The Impossible Possibilities of Love
Chapter 9

"You two are getting pretty close aren't you?" Sango smirked at Kagome over her kitchen table. Kagome rolled her eyes and popped another fry in her mouth before picking up a bowl of Kai's baby food. He was 5 months now and was starting to eat some solids. He was getting seriously active for his age and had started crawling last week, and was even attempting to stand on his own. His pediatrician said he was advanced for his age and not to worry.
"We're friends; there's nothing wrong with him being around." She spooned a bit of carrots into Kai's eager mouth and grabbed another fry off her own plate. Kai certainly loved having Inuyasha around. Whenever Inuyasha would come over, her sons eyes would light up and he'd give him his best smile. Kagome worked in her office at least three days a week and had various appointments in between, so having Inuyasha as a babysitter was working out perfectly. He would sometimes stay at her apartment to babysit, or take Kai over to his mother's. Izayoi treated Kai as if he were part of her family and it felt good for her son to have so many people who cared about him.
"Yeah, sure you are." Sango laughed as she finished her burger. She got up to take her plate over to the sink before sitting back at the table and taking Kai's spoon from Kagome. "Then he won't mind if you go out on a date tomorrow right?" She asked, arching one eyebrow.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Kagome asked with her own eyebrow raised. "You better not have done what I think you did."
"I did. You remember Shin, from college senior year? Well, I ran into him yesterday at the grocery store and he was asking about you. So I did the best friend thing and set you up on a blind date, of sorts." Sango stuck her tongue out at Kagome as she continued to feed Kai. "God this kid can eat! That was two jars of food you made him."
Kagome smiled at her son who now had a satisfied smile on his face as he sat in his highchair. He looked at the spoon in Sango's hand and made a "give me" gesture with his tiny little hand. Sango handed him the spoon and he proceeded to beat it against his tray. They both laughed and sat in silence for a moment, watching him have fun. Kagome then turned a frown to her so called best friend. "I don't want to go on a date Sango. I don't have the time right now." Sango waved a hand at her dismissively.
"You have all the time in the damn world. All you do is work and hang out with Inuyasha." Sango gave her a soft smile. "It's time to move on babe. Besides, I will be with you on this date. It's a double date; you, me, Shin and his brother Hashi. It'll be fun, you'll see."
Kagome raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you and Miroku a thing now?" She'd noticed that Sango spent almost as much time with Miroku as she claimed Kagome did with Inuyasha.
"Friends with benefits honey, there's a difference." Sango responded.
"Well this is pointless anyway. I'm married, remember?" Kagome smiled at Sango as she got up to get Kai's diaper bag together.
"Yeah, but only for a few more weeks. What's the hold up on that anyway? I thought they said three months for his certificate?" Kagome found herself rolling her eyes again. She had gotten a call from the hospital shortly after Kai turned three months informing her that his paperwork had gotten mixed up with other patient files since they were doing a management switchover.
"They still haven't found it yet. I've been contacting them every week the last two months and it's always the same thing." Kagome complained for what felt like the thousandth time. Sango had recommended she sue the hospital, but honestly she didn't want to. She would never admit it out loud, but she wasn't ready for the day when Inuyasha would have no reason to be in their life. Maybe that was selfish, but she didn't care.
"I still say sue their asses, but being fake married doesn't excuse you from this date lady. You're going, so wear something nice tomorrow night." Sango gave her a bright smile and handed her, her purse and keys.
"I'll have to speak with Inuyasha about this and see if he'd mind watching Kai." She bit her lip. Yes, they were friends, but she felt awkward asking him to babysit while she went out with another man.
"It's getting late and I need to finish up the design for miss bossy." Kagome said as she slipped Kai's sweater on him. It was the middle of September now, and while it wasn't cold there was a bit of a chill at night. "Thanks for dinner, minus the forced date invitation."
"Any time." Sango walked her to the door and laughed. Kagome strapped Kai into his seat, smiling at his baby babble and then hopped in the front seat and made the drive to her apartment.
