"A baby is God's opinion that life should go on." - Carl Sandburg

Korra's POV

I took another puff from my inhaler as I tried to process what was happening.

I was pregnant.

The freaking stick had turned blue.

Just about a month ago I had started feeling sick, throwing up when I had certain foods and at first I thought it was the stomach bug that was going around. Iroh'd had it so I figured I had gotten it from him. But when it still persisted and after a long night with Mako...I had started to put two and two together. Now looking at the stick sitting on the sink I couldn't help but feel utterly stupid for not figuring it out sooner. I mean...I had gone off the pill and we'd been very proactive in that area of our marriage.

I felt my chest constrict as I thought about what this meant. I was going to be a mom. The mere thought seemed so unreal, I mean... I couldn't see myself as a mother. But then again I didn't think I'd ever be happily married either. I sighed as I wrapped an arm around my midsection. Mako would be ecstatic at the news and I wanted to tell him but... I didn't know how I felt about this. A baby was a huge responsibility and I knew I wouldn't be able to do my job like I did now. I'd have to take time off and I loved my job.

I jumped when there was a knock on the door. "You ready to go?" Mako asked.

"Just a minute," I answered as I stood up.

I placed the stick inside its packaging, wrapping it in a bag and throwing it in the trash. I flushed the toilet, washing my hands and trying to take deep breaths to calm myself. When I was sure I wouldn't have another asthma episode I opened the door and smiled at my husband, giving him a kiss.

"Are you still feeling sick?" he asked with concern as he held my hand. "Maybe we should see the doctor."

"I'm fine," I lied.

He sighed and I took a deep breath. Pregnant, I was pregnant. Why couldn't it just be the stomach bug?

Asami's POV

I wasn't disappointed on my first day back. There had been a murder of a soon-to-be bride in a chapel at the edge of the city. According to witnesses, when the bride made her way through the double doors her dress was already stained red and she was bleeding from her neck. She died shortly after.

Korra and I went inside where she had been getting ready and saw the arterial blood stains sprayed everywhere, even on the ceiling. We noticed two pairs of clothing and a pair of shoes that seemed to be that of a bridesmaid but the groom had said his girlfriend, Anya, didn't have any close friends or relatives. However, after looking through the victim's purse we had found evidence otherwise and decided to bring him in for questioning.

"Why did you lie to us?" I asked showing him the picture of the victim and another woman. "Who is she?"

The groom sighed and took the picture. "That's Leia, Anya's younger sister," he answered quietly. "I didn't want you to think she had something to do with all this."

"How could you be so sure?" Korra asked. "Running from the scene doesn't exactly scream 'innocent.'"

"Someone was after them," the man explained. "I don't know who, but I think they were gang members. Anya used to have...clients. Her family was very poor and she had to resort to drastic measures."

"You knew and you were still willing to marry her?" I asked.

He nodded. "I loved her."

I huffed but nodded. "We're going to do everything we can to find who did this," I told him, letting him go.

Korra waited till he was outside the room before turning to look at me. "You aren't going to tell him she was pregnant?"

In addition to the picture we'd also found a positive birth control test in its box inside her purse. She must have wanted to surprise him on their wedding day. I shook my head.

"They're sometimes wrong," I explained seeing her eyes light up slightly. I tilted my head, studying her, wondering what that was about. "I'd rather wait for the coroner's exam."

Korra nodded and I saw her take a deep breath. What was that about?

Mako's POV

After the groom's comment about Anya's affiliation with gang members, Howl and I went to go see what we could find out. It was awkward to say the least driving together to the Dragon Flatts, the part of town we knew mob leaders tended to slither out of their holes. We had never really looked each other in the eye but seeing as I was married to Korra and he hadn't tried anything funny lately, I decided it was time we tried to get along.

I could see that he was surprised when I invited him along but I didn't want to take Korra to this side of town and she had excused herself to go to the doctor. I'd been telling her to go so that she could get some medication for the stomach bug she'd caught and it was about time she listened. Still stubborn as ever.

