A/N: I just wanted to start by saying that I'm sorry if I've disappointed anyone with this fic. I'm 15 years old, busy with school, so it's been difficult to write. Also, I'd like to thank people who do read and enjoy this story. You're awesome. Enjoy!
Finn grunted with effort as he carried one of Santana's heavy boxes out of the elevator. With it being the weekend, Santana had decided to officially move out. Finn had packed all of her things into boxes for her, and now he was carrying them down to the car for her while she read a magazine in his apartment. (She had just gotten her nails done and didn't want to ruin them.)
Finn was glad that Santana was moving out though. It would finally give him the chance to get some closure from the relationship, and he hoped that he would soon be ready to move on. Besides, there was the added bonus of never having to see Santana again.
The doorman to Finn's building opened the door for him, smiling politely though not offering to give him a hand. Finn struggled through the door and searched for Santana's car. Of course, she had parked it a little way down the street from the entrance. Finn was already out of breath and his arms were beginning to ache from the heavy box. The box also obstructed Finn's view of the path in front of him, only just being able to see any oncoming pedestrians from over the top of the box.
As Finn continued his walk down the street, he didn't see a particularly small member of society walking towards him. He suddenly bumped into something, (someone, to be more accurate), hearing them curse under their breath and drop whatever they were holding.
Surprised by the event, Finn lowered the box onto the ground so that he could see what had happened. His mouth dropped open in surprise when he saw Rachel Berry, with an angry look on her face, staring back at him.
"Finn! What the hell?" She said loudly, bending down to pick up her phone, keys and purse which she'd dropped.
"I am so sorry!" Finn said honestly, bending down to help Rachel.
They both reached for Rachel's phone at the same time. Finn reached it first, causing Rachel to grab his hand. Instead of letting go right away, she looked up at Finn to make eye contact.
"Don't worry about it." Rachel assured him, smiling at him and letting go of his hand. They both stood up straight again, leaving Finn's box on the floor. "Though may I ask why you're walking along a busy New York street with a huge cardboard box?"
"I'm helping Santana move out of my apartment." Finn informed her, running a hand through his hair.
Rachel's eyebrows shot up. "Oh, I'm sorry." She looked down at the floor awkwardly.
"You're sorry? For what?"
"Well..." Rachel looked around, not really having an answer. "I don't know, I'm just sorry that Santana cheated on you, and I'm sorry that you found out because of me."
"Rach, it's her who should be apologising, not you." Finn assured her.
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"Are you seriously apologising for apologising now?" Finn quirked his eyebrow at Rachel and pulled his signature half-smile.
Rachel laughed at herself. "I guess I am. Sorry." Realising she'd made the mistake again, Rachel shook her head at herself. Finn began laughing, cute dimples appearing on his cheeks. "Anyway," Rachel continued. "How are you doing? You know, with the break up."
"I'm OK." Finn shrugged. "It's a little weird after spending so long with her, but I'm looking forward to having some time on my own."
"Well, if you ever need to talk, you know where to find me."
"Thanks." Finn smiled, looking down at his hands. "Oh! This is yours." Finn handed Rachel the phone that she had dropped. "I'm sorry if I broke anything."
Rachel took the phone from Finn, examining it. "No, it's unscathed." She held up the phone as proof. "So, you should probably be getting back to moving Santana's boxes." Rachel began to back away slowly.
"Wait!" Finn grabbed Rachel's wrist before she could properly walk away. It wasn't even a conscious thought that told him to do it, it was an impulse, a reflex. He found talking to Rachel comforting. He didn't want her to leave so soon. "What are you doing tomorrow?"
Rachel frowned at him, perfectly hiding her racing heartbeat with a confused expression. "Nothing... why?"
"Well, some friends of mine have monthly bowling sessions which Santana and I usually attend. Needless to say, Santana isn't coming any more, so we need an extra player. So I was wondering..."
"If I would go bowling with you?" Rachel finished for the nervous-looking Finn. Finn nodded his head yes. "I don't know... I've never been bowling before."
Finn's mouth dropped open. "You've never been bowling? That's it. You have to come!"
"But I don't know how to bowl." Rachel countered, testing whether or not Finn actually wanted her there.
"I'll teach you!" Finn said enthusiastically. "Look, if you've never been bowling, we can't be friends."
"Then I'm definitely not going." Rachel joked, laughing at the mock hurt look on Finn's face. "I'm kidding." She clarified. "I'd love to join you."
Finn smiled at his victory. "Then I'll text you the details."
"Finn! Are you even listening?"
Finn reluctantly moved his eyes away from the door and brought them to the Asian man in front of him. "Of course I am." He said, sitting up straighter and glancing at the door once again.