As soon as she walked into the apartment and sat Kai in the playpen, her cell started to ring. She dug it out her purse to find a text from Sango asking if they had arrived alright. She texted her back yes and was about to put her phone down, but instead went to her contacts and pulled up Inuyasha's number. She sent him a text.
Me: hey you, would you mind watching Kai tomorrow night?
She sat her phone on the table and took out the extra food from Kai's bag and put it in the fridge. She then went and ran a bath for Kai before grabbing his PJ's and soap and lotion. Her phone lit up as she walked back into the living room and she picked it up to see a text from Inuyasha.
Yash: sure, though I was going to take you and my lil guy to dinner. Other plans?
Kagome bit her lip again as she thought of the best answer to that. They were only friends, but something about asking him to babysit while she went out on a date just felt weird.
Me: Yeah, um, I have a date tomorrow…
Yash: you and Sango finally getting your girls night?
Me: something like that
Yash: no problem. If you want I can have mom watch Kai and Roku and I can join you girls out.
Kagome chewed her lip as she went back into the bathroom to turn off the bath water.
Me: We're actually doing a double date tomorrow.
Yash: Double date?
Me: Yeah... just some guys we knew from college.
Kagome put her phone down momentarily to get Kai and put him in his bath. He was still a bit wired from their visit from Sango and immediately began splashing as soon as his feet hit the water. Kagome washed him as quick as she could and dried him off. After dressing him she placed him in his crib and turned on his overhead lullaby machine. She then went back to the bathroom to grab her phone noticing a new text from Inuyasha.
Yash: Oh. Hope you have fun. Be there to get Kai tomorrow.
Kagome wasn't sure how to read into his message, so she didn't. They were friends and she wasn't doing anything wrong. Was she excited about the date? No, but she would go because Sango was right. It was time to move on. Kagome went back into Kai's room and saw him now fast asleep. She headed to her own, changed into PJ's and went to bed.
~X~
Standing in front of the mirror, Kagome tried to decide if she would change her clothes again for the fifth time. She pursed her lips as her eyes swept over her reflection. She wore a halter styled, turquoise top with dark grey fitted jeans topped off with her three inch heeled boots. She styled her hair half up with loose curls falling, her bangs swept to the side. She only did light eye shadow, eyeliner and gloss.
Just as she was about to consider changing again, there was a knock on the door. Kagome took a deep breath and made her way up front to let Inuyasha in. Kai was fast asleep after a busy day of running around to stores with Kagome. Because she was usually busy during the week, she took Saturday and Sunday to catch up on grocery shopping and whatever else she needed to do. Taking another deep breath, she made her way to the door and opened it, her eyes widening at the sight before her.
Inuyasha stood before her, one hand tucked into his pocket and the other holding a bouquet of white roses. He wore a light grey dress shirt with the top two buttons undone. His slacks were perfectly molded to his form and his hair was tied back in its usual low ponytail. He had let it grow out instead of cutting it, after Kagome had mentioned liking him with hair. It was now down to his mid back and though Kagome liked the look on him, she was secretly jealous of how quick it grew and how shiny and tame it was. She had to spend two hours straightening out her unruly mess.
"You look beautiful." He said as his eyes swept over her at a leisurely pace. He stepped in, brushing up against her as he walked into the living room. Kagome let out a ragged breath as she closed the door and followed him. He smiled at her and handed her the bouquet. "Thought I'd be the first to give you flowers tonight. Can't have this new guy showing me up." He smirked at her.
"Thanks Yash, but no one is trying to show you up." She grinned back and went to put the flowers in water. "So why are you so dressed up?"
Inuyasha sat on the couch and crossed his arms. "You aren't the only one with a date." Kagome blinked at him and sported a lost expression.
"You had a date tonight?" She asked, trying hard to squash what felt like jealously down. What right did she have to be jealous?
He nodded and smiled at her. "It's later though, so no worries on it." He looked around and scrunched his brows together. "Where's my little guy?"