"So where are we going to look for this guy, exactly?" the Southern Tribe detective asked when I parked.

The was to be groom had given us a name during the interrogation. "Where do men like spending their Friday nights?" I asked heading towards our destination. "A bar."

We went inside and I showed Howl a picture of our person of interest on my phone, a mobster named Viper. He was suspected of over a dozen mob kills but no one could ever prove he had ordered the hit. I only hoped he was responsible for this woman's death so I could finally throw him a jail cell. Lightning Bolt Zolt ran the mobs on this side but Viper was his right hand man, took care of the deals and the kills. But the idiot had two vices: alcohol and women. This is why I wasn't surprised when I caught him in the corner of the bar, four girls with him.

Howl took out his badge and I did the same. The man rolled his eyes and asked the women to leave, grabbing his drink and taking a sip. Well at least it seemed he would be cooperating this time.

"How can I help you two gentlemen?" he asked.

I showed him the picture of our victim. "Recognize her?" A nod. "Well she's dead, and guess who's on the suspect list.

The blue eyed mobster scoffed. "Me? I haven't seen that girl in ages."

"Really?" Howl asked. "Because her phone records say otherwise."

Viper huffed, taking another drink. "So I called her a couple of times. What is it to you?"

"She's dead and you don't have a very good record," I reminded him. "Either you cooperate or I can assure you, you'll go down for this."

The man scowled at that before digging into his coat and tossing me a CD. I took out an evidence bag and placed it inside, gesturing to it. "I was blackmailing her, okay?" Viper admitted. "I told her I'd show her husband what kind of girl she was. We were supposed to meet today but she didn't show."

"And you just dropped it?"

A scoff. "No. I sent Shady Shin to make a scene but when he got there the cops were all around and he came back."

"Where can we find this Shady Shin?" the detective asked.

"He's on vacation," Viper answered with a smirk. "I'll let him know you're looking for him."

My eyes narrowed. He was involved. I gestured to Howl to leave and he reluctantly did so. He knew what I did as well. Shady Shin was dead.

Korra's POV

I paced back and forth in my living room, waiting for Asami to arrive as I occasionally took puffs from my inhaler. Earlier in the day I had gotten the slightest bit of hope I wasn't expecting a kid and it felt if some big weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I decided to go see the doctor and told him my symptoms hoping he'd dismiss them as a stomach bug or just me being worried about getting pregnant. Instead he wanted to have ultrasound because it was the fastest way to find out. I agreed to it but when the scanner moved around my torso a sound was heard which I immediately realized it was a heartbeat. The doctor congratulated me and printed out a picture for me to keep and all the while I felt as if the air had been knocked out of me.

I was going to have a baby.

There was a knock on the door and I went over, opening it to find my best friend. I quickly hugged her and she returned the embrace, holding me tightly. I needed some assurance. I needed someone to tell me it was going to be okay, that I shouldn't be freaking out.

"Korra what is it?" she asked. "What's wrong?

I pulled back and swallowed thickly. "I'm pregnant."

Asami blinked before a wide grin spread across her face. I stayed frozen in place and she pulled back, her brow furrowed as she studied me.

"Hey, is everything alright?"

I lowered my gaze. "I can't believe I'm pregnant."

She took my hand, leading me to the couch. We sat down and I leaned back, thinking, really thinking about what this meant. I was pregnant. I was going to have a kid. I felt my chest constrict.

"Korra," she began carefully, her hand holding mine. "Is this what you want?"

I closed my eyes tightly. "Mako and I talked about the possibility a few months ago," I replied quietly. "He-he wanted to have a baby and I wasn't sure but I agreed to try." I bit my lip looking up at her. "I'm not ready to be a mom, 'Sami."

My best friend pulled me close to her and I rested my head against her shoulder. The mere thought of being a mom scared me. I was afraid of what it meant, of the responsibility it came with the title, but most importantly that I wouldn't be a good mother.

