"Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. Let's not be afraid to receive each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity."-Henri Nouwen
Mako's POV
I sighed as I watched Korra play with her lunch while looking over our recent case. Ever since Asami left my wife hadn't been the same, moping whenever she was alone. I knew the separation was hard on her. Korra had cried almost all night and I had tried to soothe her as much as I could. The only time I'd see her truly happy was whenever she was with Jack and Becca.
I went over and wrapped an arm around her waist. She leaned her head against my shoulder and I kissed the top of her head. I had tried to be supportive, knowing that despite what had happened they were family. I was still upset about what had happened but seeing Korra...I had to do what I could to at least make her smile.
"Your mom says Becca's been asking for you," I said after a moment.
Her lips twitched into a smile and she looked up at me. "Really?"
"Mmhmm. Maybe we should talk to her for a bit."
She nodded her head and I stood to borrow Iroh's laptop. Becca had been babbling a few words but Ma, Da, and Ak were her favorites so far. It had taken us a while to figure out that Ak was Jack.
I turned on the webcam and a few moments later we were able to see Jessica and Senna. My mother-in-law was holding my daughter's hands above her head as she took a few steps forward. Korra smiled and kissed my cheek, cooing at our little girl.
This was my favorite version of Korra.
Raava's POV
I gave the raven haired woman a hug before asking her to sit down. She had been away for three months, her contact with other people limited to her child only. Tenzin had commented that at first the change had been hard for the tech expert, especially only being able to use a phone at night when she read Henry a bedtime story.
Shortly after our conversation I had gotten in contact with her therapist wanting to keep track of her progress, at her approval. She certainly did seem different, more like the woman I had heard about before everything had happened.
Asami seemed excited to be able to be with her family and friends again. She had been away for some time. I asked about how she felt and she assured me she was much better, she hadn't had any nightmares in a month and what had seemed to be withdrawal symptoms had disappeared long ago. It truly seemed that Asami was much better.
She asked about Korra and I assured her the younger agent was fine, if a little lonely. Hotch had told me his wife seemed a little sad at time but it was understandable. She missed her best friend.
"I've had time to realize a couple of things while I was away," Asami began after a moment.
I hummed thoughtfully, crossing a leg over the other. "Really, like what?"
"I think...I think Iroh is the love of my life."
"But." There was obviously more.
"But Korra...she's my soul mate," she finished. "And I'll never stop loving her. Even if she only sees me as a friend. That's better than not having any part of her."
"Is that fair to Iroh?" I asked.
She shook her head. "No. But I refuse to put Henry through the trials of divorce and having to visit one parent only every other weekend or some other crap. My son, he deserves a lot better than that."
I sighed. Many times I had seen couples try to stay together for their children and it might've worked for a little but but that peace didn't last. However, I knew she loved her husband. Her love was not as strong as the one she had for the brunette but it was enough for her to want to be with him. I didn't think it was fair for the military man but it was not my decision to make.
"...What about your feelings toward Becca?" I questioned after a moment.
Asami smiled at that. "She's still sweet, and precious, and...looks just like her mother. A hint of Mako."
"How do you feel about that?"
I had gone to visit her once when she had just set foot on the island and she had revealed that at first it had been hard being around the child. She was a reminder of what could have been and whenever she saw her, she'd think about the possibilities. About the what if.
"I've... She'll be a very special little girl," she said. "And she'll be loved more fiercely than she could ever dream. By Korra, and her family, by the team, and by me."
I smiled and nodded at her, reaching out to place a hand over hers. "Welcome back, Asami."
Asami's POV
I smiled and waved as I spotted Iroh and Henry.
After getting the clear from both Tenzin and Raava I had called my husband and told him I was coming back to the city and we needed to talk. He had agreed and I had asked a cabbie to drive me to the station, pretending to have just gotten off the ferry. My little boy came running and I lifted him up, bathing him in kisses and holding him tightly. Iroh continued his stride until he was in front of me.
"Hey."
I smiled. "Hi."
"You look...you look great," he commented fumbling with his words.
I smiled and stepped closer to him, running my hand through his short hair before leaning forward to kiss him. My husband eagerly returned the gesture, his hand cupping my cheek. When we pulled away slightly out of breath he gave me another, sweeter kiss and I grinned at him.
"I missed you."
"I know," I answered apologetically. I took a deep breath, shaking my head. "I know I wasn't completely honest with you but it's just..." I sighed. "The job just became too much and I couldn't be here. Can you forgive me?"
He grinned and nodded, capturing my lips again and I smiled, growling playfully when he pulled back. My husband grabbed my bags and Henry pressed his face against my neck causing me to smile. Moments later he pulled up at headquarters and I took a deep death before getting out the car, my husband getting our son.
Last week I had let Lin know I was coming back and if there was any way to get my job back. Surprisingly she didn't have a problem with it but asked that I report today. I went inside and Iroh led me to the conference room.
I felt my heart skip a beat when I spotted a pair of sapphire eyes and she immediately ran towards me. She slammed into me and I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tightly, her shoulders shaking with restraint. I blinked back a few tears as I continued to hold her, thanking the Spirits for letting me see her again. After a moment she pulled back, wiping away her tears and greeting the rest of the team.
This was home.
Korra's POV
Words couldn't describe how happy I was to have my best friend back. She had been away for three very long months. Lin had informed us of her arrival and I had organized a little something for her return. I stepped back because I knew the others wanted to welcome her back too, going to my husband's side. He gave my best friend a nod and welcomed her back and I smiled up at him which he returned before giving me a chaste kiss.
Soon after things fell back into place and it almost seemed like she had never left. Almost. There was always that witty remark whenever we called that we missed and then her expertise which helped a lot during cases. Especially for the woman that turned her victims into dolls, though I had pretty much cracked that one on my own.
Now, a few months later we were celebrating Becca's first birthday and the entire team had taken the day off to come spend time with her at the park. She was already walking and hard to keep track of though Jack did a really good job. She almost knew everyone's name, well her version of it anyway. Osi (Rossi), In (Lin), Ow (Howl), Ami (Asami), Io (Iroh), Eny (Henry), Es (Jessica) and there was Ama (grandma) and Apa (grandpa).
"Where are you?" Iroh asked putting his phone on speaker.
"Close by. Are you going to talk dirty to me?"
I rolled my eyes and he chuckled. "Babe, you're on speaker."
"I charge extra for groups." I could practically see the grin on her face.
"And here I thought the excessive flirting had stopped," I said loudly so she could hear me. "Hurry up the food is going to get cold."
"I'm right here!" she cried walking over to us and hanging up her phone. "Sorry I'm late, had to pick up a last minute gift."
I frowned. "Where is it?"
"You'll see it when you get home. But I'll give you a hint. Becca just got her first set of wheels."
I sighed and went over to my mom who was starting to serve the food, asking where Becca was. She looked over at my dad and I smiled, holding out my hands for my little girl, feeling an arm wrap around my waist. I gave Mako a chaste kiss, going to sit down when all our phones started to ring. I groaned, sharing a look of exasperation with the raven haired tech.
Seriously?
I sighed. The perks of this job.