Kagome opened her mouth to tell him that Kai was out for the night, but just as the words were about to leave her mouth the baby monitor on the table rang out with Kai's voice yelling "Ya ya ya!" Inuyasha smiled and winked at Kagome while making his way to Kai's room. He returned a couple minutes later with a fully awake Kai who sported a huge grin while looking up at Yash.
Kagome quickly grabbed her phone off the table and snapped a picture of the two of them; smiling together in their own little world. Her phone was full of pictures of Kai by himself and with her and Yash.
"You should know better than to think my little guy would stay asleep when I'm here," He joked. He nodded his head towards her phone. "Added another one to your collection?"
"Yes I did. At this rate I'll have a million pictures of his childhood alone." Kagome smiled at the screen saver on her phone. Even after four months, she still had the picture of her and Inuyasha from the festival as the screen saver.
She put her phone in her small, black purse and set it back on the table before checking the time. Her date was due to arrive in about fifteen minutes and she needed to put some finishing touches on her ensemble. She smiled as Inuyasha laid on the floor with Kai, playing with a few of his toys.
"I have to finish getting ready. Open the door for me if he gets here before I'm done." Kagome said as she half walked, half ran down the hall. She really didn't want Inuyasha near her date. She didn't think he'd do anything bad—but it was better to be safe than sorry.
-X-
Inuyasha watched Kagome walk back to her room with a little pep in her step—and he didn't like it. He didn't like the thought that she was spending so much time getting pretty for another guy. He knew he had no rights over those feelings or her, but he couldn't help it.
He and Kagome had become friends over the past few months. She and Kai were part of his everyday routine. He would text her to check on Kai throughout the day and even stopped by after work to play with him on Kagome's off days. When she did work, he would watch Kai at her place or his mother's. He had even taken him into the office with him a few times.
His coworkers all thought Kai was his son, and he made no moves to correct them. The more time he spent with his little guy, the more he found it to be true—Kai was his son. It doesn't matter that he didn't actually make Kai with Kagome. He was there for him; he played with him, bought him toys and clothes, spent his days off with him and planned his week around him. As far as he was concerned, he was his father. He had wanted to bring adoption up to Kagome, but he wasn't sure how she would feel.
It was just his luck that Miroku had a cousin that worked in the hospital and she conveniently "lost" Kai's information. So his birth certificate was on hold again for the time being. He needed to bring up adoption with Kagome before she went and had him removed from Kai's birth certificate and removed them from his life.
"Hey little man, how do you feel about me being your dad?" He asked the hyper bundle that was currently scooting on the carpet. Kai looked at him with a drool-y smile and proceeded to put his toy phone in his mouth. "I'll take that as a yes then." Inuyasha laughed and went to pick Kai up, but was interrupted by a knock at the door.
His laughter immediately died down as he realized exactly who was at the door. He got up and slowly made his way over, opening the door to find Kagome's date for the evening. Inuyasha smirked. 'This guy is a fucking shrimp. And here I was expecting competition.'
"Um…hi, is Kagome in?" The guy asked, leaning back to look at the apartment number on the door. "I have the right apartment don't I?"
Inuyasha smirked and narrowed his eyes. How did he think this guy was going to be competition? "Yeah she's still getting ready. Why don't you come in and have a seat?" Inuyasha opened the door more and allowed him to enter. "What's your name?"
The guy walked in and smiled slightly at Inuyasha. He was fiddling with the single rose he had in his hand. Nervous. Inuyasha smirked again.
"Shin Irume, and you are?" He asked back. Inuyasha closed the door and walked back over to where Kai was sitting, banging his toy phone against a block.
"Yash. How long have you and Gome known eachother?" He asked as he plopped down next to Kai, who happily crawled into his lap. Shin looked around and then sat on the couch.
"I knew her in college, but haven't spoken to her in awhile." He looked at Kai and Inuyasha on the floor. "Are you the babysitter?"
Inuyasha almost said yes, but a lightbulb went off in his head. "Not really." He waited for the guy to take the bait.
"Not really?" Shin asked, falling right into it.
