The Impossible Possibilities of Love
Chapter 8
Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha or associated characters, but that baby is mine!
Inuyasha grabbed Kagome's hand, pulling her up and dragging her beside him as he pushed Kai's stroller towards his family. His mother stood in front, hands on her hips, giving him her famous glare. She wore a dark pink summer dress and strappy sandals with half her hair pinned up and the rest flowing free down her back and shoulders. Her bangs were swept to the side and her light brown eyes held fire in them.
Inuyasha noticed his sister, Rin, standing next to his mother with a grin on her face. He would talk with her later about those shorts and revealing green tank she was wearing. Inuyasha's father stood to his mother's other side, but slightly behind. He noticed his father's shoulders shaking slightly and knew the old man was holding back a laugh at his expense.
Thankfully, he noticed Sesshomaru wasn't there. He'd have a field day watching their mother light into Inuyasha.
"That's your mother?" Kagome asked on a whisper as they neared the group. Her eyes darted around to find Sango and Miroku, but they had magically disappeared.
"Yeah." Inuyasha quickly answered as they stopped in front of his mother. Kagome couldn't help but admire the older woman's sense of style as her light brown eyes came to rest on Kagome. The anger disappeared instantly as she pulled Kagome into a motherly hug.
"It's so nice to finally meet you sweetie!" Izayoi squealed as she released Kagome and held her at arm's length. Kagome blushed slightly at the affection and scrutiny she was receiving from a complete stranger.
"Mom…." Inuyasha pleaded as his mother continued her very obvious perusal of Kagome. Izayoi suddenly burst into a bright smile and hugged Kagome once more before letting her go.
"Yes, I do believe you will fit in rather nicely dear." Izayoi turned towards her son and the fire immediately went back into her eyes. "And you know better than to ignore my calls. How dare you try to keep my future grandchild away from me?!"
Izayoi proceeded to push Inuyasha away from the baby stroller and began walking away with Rin in tow, laughing hysterically. "You two go enjoy yourselves and meet us at the show grounds in an hour! Eat, play games, make another pretty baby for me to spoil. Taisho, move your ass."
Inuyasha's father gave Kagome an apologetic smile and began to follow his wife and daughter, leaving a shocked Inuyasha and a bewildered Kagome standing there.
"D-Did she just steal my baby?" Kagome asked, still staring after Izayoi's disappearing frame. Under normal circumstances she would have been raising all sorts of hell that God himself couldn't stop. But somewhere deep in her, she knew Kai was safe and sound right where he was.
"Yeah….she did. He'll be okay, I promise, but if you want we can go take him back." Inuyasha swallowed and gave Kagome a sheepish grin. "Well, we can try to take him back."
Kagome found herself laughing and shook her head. "No, it's okay. It's just a bit to take in. Your mother is so…." Inuyasha nodded and laughed. He knew just what Kagome meant. "I guess we go play games then."
Inuyasha smiled at her and grabbed her hand, leading her towards a row of games. He settled for shooting little plastic ducks while Kagome went for something more simple − basketball. It didn't entertain her and before long she started thinking about Kai. She knew he was fine, but was so used to him being with her at all times.
"Hey, you okay?" Inuyasha asked, concern showing on his face. Kagome smiled and nodded.
"I'm fine, just missing my baby." Inuyasha smiled and led her off towards the waterpark area.
"It's only been about fifteen minutes since my mom hijacked him."
"I know. I'm just so used to him being around." Kagome said as they stood in line for a boat ride. "Isn't it a little early for water rides?"
Inuyasha shrugged and smiled at her again. "It's warm enough to risk it." Kagome laughed as they waited their turn to hop on. Once they were on, Kagome settled down next to Inuyasha at the back of the boat. She hadn't paid attention to what the ride was while in line, trusting Inuyasha's judgment.
Her mistake.
The boat began to move and was pretty calming at first, until it began to pick up speed. Kagome looked wearily at Inuyasha only to receive a guilty smile in return.
"Hope you don't mind getting wet." He said, nodding his head somewhere ahead of him. Kagome turned to look and her mouth dropped. Ahead of them were several spots where water shot straight up into the air, before falling back down onto the boat. There was also a ledge with workers aiming what looked like water guns at the boat.
She turned eye wide eyes onto Inuyasha only for him to laugh and sling his arm around her shoulder, effectively pulling her into his side. Kagome barely had time to hold her breath before the first water bomb hit over her. She heard herself squeal and Inuyasha laugh. The boat began to move a bit faster as it weaved through the water landmines and under the waterfall. Kagome's eyes widened, then shut tightly as she felt the waterfall hit over her head. She wasn't the only one there screaming on that one. Once the waterfall was cleared, she turned narrowed eyes onto Inuyasha who calmly reached over her to make sure her seatbelt was fastened correctly before giving her another guilty smile.
