Chapter 22

A week and a half had passed and Luke was giving up hope. He didn't know why he had even thought Christopher would help. Everyone was miserable. The whole town noticed how miserable Luke was. He shouted at customers, made awful food and threw people out of the diner.

Lorelai and Rory were just as miserable. They really missed Luke. Rory had Yale to busy herself with but Lorelai was in that house everyday which was a constant reminder.

However, a policeman entered the diner. "Luke Danes?" He said.

Luke looked up and nodded and pointed to upstairs so he could talk. "What is it?" He asked.

"I just wanted to inform you that Christopher Hayden has handed himself in and explained everything about the situation including how Emily Gilmore has taken against you from day one. Looking back on the case, the judge has agreed that no restraining order is lifted so you may go back to your family." The policeman said.

Luke wiped his hands through his hair. He couldn't believe it. "This is real right?"

"Yes Mr Danes. We're sorry for any inconvenience." The policeman said and then left.

Luke went straight upstairs and packed and then went straight round to the house. Lorelai answered the door and gasped. "Luke?"

"A policeman's just been round to the diner. He said Christopher has handed himself in and explained everything. The restraining order has been lifted."

"Oh my god..." Lorelai said and hugged him tightly and kissed him.

"I've missed you so much." Luke said.

"You have no idea." Lorelai said and held him tightly. "Come on, Beth wants to say hello to her daddy." She said leading him in.

Luke smiled and picked up Beth. "How's my baby girl then?" He said softly and kissed her forehead.

Lorelai smiled. "I can't believe Chris handed himself in. I wonder what made him change his mind..."

"I sort of went to see him about a week ago..." Luke said.

Lorelai gave him a shocked expression. "It's ok! There was no punch up. I just explained that if he really loved Rory, he would help us and I guess he sort of listened to me..." Luke said.

"Wow..." She said and then thought. "Rory! We need to tell her you're back and about her dad..."

Luke sighed. "I never meant for him to hand himself in. That's not what I told him."

"I know. Don't worry." Lorelai reassured him and picked up the phone. She dialled Rory's number.

"Hey mom! How are you?" Rory answered.

"Good kid. Guess who's here!" She said.

"Who?"

Lorelai passed the phone over to Luke.

"Hey Rory." He said.

"Luke!" Rory exclaimed.

Luke smiled at the happiness in Rory's voice. "Yep I'm back and I'm not leaving again." He smiled.

"Oh I'm so happy you're back. Mom and Beth have missed you so much!" Rory said. "And I have as well..." She said shyly.

"I've missed you all too." Luke said.

"Thanks for sending Jess over with care packages by the way!" Rory said.

"Oh it's no big deal!" Luke said. "Listen Rory...I need to tell you something."

"Yeh?"

"Your dad's handed himself in. I went over to talk to him a week ago and asked him to help us. I never expected him to hand himself in. I'm so sorry." Luke said.

Rory was quiet for a minute.

"Rory? I will understand if you hate me." Luke said.

"I don't hate you. I can't believe you went to him for help after everything." Rory said.

"I knew he was pretty much our only hope." He said.

"Yeh. Well thanks." Rory said. "I better go. I have class." She said.

"Ok. We'll see you at the weekend yeh?"

"Yeh I'll be there."

"Ok bye Rory!"

"Bye!"

Luke sighed. "I can tell she hates me..."

"No she doesn't. Rory's not like that. She understands why you did it. And you didn't force her dad to hand himself in." Lorelai reassured him.

"I guess..."

Lorelai kissed him. "I'm so glad you're back."

Luke smiled. "Me too."

Meanwhile, back in Yale, Rory turned round. "Luke's back." She said.

Jess looked up from his book. "That's great!" He smiled.

"Yeh..." Rory said.

"What's up?"

"My dad handed himself in.." Rory said.

"Oh. I'm sorry..." Jess said. "You ok?"

"Yeh I think so...Luke went to see him apparently and asked him to help." She said.

"Rory, I know him. He wouldn't have asked your dad to hand himself in." Jess said.

"I know...I'm not mad at him..."

"What's up then?"

"It's just weird. My dad's going to be in prison..." Rory said quietly.

Jess got up and hugged her. "It'll be ok." He reassured her.
