Part Three

"So that's how you do it!" Link exclaimed placing his hands on his hips after being shown for the fourth time how to change a nappy. He could swear that Ghirahim grew extra limbs when he changed it, half the time, the men would be chortling away to themselves while watching Link hold the strange child by his leg while his other hand and foot would be working on trying to keep the nappy open on the table.

The women of the encampment had shown him how to feed the boy using a bottle, how to test it for its heat, yet unlike them, Link had yet to learn how to do other things while feeding the baby; if he so much as leaned over for a quill to continue working, Ghirahim would squeal like a siren. Link had asked if the women, particularly ones with new born children, would be willing to take him in; but most of them were terrified of the demon child, so it was left to him to manage running an army and take care of a child.

In fairness, Elera, if she had been alive, would have had to do the same. But women know about that kind of stuff, right?

Link's head made contact with the desk with a loud thump "I'm awake! I'm awake!"

"Another bad night huh?" spoke a voice from the doorway of his tent, Link turned on his seat, his hands busy with bottle feeding the little white haired child in his lap.

"Bad nights don't even cover it, Impa." Link yawned "I'm awake every two hours feeding him and I can't train the army properly if I'm carrying a child in a sling on my back."

Impa smiled, while being only an officer, a rank below Link, they grown up together; while they were children, Impa had always been the one to defend her book smart best friend, she never really thought he'd become a senior officer. Unlike Link's dark green garb and red cape, Impa wore dark blue clothing with the mark of the Sheikah upon the chest; had short blond hair with a single long strand with two beads in it to show that she was only in her twenties. Being slightly taller than the six foot officer, she was brash and brave in the commanding of her Hylian and Sheikah squads; she had taken on more load with Link having Ghirahim to feed and clothe and while he was thankful for it, he still looked like he hadn't slept in weeks; big black bags were forming under his eyes and he had barely any energy or willpower to stay awake.

"I'll watch him for a few hours." Impa said after a short silence.

"With all due respect, Impa; how are you not terrified of him?" Link asked changing the position of his legs with a grimace from cramp "The men find it funny, the women are frightened."

"Because I understand your reasoning, perhaps?" Impa answered taking her belt off that carried her weapons along her back "You took the child because Demise can't reach his full power without him."

"But are you sure it would have been better to just let him perish? I've made us a target." Link sighed turning to the map on the table "Demise's forces are pushing us into a corner-OW!"

Impa folded her arms as Link rubbed the back of his head "You wouldn't let him perish when you saved him from his fate. He is now your child to watch and protect."

"It would be simpler though."

"Perhaps. But Demise just has to wait for the next one and he's gaining power from somewhere, there are more of his mobs on the field and more of our warriors taking the penalty for it."

Link's head made contact with the table again. "Ah!"

"Quit arguing and go to bed!" Impa snarled grabbing him by the collar to pull him out of the chair.

"But-"

Impa picked Ghirahim out of Link's lap and held him close to her chest. "You're exhausted. I'll wake you when night comes."

"But-"

"Bed! Now!" Impa ordered shoving him into the area that served as personal quarters; he was writhing but too tired to argue his thoughts over with her; he just flopped in his cot, a single piece of stretched fabric over a frame face first on top of the pillows and was out like a light.

Impa knew even less about looking after a child, all she knew was that they needed feeding and changing most of the time and even then, she had no idea what to do. She felt something pulling on her braid that fell over her face. Ghirahim's tiny hands had managed to wrap around the blond hair. She looked upon the tiny face with a blank expression and sat down.

"You're very lucky." she sighed watching him play with her hair "Any other officer would have killed you."

He looked at her, round eyes staring like a cat.

"Link has a lot to learn about raising a child, he learns really fast though." she chortled, getting a gummy smile off the baby.

Nightfall came too quickly for her tastes, something felt strange, the stars twinkled and the sky and the moon coated the hills in a coat of white. Impa stepped outside the safety of Link's tent holding Ghirahim in her hands and looked around the dying fires and sleeping people that were around them all huddled like penguins. She stood in the entrance for a moment before taking a few steps around the sleepers towards a shrine that they held dear, a good luck charm that had kept them alive. Or at least, that's how they saw it.

She bowed low to the stone tablet housed within the shrine, her eyes glancing at the tiny, imperfect designs that were around it along with the not so neat writing that was housed just below three triangles symbolising the Hylian codes of honour and life in this world. She bowed in respect of that and no more. Impa proceeded to cover Ghirahim up a little tighter due to the stillness of the night; despite him not feeling cold, Link would not be too pleased if he caught one, and stood on the edge of the encampment.

"You were brought here from there." she whispered "Those beings would have used you."

"Yes. It is part of the reason I let him escape that fate." Link replied approaching from behind almost as silent as a Sheikah; her own kind.

