The next couple weeks were pretty much normal. Bella started finding where she fit in it at school. Without surprise, she came home and asked me and dad both about the Cullen family. Dad spent nearly five minutes, defending them. Me, I knew who they really were, so I silently nodded along with dad, hoping she wouldn't ask for a verbal answer.

January 29th was when everything started changing. It had started snowing the previous night. While I loved snow, I hated driving in it. But, dad got up and put snow chains on both my and Bella's vehicles so we'd both be safe on our way to and from school.

I had just walked out the door to head to school when I got a frantic call from dad. Bella had gotten in an accident at school and she was being brought to the hospital. Without second thought, I hopped into my car and drove the hospital, worried sick about Bella.

I got there right as Bella arrived at the hospital. Part of me was wondering whether or not I would be forced to wait in the waiting room, but a nurse recognized me from the last time I was here, so I was allowed back with Bella.

The nurse had taken Bella's blood pressure and temperature before walking away. The minute that the nurse was gone, Bella tore off the neck brace that was around her neck and threw it under the bed.

"Bella…"

"Don't say a word." She requested.

"What happened?" Right as I asked, somebody was brought to the bed beside Bella. It was a kid whose head was wrapped in a bunch of blood stained bandages.

"Bella, I am so sorry!" He must have been involved in the accident as Bella.

"I'm fine, Tyler - you look awful, are you all right?" As they spoke, nurses began unwinding his soiled bandages, exposing a myriad of shallow slices all over his forehead and left cheek.

He ignored her. "I thought I was going to kill you! I was going too fast, and I hit the ice wrong..." He winced as one nurse started dabbing at his face.

I started tuning out the conversation until I heard Bella say, "Umm... Edward pulled me out of the way." I froze. Edward wasn't a popular name around Forks. In fact, I only knew of one….

He looked confused. "Who?"

"Edward Cullen - he was standing next to me." She sounded like she wasn't convinced.

"Cullen? I didn't see him... wow, it was all so fast, I guess. Is he okay?"

"I think so. He's here somewhere, but they didn't make him use a stretcher."

Bella was then taken away for an x-ray. Once she came back, she told me that there was nothing wrong with her but she couldn't leave until the doctor saw her. Right then, I started praying that Dr. Cullen wasn't on shift today.

So, for the next ten minutes, Tyler kept apologizing to Bella. It got the point that I felt like punching him. Bella closed her eyes, trying to ignore him like I was.

"Is she asleep?" Looking up, I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw who it was. Even though he was two years below me, I could never forget a face like his. Edward Cullen.

"Hey, Edward, I'm really sorry -"Tyler began.

Edward lifted a hand to stop him.

"No blood, no foul," he said, flashing his bright white teeth. He moved to sit on the edge of Tyler's bed, facing Bella. I cursed inwardly, wishing that I had chosen the chair in between Bella and Tyler's beds.

"So, what's the verdict?" he asked Bella.

"There's nothing wrong with me at all, but they won't let me go," she complained. "How come you aren't strapped to a gurney like the rest of us?"

"It's all about who you know," he answered. "But don't worry, I came to spring you."

As soon as he said that, Dr. Cullen came around the corner and Bella's jaw dropped. All I could think was how pissed Sam was gonna be when he found out that I was this close to the Cullens, especially without him.

"So, Miss Swan," Dr. Cullen said in a remarkably appealing voice, "how are you feeling?" If it wasn't for knowing what he was, I would probably be entranced like Bella was. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Edward smirk.

"I'm fine." Bella replied.

He walked to the light board on the wall over my head, and turned it on.

"Your X-rays look good," he said. "Does your head hurt? Edward said you hit it pretty hard."

"Its fine," She repeated with a sigh, throwing a quick scowl toward Edward.

Dr. Cullen started lightly touching her head, when she winced after a few touches, he asked, "Tender?"

"Tender?" he asked.

"Not really."

I heard a chuckle, and looked over to see Edward's patronizing smile.

"Well, your father is in the waiting room - you can go home with him now. But come back if you feel dizzy or have trouble with your eyesight at all."

"Can't I go back to school?" She asked.

"Maybe you should take it easy today."

She then glanced at Edward. "Does he get to go to school?"

"Someone has to spread the good news that we survived," Edward said smugly.

"Actually," Dr. Cullen corrected, "most of the school seems to be in the waiting room."

"Oh no," She moaned, covering her face with her hands.

Dr. Cullen raised his eyebrows. "Do you want to stay?"

"No, no!" She insisted, throwing her legs over the side of the bed and hopping down quickly. She staggered, and Dr. Cullen caught her.

"I'm fine," She assured him again.