"What now?" Kagome yelled over the noise of water and laughing people. Inuyasha just grinned and pointed forward. Kagome turned her head slowly, just in time to see they were going down a manmade slide designed after the top of a waterfall. It wasn't that far down, but if she wasn't drenched already she was about to be. As soon as the boat went over, Kagome lunged herself into Inuyasha's chest, screaming out as she felt the boat sliding down. Water hit from all sides as she felt Inuyasha bring his arms around her waist and hold her to him. She felt herself begin to laugh as they hit the bottom with a giant splash that rained down over the entire boat. She could feel Inuyasha's laughter vibrate through his chest as she tried to catch her breath.
"So, how did you like it?" He asked her once his laughter settled down. She moved away from him and noticed the boat slowly down and heading towards what looked like a small dock where they would get off.
"It was actually fun." She admitted. She had never been overly fond of water rides, but she had enjoyed herself. Once the boat docked, Inuyasha helped her off and handed her one of the small complimentary towels to dry her hair. Her hair was too long and thick for it to work too well, but something was better than nothing.
Once she was done, she slung her towel over Inuyasha's shoulder and smiled at him. "What next tour guide?" She asked him as they began down a path towards more games. Inuyasha smiled back at her.
"Let's see. We have more rides of the non-water variety or more games where you can win more shit to clutter your apartment." He joked. Kagome laughed and pushed him in the direction of the rides.
They started off on some ride with the sole purpose of spinning you around until your insides came out. Luckily, no one on the ride decided to "chuck it". Inuyasha then dragged her on one that reminded her of the Giant Drop, only smaller. It did give a great view of the park though, for all of 15 seconds before falling what seemed like full speed back to the ground.
After that one, Kagome decided to make all decisions regarding rides. She pulled Inuyasha along behind her when she came to the cliché of all park clichés. She turned to Inuyasha with a huge smile on her face. "We have to." She stated and dragged him to the entrance. There wasn't even a line for the corny ride. Perfect.
Inuyasha looked up at the sign that had a swan on each side of the rides title. His eyes widened and he tugged his hand in Kagome's. "Oh, no. No way am I riding that." Kagome ignored him and continued on to pay their admission. She gave him a little push into the boat and settled down beside him.
"Oh, this is going to be so much fun." Kagome sang while laughing. She eyed Inuyasha as he shifted uncomfortably.
"Why the hell are we on this Kagome? You're going to ruin a perfectly good day." He frowned and crossed his arm over his chest. Kagome laughed again and pulled out her cell as the boat began down the tunnel. She leaned her head against Inuyasha's shoulder and prepared to snap a picture. Right when she clicked to take the picture, she felt something slightly wet and warm against her cheek.
The picture snapped and showed up on her phone a couple of seconds later to reveal a blushing Kagome and a mischievous looking Inuyasha giving her an openmouthed kiss on the cheek. You could even see the tip of his tongue on the picture. To an outsider, they looked like a couple being silly….or affectionate. Kagome went to delete the picture but Inuyasha reached out to grab it out of her hands.
"Hey!" She yelled reaching for her phone. He pushed out an arm, blocking her and leaned over the boat. "If you put my phone in that water I will end you!"
He chuckled while pressing buttons with one hand. "No worries, I won't drop your phone." After a couple more minutes he handed the phone back to her. She looked at it and noticed he made the photo a part of her screen saver. She tucked her phone in her pocket and narrowed her eyes at him.
"You could have just asked me to do that." She turned back around in the boat to look at the hearts and cupids lining the tunnel. Who actually liked this ride?
"I wanted to send it to my phone." He said and Kagome turned to see his phone in his hand. She saw him hit a few buttons, smirk and then put his phone back in his pocket. He gave her a large smile and then looked around the tunnel. "Who the hell invented this crap?"
"It's supposed to be romantic." Kagome tried to hide her laughter with a serious face. Inuyasha turned towards her and gave a crooked smile.
"If you wanted romance baby, all you had to do was ask. I'll take you to McDonalds after we leave. You can order anything off the dollar menu." Kagome laughed and playfully smacked his shoulder.
"I'm not looking for romance goof. I just always wanted to go on the corniest ride in the world."
"Glad to help you cross it off your bucket list." He chuckled and they fell into a comfortable silence the rest of the ride. Once they came back out the tunnel, he helped her from the boat and they began walking towards the show grounds.
"I think we're late meeting your mom." Kagome said as they finally arrived, looking around for a familiar face.
"Hey, look over there. Looks like Sango and Miroku are getting along just fine." He said pointing to a corner of the field that had tables. She looked in the direction he pointed and laughed. There was Sango and Miroku sitting side by side at a table, feeding each other a banana split. Kagome felt Inuyasha grab her hand and turned to see him heading towards the other side where a blue open tent was set up. She realized his family and Kai were sitting under it.
"Leave it to my mom to bring an entire set up." Inuyasha mumbled as they walked over. She noticed that under the tent they had chairs set up and a table with food and drinks. There was also a large blanket in the middle where Inuyasha mom sat with Kai.