Rachel was late. Only by fifteen minutes, but still late. Finn was worried that she wasn't going to turn up, or had forgotten. Or maybe she had had a particularly wild Saturday night and was so hung over that she wasn't even out of bed yet. No, she's not that bad. Finn tried to convince himself. But what if she was that bad? That was why Finn had been staring at the door to the bowling alley since he had arrived.
"Finn!" The Asian man, who was Finn's friend Mike Chang, snapped his fingers in front of Finn's face to get his attention.
"What?" Finn asked innocently, looking at his friend.
"What did I just say to you?"
"Oh... Uh..." Finn hurriedly tried to backtrack the conversation, only to realise he hadn't heard a word.
"See! You aren't listening to a word I'm saying." Mike sighed and leant back against his seat, looking slightly annoyed.
"I'm sorry, I was just distracted." Finn apologised, glancing back at the door as someone entered. Unfortunately, it was just some kid.
"I know. You're worried that what's-her-name stood you up."
"Her name is Rachel Berry," Finn informed him. "And she's late."
As the door opened again, Finn looked over, expecting to be disappointed again. However, this time he was relieved as the short brunette he'd been waiting for entered. With a smile, Finn stood up and began to walk towards Rachel.
"Finn!" She called when she spotted him. "I'm sorry I'm late."
"It's fine, don't worry about it." Finn brushed off casually. How was it possible for a girl to look so attractive wearing jeans and a t-shirt? "How about you get some bowling shoes and come over to meet us when you're done? We're on lane 9."
Rachel nodded her head and headed towards the desk to rent out some shoes. Finn turned around and walked back to where his friends were waiting for him. For some reason, he felt nervous about introducing Rachel to his friends. What if they didn't like her because of her reputation as a party girl? It shouldn't bother Finn as much as it was doing. Finn had met a few of Rachel's friends already, and he didn't really fit in with them. If Rachel didn't fit in with his friends, then how long would their friendship realistically last. Finn pushed his worries out of his mind. He hadn't even known Rachel that long.
"So she's the wild child you were telling us about?" Mike asked when Finn got back. "She looks pretty harmless and innocent to me."
"Don't be fooled." Finn replied, looking over to the friendly-looking girl that was putting on the rented shoes. She had a disgusted look on her face as she did. "She may be small, but she has a big personality."
Mike just shrugged and looked over to where Rachel was walking over to them. When she arrived, she smiled at the group of strangers and stood next to Finn.
"Guys, this is my friend Rachel Berry," Finn introduced, indicating to the girl next to him. "Rachel, these are my friends. There's Mike Chang; Tina Cohen-Chang; my brother, Kurt Hummel; my brother's boyfriend, Blaine Anderson; Quinn Fabray; and Sam Evans." Finn pointed to each member of the group as he said their name.
"Nice to meet you all." Rachel said with a small wave.
"So, we're going to play against each other in two teams of four. It'll be the blue team against the red team." Finn explained.
"Which is why you told me to wear a blue t-shirt." Rachel guessed, looking up at Finn with a raised eyebrow.
"Exactly. As you can see, the blue team consists of me, you, Sam and Tina. The red team is Quinn, Mike, Kurt and Blaine." The group divided itself so that one team was on one side of the bowling lane, the other was on the other. "Shall we get started?"
Deciding that the blue team was up first, Finn stood up and selected a ball. On his first roll, he knocked down seven of the pins, with three left standing. On his second roll he only managed to knock down one of them, sighing at the two left standing.
"Come on, Finn. You can do better than that!" Sam said as Finn took a seat between him and Rachel.
"I just need to get into the flow." Finn defended himself with a small laugh. "I'll do better next time."
"You better or they're gonna kick our asses!" Sam said, watching as Mike on the other team got a strike.
"Rach!" Mike called as he celebrated. "You're up."
Suddenly feeling nervous, Rachel turned to Finn. "Help me?" She said, begging him with her eyes.
"Sure." Finn stood up, pulling Rachel up behind him. He walked over to the various balls in a variety of colours. "You like pink, right?" He asked, picking up the pink one when Rachel nodded.
Finn walked over to where Rachel stood at the top of the lane. "You put your fingers in the three holes." Finn instructed, holding the ball in a way that made it easy for Rachel to take.
"And how many other people have put their fingers in those wholes?" Rachel asked, staring at them but not making a move to grab them.
"I don't know." Finn shrugged, smirking slightly. "Hundreds, probably."
Rachel smiled a disgusted smile. "Lovely." Sarcasm dripped off the word as she put her fingers in the holes as instructed.