"Are you serious about raising this boy as your son, Link? The other officers wonder if this will affect your training." Impa spoke, knowing full well what his answer would be to the point where she would give it for him. The subject had arisen before, and with no one who was willing to take him in, lead Link to be an adoptive parent. Link's answer never came, she noticed he was armed which was strange considering he would never hold Ghirahim when he had his sword. "Link, are you alright?"

Still nothing, he merely held his hands out for the child, his eyes staring blankly forward into the shadowy trees.

Impa gave his shoulder a shake. But he merely covered her mouth with a hand and squinted.

"SCOUT!" he shouted waking Ghirahim in an instant so that he screamed in fright. Arrows flew from the woods, making Link and Impa separate and dart back to the camp "Alert the Shiekah, get them to disband the scout's troops." Link ordered crossing her path and catching the half thrown baby. Link almost flew over the grass and people in effort to get to a bell that was standing on a small post in the middle of the encampment, surrounded by sleeping guards.

He rang it. The brass clanging driving everyone back to earth from the land of dreams.

"Scouts seen on the eastern side! Arm yourselves and to your stations!" Link roared over the ringing, Ghiarhim only matched it in pitch as the sound went right through him.

"Sir!" exclaimed a solider pointing upwards into the sky; the moon had been covered by thousands of winged beings that they had never seen before, feathered beasts with huge bills and talons as sharp as a blade.

"Archers! Skyward!" Link ordered throwing an arm over his shoulder, his voice carrying across the camp.

Arrows started to scatter in the sky, flying on the wind's breath but could not reach as the creatures swooped down towards the men and women; some branching off from the group and heading towards the woodland. A creature with a caped rider on top it glided down dangerously, a blood red beast that opened their great wing span out and stretched their feet to seize Link's shoulders, but he ducked and rolled carefully before drawing his sword towards the turning beast.

"Drop your sword and let me talk to you." whispered a voice from within his head; he ignored it and crouched, slashing the air with his blade, the glint of the metal rivalling that of the beast's claws. "You are a man with a heavy destiny dropped on your shoulders. Listen."

Link shook his head and braced himself for the creature's impact, his soldiers circling him with shields and spears in effort to protect him. Yet, he rose from the ground, his body becoming weightless. The soldiers tried to grab him as he floated from their reach, his sword leaving his grasp and landing in the grass leaving him clutching onto Ghirahim with his legs up to protect his child.

The flying beast seized him and carried him off into the night.

They flew in silence for hours, long after the sun had risen over a huge bed of water before finally; the beast dropped him on a tiny island untouched by people but had been populated by those of a robot anatomy. The bird had crossed the sea.

"I'm sorry, I did not mean to frighten you I mean no harm." spoke a female from atop the beast's back, now in the sunlight, Link could see that the beast was in fact a giant bird with a decorated beak and thick fur lining its back. The woman on it was dressed from head to toe in white and in bare foot, her thick white blond hair loose on her back under a thin blue cape that was the colour of the sky with a built in hood.

"What are you?! Why did you attack my warriors if you meant no harm?!" Link exclaimed rocking Ghirahim gently to ease his worry. The woman looked at the baby as closely as Link would allow her too "You're not having my son."

"He's your son? I thought he was of some evil spawn." the woman muttered sliding from the bird's back to join him on the island.

"How do you know that?" Link asked his voice quivering.

"I am Hylia. Goddess of your people." the woman informed bowing her head slowly towards the mortal. "And that child; was to be the soul of Demise's sword? Correct?"

"Hylia." Link repeated swallowing hard. "I-I-"

She placed a finger over his lips "No need. Mortals do things out of all their emotions. You believed that I was a threat after spotting an enemy scout. You are forgiven for that."

Link gasped a little "Why do you come to the land of mortals, madam?"

Hylia gave almost a greedy smile "To give you this." she smirked holding her arms out at waist height to allow a flash of purple and silver to enter from thin air. What she held was no more than collected dust to resemble that of a weapon, she smiled once more, this time much more innocently and gestured to Link to take the purple hilt that began to become apparent in her left hand

He was skeptical but did as asked and reached towards her hands with his own, seizing the purple dust that swirled in her palms and low and behold, the dust grew solid, forming a beautiful, unscratched and gleaming blade with a sharp edge and dark hilt. He held it above his head with a grin.

"This will be the weapon to slay and seal away the evil of this globe." Hylia spoke as he lowered his arms "But, I want you to continue to look after your son too."

"Hylia?" Link puzzled "Why have you not come to give this gift before now?"

"You needed to have a way in to have a way out. Demise now has a personal grudge against you and you will need the upper hand." Hylia mentioned turning her back "Climb onto the Loftwing, Link. I will escort you home."

Sorry it's a touch late, busy life is busy.I hate flu. I can't find my usual form so I'll admit, this part isn't the best (To put is really politely) So, this chapter has Link starting to come to grips with running an army and looking after his child, notice how he describes Ghirahim as his son and not by his name all the time? I sense attachment! The next part will be coming soon, my flu is calming down.
