"Because we're a family now and I'm about to have a sister. I wanted to belong." Rory said quietly.
"But he's not your father." Emily said bluntly.
"He's as good as." Rory said. "It's done, grandma. I just wanted you to know."
"Well I think it's nice." Richard said, speaking for the first time.
"Richard!" Emily said.
"What Emily?" He said. "I do. It is clear that Rory has always seen Luke as a father figure and Lorelai does have that name as well now. And the family is expanding. It just makes sense to me, that's all."
Rory smiled at him. "Thanks grandpa."
"Whatever. So have you heard anything from Christopher at all?" She asked.
"Mom!" Lorelai said shocked.
"Well it's been several months now. I thought everything had blown over now. What does he think about the name change?" She asked.
"It's none of his business." Rory said. "He'd probably try and kill Luke again if he knew." She said quietly.
"That's in the past. You should talk to him. He's your dad." Emily said matter of factly.
Lorelai couldn't believe what she was hearing. Well she could, it was her mom after all. "That's enough mom. We don't want to talk about Chris. We've just got our lives back to normal."
"Fine. Let's go eat." Emily said in a mood.
"You know what, I'm not actually that hungry and I have lots of work to do for Yale. I think I might just go." Rory said.
"But you have to eat." Emily said.
"I'll grab something on the way." Rory said coldly. "Bye grandpa. Thanks for what you said." She said hugging him. "Bye mom, bye Luke. I' might come see you tomorrow. just want to get some work done tonight." She said hugging them both.
"Bye hon." Lorelai said.
"Bye Rory." Luke said. Rory then left.
"Way to go mom!" Lorelai said.
The rest of the dinner wasn't that fun. They left before pudding. They were out by their car. "Oh. My. God." Lorelai said. "I can't believe my mom. Well I sort of can." She said.
"Told you she didn't like me." Luke said.
Lorelai sighed. "Sorry."
"For what?"
"Her attacking you like that."
"I'm used to it. Do you think Rory's ok?" He asked.
"Yeh she'll be ok. She's used to it too." Lorelai said. They then drove home.
Several more months passed and things were frosty between Emily and Lorelai, Luke and Rory.
Rory was back for a weekend. "Hey mom!" She called as she let herself in.
"Hey kid! In the kitchen!" Lorelai called.
Rory went to the kitchen to find Luke cooking pancakes. "Ooooh pancakes!" She smiled. "Any left?" She grinned.
"Sit down and I'll make some. You're as bad as your mother." He said.
"I'll take that as a compliment." She teased and sat down.
"Wow mom you're getting big!"
"Why thank you." Lorelai teased.
"I can't believe it's only a month to go now." Rory said. "You excited?"
"Yeh can't wait."
"Thought of names yet?" Rory asked.
"No we were waiting for you. We wanted your help." Lorelai smiled.
"Naturally because I have the best taste." Rory teased.
"Pancakes are ready." Luke said placing down two plates infront of them.
"Thanks Luke! Aren't you having any?" Rory asked.
"No, they clog your heart." Luke said.
Rory smirked. "Wow you're such an optimist."
"Just telling the truth." Luke smirked.
"Alright less negativity hubby. It's not good for the baby." Lorelai teased.
They ate their pancakes and helped clean up.
The doorbell rang. It was Emily. Rory answered the door. "Oh. Hi grandma." Rory said coldly.
"I want to talk to your mother." Emily said.
Rory pointed to the kitchen and then joined Luke in the living room.
"Lorelai, I need to speak to you." Emily said.
"What is it mom?" Lorelai said.
"Well I've spoken to Christoher."
"I'm sorry. What did you say?" lorelai said shocked her mom could go that low.
"I spoke to Christopher. He said everything that has happened in the last year has been a misunderstanding." Emily said calmly.
"You had no right mom! Why do you want to ruin my life?" Lorelai said angrily.
"Oh don't exaggerate Lorelai." Emily said.
"Don't exaggerate? Don't exaggerate? He tried to kill my husband!" Lorelai shouted.
"We don't know that."
"It was his car mom! Who else could it have been?"
Rory looked at Luke in the living room. "Uh oh, should mom be getting so stressed?" She said worried.
"I'll go sort it." Luke reassured her and went to the kitchen.
"Lorelai, you ok?" Luke said concerned.
"This is no business of yours." Emily said coldly.
"She's my wife." Luke said. "And she shouldn't be getting stressed. It's not good for the baby."
He looked at Lorelai who had frozen. "Lorelai?"
"My waters have broken." She said quietly. She looked at Luke with panic. "It's too early. She can't come yet!" She said, with tears in her eyes.
Let me know what you think! :)
