Chapter 25
Rory was back in Yale thinking about what to write in her character reference for Luke. She didn't want to screw it up for him. April deserved to have her dad in her life because he was an amazing person. She chewed on her pen while thinking and then started writing.
Back at home, Lorelai was doing the same thing. They both had to send them straight off to the lawyer who would read them out at the hearing which was in a few days.
In a few days, the character references were done and sent off and Luke was waiting outside the room with his lawyer waiting for it to begin. A woman came out and invited them all in.
Both lawyers had their say in the matter and then it was time for the character references. First was Lorelai's.
For the ten years I have know Luke Danes, I know him to be a honest, kind and amazing man. He has always been there for me and my daughter. Even when I had my ups and downs with him, he was always a constant in my daughter's life. He came to her birthday parties, cheered her on at her high school graduation and has constantly supported her. He has been there for my daughter even when he didn't need to be. With his own daughter, he didn't have that chance so I please urge you to let his daughter find out what an amazing and lovely person her dad is. She needs him in her life and he needs her. Once you have Luke Danes in your life, you always have him in your life.
Luke smiled to himself hearing this.
"The next one is from a Miss Rory Gilmore." The woman in charge said. Luke looked up. She began to read.
What can I say about the man in the baseball cap? I have known Luke ever since I moved here with my mom and from that first day I knew I could always rely on him. He realised my mom had to work to earn money to look after me and feed us. He opened his diner after hours so I could stay there and do my homework while my mom finished working. He would then cook us anything we wanted and never took no for an answer. He came to my birthdays, my high school graduations and he came whenever I needed him. He came when my dad couldn't. Luke had no obligation to help us but he did. He would come over and comfort me if I was upset and make me feel better. He has been a constant father figure in my life and I am so proud to call him my step dad. Please let him have his chance to be an amazing dad to his daughter. I know how caring and loving he is and if I was his biological daughter, I would be so proud to call him my dad. He is one of the loveliest people I've ever met and he's been there for me and my mom through thick and thin. Even when him and my mom argued, he would always take the time to talk to me and make sure I was ok. I hope you let him see his daughter because he deserves it so much, and to deny April any contact with him would be a travesty. She has to know what an amazing dad she has.
Thank you,
Rory Gilmore
Luke wiped a tear out of his eye. He was so touched. He smiled to himself.
Lorelai was at home feeding Beth when the phone rang. "Hello?"
"I won!" Luke said happily.
"Oh Luke, that's great news!" Lorelai said genuinely happy for him.
"I have to thank you and Rory though. It was the character references that swayed the decision." Luke said. "Thank you." He said sincerely.
Lorelai smiled. "It's no problem. So you on your way home?"
"Yeh I'm coming now!" Luke said.
"Ok see you soon!" Lorelai said and hung up. She then rang Rory.
"Hey mom!"
"He won!" Lorelai said.
"Oh my god, that's great! I'm so happy for him!" Rory exclaimed.
Lorelai smiled. "Apparently, it was the character references that swayed the decision."
Rory smiled to herself. "I'm glad. Oh mom?"
"Yeh?"
"I was just wondering whether we should make friday night dinner a thing again?"
"Friday night dinners? Why?" Lorelai said shocked.
"I mean, obviously not with grandma, but we could arrange something with grandpa maybe and we could host it at ours. That way I know, that I will see you guys at least once a week." Rory said.
Lorelai smiled. "I think that's a lovely idea."
Rory smiled. "Ok well I have to go. See you mom! And say congrats to Luke from me!"
"Will do kid! Bye!"
Luke arrived back about 30 minutes later. He hugged and kissed Lorelai. "Thank you so much! I couldn't have done this without you." He smiled.
Lorelai smiled. "You don't have to thank me. So do you know when you get to see April next?"
"Yeh, she's coming over next weekend." Luke smiled.
"That's great. We should plan something to do." She smiled.
Luke nodded. "Do you think Rory could get away too? I would love for April and Rory to get to know each other better."
Lorelai smiled. "I'm sure she could."
Luke smiled. He sat down with a huge sigh. "I'm so glad it's over."
"Oh hey, Rory had an idea of reinstating friday night dinners, obviously without my mom, but we could invite my dad round? Maybe he could meet April?"
"Yeh that sounds good." Luke said.
Lorelai smiled. "Good."
Meanwhile, in Yale, Rory was being inundated with texts.
Why won't you talk to me? I've said I'm sorry! xx
We were on a break Rory. I love you. Please call me. xx
Please Rory, I just want to talk. xx
Rory sighed. She did love Logan but he had hurt her badly. She didn't know whether he could ever trust him again.
Hope you enjoyed! Let me know what you think! :)
