A/N: I know that I'm speeding through New Moon, but out of all the Twilight books, it was my least favorite, so I'm not dwelling on it. I plan on spending a good amount of time of Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, and post Breaking Dawn, so bare with me.
Your reviews for Chapter 20 and 21 will be answered/replied to in chapter 22.
The next month flew by before I knew what exactly was going on. Bella had started spending more time at my house, which was kind of comforting. I was getting close with my sister and I wasn't left alone when Sam was out at patrol. Whenever I wasn't home, she was with Jacob or with Emily at my house.
Then, Bella decided to go cliff diving and nearly died because the waves were rough that day. That same day, Harry had a massive heart attack and was put into the hospital then died. The heart attack was due to his unhealthy eating and seeing not only Seth, but Leah phase for the first time.
Jake went to the hospital to be with his dad and I offered to take Bella home since Sam was with Sam and Leah along with Jared, trying to calm them down enough so they could phase back to be with their mom.
"You can't be doing these kinds of things, Bella." I told her, a few minutes into the drive. I knew that she had Jacob worried as hell when he realized what he happened to her.
"I know." She quickly responded. I bit my lip and decided not to get onto her anymore. We've all had a long day and arguing with her was not gonna get us anywhere.
As we pulled up to the house, I saw a somewhat familiar car. After a few seconds of studying it, I realized that it was one of the Cullen's cars.
"We need to get you back." I murmured.
"No." Bella got out of the car before I could stop her. The next thing I knew, I was following her into the house, which I realized was a really bad idea when we walked into the house.
"Alice, oh, Alice!" Bella ran and basically jumped onto the short, pale, vampire.
"Bella?" There was a strange mingling of relief and confusion in her voice as Bella practically inhaled her.
"I'm... sorry," She blubbered. "I'm just... so happy... to see you!"
"It's okay, Bella. Everything's okay." "Yes," I bawled. And, for once, it seemed that way.
Alice sighed. "I'd forgotten how exuberant you are," she said, and her tone was disapproving. I looked at her. Her eyes were black as pitch.
"Oh," Bella puffed. "Sorry."
"It's my own fault. It's been too long since I hunted. I shouldn't let myself get so thirsty. But I was in a hurry today." The vampire was hungry. Me and Bella were no match for her, even if she was a claimed 'vegetarian' and all of the pack was in La Push, they wouldn't make it in time. The look she directed at Bella then was a glare.
"Speaking of which, would you like to explain to me how you're alive?"
"You saw me fall."
"No," she disagreed, her eyes narrowing. "I saw you jump." It took me a second to remember that Alice saw the future.
Alice shook her head. "I told him this would happen, but he didn't believe me. 'Bella promised,'" her voice imitated Edward's so perfectly. "'Don't be looking for her future, either,'" she continued to quote him. '"We've done enough damage."
"But just because I'm not looking, doesn't mean I don't see" she went on. "I wasn't keeping tabs on you, I swear, Bella. It's just that I'm already attuned to you... when I saw you jumping, I didn't think, I just got on a plane. I knew I would be too late, but I couldn't do nothing. And then I get here, thinking maybe I could help Charlie somehow, and you drive up." She shook her head, this time in confusion. Her voice was strained.
"I saw you go into the water and I waited and waited for you to come up, but you didn't. What happened? And how could you do that to Charlie and Katie? Did you stop to think what this would do to him? And my brother? Do you have any idea what Edward "
"Excuse me? You're concerned about what this would do to him?" I cut her off.
"Alice, I wasn't committing suicide." Bella quickly jumped in.
"Are you saying you didn't jump off a cliff?"
"No, but…. It was for recreational purposes only."
Her expression hardened.
"I'd seen some of Jacob's friends cliff diving," I insisted. "It looked like... fun, and I was bored… I didn't think about how the storm would affect the currents. Actually, I didn't think about the water much at all."
Alice didn't seem to buy it. "So if you saw me go in, why didn't you see Jacob?" She cocked her head to the side, distracted. She then continued. "It's true that I probably would have drowned if Jacob hadn't jumped in after me. Well, okay, there's no probably about it. But he did, and he pulled me out, and I guess he towed me back to shore, though I was kind of out for that part. It couldn't have been more than a minute that I was under before he grabbed me. How come you didn't see that?"
She frowned in perplexity. "Someone pulled you out?"
"Yes. Jacob saved me."
Then she deliberately leaned in and sniffed my shoulder. I froze.
"Don't be ridiculous," she muttered, sniffing at Bella some.
"What are you doing?"
She ignored my question. "Who's Jacob?"
"Jacob Black. He's... sort of my best friend, I guess." Bella answered.
Alice nodded, seeming preoccupied.
