Chapter 24

Rory took a deep breath while she stood outside the prison ready to go in to visit her dad. She was nervous. Soon it was time and she walked in and sat down at a table. Her dad soon came in and sat down opposite her.

"Rory, I'm so glad you came..." Chris smiled.

"I nearly didn't but Luke persuaded me to." Rory said quietly.

"Luke?"

"Yeh I was talking to him about it and said how I felt guilty coming after what you did to him but he told me I had no reason to feel guilty and that you're my dad and I should visit if I wanted to..."

"Ok..." Chris said shocked that Luke had said that.

"Yeh..."

"So how are things?"

"Getting better now Luke is back." Rory said. "Mom was so miserable before..."

Christopher just nodded.

"Thanks for helping us.." Rory said quietly.

Her dad smiled. "It's ok."

"So what made you change your mind? It was very sudden..." Rory couldn't help but ask.

"Your grandma rang me up when your mom went into labour. I went to the hospital and I saw you both with him. I realised how happy he made you both and how much he cared for you." He said.

Rory nodded. "Luke's a great person.."

"I know that now." He said.

"So did you talk to grandma?" Rory asked.

"I did but she thought I was being silly so I thought the only way to prove that Luke belonged with you was to tell the police everything. They couldn't do anything about grandma though as there wasn't enough evidence. Just my word against hers." He said.

Rory nodded.

Christopher sighed. "I am sorry Rory."

"Yeh you said that before." Rory said.

He sighed. He realised this was going to take much longer than he thought to regain Rory's trust and love.

Soon time was up. "See you again soon?" Her dad asked.

"Yeh maybe." Rory said. "See you." She said and then left.

Back at the house, Luke came in slamming the front door.

"Whoa! What's the matter?" Lorelai said.

"Just been speaking to Anna."

Lorelai's heart sank.

"She's taking April to New Mexico! And she's applying for full custody! She can't do that right?"

"What? No Luke, you have rights." Lorelai said.

Luke sat down. "I can't lose her..."

Lorelai sighed. "You won't Luke, you can go for partial custody. I will support you. I can talk to my dad to see if he knows any good lawyers."

Luke sighed and smiled. "Thanks.."

Lorelai kissed him. "Everything will be ok."

He just nodded.

Just then Rory returned. "Hey! I'm back!" She called coming into the living room.

They turned to look at her. "How was it hon?" Lorelai asked.

"Ok. A bit weird. He just doesn't really seem like my dad anymore. It was like I was talking to a stranger..." Rory said.

Lorelai hugged her. "I'm sure it will get better."

Rory nodded. "You ok Luke?" She asked.

Luke sighed and nodded. "Yeh it's just April stuff..."

Rory looked at her mom.

"Anna's moving to New Mexico with April and is going for full custody." Lorelai said.

"Wow. I'm sorry Luke.." Rory said.

Luke smiled at her. "Thanks. I'm not going to give up without a fight though."

"Good for you." Rory smiled.

The next day, Luke and Lorelai met up with a lawyer her dad had recommended. It all sounded positive.

"Now the final thing is a character reference." He said.

"I can do that." Lorelai said.

Luke smiled gratefully at her.

"Ok but we need two just in case." The lawyer said. "So have a think and then you can send them to me."

They nodded and left. They got back to the house and let themselves in. "What about Liz?" Lorelai asked.

"Yeh maybe but she will probably just write anecdotes from our childhood." Luke said.

"Ok what about Jess?" Lorelai asked.

"Hmmm yeh maybe." Luke said not having thought about Jess.

"How did it go?" Rory asked them. What are you discussing?"

"Yeh it was positive. They think Luke has a good chance." Lorelai said. "But he needs a second character reference."

Luke sat down with Lorelai. "I guess I'll ask Jess. There isn't really anyone else." Luke said.

Rory was quiet for a moment listening to them and then spoke up. "What about me?" She asked.

They looked at her.

"It might go in your favour if they know how much Luke has done for me even when he didn't have any obligation to." Rory said.

Luke looked at Lorelai then back to Rory. "You'd really be willing to do it?"

"Of course! You deserve to be able to spend time with your daughter. April deserves it too. She will be missing out big time if she's not able to."

Luke smiled. "Thanks Rory."

Rory nodded and smiled and then went to her room. She did some studying. She had a quick look at her phone and sighed. Ten missed calls from Logan.