"OK." Finn turned her around to face the pins. "You've got to roll this ball down the lane, hopefully knocking down all ten pins at the end of the lane. Just like you saw me do, but... better."
Rachel giggled and held the ball up. "Here goes." She said as Finn stepped back.
Rachel took a step forward and swung the ball, releasing it with very little power. The ball slowly rolled a few feet before veering off course and landing in the gutter. Rachel frowned and turned to face Finn, the blue team looking disappointed.
"I suck." She stated, taking another ball for her second roll.
"It was your first roll, just do better this time." Finn said, causing Rachel to glare at him.
Her second roll was better than the first. She gave it more power, which meant it rolled faster and stayed in the lane longer. However, the final result was the same. The ball eventually veered off course and ended up in the gutter.
"I'm going to make us lose." Rachel said, pouting slightly as she walked back to her seat.
"Maybe," Finn said with a wry smile. "But it's your first time playing, so we'll forgive you."
Rachel narrowed her eyes jokingly and playfully nudged Finn with her elbow. Finn frowned and defensively brought his hand up to his arm where Rachel had hit him.
"Wow, someone's aggressive today."
Rachel punched his arm softly. "Shut up." She tried to sound serious but she couldn't keep the smile off her face. "Anyway, I didn't know you had a brother." Rachel said, indicating to Kurt.
"Well, he's my step-brother." Finn informed her. "But he may as well be my brother. We're pretty close." Rachel smiled at that, finding it nice that Finn was a family man. "What about you: do you have any siblings?"
"I wish." Rachel said with a sigh. "But I'm the only Berry-child. My fathers are gay so I'm actually a test-tube baby, I guess. My Dad's mixed sperm so I we don't know which is my actual father, not that it matters."
"What about your mom? Do you know her?" Finn asked, risking asking a question that was too personal.
"Yes, I met her in high school. Her name's Shelby Corcoran. We talk occasionally, but we're not too close. It's not like she raised me or anything."
Finn was surprised at that strange structure of Rachel's family, but he nodded along like it was normal. When it came to his go again, he only managed to knock nine pins down, which wasn't good for him and his past abilities. Only Sam had so far managed to get a strike on the blue team so far, meaning the reds were winning.
"Damn it." Finn cursed himself, collapsing next to Rachel as Mike from the red team took his turn.
"You did well!" Rachel said, not understanding what Finn was so upset about.
"Not well enough." Finn said as he laughed at himself. "I'm going to go get a drink, you want anything?"
"Just a water, please." Rachel smiled at him as he stood up and began to walk away.
When Rachel turned back to the lane, Mike had managed to get yet another strike. His team all jumped up and high-five'd him in celebration. Suddenly feeling very competitive, Rachel stood and strode over to the ball wrack. Picking up her trustworthy pink ball, she made her way to the top of the lane.
Focusing hard on the pins in front of her, Rachel carefully rolled the ball, watching as it slowly rolled forward. Rachel sighed in frustration as the ball swerved again, resulting it falling into the gutter. She turned around, storming over to the ball wrack for her second roll. She was now determined to knock down at least one pin. This time, she would do it.
"Hey, Rach." Before Rachel could throw the ball, Sam came appeared next to her, smiling nicely. "Would you like a couple of tips before your next roll?"
Rachel smiled at the sweet thought, sighing in relief at being offered help. "That would be great, thank you."
"Are you right-handed?" Sam asked, standing closer to Rachel. Rachel nodded so he continued. "Then aim a little to the right of the centre." Sam instructed, pointing out to where he meant. "Also, it would be better if you got a run-up, only don't run. Walk first so you get a bit more power on the ball. And swing your arm back first and release it when it's just in front of you. You'll get more power so it hopefully won't roll into the gutter." Sam flashed her a smile.
"Thank you, I'll try that." Rachel smiled gratefully.
Sam patted Rachel's shoulder and took a few steps away from her to give her room. Following Sam's advice, Rachel walked forward, swinging the ball and releasing it a little to the right of the centre. Rachel watched as the ball went rolled forward, quicker this time. The ball still swerved to the side, but definitely not as much as last time. The ball avoided the gutter and knocked down five of the pins.
With an excited shriek, Rachel turned and leapt at Sam, hugging him tightly. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" She said, obviously very excited. She knew that five would have been disappointing for some people. But it was five more than she's ever gotten before.
"Your welcome." Sam said, smiling as he squeezed Rachel and then let her go.
As Rachel pulled away, she spotted Finn standing nearby, staring at her and Sam. He had a shocked look on his face that he tried to mask with a smile. Rachel was too happy to think about it too much.
"Finn! I knocked down five pins!" Rachel said, giggling happily.
