Korra's POV
I had to admit that after Unalaq's death I felt extremely relieved. I slept better at night, I just...I felt like I was set free. Hotch was very supportive, giving me my space but at the same time making sure I wasn't alone and I had to admit that it was kind of cute the way he looked after me. Of course I also knew the other reason for his protectiveness. It was no secret that my boyfriend wasn't happy to have my former partner around and although I didn't mind it as much as he did, it got a little uncomfortable when every time I'd look up from my paperwork I'd find him staring at me. Then there was the kiss he gave me. I was still pissed about that and made it known to Howl, ignoring him most of the time. I felt Mako kiss my temple and I looked to see him with a case file in his hand. I grinned. About time. I could use a distraction.
Everyone met at the conference room and Lin came in, looking a little nervous. It would be her first case as director. All eyes were on her. She waited till we were all seated before the briefing began. Two men had been beaten to death in the past four days in the Dragon Flats district of the city. My head tilted to the side when I came across a crime scene photo. Both I time had their boxers and pants pulled down to their ankles. Odd.
"There was no sign of sexual assault," Lin concluded.
"So it was a message?" Rossi inquired.
"Too early to say," Hotch answered. "But it does look like this unsub is just getting started. Rossi you and Korra head to the Dragon Flats district. Agent Cruz and Asami you go to where the first victim was found. I'll be here with Iroh gathering any information we can on these me ."
We nodded and I stood to get my gun and jacket from the office. Hotch followed me, giving me a quick kiss and asking me to be careful to what answered that I would. My best friend and I talked a little to pass the time, asking me several times if I was sure I was ready to be on the field to which I assured I was. We arrived at the alley, being met by an officer before he let us go through and we began to look around. I didn't know the unsub's motive but he made he killed his victims. I spotted an empty bottle of wine and went over to it before some writing got my attention. I felt my blood run cold and I took out my inhaler to give it a puff before pulling my cellphone out.
"Korra, is everything okay?"
"I know what this is about. It's about Unalaq."
"What? What does Unalaq have to do with this?"
"The words 'Look at me' were found in the alley. I you look at the mini mart you'll see them there too," I explained. I closed my eyes tightly. "It's what he used to say to me."
Howl's POV
When we got back to the office everyone was waiting for us and I noticed how uncomfortable Korra was. Hotch kept talking to her and she'd nod her head but I knew her well enough to know she wasn't really listening. I took a seat and I watched as everyone shared looks with each other. I frowned. Had something happened? Finally my former partner took a deep breath and our supervisor asked for our attention. He told us about Unalaq Morgan's indirect involvement in this case and I raised a brow. Unalaq? Korra's uncle? They clarified it wasn't him doing the murder's but because of him.
"Unalaq Morgan was an expert...at spotting and exploring vulnerabilities in adolescent girls that he coached at the Youth Center," she began. "But they weren't the only ones. When my mom was admitted to a mental facility he took custody of me and he...he molested and beat me."
My former partner paused, taking a deep breath. "Agent Morgan, you don't have to do this," Director Beifong told her.
"They all need to be up to date. They need to understand the killer's M.O.," Korra answered, and I knew she was referring to me. "Once he had a lock on you, he'd use it to exploit you. For me it was my mom. And whenever he r*** me he'd say 'Look at me'."
I felt like someone had thrown a bucket of water with ice at me. Korra...she had been... Suddenly it all made sense. Her distant personality, her hesitance to start a relationship, her leaving me when we were making out... She had a trauma that no one knew about. And I felt like a jerk about what I said a few days ago.
'Because you were already sleeping with him?'
'Do you want a promotion or something?'
"Do you know if he used to tell that to all his victims or just you?" Rossi asked.
"April told me he told her and Lilly that. So it's safe to say that everyone."
"The unsub could be a victim," Asami began. "They've been dealing with memories of their abuse for years and finally snapped. From what we gathered all of our victims were seen interacting with children before being killed."
Hotchner nodded. "Iroh and Asami I need you to compile a list from all the girls that went through that youth center ten to fifteen years ago," he ordered. "Everyone else, I need you to deliver the profile to RCPD."
The team stood and I walked over to Korra. She lowered her gaze as she saw me approach and I sighed, shaking my head.
"Korra, I...I'm sorry for what I said the other day," I apologized.
