Ally POV
"So, I kind of have something to tell you."
"Okay, what is it?"
"Well, it's really important. And it's going to shock you."
"Oh my god, are they making an Ice Age 5?"
"What? No, that's-"
"Finding Nemo 2! Oh wait, that's already coming out in 2015...Finding Dory."
"No! Well, yes, but that's not what I have to-"
"You died your hair green. Actually, that would look sexy on you."
"Of course not. Would you just-"
"I'm getting this vibe that Pancakes is really a boy."
"Austin!" I finally screamed. "Would you just let me speak please?"
"Sorry," he said sheepishly. "Okay, what's up?"
"Um...I wish I didn't have to tell you this over the phone," I said.
"Okay, now you're scaring me, Ally. What's wrong?"
"Jesse is my brother!" I blurt out.
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before Austin said, "What did you just say?"
"He's my brother. Well, half brother, really; we have the same mom," I said.
"Yes!" Austin yelled into the phone. I had to pull it away from my ear. "That's the best news I've heard all day. Hey Dez, Trish! Jesse and Ally are siblings! Isn't that awesome?"
"That was easier than I thought," I said when he had calmed down.
"Wow, that's shocking and awesome."
"Now you can officially get rid of your jealousy."
"What? I was not jealous!"
"Yeah, and I don't breathe," I said sarcastically. "I'll explain everything when I see you in a couple of weeks. It's too much to say over the phone and I'd rather do it in person."
"Sounds good. I miss you."
"I miss you, too," I said. "Maci misses you a lot. She always asks for you."
"Where is she?"
"Sleeping," I explained. "It's eleven o'clock at night here."
"Right," he said. "I forgot I'm in Tucson. It's only eight here."
"Did you have a good show?"
"It was so good, Ally; I wish you could have been there," he said.
"Me, too. But I better let you go," I said. "You have a big day again tomorrow."
"You sound like my mother."
"Just taking care of you, like I always do," I smiled. "Goodnight, Austin."
"Night, Als, give Maci a kiss for me. Love you lots," he yawned.
"I will. Love you, too." I hung up and put the phone back on the base before heading back to the living room to finish another episode of One Tree Hill.
When that was done, I thought that I should probably go to bed since Maci and I were supposed to meet Jesse the next morning for breakfast.
Jesse had said he would tell Quinn the news and I imagine she would tell everyone else. I hadn't heard from him since then so I had no idea how she took it.
My wonder was answered when my cell rang again. I grabbed it before Maci would hear it. "Hello?"
A shrill screech came from the other end, causing me to rip the phone away from my ear. "Quinn?"
"Ally! Oh my god, like, what is, I can't even, holy crap, you and Jesse and, what is air, I can't breathe, is it hot in here, Jesus, and like-"
"Quinn, slow down, you're going to give yourself a heart attack," I interrupted.
"Sorry," she gasped. "Okay, I'm cool."
"Really?"
"Just a second." She screamed again but this time it was fainter, so she must have pulled the phone away from her ear. "Oh my god, what is life?" She screamed.
It was silent for a minute and I thought she had hung up. "Uh, earth to Quinn?"
"Okay, now I swear I'm good," she replied. "Dude, you and Jesse are brother and sister."
"Well, half, technically."
"Who cares, some of the same blood runs through your veins. I can't believe my best friend and my boyfriend are siblings. As if you guys just found out now, after knowing each other for months."
"Apparently my mom is good at hiding things," I grumbled.
"Not really...you and Jesse figured it out."
"Eventually, yeah. But she was sneaky at the start. But I mean really? Like twenty one years later and she tells us?"
"I know it's a lot to take in. I think it's awesome, personally," Quinn said.
"I don't mind either, neither does Jesse. We're just pissed at my mom for not telling us sooner. Especially since she deliberately tried to keep it from us." I sighed. "Our mom."
"At least now you know. Dude, this is so cool!"
I gave a short laugh. "I'm still in shock. But I'm going to head to bed; I'm supposed to be meeting Jesse tomorrow for breakfast so we can talk about this."
"Alright, me too. Goodnight!"
"Night." I hung up and set my phone in the pocket of my housecoat.
"Come on, Pancakes," I said as I lightly patted the side of my leg while I made my way up the staircase. She followed me up, her nails clicking on the hardwood laminate steps. She slipped turning the corner to the bedroom and I stifled a laugh.
"Careful, girl," I giggled. "It's not like the carpet in the living room."
"WOOF!"
"Shhhh!" I whispered. "You'll wake up Maci!"
Pancakes whimpered and sat down, as if saying sorry. "Come on," I said again as she followed me into the bedroom. She jumped onto the bed in Austin's spot where she had been sleeping since Austin had left. I didn't mind; at least there was a body in his spot.
"Pancakes, don't smoke me in the face with your tail again," I muttered as I crawled under the covers. "I think my eyes watered for ten minutes when you did that last night."
She snorted and I grinned, closing my eyes...
I could faintly hear a dog barking, so I grudgingly opened my eyes and glanced at the clock. It was three in the morning.
I thought it was a stray dog outside, so I said, "somebody shut that stupid dog up!" and crawled out of bed. I immediately grabbed my pink sweater that was hanging over the chair in the room. "Jeez, why is it so cold in here?" I muttered. I went over to the window and slid it open, looking down in the night. There was nothing outside, so confused, I closed the window again.
"Pancakes?" I said, walking out into the hallway. I could now tell that it was definitely Pancakes barking from somewhere downstairs. "Pancakes, shh!"
That was odd. She never barked at this time. And why was it so cold in the house?
Getting a little worried, I went to check on Maci. She was curled up in the crib, very much awake, and was making little whimpering noises. "Awe, sweetie, what's wrong? Did Pancakes wake you up?" I bent down and scooped her up, grabbing her oversized fuzzy blanket and wrapping her in it. "Shhh, mommy's here."
I slowly went downstairs and Pancakes' barking was getting louder as I made my way through the dark halls and rooms until I could find her. It was times like these when I wished we didn't live in a mansion.
It was even colder downstairs. In the living room, I shifted Maci to my other arm and checked the thermostat on the wall. It was the same as I had left it the night before. "Well, what the hell?" I wondered aloud.
Maci started crying a little and she curled into the blanket more. "Shh, baby, calm down. I know it's cold," I soothed as I rocked her sniffling form. I rubbed her back and turned around. "Pancakes! Be quiet, girl!"
I flipped the light switch on in the kitchen. Except the light didn't come on. I tried again, but it still stayed dark. That's when I noticed there was a broken lamp in the corner of the room, the whole thing tipped over. There was glass everywhere.
Getting even more worried, I held Maci tighter. "Maci, now you really need to be quieter," I whispered. Pancakes came running into the kitchen, barely able to stop on the hardwood floor. She narrowly missed the shards of glass. "Hey, what on earth is wrong with you?"
She barked again and prodded my knees.
"You're scaring Maci, stop it," I scolded. "Bad girl."
She whimpered and shifted on her feet, like she was ready to jump, and her big yellow form turned before running back into the dark hallway.
I grabbed a towel from the cupboard and set it on the ground, brushing the glass out of the way to make a path for myself. I followed Pancakes and finally realized why she was barking. And everything else pieced together.
The front door was wide open.