"Well, we don't tell anyone, but we both wanted a kids with no commitment to another person so….she chose me to be her donor." He smiled at Shin, who was sitting with his mouth wide open. "Can't you see the resemblance?" He pushed his face against Kai's and did his best to hold in his laugh.
"S-Sango did mention that Kagome was artificially inseminated, but…."
"Yeah, Sango doesn't know all the details on that one. No one does, but I figured you should know in case things with you and Kagome got serious." Inuyasha flashed another smile at him. "I'm around often. Just about everyday really."
"I see. Well, that's better than him not having a father in his life." Shin gave a small smile to Kai, who stared at him with a blank face.
'That's my boy. Don't be nice to the enemy.' Inuyasha thought to himself as he looked down at Kai. His little guy wasn't impressed with Shim either.
"I'll be ready in just a sec!" Kagome called from her bedroom. Inuyasha noticed Shin looking in that direction and frowned. 'Get that shit out of your head, you'll never go down that hallway.'
"So, where are you taking our girl?" Inuyasha asked as he rolled a ball back and forth with Kai. Shin looked at him and blinked before giving a small smile back. He was catching onto the game.
"We're meeting up with my brother and Sango; we're taking the girls out for a movie and dinner." He said proudly, almost causing Inuyasha to really laugh out loud. What were they, in high school?
"Hmm….sounds interesting. Kagome will be bored though." Inuyasha saw Shin straighten out the corner of his eye as he waited for Kai to roll the ball back.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, she's more of the adventurous type. Dinner and a movie? That will never impress her—she hates fancy restaurants for one." Inuyasha told him as ideas floated around his mind.
"Really?" Shin asked, giving Inuyasha his undivided attention.
"Really. I took her to this high class spot when we first met and she blew a gasket on me. Now, a little Ramen shop is more to her liking. The smaller the better."
"What about the movie, she wouldn't like that?"
"Hell no. She'll fall asleep on you. I'll tell you a secret, because you really seem to like her." Inuyasha leaned closer to the couch and Shin leaned forward as if waiting for a huge secret to be revealed. "She has a fantasy of going skinny dipping out a Komoca Lake. Take her there and man, you're in! And, before I forget, she's very independent so be prepared to go dutch or she'll snap your head off." Inuyasha smiled as Shin's eyes widened in amazement.
Before more could be said Kagome walked in, looking beautiful as ever. "I'm ready, sorry I took so long. I hope Inuyasha was behaving himself." She gave Inuyasha the side eye and received a smile from him in return.
Shin stood up and handed her the rose. "He's been great actually. This is for you, by the way." Kagome took the rose and smiled. Inuyasha scowled at her, not noticing what Kai was up to.
Before anyone could react, a block went flying through the air and hit Shin right on the nose. His hands went up to cup his face as Inuyasha and Kagome both turned to look at Kai; one with wide, embarrassed eyes and one with a huge smile and eyes full of pride. Kagome turned to Inuyasha and narrowed her eyes.
"What have you been teaching him?" She growled before turning to check on Shin. He had moved his hands and was now sporting a red nose. Kagome had to work hard to keep her laugh in. "I'm so sorry. He's never done that before." Her eyes cut back to Inuyasha as he picked Kai up and stood.
"That's my boy." Inuyasha whispered to Kai, causing a small giggle from the boy. Kagome shook her head and kissed her son on the cheek before giving Inuyasha another glare.
"We should get going or we'll miss Sango and your brother." Kagome said as she grabbed her purse and headed towards the door.
"Have a good night, mommy." Inuyasha sang to her as he and Kai waved. Kagome turned back with a smile for Kai, and a glare for Inuyasha.
"You two behave." She said as she closed the door behind her and Shin. Inuyasha smiled and plopped down on the couch with Kai in his lap. The two looked at each other in silence.
"What to do…what to do…" Inuyasha mumbled aloud. A smile lit his face as he remembered the sundae making kit he and Kagome had picked up the last time they went shopping together. "What do you say to a sundae little guy?"
He was about to stand when his cell phone went off. He took it out of his pocket to see a text from Iyana.
Iyana: are we still on for 2nite?