"I don't think anyone is born ready," Asami replied, running her hand through my hair soothingly. "It's just something you learn. Plus you've had plenty of practice with Henry and Jack."

"But I-"

"No buts. You're going to be great." A pause. "Have you told Mako yet?"

I shook my head. "I don't know how to. I mean… I'm scared. I don't know what to think about this…"

"He's been through a pregnancy and so have I," she persisted, pressing a kiss on my hair. "You won't be alone. But he needs to know."

I sighed and reluctantly nodded. How was I supposed to tell him?

Howl's POV

I watched as Korra looked over the case pictures and files on the board. She had been staring at it since we got in today and it was starting to get a little creepy, but I knew that's how she worked. When we were in the South Pole she would do the same thing, hardly leaving the office only to shower and change. Everyone used to tease her about it, telling her she should change her mailing address to headquarters. I took a deep breath as I, myself, went over the information one more time. Mako and I had come to the conclusion that Shady Shin was dead and that Viper was definitely involved. The only thing was we didn't know how to connect him to all of this.

My former partner's head tilted to the side and she pulled out her phone. I raised a brow when I heard her ask the coroner to look at her scalp and then to run a rape kit. She then left the office and later came back with her best friend who brought along her laptop.

"Howl, do you remember when we were in the South Pole and we found about half a dozen women with their throats slit?"

I frowned but nodded, vaguely remembering the case. "Yeah, sort of?"

"Well they all had a 'K' branded on their scalp and had been raped," she explained. "So was our victim."

"Sex trafficking," I concluded.

Korra nodded. "Yes."

Soon enough the rest of the team was in the conference room trying to figure out how to go about this. Now we had a link between cases but the South Pole case had never been solved. We only found a partial print and a vague description of who could be our unsub.

"Did this Viper guy touch that DVD?" my former partner asked her husband.

He nodded and she hummed thoughtfully before handing it to a crime scene examiner to get prints off of. A couple of hours later he came back and handed her a piece of paper.

"Our cutthroat guy and Viper are one and the same," Korra announced to the team.

I blinked. "How do you…?"

"I ran the partial print we got from the files the South Pole faxed over and the ones off the DVD. It was a match." She shook her head. "It was just a hunch."

"Well that hunch is going to let us pay Viper another visit," Hotch answered. She always did have a hell of a sixth sense. "Gear up."

Minutes later we were at Viper's known address. We asked him to open up but when he didn't I knocked the door down and we went inside. The guy had a expensive taste that much was obvious. Soon we cleared the scene, or at least that's what we thought, when Korra called us. Towards the end of the house there was a locked door and we moved aside to have SWAT take care of it. Once we were able to go inside Hotch led, followed by me and I put my gun away when we reached the bottom. There were over a dozen girls on different mattresses. Some were awake and the others obviously drugged. Korra knelt down next to one of them, soothing the girl as she gently moved her hair to the side to reveal a 'K' the same as our victim and the ones in the South Pole.

"Leia isn't here," our team member announced after a moment.

My former partner and I shared a look. We needed to find her and fast, before she ended up like her sister.

Mako's POV

After finding a group of girls, we immediately went to work trying to find Leia. One of the victims was fully conscious and she told us that she had known Leia and Anya and that the younger sister was to be sold to the highest bidder that same night. However, she did not know where the bidding would take place and we were running out of time.

I paced back and forth trying to think of places where the auction would take place but I was coming up empty. Korra continued to stare at the board, trying to see if she could have another epiphany while her former partner did the same. The two techs were looking everywhere online to see if there was an ad but found nothing.

"I know where the auction is taking place," Iroh cried, causing us to focus on him.

I raised a brow. "You do?"

"Yes," he replied sitting down with this laptop. "We've been looking for some sort of auction but the one thing that I kept seeing advertised was this."