"There you are. I was half expecting to bring this handsome little man home with me." Izayoi said a question in her eyes. Kagome blushed at the implications she saw there. She headed to where Kai's stroller was parked and pulled out the hand sanitizer from the diaper bag. After sanitizing her hands, she handed it to Inuyasha and headed for the blanket.
Izayoi handed her Kai once she sat down. He was wide awake and looking around everywhere he could. Kagome smiled at him and kissed his cheek.
"He's eaten and I changed him again. He also had a little nap, but has been up since then looking about." Izayoi smiled at him and Kagome before commanding Inuyasha to bring Kagome something to drink. Inuyasha sat next to Kagome and handed her a can of pop.
"Hope you like Pepsi." He said before lifting Kai out of her lap. She frowned and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Hey, I just got him back." She complained half-heartedly.
"You see him every day, get over it." He replied back cooing and smiling at Kai, who was smiling back. Kagome could admit to herself that she liked how her son was bonding with Inuyasha. In the back of her mind, she knew she shouldn't let him get that close. She shouldn't let them form that type of bond, but she couldn't stop him if she wanted to. She wouldn't deny her son love, no matter whom that love came from.
The first test firework went into the sky and everyone around settled in to get ready for the show. Inuyasha scooted closer to Kagome and sat Kai half on his lap and half on hers. Kagome kissed the top of her son's head, not noticing Izayoi with a camera in front of them. She lifted her head at the same time Izayoi snapped the photo, the flash blinding her for a few seconds.
"Mom, really?" Inuyasha said annoyance clear in his tone. Izayoi smiled at them before handing the camera to Taisho.
"It was a Kodak moment." She said before sitting by her husband. Rin sat on the other side of her father, head buried in her phone. Inuyasha noticed she had been quiet, which was unusual for her. He made a mental note to ask her about it later.
"It's starting." Izayoi announced just before fireworks began lighting the sky. Kagome leaned back on her left hand, while her right remained around an upright Kai. She giggled at the faces he made as each display came and went. Even though she didn't want to go to the festival, she was glad Inuyasha had talked her into it. She wanted memories like these for Kai, for herself.
The display lasted about thirty minutes before they did the big finale. While Kagome wanted to stay for it, Izayoi suggested her and Inuyasha start heading out to avoid the big crowd with the baby. She promised to give Kagome a recording when she saw her next. Kagome had a feeling that would be soon. She hugged everyone as Inuyasha settled Kai in his seat and they began making their way to the parking lot.
"Did you enjoy yourself?" He asked as they finally reached the truck. She wanted to say bye to Sango and Miroku, but they had once again disappeared.
"Yeah I did actually. I'm glad you dragged us out the house." She said with a smile. She lifted Kai out of his stroller and placed him in his car seat, securing him before she settled herself in the front passenger. Inuyasha folded the stroller and somehow made it fit with the huge bag of prizes. He then hopped in the truck and began heading towards Kagome's apartment. The ride was comfortably silent, with the exception of the radio playing in the background.
Kagome could feel herself dozing off and tried her best to stay awake. It wasn't until she felt Inuyasha nudge her awake that she realized she lost that battle. He smiled at her as she rubbed her eyes.
"I would have carried you up, but I don't think I can juggle a human and a car seat up those stairs." He joked as he climbed out to get Kai. Kagome giggled and let herself out. She walked into her building, holding the door for Inuyasha and led the way upstairs. She unlocked the door and walked in, Inuyasha following behind her.
"I have to use the bathroom really quick. Can you put him in bed?" She asked as she sat down her purse and keys. Inuyasha agreed and headed to the nursery while Kagome went to answer the call of nature. Once she was done, she cleaned off her face and pulled her hair back in a ponytail. She wanted to shower, but felt a bit too drained to stand in the tub.
She headed into Kai's room and saw that he was changed, in pajamas and sleeping comfortably in his crib. She smiled, kissed his cheek and walked out pulling the door slightly closed. She headed back towards the living room to see Inuyasha out and found him dozing on the couch. He smiled sleepily at her as he stood.
"I should get going before I pass out in the hallway." He said heading towards the door. Kagome bit her lip and narrowed her eyes in thought before smiling softly at him.
"You can crash on the couch if you want. I wouldn't want you falling asleep behind the wheel." She offered. She felt as surprised as his face looked. He smiled back at her and stepped towards her. She stiffened for a second in surprise as he enveloped her in a hug. After a couple of seconds she hugged him back smiling before he let go.
"Thanks for the offer buddy, but I literally live about ten blocks from you. I can handle it." He said as he headed towards the door. He turned again before he walked out. "I'll text you tomorrow. Maybe the three of us can hang out again soon?" He asked, hope shining in his eyes.
Kagome smiled. "Yeah, I'd like that Yash." He smiled back, waved and headed out the door. Kagome made sure the apartment was locked up and headed off to bed with a smile on her face.
While she had lost Kouga and a father to love her son, she had gained something in Inuyasha that she hadn't known she needed. A friend for her, and for Kai.