He had almost forgotten he was supposed to take her out once Kagome came back. He felt bad for the way he was treating her and decided to hold out an olive branch. She hadn't done anything wrong to him—besides be annoying—so he thought he could at least remain friends.
Me: yeah, I'll meet you there once Gome gets back.
Iyana: you're babysitting again? Just bring him.
Inuyasha thought about it for a moment, then decided against it. If Kagome found out, she'd likely ring his neck and he happened to be very attached to his neck.
Me: Nah, she'll be back soon. Txt you then.
He slipped his phone back in his pocket and headed into the kitchen with Kai to make their sundaes.
-X-
Kagome had high hopes for her date that night. Shin was the perfect gentlemen and easy to talk to. She was enjoying her—until he pulled up to a small Ramen shop on the outskirts of the city. She thought maybe he was stopping for some unseen reason, but quickly got the picture once he came around and opened her door. She got out and saw Sango and who she assumed was Hashi walking towards them. Sango also had a confused look on her face as they all headed inside the little shop. They found a round corner table, barely big enough to fit them all and sat down.
Kagome gave Sango a look and Sango shook her head. They were thinking the same thing—what the fuck?
This wasn't exactly what she had in mind when Shin mentioned dinner and a movie. A waiter came over and handed them all menus…..which were old and some of the words were missing from wear. The menu was full of noodle dishes, nothing else was listed.
Great. Here she was starving and dreaming of steak and all she had to choose from was seven different styles of noodles. She chose chicken and handed back the menu to the waiter as the others did the same. Kagome took a deep breath and tried to be reasonable. Maybe the guys didn't want to be too over the top on the first date. She could live with that. Sort of.
As they waited for their food, Sango spoke with Hashi about one thing or another. Kagome noticed that Shin kept giving her weird looks and she grew tired of it.
"Is something wrong?" She asked him. He looked surprised that she asked, then smiled.
"No, I was just wondering, how long have you known Yash?" Kagome raised an eyebrow, curious about the question.
"I've known him for a while now. Why?" She asked.
"I was just curious. You guys made a beautiful little boy…with a strong arm." He laughed and gently touched his nose.
They made a beautiful little boy? What had Yash told him?
"I'm sorry, we made a beautiful little boy?" Shin smiled at her and leaned in.
"It's okay, he told me that he was your donor. I think he's a great friend for doing that for you." He whispered before leaning back in his chair and smiling at her.
'That little…..' Inuyasha was in a world of pain when she got back home.
The food arrived at the table before she could say anything back to Shin. She decided to just leave it alone for now. It was better he thought Inuyasha was Kai's father. That meant less questions about the whole thing.
They ate is companionable silence. Kagome noticed that Hashi and Sango were actually hitting it off well, all things considered. She wondered if it would go anywhere, seeing as Sango had an ongoing thing with Miroku.
Once they were done, the waiter came over to collect the bowls and bring the check.
"Actually we'll need separate checks." Kagome head Shin say, but she tuned him out as she pulled out her phone to text Yash. She wanted to check on the baby.
Me: Are you 2 behaving?
Yash: Let me check…..yup, the apartment hasn't burned down yet.
Me: don't joke around about that!
Yash: calm your panties mrs. Hamada, I got this. Peace
Kagome smiled at her phone and shook her head. She put her phone away and looked up noticing Sango giving her a wide eyed look. She frowned and turned back towards Shin, noticing the piece of paper next to her. She picked it up and saw a check for her meal. She looked up at Shin and he smiled at her before paying the waiter for his meal. She looked back to Sango with wide, disbelieving eyes. He wanted a date and she had to pay her own way?
Kagome shook her head and pulled her card out of her purse, handing it over to the waiter. She didn't have high hopes for the rest of her evening if this was any indicator. The waiter brought back her card and she stood to leave. Sango walked over to her and pulled her to the side.
"What the hell was that about?" Sango asked. "He practically begged me to set this up and he pulls that crap?!"
Kagome just shook her head. "I have no clue."
"Well Hashi and I decided to go to the botanicals tonight to see their lights out event. Will you be okay at the movies alone with the cheapskate?" Sango asked.