She scoffed. "I guess now you know I haven't been sleeping around like you thought."
I deserved that.
Lin's POV
I didn't give a rats ass (no pun intended) that Unalaq had been murdered, but unfortunately one of my team members was the main suspect. For years the poor excuse of a man had tortured her, harassed her, and that made her a prime suspect though there was no evidence to link her to the crime scene. I had told Saikhan I'd conduct an investigation, one that would make sure my team was clean. The kid had thrown up when she'd seen Unalaq, plus Korra didn't strike me as the killing kind. She had been alone with him while in the cabins, she could have easily killed him then and gotten away with it. I knew she was clean.
But then there were other suspects. Hotch was the kid's boyfriend and he had gone through several setbacks caused by the former Northern Tribe leader. Then there was the Sato tech, Korra's best friend. Spirits know how much the older girl really knew about those years Korra had been under her uncle's roof. They too were suspects and I wanted to make sure they hadn't crossed the line.
"You wanted to see me, Chief?" the other tech asked as he came inside my office.
I nodded "Shut the door, and sit down," I instructed him. Once he did I took a deep breath. "I have an assignment for you. It is extremely delicate and confidential."
"What is it?"
"I need you to keep constant surveillance on Agent Morgan, Hotchner and...Sato."
"What?" Iroh asked clearly surprised.
"I need to clear them from Unalaq's murder and they all have training and motive," I explained. "I need you to look into their activities for the past week and follow them now."
"He was a pervert, why are you even wasting time on him? No one cares that he's dead."
"Maybe not," I agreed. "But it's still a crime and I need to get Saikhan off my agents. Can you do it or not?" The other techy reluctantly nodded his head. "Good now, go. And Agent Lynch?" He stopped and looked at me. "They can't know you're watching them."
Korra's POV
After filling in everyone on Unalaq's methods, I managed to get away. Now Howl knew. He knew why I'd been so hesitant to be with him, why I had such a hard time with our relationship. I never wanted him to know because a part of me was ashamed. I was used goods, what kind of a man could ever want me? I felt a kiss against my temple and I looked up at Mako and gave him a kiss. Mako was different from Howl, a lot different. My former partner was a traditional man, former military, and stubborn. If he would have known, he wouldn't have wanted me and I couldn't have taken that rejection. Even now that he knew I saw pity in his eyes, while in Mako I had found understanding.
We finally arrived at the Youth Center and I asked for April. The new Director told me she was in the gym, practicing. I went inside and smiled as I watched her do three pointers before grabbing the rebound and making a layup. I grabbed a ball and shot it, going in perfectly. Guess I still had game. She noticed me and smiled, coming over and giving me a hug.
"Heard you're going to be recruited for Republic City University women's basketball team," I told her.
She nodded before her head tilted to the side. "What are you doing here?" April asked. "I don't think you just came to congratulate me."
"Unalaq Morgan."
The teen shook her head, grabbing a ball. "I don't want to talk about that."
"Someone is killing people in this neighborhood," I began.
"So?"
"Well, because of certain evidence found at the crime scenes, we believe it's one of Unalaq's former victims," Mako explained.
Her eyes narrows before she looked at me. "You told him?"
"April, we need to figure out who's doing this."
"Then figure it out. Stop wasting your time talking to me."
"You're not a suspect, April," I told her. "We just need to find out who's doing this." She didn't say anything and I sighed. "Look, did Unalaq ever mention any special girls, girls closer to my age?"
"I can't help you," the teen answered.
"If we don't get a list of names, someone else could lose their life," my boyfriend tried. "Is that really what you want?"
"Let me explain something to you. I'm not going to tell you what someone confided in me."
I flinched, knowing the comment was directed towards me. "April, just give us some names and no one has to know about this."
"I'm not going to start my basketball career carrying that mess around," April replied. "I have nothing else to say."
I sighed and nodded. We were on our own. I turned around to leave and Mako wrapped an arm around my waist. Once we were outside he turned to face me, lifting my chin so I could meet his gaze.
"I'm worried," he told me.
I lowered my gaze. "I'm fine."
"No you're not." I sighed and he wrapped his arms around me. "I have a friend you can talk to," he began. "She's really good. Will you do that? For me?"
"You want me to see a shrink?" I mumbled into his shoulder. He chuckled and I smiled. "Because that went so well last time."
