Thorin stepped into the white mist. A warm feeling filling him. A feeling of home. Of belonging. The Maiar had led him here at last. After a long, long life.

The mist emptied into the wide, blue ocean, which he followed until he reached the pure, white shores. A small group waited for him upon the sand. A smile slipped onto his face as he saw faces of old friends. Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, His brother Frerin… His son Erun… The shoulder high lad beamed at his father who waded out of the water. His friends and family surrounded him, all beaming and laughing, playfully rubbing his head like they had used to.

"Da! You made it!" Erun laughed happily.

"We all knew I'd get here eventually." Thorin laughed.

"Aye." Balin nodded. "We all did. Come, she lost track of time listening to the elves' tales again. I'm sure she'll want to see you."

Thorin's smile disappeared as he was led up to white buildings overlooking the ocean. Gentle music played on the wind, it was not elvish, nor dwarvish, nor any type of music specifically. It was just music. And it was calming. His friends led Thorin to one of the rooms were a few elves played merrily upon harps and flutes and such things.

And there, off to one side, swaying her head in appreciation to the gentle lullaby, was a dark haired hobbit.

"Emi…" the name escaped his lips. At the sound, the hobbit turned in surprise, her face lighting up in recognition.

"Thorin!" she laughed, rising and crossing over to him. "You got old!" she smirked at his full head of gray hair. His beard too was so long, it had to be tucked into his belt to keep from walking on it.

"Trust you to escape the effects of age and time." Thorin smiled back. Emi laughed and pulled him into a welcoming hug.

"And trust you to make snide comments even on such a happy occasion." The hobbit released him and stepped back, a smile still wide across her face. "I met your son some time ago." She nodded at young Erun. "A fine lad. I heard you named your daughter after me?"

"It was Luin's idea." Thorin sighed.

"You're wife." Emi smiled. "She's doing well, I hope?"

"She's rather sad at present." Thorin nodded. "But in good health. She's the best queen I could have asked for. Though I could never love her as much as you."

Emi laughed merrily. "Thorin, we both know that's not true." Thorin raised an eyebrow. "It's okay to love her. Just as I loved you."

Thorin nodded quietly. "Yes. It was a misfortune that you chose to fall in love with me. You deserved better."

Emi rolled her eyes before stepping up to Thorin again and cupped a wrinkling cheek in one hand. "I don't regret what I did. Not for a moment have I ever regretted saving your life."

"Not once?" Thorin asked.

"Not ever." Emi shook her head. "You've done wonderful things with the life you were given, more than I ever could."

"I'm certain that's not true." The dwarf shook his head.

"Well I am." Emi laughed, turning away again. "Besides, It's even better than Hobbiton here. There's more food."

Thorin frowned. "You still eat? I thought we were dead."

"Well you don't have to eat." Emi rolled her eyes, padding out of the room as Thorin followed. "But it really is very good. Azog makes the most delicious mushroom stew."

Thorin froze. "What?"

"That's what I thought at first!" Emi nodded. "I thought he would be a horrible cook, there being no meat or anything, but he really has quite the talent."

"What is Azog doing here?" Thorin growled.

Emi only laughed. "Well where did you think all the orcs went?" she turned to him merrily. "They were once elves too."

Thorin continued to frown.

"Oh lighten up, will you?" she punched him lightly on the arm. "Fili and I had a bet on whether or not your face would get stuck like that permanently, and I really don't want to loose."

Thorin shook his head and sighed before letting out a small chuckle. "All these years and you haven't changed a bit."

Emi smiled back. "No one really changes. Not forever." A small smile slipped onto Thorin's face. "Now, could I interest you in some old toby?"

"Aye, you could."

And the two of them walked.

Till the end of their days.

The road goes ever, ever on
To the lands beyond the sea.
On a white ship will I sail,
Watching shadows part for me.

It's so easy not to try;
Let the world go drifting by.
If you never say hello,
You won't have to say goodbye.

If you never say hello,

You won't have to say goodbye.

The End.
