A/N: I'd like to thank you all for the reviews on the last chapter. Each one brought a smile to my face! I especially loved those of you who seemed so shocked that I'm only 15 years old. They meant a lot to me.
I'm sorry, but this is a bit of a filler-chapter which has annoyed me a little, though I'm going to post the next chapter ASAP.
Anyway, I postponed 2 essays to write this chapter so I hope you enjoy it!
Rachel was woken up by the shrieking noise of her ringing phone. After the amount of alcohol she had drunk the previous night, the sound was amplified and deafening, rattling throughout her head and leaving a sharp pain behind. With a groan, she rolled over, reaching out for the phone on her bedside table. She didn't open her eyes, causing her to knock over what she could only guess was some moisturiser; then causing her alarm clock to crash to the ground. Wincing at the crash that sounded like an explosion to her, Rachel's finally got her hand on her phone. Clicking the answer button, she brought the hand to her ear.
"Hello?" She said, her voice coming out croaky, possibly from shouting over loud music at the party she attended the night before. She cleared her throat, hoping next time she spoke it would come out clearer.
"Hey, is this Rachel?" The voice from the other end of the line asked. Rachel frowned, slowly sitting up in her bed. The voice was familiar, she just couldn't place it.
"Yes..."
"This is Sam. Sam Evans. Finn's friend from last week. I don't know if you remember me."
Rachel smiled at how he would think she wouldn't remember him. "Of course I remember you. It's good to hear from you."
"Well, I wanted to call sooner but I've been so busy with work. If only crime rates in New York were lower." Sam joked, reminding Rachel that he was a policeman, just like Finn. "You sound tired, did I wake you?"
"Uh... yes, actually." Rachel forced her eyes open into a squint, looking over to her bedside table to look at the time. Remembering that she had knocked off her alarm clock, she sighed and closed her eyes again. "Is it early?" She asked Sam.
"About 12:30." Sam informed her, amusement lacing his voice.
"Well, I had a late night." Rachel defended herself, laughing slightly.
"I was actually calling to see if you wanted to go for a coffee. I really enjoyed talking to you at bowling and would love to chat again."
Rachel smiled into the phone, happy that she impressed someone. "That would be great. How about I shower and get ready and meet you in an hour."
"Sure, I have a report to finish as well. You know the coffee shop on Sullivan Street?" Sam asked.
"I know the place."
"Meet me there in an hour?"
Finn came back from patrolling the streets and went into the men's locker room. He had an hour long lunch break and decided to get into some comfier clothes. Changing into some jeans and a blue and white plaid shirt, he put his uniform in his locker and sat on the bench in the centre of the room while he tied his shoes.
Behind him, Sam Evans was standing by his open locker, looking at his reflection in the mirror on the locker door. Finn had said hi to him when he had first entered, though they were now in silence. Finn just couldn't think of anything to say and had felt awkward around Sam ever since their bowling trip when Sam had blatantly flirted with Rachel.
Finn heard Sam spray himself with deodorant, then a couple of minutes later, spraying himself with cologne. Finn turned to face him, finally finding a conversation-starter.
"Someone you trying to impress?" Finn smirked, watching as Sam began to fix his hair using the tiny mirror.
"I wouldn't say I'm trying to impress her... but, sort of." Sam said with a nonchalant shrug, still studying his reflection.
"Her?" Finn repeated, quirking an eyebrow in the blonde's direction. "Is this anyone I would know?"
"It is actually." Sam said, his voice suddenly with interest. "You know that chick Rachel? You brought her bowling the other week."
Finn paused, looking away from Sam for a moment. His chest had suddenly gone tight with a feeling of... jealousy? Why was Sam meeting Rachel? Why was he trying to impress her? Why did it bother Finn so much? It's not like Finn and Rachel had anything going on, and besides, Finn had told her that he just wanted to be friends. So this shouldn't be a problem.
"I know her, sure." Finn nodded, trying to sound as at-ease as possible. "Why, have you got a date with her?"
"It's not exactly a date, per se." Sam said, though Finn was aware of how slowly and delicately he was putting it. It was more than just friends getting together.
"The what would you call it?" Finn asked, trying not to pry.
Sam closed the door to his locker and faced Finn, a confused look on his face. "I don't know. Friends meeting up to see if there's any romantic spark between them."