He pulled away, caressing my cheek, making me look at him. "Just try. Maybe you can find something that can help us with the case."
I took in a deep breath before nodding. "Alright, I'll go."
Hotch grinned and kissed me. Well here went round two of traumatic therapy.
Raava's POV
I smiled when I noticed a dark skinned woman waiting outside in the hall. Mako had told me a lot about her since she'd joined his team at the Bureau. It didn't take me long to figure out that he was attracted to her and when he came in asking for dating advice some time later, my suspicions were confirmed. When Hailey died, Toph Bei Fong had ordered Hotch to get a psych evaluation in order to return to his duties. We had been good friends since college and I had known his wife as well. He was devastated after what happened even if they had been having marital problems. The main purpose of our therapy was for me to make sure he wouldn't go rogue after killing Foyet, the man who murdered his wife. After a few sessions I cleared him but he still came by to talk to me.
When Korra returned to the city I encouraged him to see her and to ask her out on a date. When he did he asked for what to do in order not to make her uncomfortable since he had mentioned she had issues with men. Hotch never clarified why this was and I never questioned it. Their relationship seem to grow and I hadn't heard much from him until a few days ago. Unalaq Morgan, which happened to be not only her uncle but a serial killer and child molester had died. It was needless to say that input two and two together and knew the reason behind the call, he wanted me to talk to her, or rather the other way around.
"You must be Korra," I greeted, stretching my hand out to her.
She shook it and nodded her head. "And you're Raava."
"Mako's told me a lot about you," I continued as I led her inside my office.
"I hope not too much."
I chuckled at that, nodding my head. "Just enough to get through this session." I watched her as she looked around, fidgeting in her chair. She was nervous. "So what do you want to talk about?"
The agent tilted her head, raising a brow. "I can talk about anything I want?"
I smiled and nodded. "Anything."
"I...well...I'm working on a case right now," she began. "We think it's related to Unalaq, one of his victims."
"Why do you think that?"
"The words 'look at me' were found at all the crime scenes," Korra explained. "Even the one they found twenty minutes ago. It's something he used to say to them."
I hummed thoughtfully. "I'm guessing there's a long list of victims."
A nod. "We're trying to narrow it down, but we don't know how."
"That kind of anger makes itself known eventually," I began. "Years of abuse pile up and it can be unleashed in a number of ways. Some work out, others drink, and then there's the troublemakers. The person you are looking for may have a record with the law since a young age."
Korra lowered her gaze, biting her lip. "I have a record with the law," the agent whispered. "I got in fights with people because they used to pick on me. I was the youngest kid and they wanted to push me around. I wanted...control." She shook her head meeting my gaze. "So I should look for a juvy record. That shouldn't be too hard."
"Mako is worried about you," I told her when she stood. "I'm not going to force you to talk about something you don't want to but I want you to know you can always come to me."
She nodded her head before smiling. "Thank you and it was nice meeting you."
Well that hadn't gone too bad. She would be back. I knew she would.
Asami's POV
For the first time in months I was bored at work. Everyone had gone out to find leads but Iroh and I were stuck trying to get the names of Unalaq's victims. We had a list based on the ones that had come forward when his trial happened but none were near Korra's age. Ever since she'd found out Unalaq was dead she seemed to be withdrawing more into herself and I tried getting her to talk but she wouldn't budge. She kept saying she was okay but she didn't really look it. I took a deep breath as I continued to do my own research. Unalaq was a pervert that deserved to die, and I knew there were others like him.
I raised a brow when I noticed that all our 'victims' were actually child predators as well. Looked like I wasn't the only one trying to clean up the streets. There was a knock before the door opened and I closed all the windows of my personal research just leaving the ones with my recent findings up.
"'Sami, just the person I've been looking for since Big Brother can't help me out," Korra said as she sat down.
I frowned. "What's he doing?" I asked before looking over at his office. His blinds were drawn. She shrugged and I sighed. "So how can I help you?"
"I've been thinking of some girls around my age or older that used to get in trouble with the law," Korra replied. "Can you check if they're connected with our victims?"
"They aren't victims, they're perverts. This person is just doing everyone a favor."
"What do you mean?" I turned the screen so she could see what I'd found and she hummed in response. "These kind of unsubs devolve. Right now it's just child molester's, she can kill an innocent."