"What?"
"I don't know," she said. "I'm not sure what it means."
"Well, I'm not dead, at least."
She rolled her eyes. "He was a fool to think you could survive alone. I've never seen anyone so prone to life-threatening idiocy."
"I survived," She pointed out.
She was thinking of something else. "So, if the currents were too much for you, how did this Jacob manage?"
"Jacob is... strong." I answered for Bella.
"See, well, he's... sort of a werewolf," Bella admitted in a rush. "The Quileutes turn into wolves when there are vampires around. They know Carlisle from a long time ago. Were you with Carlisle back then?"
"Well, I guess that explains the smell," she muttered. "But does it explain what I didn't see?" She
frowned, her porcelain forehead creasing.
"The smell?" I repeated. Could it be that werewolves smelled repulsing to vampires like vampires smelled to them?
"You smell awful," she said absently, still frowning. "A werewolf? Are you sure about that?"
"Very sure, I guess you weren't with Carlisle the last time there were werewolves here in Forks?"
"No. I hadn't found him yet." Alice was still lost in thought. Suddenly, her eyes widened. "Your best friend is a werewolf? How long has this been going on?"
"Not long," She said, my voice sounding defensive. "He's only been a werewolf for just a few weeks."
She glowered. "A young werewolf? Even worse! Edward was right you're a magnet for danger. Weren't you supposed to be staying out of trouble?"
"There's nothing wrong with werewolves," I grumbled, stung by her critical tone.
"Until they lose their tempers. Look at what happened to you."
"What do you mean..." Bella looked between me and Alice, waiting for an explanation.
Alice looked at me and decided to change the subject. She shook her head sharply from side to side. "Leave it to you, Bella. Anyone else would be better off when the vampires left town. But you have to start hanging out with the first monsters you can find."
"No, Alice, the vampires didn't really leave not all of them, anyway. That's the whole trouble. If it weren't for the werewolves, Victoria would have gotten me by now. Well, if it weren't for Jake and his friends, Laurent would have gotten me before she could, I guess, so "
"Victoria?" she hissed. "Laurent?"
Bella then started telling Alice about everything that had happened that had happened over the past few months that she and the rest of the Cullens that had been gone, skipping over the first part.
Our leaving didn't do you any good at all, did it?" Alice murmured.
"That was never the point, though, was it? It's not like you left for my benefit."
Alice scowled at the floor for a moment. "Well... I guess I acted impulsively today. I probably shouldn't have intruded."
"Don't go, Alice," Bella whispered as her fingers locked around the collar of her white shirt and began to
hyperventilate. "Please don't leave me." At that, I rolled my eyes and went into the kitchen and began to fix dinner for me, Charlie, and Bella. I knew that my cell phone would be ringing any minute since I haven't seen Sam since our small make-out session this morning
The house phone rang.
"That has to be Charlie," I heard Bella get to her feet and come into the kitchen, dragging Alice with her.
"Charlie?" She answered the phone.
"Jake!" I'm sure that Sam had already sent one of them by the house to see if Bella was safe and where I was.
"I'm fine. We're fine." Bella shortly responded. She then hung up the phone and groaned. "That's gonna be a problem."
"They aren't excited that I'm here."
"Can you blame them?" I interjected into the conversation.
"Katie! There's no need to be so harsh." Bella started clinging on Alice, as if she was afraid she was gonna leave.
"Whatever. You want to welcome them back after everything's that happened? Then fine." I cut the stove off then grabbed my keys. "But, I'm not." Without saying another word, I stormed out of the house and got in my car before I could change my mind.
As soon as I got home, I was met by Sam at the door. His arms encased me and pulled me close.
"How are they doing?" I rubbed his back, hoping it would help comfort him.
"Sue hasn't accepted that it's happened yet. Seth's calmed back enough and he's staying with her. Leah won't calm down, especially…"
"Once she found out about the imprint…" I finished for him.
"Paul had just phased and he is terrible about controlling his thoughts about Emily." Sam explained.
"When's the funeral?"
"Charlie's coming back down in the morning to help Sue with the arrangements." With no other words, Sam and I laid on the couch and just enjoyed the comfort that our presences provided each other.
We stayed like that the entire night and most of the morning. I knew that we had other things that we had to attend to but neither one of us made a move to get up. I couldn't imagine how Sue was feeling right now. Yesterday, she woke up with her husband beside her and now, she's waking up alone.
"I love you." Sam softly kissed my forehead, making me almost completely melt. A wave of emotion came over me and I pressed my lips against his and got as close as I could to him. He kissed me back with as much passion as I was putting forth. Before I knew it, clothes were coming off and I knew that this time, we wouldn't be interrupted.