Our tech analyst pulled up a flyer for a club opening tonight in the Dragon Flatts. But that wasn't what got my attention. Under the big opening letters there was a 'Special Event' to follow at midnight for V.I.P members only.

"Looks like you're right. I'll get SWAT on it."

"No," Korra said, stopping me. "We need to be smart about this. Iroh do you have a fancy suit?"

He frowned but nodded. "Yeah?"

"Get it. I'll explain the rest on the way."

I let out a sigh as we hit yet another bump on the way to the club opening. My wife decided that we could do part of the raid undercover so as not to alert Viper and risk losing Leia again. We were in the trunk and Iroh was driving, seeming to be one of the V.I.P members. I felt Korra give me a kiss and I smiled wrapping my arms around her. Soon enough the car came to a stop and the trunk opened. About time.

"Was I right about the password?" she asked.

He nodded. "Cutthroat."

Once inside we heard voices and looked behind a curtain spotting Leia. The bidding price started at fifty thousand dollars. I let out a disgusted sound before going inside and asking SWAT to move in.

"F.B.I. drop your weapon!" I ordered.

Viper immediately grabbed Leia, bringing the knife that he probably used to kill Anya against her throat, threatening us that if we came any closer he'd kill her. Korra stepped forward, her eyes set on the target and she tilted her head to the side. I didn't realize was she was doing until Leia jerked away and my wife fired three shots.

The mobster groaned as he hit the ground and I kicked away the knife, asking paramedics to come inside. Non-lethal hits as usual. One brushed his shoulder, another hit his arm and the third hit him in the torso. If he was taken care of he'd live to be present in his hearing. I looked up to see Korra soothing Leia and she looked over at me, relief reflected in her blue eyes.

A few hours later we were able to go home and despite the case being over I could tell there was something off about my wife. She hadn't really been herself these past couple of days and I had tried to talk to her about but she kept saying she was fine.

We arrived home and Jessica let us know that Jack was asleep and to not hesitate to call her if we needed her again soon. Korra and I went inside his room to give him his goodnight kiss and she wrapped her arms around me, resting her head against my shoulder. I smiled at that and led her into our room, changing into my night clothes as she did the same.

When I finished I looked up to see her nervously wringing her hands together. I frowned. Was there something wrong?

"Korra are you-"

"I'm pregnant," she revealed.

I blinked, taking a moment to process. I could feel the excitement building up inside of me, and I wanted to grab Korra and hug her and just twirl her around the room. But I restrained myself.

Though Korra was trying her best to smile and seem excited, her happiness was a thin veil for the anxiety and uncertainty I could see brewing in those beautiful cobalt orbs.

So instead of acting on impulse, I smiled at her, and brought her close, kissing the top of her head before tilting her chin up and bringing her lips to mine. "I love you. And we will do this how we do everything. You and me." I grinned. "And our crazy extended family." Because Spirits knew Asami would be front and center for this.

Korra's smile was more genuine this time, and she seemed to relax. "I love you too."

Asami's POV

My hand gripped the steering wheel of my car until my knuckles turned white as I waited for the scumbag to come staggering out of the bar. For the past couple weeks I'd been confined to my home and had been getting restless, irritated. While I was trapped under my husband's watchful eye the streets were crawling with perverted insects. It was driving me insane thinking about it.

Tonight I'd finally managed to get Iroh to let me go to the gym. I'd made sure he was no longer spying on us, of course. But it seemed that the Chief's investigation was done. And I was free to play.

My phone vibrated and I looked down to see it was a message from Korra. She had told Hotch about being pregnant and he was ecstatic about the news. I managed a smile. My best friend was going to have a baby. Soon there would be a mini her walking around and the mere thought of it seemed so...unreal. Just a year ago she had mentioned not wanting any children and now...

I answered that I was happy for her just as the pervert came out of the bar, obviously drunk, and turned to go down the alley.

I pulled out my gun from the glove compartment and left my phone on the seat before getting out and following him. There would only be one person coming out of this alley and it wasn't going to be him.
