Chapter 20

It had been a week since Emily had gone round to the house and verbally attacked Lorelai and Rory. Rory was back in Yale. They hadn't heard any more from Emily until the doorbell went. It was a policeman.

"Hello? Can I help you?" She asked confused.

"Are you Lorelai Gilmore?"

"Yeh well Danes." She said.

"A Mrs Emily Gilmore has taken a restraining order out on a Mr Luke Danes, meaning he can't be with 100 metres of you or either daughters." He said.

Luke appeared having heard what he said. "What? That's stupid!"

"Yeh don't you need a reason?" Lorelai said.

"We're only doing our duty. Now I need you ask you to leave the premises and if we catch you within 100 metres of your wife or daughters, we will have to arrest you." The policeman said.

"This is stupid! You can't do this!" Lorelai started crying, holding on to Luke.

"I'm sorry." The policeman said.

Luke looked at Lorelai. "It'll be ok." He soothed. "I know you can take care of Beth. I'll sort it out, I promise. That lady won't stop us being together." He said gently and pulled Lorelai into a hug. He gave her a quick smile, packed some things and went to the diner flat. He waited until he was out of sight before he wiped a couple of tears from his face.

Lorelai broke down as soon as he left. She missed him already. She rang Rory.

"Hey mom!" She said cheerily."

Hey kid..." Lorelai sniffed.

"Mom? What's wrong?" Rory asked concerned.

"It's Luke..."

"What? Is he ok?"

"Your grandma has taken a restraining order out on him which means he can't come anywhere near us." Lorelai sniffed. "I don't know what to do... I can't cope without him."

"I'm coming home." Rory said without hesitation. She got in her car and drove to Stars Hollow. She passed Luke's diner where she saw Luke behind the counter. He looked up and saw her and looked really upset. Rory wiped a tear away and raised her hand to wave at him. He did the same and Rory reluctantly drove on. She got back to the house. "Mom?" She called, running to the living room. She found Lorelai curled up on the sofa crying. She ran to her and hugged her tightly. "It'll be ok mom, I promise." She said.

"How? My mom's hardly going to lift the restraining order is she?" Lorelai sniffed.

"What about grandpa? Do you think he could make her do it?" Rory said suddenly.

"I don't know hon. He moved out ages ago. They hardly speak anymore."

Rory sighed. "Can we really not see Luke? Can we even phone him?"

"It's no contact apparently. I hate my mother so much!" She said getting angry.

Luke sat in his diner not knowing what to do. He knew Emily wouldn't lift it but he wasn't going to give up on his family. He couldn't. He loved them too much. He then picked up his phone and dialled a number. "Jess? I need your help..." He said miserably.

"Uncle Luke?" Jess said surprised.

"Could you come?"

"Um sure...but what's happened?"

Luke told him everything, the accident, Emily, the restraining order.

"That bitch..." He heard Jess mutter. "I'll come now." He then said.

Luke hung up and put his head in his hands. He then slowly went up to his flat, alone.

Lorelai and Rory stayed curled up on the sofa and eventually they fell asleep next to each other.