I let out an irritated sigh but nodded. "Give me the names."
"Judy Sloan, Patricia Holmes, Diana Brooke..." My best friend stopped and I looked over at her, and I could tell by the expression on her face she had just had an epiphany of sorts. "June Harris."
"June Harris?" I repeated. What did her high school bully have to do with anything?
"Yeah, her and I got into fights all the time, she's the main reason for my juvy record," Korra answered. "She was always getting in trouble, maybe...check if she has links to any of the men."
I nodded and typed in a few commands before something popped up. I blinked. Looked like Korra was right.
"There's definitely a connection," I told her. "June has an estranged daughter who lives with her aunt due to June's narcotics record. Our first guy Michael Crowley was accused of molesting her after a swim practice. He was her coach."
"I need an address," Korra said as she stood.
I nodded and tracked her cellphone. "She's at her sister's house."
"I'll tell the team." And just like that she was out the door.
I huffed before looking over at Iroh's office again. What was he doing? I typed in a few commands, secretly hacking him and pulling up what was on his screen. I frowned when I noticed he had eyes on Korra, Mako and I. My jaw clenched when I realized what he was doing. Lin had told him to spy on us. I let out a frustrated growl as I pulled up the target I had chosen. Looked like Carl Beuford would stay alive. For now.
Mako's POV
Korra filled the team in on who was our possible unsub and we headed out. I place a hand over hers as we drove and she managed a smile as we parked. The police department arrived with us and we got out, putting our bulletproof vests on. I looked towards the window and saw who I presumed was June Harris, holding a man in front of her, gun against his head. This looked like it was going to be fun. Korra took a deep breath before she started to walk towards the house. I ordered Rossi and Howl to go through the back as I followed my girlfriend.
"June, drop it," Korra said as we went inside.
"I'm protecting my daughter from people like him!" The woman shouted.
"He's never hurt Sarah!" the other woman answered as she held a startled pre-teen. "He's been my boyfriend for five years and he's never hurt her!"
"June, I know that this isn't about your daughter, it's about what happened to you," I said.
Our suspect seemed taken aback by this. "What?"
"Unalaq Morgan. We know what he did to you," I clarified.
Her jaw clenched at this and she shook her head. "You don't know what I've been through. So back off or I will kill him."
"June, you can't keep killing people," Korra began. "What happened to your daughter was wrong. But it brought you back to what Unalaq did to you, didn't it?" Harris didn't answer and Korra prepared herself. "Look, I know what you're feeling. I've been there."
"How I'm feeling?" June asked. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"He molested me too." Her attention went to Korra and I watched as my girlfriend put the gun away. What was she doing? She raised her hands and approached June. "He took advantage of me too."
"You were his niece."
My girlfriend flinched and nodded. "That didn't matter to him."
"June, look at your daughter," I tried. The woman reluctantly did as she was told and I saw the girl's pleading eyes. "Don't go out like this in front of her. You don't want to destroy her life too, do you? She loves you."
"I do, Mom," the girl, Sarah, whispered.
"Put the gun down, please," Korra pleaded. "Let him go. Let it go."
June closed her eyes tightly, tears falling before she pushed the man away and she fell to her knees, dropping the gun. Her daughter ran to her and I retrieved the weapon before looking up and over at Korra. There were so many emotions swirling in her eyes. Sadness, happiness, comfort. I placed a hand on June's shoulder and she nodded, asking her daughter to let go as I put the cuffs on her and I led her out the door, Korra behind me.
Korra's POV
"You're saying that's why June Harris killed those men?" the reporter asked.
"Yes, that's what I said," Lin answered.
"So being abused made her a killer?"
"No. No, it did not," I replied. "The vast majority of child sex victims don't grow up to be sex offenders or criminals. I know this because...and let me be direct..."
I took in a deep breath, bracing myself. For years I had kept this secret, people, so many people in the dark. But it was time for me to say it out loud, to try and let it go. Unalaq was dead. He couldn't hurt me anymore. They had to know. They had to know that abuse doesn't equal a cycle. It can equal change.
"I was also one of Unalaq Morgan's victims. Victimization does not cause offending. It can cause a lot of isolation... There can be anger and rage. It can cause pain and suffering..." I sighed. "But you can get through it. It can make you stronger. It does not have to destroy your life. It can make you fight back. And it can make you want to spend the rest of your life protecting others."