Finn looked from Rachel to Sam. Sam's arm came down and he put his hand on the small of Rachel's back, a move that didn't go unnoticed by Finn. "That's awesome." Finn pulled his half-smile as best he could.
"And it's all thanks to Sam." Getting excited again, Rachel turned to Sam, placing a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you!"
"Your welcome." Sam said, chuckling happily. He pulled Rachel into his side, wrapping his arm around her.
Finn watched them, feeling a strange feeling in his chest that he didn't understand. He suddenly wished that it was him with his arm around Rachel, not Sam. Ignoring the feeling before he could think about it too much, Finn sat down on his seat, placing down the drinks he had just got onto the table.
"Rachel seems nice." Kurt said to Finn over the table. After the bowling game, the group had decided to order a pizza and sit in a booth. Finn's team lost the game, so they had to pay for the pizza.
"Yeah, she's alright." Finn said absent-mindedly. Rachel was sitting at the other end of the table, chatting happily to Sam, Mike and Tina. More to Sam than the others.
"Well you sound enthusiastic." Kurt said sarcastically. "In a bad mood because you lost?" He asked mockingly.
"Sure." Finn shrugged, taking a bite of pizza.
"Don't be a sore loser, Finn." Quinn, who was sitting next to him, laughed slightly. "You win almost every game we play."
"I'm not a sore loser." Finn admitted, glancing to Rachel's end of the table. "I'm just distracted with making sure Rachel's OK."
"She's fine." Kurt brushed off, without even looking towards her. Her laughing was all he needed to hear. "She makes friends easily. She's not stopped talking for the past half hour."
"She hasn't said a word to me." Finn mumbled, staring at his plate.
"Aw, is Finn jealous?" Kurt said in a mocking tone, laughing to himself.
"Of course not!" Finn said defensively. "Why would I be jealous? We went on one date and I was the one who told her that we should just be friends." Finn looked back down at his pizza, not having much of an appetite. "I just think it would be nice if she had spoke to me, you know, seeing as I invited her and everything."
"I'll take your word for it." Kurt replied. Unsure of whether Kurt was being sarcastic or not, Finn thought it best not to argue.
When the bill came, Finn instructed that all his team owed $12 each for the pizzas that most people had shared in two's. He collected money from Tina, putting money in himself, then walked over to Sam and Rachel. Rachel took out her purse, ready to pay her part until Sam put his hand over hers.
"Don't worry." Sam told her with a polite smile. "I'll pay for you."
"Are you sure? You don't need to." Rachel argued.
"It's fine." Sam brushed off. "I don't mind. Call it a beginner's treat."
Rachel smiled gratefully and let Sam give $24 to Finn. Finn took the money, suddenly annoyed at Sam's attempt at chivalry. As Finn gave in the money, the rest of the table stood and began to walk to the exit.
He walked behind Sam and Rachel, who apparently had exchanged numbers. Rachel was going to be taking him to the top of the Empire State building because Sam had never been. That was just what Finn got from the five minutes he was listening.
"I'll call you soon." Sam said to Rachel as he was preparing to leave.
"I look forward to it." Rachel grinned.
After a moment of the pair looking at each other, Sam turned and began to walk away, casting one last look over his shoulder at Rachel. When he was out of sight, Rachel turned to Finn.
"Thank you so much for inviting me today. I actually had a great time." Rachel said honestly.
Finn felt a little annoyed that she hadn't talked to him sooner, but he smiled anyway. "No problem. I'm glad you came."
"Sorry we lost." Rachel said with a laugh. "I might force some of my friends to come practice with me so I'm ready for next time."
"So you're coming next time?" Finn said.
Rachel seemed to panic, realising that she hadn't actually been invited yet. "I'm sorry, I just meant-"
"Don't worry. You're welcome to come any time." Finn interrupted, laughing at the way Rachel panicked.
An embarrassed smile came on her face as she stared at the floor. "Your friends are really nice people." She told Finn.
"Yeah, they're cool." Finn shrugged.
"I should get going." Rachel smiled apologetically at Finn. "See you soon, though?"
"Of course." Finn said, pulling his half-smile.
Rachel stood still for a second, seeming to hesitate on what to do. She then stood on her tip-toes and pulled Finn into a hug. Slightly surprised, Finn wrapped his arms around Rachel and squeezed. He inhaled her sweet scent, that even after hours in a bowling alley, still managed to remain nice. Finn was the first to pull away after what seemed as a normal hug-length.
"Goodbye, Finn." Rachel said, beginning to back away.
Finn waved at her as she turned away and walked down the street from him. He stayed still, watching until Rachel was around the corner and out of sight. What was he going to do about that girl?
