Chapter 17

"You are never ready on time." Luke said sarcastically waiting downstairs, having got back from dropping off Beth at Sookie's so they could go to Rory's parents' day.

"I just need one minute!"

"You always need one minute!"

"Alright grumpy! I'm ready now, let's go!" Lorelai said rushing down the stairs.

Luke sighed and followed her out to the car. Luke was driving. They got there on time.

"See told you we wouldn't be late!" Lorelai grinned.

"Come on, let's go!" Luke said.

They got out and went to the signing in table. "I'm Lorelai Danes, Rory Danes' mother." Lorelai said, reaching for two name tags.

"Oh Danes! Wait, I think your daughter's written your name tags already." The woman behind the desk said. "Ah yes here they are. Enjoy your day." She smiled.

Lorelai took the name tags confused. She then smiled when she saw the reason why. Hers said Lorelai Danes, mom of Rory Danesand Luke's read Luke Danes, dad of Rory Danes. She smiled and put hers on and then handed the other one to Luke. Luke read it. "Did you write this?"

"No Rory did." Lorelai smiled.

Luke smiled and put it on.

"Come on, let's go find Rory!" Lorelai said looking round. It didn't take long.

Rory saw them and ran up to them. She hugged them both. "Hey! You made it!" She grinned.

"We did." Lorelai smiled. "Now where's this boyfriend of yours?" She teased.

"Is that why you came?" Rory teased.

"Maybe..." Lorelai teased.

"Lorelai..." Luke said.

"Of course not..." Lorelai smirked.

"Come on, Logan's inside." She smiled.

They followed her in.

"Logan!" Rory called. A blonde haired boy came up. "Hey Ace!" He smiled.

"Logan this is my mom." Rory introduced Lorelai.

"Nice to meet you." Logan smiled and shook her hand.

"You too." Lorelai smiled back, getting a good vibe from him.

"And this is Luke." Rory smiled. "He's my dad, well stepdad but yeh..." Rory said.

"Luke I've heard a lot about you. Apparently your coffee is to die for." Logan smiled shaking his head.

"Yep wouldn't these two know?" He said.

Rory smiled. "Come, I'll show you round." She said leaving Logan. "Oh mom?"

"Yeh?"

"Just thought I should let you know grandma and grandpa are here..."

"What?"

"Yeh...they said that since they're paying for Yale they should come to this day..." Rory said. "Think it was grandma's idea though."

"Oh..."

"Yeh but we can avoid them." Rory said, glancing at Luke.

"Too late." Lorelai said spotting them. She saw her mom notice her and glared. Thankfully she had good sense to stay away but Richard came over. "Lorelai, Luke, how lovely to see you." He smiled.

"You too dad. Why is mom here?" Lorelai said.

"Don't ask me. She was adamant in coming." Richard sighed.

"Dad? Has she actually told you why we've had a fight?" Lorelai asked.

Rory looked at Luke. "Come look at the room where the paper happens. Let them talk." She smiled.

"Good idea." He said and followed Rory.

"Well not really, she said that you had a minor misunderstanding about Luke..." He said.

Lorelai snorted. "Really? Minor? Dad, she's been in touch with Christopher. She's siding with him over everything and she wants Luke out of our lives so Christopher can take over."

"I see..." Richard said.

Lorelai sighed. "I'm sorry dad...I just thought you should know."

Richard just nodded. "Excuse me for a minute.." He said.

He went up to Emily. "Emily, a word please." He said taking her to the side. "I've just had an interesting conversation with Lorelai. She says you've been in contact with Christopher?"

"Yes I have. He's Rory's dad." Emily said bluntly.

"Emily, he nearly tried to kill Luke."

"Nonsense! It was an accident. Christopher is much more suited in that family than some random diner guy." Emily said.

"That random diner guy makes our daughter and granddaughter very happy." Richard said getting angry. "He's been there for them!"

"So what! He's not right for them."

"Not right? Do you really believe that? Rory changed her surname to his, she wants him to adopt her and she wrote dad on his name tag today. What out of that makes you think he's not right for them?" Richard demanded.

Emily was quiet. "He's controlling them. I bet he forced her to do all those things."

"I've had enough." Richard exclaimed. "If you can't accept Luke, then I don't think I can be with you anymore." He said leaving her standing dumbfounded.

The rest of parents' day went well considering. Rory enjoyed showing them round and her mom and Luke approved of Logan. It went very quickly though and soon it was time to leave.

"Thanks for coming again!" Rory said hugging them both.

"Thanks for inviting both of us." Luke smiled.

They then drove home, leaving Rory in Yale. They collected Beth and went and lounged infront of the tv. The doorbell rang and Lorelai answered it. "Dad?" She said confused.

"I'm sorry to come so late. Can I come in?" He asked.

"Yeh of course. Is something wrong?" She said leading him to the living room. Luke looked up and acknowledged Richard.

"I'm leaving your mother." He said.

"What?"

"She admitted everything and I don't agree with it so I didn't feel like I could stay with her." He said sadly.

"Oh dad..." Lorelai said and hugged him. "Would you like to stay here for a night? You can have Rory's room."

"Thank you." Richard smiled.

They all soon retired to bed. Beth was put in her crib and Lorelai went into the bathroom for a wash. Luke took off his name tag and looked at it smiling. He then got his blue baseball cap and stuck it to the inside of it. He then got into bed and waited for his wife to join him.