Raava turned off the television and I wiped away a tear that escaped. That press conference had happened an hour ago. It was all over the news, probably would be for a couple of days. Mako had immediately gone to my side, pulling me away from the flashing cameras and reporters with a million questions. I had asked him to drive me here and he had, telling me he would wait in the car. I looked up to meet my new therapist's blue gaze.
When I had first met Raava I had to admit that the first thing that stuck out to me was how pretty she was, she didn't look like a therapist at all. Her sandy blonde hair was tied in a messy bun, she had a grey power suit, a black button up dress shirt underneath the jacket. Her demeanor was soothing yet...somewhat controlling. Her presence commanded attention, yet at the same time she seemed like she didn't want to be noticed. She had to be in her later thirties, and if it was true she had gone to school with Hotch.
"How do you feel now that Unalaq is gone?" she finally asked.
I blinked at that. Was she serious? "How do you think I feel? I'm relieved, I'm happy, I'm...at peace. He haunted me for nearly twenty years."
"Did you want him to die?"
I scoffed. "What kind of a question is that?"
"Indulge me," Raava answered with a shrug, like the answer didn't matter to her one way or the other. She just seemed to be making easy conversation. "Can you answer my question?"
"Of course I wanted him to die!" I replied. "He-he'd molested me since I was nine years old. He beat me the moment I set foot into his house." I felt my breathing quicken as I continued. "Do you have any idea how terrified I was to go to sleep? How scared I was when he got into my her and night and told me to be quiet as he touched me? Yes I'm glad the bastard is gone...I wanted him to die...I wanted...I wanted..."
"What did you want, Korra?" Her voice was soothing, calm, gentle.
I closed my eyes, my hands griping my short hair as I tried to regulate my breathing. There was a thought that had crossed my mind once, one that terrified me.
"I thought about killing him," I finally admitted quietly. "I had the chance. He was unarmed, standing in front of me. I could've claimed self defense. My finger was over the trigger and I...I...couldn't."
"Why?"
I swallowed thickly. "Because if I killed him. If I fired my gun...I would be no better than he was." I leaned against my chair, taking a few puffs from my inhaler. "That's why I don't want to talk about him being dead. Because...that thought scared me..."
"You were scared to take a life. That's natural."
"I shouldn't have been scared to take his."
"I've seen your record, Agent Morgan. You've taken two lives in your entire career," Raava began. "One because the suspect made a move to shoot bystanders and the other when he tried shooting at your partner. You don't take lives unless you have to." She placed her hand over mine. "That isn't a bad thing."
"You know, if people had known the truth about me, it would have been different," I began. "I wouldn't get looked down on when I went into the clinic to get on birth control. My classmates wouldn't have bullied me for being so smart. Being smart was my ticket out. I wanted to protect myself, he said he fixed himself but..." I shook my head. "He was a sick monster. I wanted to protect myself."
"Korra, you were a baby when his happened to you. A child," she continued soothingly. "I'm not saying your trauma will go away but I can help you put it behind you. Help you move on, though it seems you've been managing by yourself."
I let out a small laugh, knowing who she was referring to. But it had taken me so long, it had been such a bumpy road so that Mako and I could be together. I was the happiest I had ever been.
"Hotch was patient. He let me lead, he was gentle, he didn't rush me," I replied with a smile. "I love him. I'm comfortable with him but men...they're still a problem for me."
"I can help you if you let me," Raava offered."
I nodded my head. "I'd like that. I know I've needed this but...I didn't want anyone to know. It makes me feel vulnerable and that wasn't an option when I was younger."
"The press conference you gave was very brave of you to do. It's a step to healing."
I sighed before checking the time. "I should get going. You must have other people coming in."
Raava stood with me. "Come by whenever you want."
I assured her I would and I left the office, putting my jacket on. I spotted Mako at the coffee shop across the street and I smiled, shaking my head before I heard my phone ring. I raised a brow but answered.
"Hey, Big Brother," I greeted as I watched my boyfriend head back to the car.
My blood ran cold and the phone fell from my hand as I shouted at Hotch. He turned, brow scrunched in confusion.
"There's a bomb under the car!" I shouted.
His arms wrapped around me as I reached him and there was a loud explosion, knocking us to the ground. Then...nothing.