Finn felt his chest tighten again. He wanted to tell Sam not to go. To cancel on Rachel and not see her again. But he didn't know why he felt this way. He and Rachel were just friends, nothing more. Friends were OK with each other dating other people, right?
"Wait, this doesn't bother you does it?"
Yes. An annoying voice in Finn's head answered, though the words that came out of his mouth were, "Bother me? Why would it bother me? Rachel and I are friends, she can date who she likes."
"Great." Sam grinned, grabbing his jacket and putting it on.
"So, where are the two of you meeting?"
"That coffee shop on Sullivan Street. "
"The one that I showed you a couple of weeks ago?" Finn asked, feeling a burst of anger in his veins. Sam thinks it's acceptable to take his girl and his favourite coffee shop? Shut up, Finn. He told himself. Rachel is not your girl, and you don't own the coffee shop.
"That's the one." Sam nodded, beginning to walk towards the door.
Just the thought that Sam was going to walk out of the door and meet Rachel to 'see if there was a romantic spark' was almost unbearable to Finn. He felt the urge to stop this, to not let this happen. It was ridiculous, he knew, but he suddenly lost all coherent thoughts and control of his body.
"Wait!" He shouted, causing Sam to turn in surprise. "What a coincidence. I was actually going to grab a cup of coffee there myself."
Finn followed Sam into the coffee shop, immediately glancing around the room in search of Rachel. He spotted her sitting in the corner of the room at a small, circular table. She looked towards the door expectantly as it opened, smiling broadly at Sam as he entered. Then her eyes landed on Finn, and her happiness morphed into surprise.
Sam and Finn weaved their way through the tables until they reached Rachel. She was still looking questionably at Finn when he arrived, though tried her best to be polite by smiling. She looked great in her casual clothes, her impossibly brown eyes being enhanced by a small amount of mascara on her lashes.
"Hey there." Sam greeted Rachel happily, kissing her on the cheek.
"Hi." Rachel grinned her usual cheery smile. "I didn't realise you were joining us, Finn."
Finn opened his mouth to reply, though was cut off by Sam before any words could form. "Oh, he isn't staying. He just wanted to grab a coffee and say hi. Right, Finn?"
Finn looked in surprise at Sam, pulling a polite half-smile. "Right." He confirmed, looking at the unreadable expression on Rachel's face.
"Well, hey." Rachel said with a shrug, watching as Sam took a seat across from her. "It's nice to see you, anyway." She added, not wanting to sound too eager to rid of him.
"Actually, there was something I wanted to ask you." Finn improvised, his inexplicable jealousy forcing the lie from his mouth. He ignored the sudden look of surprise that Sam cast toward him. "It's my birthday this Saturday," He informed her. "and I'm having a little party at my apartment,"
"Really? You never mentioned that." Sam interrupted, looking at Finn suspiciously.
"It wasn't that long ago that I decided to have the party," Finn admitted. You're not kidding. He thought to himself, knowing it was a pretty big understatement. "Anyway, I wanted to invite you."
"What, just me or...?" Rachel asked, glancing awkwardly at Sam.
"Both of you." Finn said reluctantly. This was obviously a great idea.
"I'd love to come." Rachel said happily. "But I can't believe that you didn't tell me it was your birthday sooner."
"Well, I never really make a big deal for birthdays." Finn shrugged.
"I really can't wait, Finn." Rachel smiled. "Could you text me the details? You know, time, address, dress code? And I guess I'll see you Saturday."
Finn smiled, saying goodbye to Rachel and Sam and quickly buying himself a coffee that he wasn't in the mood for. He waved to them as he left the shop, waiting until he was a block away before he pulled out his phone. Dialling the familiar number, he held the phone to his ear.
"Hello?" His brother's voice answered.
"Hey, Kurt. It's me." Finn said through the phone, knowing he could rely on his brother with a problem like this.
"Finn, to what do I owe this honour?"
"I need to ask you a favour." Finn replied. "You know how it's my birthday this Saturday?"
"Of course. It's the top of my priority list."
Finn ignored the sarcasm lacing his brother's voice. "Well, I need you to throw me a party."
There was a small pause on the other end of the line. Just as Finn was about to ask if his brother had heard him, the reply came through the phone, "I thought you'd never ask."
A/N: My apologies that this had to be a filler-chapter. I'll try my best to get the next chapter up in a week or so.
Also, what would you like to see happen at the party? Leave me a review and let me know, if you're lucky, I just might include it.