"I'll be fine, though I'm two seconds away from heading home and calling it a loss." Kagome said. She waved bye to Hashi and Sango and walked with Shin back to his car.
'Yash always pays when we go out.' Kagome thought before she could stop herself. The last thing she needed to do was start comparing other guys to Yash. No one was perfect. Maybe Shin thought she would be more comfortable picking up her own check. She climbed in as he opened the door for her and went around to his side.
Her mind wandered as he drove, so she wasn't paying attention to the direction they were heading in. Before she knew it, they were at Komoca Lake parking. She turned towards Shin to ask what was going on, but he had already exited the car. He opened her door and she climbed out.
"What are we doing here?" Kagome asked warily. She had watched enough scary movies to recognize this scene. Thank Kami she still carried her pepper spray in her purse.
"I thought you might like to come down to the lake. It has an excellent view at night." He smiled at her and grabbed her hand, pulling her down towards the dock.
Okay, she'd give him a brownie point—the view of the lake was amazing. The moon was bright and casts a pretty shadow across the water. They stood on the dock and enjoyed the view. The sounds of nature played all around and Kagome relaxed a bit. This could make up for the restaurant mishap.
The sound of rustling next to her made her head turn in Shin's direction and her eyes widened when she noticed her was taking his shirt off.
'Or maybe not…' She thought to herself as he dropped his shirt and began to unbuckle his pants.
"Uh, Shin, what are you doing?" She asked as she took a step away from him. Rapists didn't get fully undressed first, did they?
"Let's go skinny dipping." He smirked at her as he dropped his boxers and headed to the end of the dock. Kagome stood there in disbelief as he winked at her and jumped in.
Without thinking about it twice, she turned and ran from the dock back out onto the street. Luckily, the cab services ran later on weekends and she was able to snag one after a couple of minutes standing there. She thought she heard Shin call her name, but she sure as hell didn't wait to find out. He was on the permanent 'creepy motherfucker' list and he wasn't coming off it.
She gave the driver her address and leaned back taking another deep breath. She sent a short text to Sango that she was heading home and set up a time for them to discuss the disaster that was her date.
Twenty minutes later she was finally walking into her apartment, half expecting to be greeted by a hyper baby and a messy house. She was surprised to see the living room empty, and clean. She looked around and saw no signs of her son or Yash. She was about to call out to him when she saw him coming down the hallway from Kai's room. He smiled at her as he sat a baby monitor on the table.
"Back this early?" He asked stopping in front of her. She rolled her eyes and sat her purse on the table.
"Yes and I am almost positive that I will never go on a date again." She sat on the couch and told Inuyasha every last embarrassing detail of her date. And he laughed the whole time.
"You can't be serious." He said between laughs. "You just left him there? Naked?!"
Kagome grinned. "Yes, and without remorse too. Who the hell takes someone skinny dipping on the first date?" Kagome yawned and looked at the clock on the wall. "Hey, you better get going. You'll miss your date." She turned back and smiled at Yash. In reality, she wanted him to stay and keep her company.
He turned and looked at the clock before smirking at her. "You're probably right." He said leaning back against the couch and turning on the TV. Kagome found herself leaning back against him and before she knew it, she was out.
Inuyasha looked down at her and gave her a light kiss on the nose. He leaned back against the couch and dug his phone out, sending a quick text.
Me: something came up. Raincheck.
He sat his phone on the table next to the monitor and pulled the blanket off the back of the couch. He laid back and curled Kagome on the couch next to him, using the pillow and armrest to lay his head against. He pulled the blanket over them and followed her to sleep. He had no intentions of actually leaving that night.
A/N:I know, I said you wouldn't have to wait a month and...you waited over three months! Life is seriously hectic right now, so I won't make any promises on the next chapter. I don't want to get giving you a time frame and then not making it. I just have a lot going on and unfortunately, fanfic has to take the back burner to it :( But I do hope you enjoyed this chapter and as always, please review. I use them for motivation lol TTFN Hunnies