"Take some Tylenol for the pain," he suggested as he steadied her.

"It doesn't hurt that bad," She insisted.

"She will." I stood up, ready to leave.

"It sounds like you were extremely lucky," Dr. Cullen said, smiling as he signed her chart with a flourish.

"Lucky Edward happened to be standing next to me," She said.

"Oh, well, yes," Dr. Cullen agreed, suddenly occupied with the papers in front of him. "How have you been, Katherine?" He changed the subject.

"Fine."

"And your scars?"

"They've healed up nicely." I was short. Edward snorted, so I shot him a glare.

Then Dr. Cullen looked away, at Tyler, and walked to the next bed. "I'm afraid that you'll have to stay with us just a little bit longer," he said to Tyler, and began checking his cuts.

I grabbed my stuff and went to walk out of the ER when I saw Bella and Edward having a discussion. Every part of me wanted to grab her and run. He was no good for her.

Finally, after a few minutes, we were able to make it to the waiting room. Just like Dr. Cullen had said, the waiting room was packed with what seemed to be the entire school.

Charlie rushed to Bella's side and she put up her hands. "There's nothing wrong with me," She assured him sullenly. She sounded very aggravated.

"What did the doctor say?"

"Dr. Cullen saw me, and he said I was fine and I could go home." She sighed and looked around. "Let's go." She said right before her friends reached up. Thankfully we were able to make it outside pretty easily.

"I need to go back to school." I lamely excused, waving at the two of them. Right as they pulled off, Edward Cullen came strolling out of the hospital. Fighting my instincts, I made my way over to him.

"Edward." He stopped when he saw me, though he looked as if he wanted to run. "I have no idea what happened. But, I know that you saved her. Thank you." I nodded at him and walked away before I said anything else. Yeah… Sam was gonna be pissed.

Instead of going to school, I made my way to La Push. I couldn't remember whether or not Sam was on patrol but I knew I needed to see him. I didn't bother knocking, using my key instead. After looking in the living room and kitchen, I went to his bedroom. Out of the months we've been together, I still hadn't been in his bedroom. He knew I wanted to take it slow so the bedroom basically stayed off limits.

It was dark in there, seeing as he had all of the blinds closed. The daylight coming in from the hallway window provided a bit of light when I opened the door. Most of the room was taken up by a huge bed. A dresser was pushed up against a wall and he had a nightstand table on each side of the bed.

Sam was lying on the bed, taking up most of the room. He was slightly snoring, which alerted me that he was still asleep. He looked younger, without all the worry and concern in his face. It was hard to remember sometimes that he was only 19.

"Kate?" I heard him yawn and sit up a little. "I thought you had school."

"I wanted to see you." He looked so adorable like he was that I couldn't bear to tell him at this moment. So, I just kicked off my shoes and crawled into bed with him.

"Want to tell me what's going on? You usually don't skip school just to see me." The good and bad thing about Sam was that he saw through my bullshit.

So, I spilled. I told him everything that had happened today. He wasn't as pissed as I thought he'd be. He kept warning me against being near the Cullens.

"You need to tell Bella that being around the Cullens are a bad idea without telling her why." He told me, whilst playing with my hair.

"She won't listen…" I mumbled. Sam's hand in my hair had a calming affect on me that usually put me to sleep, much like it was now.

"You have to try."

Just as I told Sam, Bella didn't care for what I was saying when I warned her to stay away from Edward Cullen and his family. Worse, I just think I encouraged her. She kept asking me what I knew about them and why I was warning her. Both Sam and Billy Black were upset when they learned of her fascination for the vampire.

Today was a rainy day, just like every other day in Forks, Washington. My only class of the day got canceled because the teacher was sick, so I was enjoying the day off. Bella was at school and dad was at work.

I was making a late lunch when I saw a rather nice Volvo pull into our driveway. I couldn't see who was in it due to the heavy rain. But I didn't know anyone who owned a Volvo, much like that nice of one. After a few minutes, Bella jumped out of the car and ran inside.

"What are you doing here? And where's your truck?"

"I got sick in Biology. Edward drove me home and his sister is gonna drive my truck here." I inwardly groaned. Sam was gonna ask how Bella was and I would have to listen to his lecture about how she should stay away from them.

"You better hope she has it here before dad gets home." I turned the stove off and walked upstairs to my room.

The next night at dinner, all Dad could talk about was the high school kids' trip to La Push tomorrow. I was somewhat excited because Bella was finally gonna meet Sam.

"Dad, do you know a place called Goat Rocks or something like that? I think its south of Mount Rainier," She asked casually, like she was commenting on the weather or dinner.

"Yeah - why?"

Bella shrugged. "Some kids were talking about camping there."

