Chapter 18

Luke was up early with Beth as she couldn't settle, letting Lorelai sleep in. He was on the sofa singing a little lullaby to her quietly whilst rocking her gently. Richard got up and walked to the living. He stopped when he saw Luke and smiled at the sight of him and Beth.

"Morning Luke." He finally said.

Luke was startled and turned round. "Sorry I didn't hear you, Mr Gilmore." He said getting up.

"Don't worry. And call me Richard." He smiled.

"Ok..." Luke said. There was a bit of an awkward pause. "Would you like to hold her?" He then asked.

Richard smiled. "I'd love to." He said.

Luke handed Beth over and then started with breakfast. Lorelai came down soon after. "Oh hey dad, sleep well?"

"I did thank you. And please thank Rory for letting me use her bed." Richard said.

"Will do." Lorelai said. "So dad?"

"Yeh?"

"What are you going to do?"

"I've rung a few friends and they've said I can stay with them for a few nights." Richard said.

Lorelai nodded and smiled. She went to join Luke. She wrapped her hands round his waist from the back. "Morning." She smiled.

Luke smiled. "Morning. Coffee?" He asked.

"Really?" Lorelai said.

Luke chuckled. "Sorry. Force of habit!"

A couple hours passed and Richard had left.

"I can't believe my dad left my mom. I never would have expected that..." Lorelai said once he'd left.

"You ok?" Luke asked concerned.

"Yeh, it's just weird..." Lorelai said.

Luke nodded and kissed her. "Well I've got to go to the diner today. You ok with Beth for a few hours?" He asked.

"Yeh sure! We might come visit you later."

"I'll look forward to it." He said and the left.

Lorelai smiled as he left. She then sighed and rang Rory.

"Hey mom!"

"Hey hon! How's everything?"

"Yeh really good! What about you?"

"Yeh it's good but I do have something to tell you..."

"Yeh?"

"Your grandpa left your grandma." Lorelai said softly.

"Oh...um...wow..." Rory said.

"Yeh...He stayed with us last night."

"Wow. Is he ok?"

"Yeh he seemed ok."

"He really does like Luke, doesn't he?" Rory said.

"Looks like it." Lorelai smiled.

"That's nice..." Rory smiled. "So how's my baby sister?"

"She's great. Just going to feed her in a bit and then going to take a visit to see daddy." Lorelai said.

"Luke back in the diner?"

"Yeh. It's good. It feels normal."

"Yeh normal's good." Rory said. "Anyway, I better go. I have class in a minute." She said.

"Ok hon. Speak to you soon."

"Bye mom!"

After a couple more hours, Lorelai took Beth out in her pram and headed off to the diner. She opened the door, making the familiar jingle noise, and went up to the counter. "Look who's come to see you?" Lorelai smiled.

Luke turned round and his face lit up seeing the two of them. "Hey!" She said and leant across to kiss Lorelai. He then came round the corner to say hello to Beth. "Hi baby girl. Hope your mom hasn't been leading you astray." Luke smirked glancing up at Lorelai.

"Only a cup of coffee and some burgers today." Lorelai teased.

Luke gave her a look.

"Only kidding! You know I don't cook." Lorelai smirked.

Luke just rolled his eyes. "So you spoke to Rory yet about your parents?" He asked.

"Yeh a bit earlier."

"How did she take it?"

"Yeh ok. She likes that dad likes you." She smiled.

Luke smiled back.

Meanwhile, back in Yale, Rory got a knock on her door. It was her dad. As soon as she saw, she tried to shut the door.

"Please Rory. I just want to talk." Christopher begged. "I'm not talking to your grandma anymore. I just want to say sorry."

"Well you've said it now." Rory said coldy.

"Please. 5 minutes of your time and then I will go. Please Rory." He begged.

Rory took a deep breath and opened the door wider. "5 minutes, that's it." She said coldly.

She took him to her room. "Time's ticking." Rory said.

"I'm been so stupid and I have really regretted it."

"You tried to kill Luke, dad..."

"It was an accident, I swear!" Christopher said.

"Then why didn't you stop?"

"I panicked! I knew everyone would think I did it on purpose!" He said.

"I wouldn't put it past you." Rory said coldly. "And you told those lies in court. Terrible lies about Luke and you said I told you those things!"

"I know. That was unforgivable and I'm so sorry. I was just angry and jealous, seeing you all together as one family. I knew it could have been me."

"Luke's a good man, dad." Rory said quietly. "Great man in fact. One of the loveliest people I know. He loves my mom so much and he...loves me too."

"I know..."

"If you knew, you wouldn't have done any of the stuff you did!" Rory said.

"I really am sorry. If I could apologize to Luke, I would, but I know I wouldn't get a very warm welcome. Your grandma just got into my head, that's all."

"Don't blame grandma." Rory said coldly. "I mean I'm not talking to her either and don't know if I ever will but she didn't drag you into that car."

"I know."

"5 minutes are up." She said bluntly.

"Please Rory. I want to start again if you will let me. I'm so sorry." Christopher said.

"Please go now." Rory said quietly.

Christopher nodded. "That's all I wanted to say." He said and he let himself out.

Rory lay on her bed. She really didn't know what to do.