"It's not a very good place for camping." He sounded surprised."Too many bears. Most people go there during the hunting season."

"Oh," She murmured. "Maybe I got the name wrong."

That night, I ended up sleeping in the bathroom because of how sick I was. Every time I tried to go to my bed, I'd throw up again. I wouldn't be able to go to First Beach tomorrow.

A/N: This next part is in Bella's POV, because I wanted the readers to see her meeting Sam. It basically follows the book word for word, but I still felt it be important.

Bella's POV

"You know Bella, Jacob?" Lauren asked - in what I imagined was an insolent tone -from across the fire.

"We've sort of known each other since I was born," he laughed, smiling at me again.

"How nice." She didn't sound like she thought it was nice at all, and her pale, fishy eyes narrowed.

"Bella," she called again, watching my face carefully, "I was just saying to Tyler that it was too bad none of the Cullens could come out today. Didn't anyone think to invite them?" Her expression of concern was unconvincing.

"You mean Dr. Carlisle Cullen's family?" the tall, older boy asked before I could respond, much to Lauren's irritation. He was really closer to a man than a boy, and his voice was very deep. He looked familiar but I couldn't place him.

"Yes, do you know them?" she asked condescendingly, turning halfway toward him.

"The Cullens don't come here," he said in a tone that closed the subject, ignoring her question.

Tyler, trying to win back her attention, asked Lauren's opinion on a CD he held. She was successfully distracted.

I stared at the deep-voiced boy, taken aback, but he was looking away toward the dark forest behind us. He'd said that the Cullens didn't come here, but his tone had implied something more - that they weren't allowed; they were prohibited. His manner left a strange impression on me, and I tried to ignore it without success.

Jacob interrupted my meditation. "So is Forks driving you insane yet?"

"Oh, I'd say that's an understatement." I grimaced. He grinned understandingly.

I was still turning over the brief comment on the Cullens, and I had a sudden inspiration. It was a stupid plan, but I didn't have any better ideas. I hoped that young Jacob was as yet inexperienced around girls, so that he wouldn't see through my sure-to-be-pitiful attempts at flirting.

"Do you want to walk down the beach with me?" I asked, trying to imitate that way Edward had of looking up from underneath his eyelashes. It couldn't have nearly the same effect, I was sure, but Jacob jumped up willingly enough.

As we walked north across the multihued stones toward the driftwood seawall, the clouds finally closed ranks across the sky, causing the sea to darken and the temperature to drop. I shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my jacket.

"So you're, what, sixteen?" I asked, trying not to look like an idiot as I fluttered my eyelids the way I'd seen girls do on TV.

"I just turned fifteen," he confessed, flattered.

"Really?" My face was full of false surprise. "I would have thought you were older."

"I'm tall for my age," he explained.

"Do you come up to Forks much?" I asked archly, as if I was hoping for a yes. I sounded idiotic to myself. I was afraid he would turn on me with disgust and accuse me of my fraud, but he still seemed flattered.

"Not too much," he admitted with a frown. "But when I get my car finished I can go up as much as I want - after I get my license," he amended.

"Who was that other boy Lauren was talking to? He seemed a little old to be hanging out with us." I purposefully lumped myself in with the youngsters, trying to make it clear that I preferred Jacob.

"That's Sam - he's nineteen," he informed me. Then, I realized where I knew him from. Katie was dating Sam. She had few pictures of the two of them in her room. In the pictures, Sam had a careful, easygoing look on his face that did not at all mimic the serious "down-to-business" look he wore tonight. Katie was dating Sam That could only mean one thing; Katie must have known something about the Cullens.

Katie's POV

I spent the rest of the weekend near the bathroom. Sam had called me to tell me that he and Bella met, but he didn't think she got the best impression of him. When he explained what had happened, I realized that Bella could be coming up to me and asking me questions at anytime. Suddenly, I was glad that I was sick.

I was still sick on that Monday, which upset me since it was the occasional nice day in Forks. It would have been a perfect day for me and Sam to hang out.

Bella ended up going dress shopping with Angela and Jessica for the dance that was coming up in a few weeks. She got home rather early and by the look on her face, I had a feeling that something else happened and that it had something to do with Edward Cullen.

The next day, I was finally feeling well enough to go to school. Me and Bella had breakfast in silent, which I was grateful and scared. I didn't know how much she knew. As we both walked out to our cars, a silver car sat in the fog. After a few minutes, I realized it was Edward Cullen's Volvo. Sending a glare his way, I got into my car and pulled out without saying a word to Bella.

Right as I turned off the street, I called Sam. He didn't answer but I left a four-worded voicemail.

"I think she knows."
