I have a lot ahead of me in the next six weeks. Just yesterday I flew up to New York City at 4 in the morning to fly back home at 6 at night only to get home very late and crash. I wrote this chapter on the plane ride to lease excuse any errors it may I have. I will read over it again but I have still exhausted.
"But how... How could you know my real name?"
When we last saw you we were at a Mexican stand off. In case you can't tell, I'm Coin. Carmella triumphantly opened her notebook and pulled out a pen from her skirt pocket.
"Because I have... THE EYE OF THE TIGER!"
Okay, she didn't say that. I wish she did.
"What do you want with Kidd Lelliet," Carmella challenged.
The girl, Matsuri, blushed wildly when her eyes suddenly dulled. Now, this is just my observation, Carmella is no beauty queen but standing next to Matsuri, she could be Miss Freaking Universe. Matsuri was short and round and had a pointy nose and freckles. She was just all around awkward. And then her eyes dulled, and I had to wonder what she was doing when her mouth twitched slightly as if she were quietly speaking. And then it happened; she straightened her posture and removed her glasses.
"I've already said it: I am in love with Kidd Lelliet."
Was her voice deeper? I mean sure her voice was sexy now, but it really didn't match the visual. If anything, it made her even more awkward. So I looked to Kidd who was watching her, it was obvious he couldn't care less about what she was saying. I of course started laughing and pointing, not that she could see or hear me.
Carmella on the other hand only smiled with that cute fang of hers, "I'll have you know now that I have no respect for high school sweet hearts or anything like that. Still I can't help but find you completely adorable so I'll forgive you."
Kidd didn't understand it and neither did Matsuri. Anguish looked extremely pissed for some reason. She watched Kidd with close attention, closer than any Shinigami normally would, so I floated over with an evil grin and a hand over my mouth to keep me from cracking up, "looks like you've still got some snap in those old vines."
She glared at me and started to whip me with said vines. It hurt but was totally worth it.
Carmella closed her notebook and approached Matsuri, who was returning back to her original likeness, "Hey, look he's all yours. You and I have the same mission, to protect him. It's kind of like I'm Mulan and you're Chien Po and he's all of China. You get what I'm saying?"
"Why do I have to be Chien Po?"
"It's not really important anyway," she quickly said taking Matsuri's Death Note and doing a triple back flip back to Kidd, "Kidd she's working with Fate, take this."
He took the notebook from her hands, enabling him to see Fate now. Matsuri screamed and tried to run to them to get her Death Note back, but Carmella tossed her Death Note to Kidd, who caught it amazingly, and she picked up her bat and prepared to swing it right into the other girl's skull.
Her eyes changed, and her smiled was now twisted and demented. To a Shinigami I'd call it pretty hot, but don't get the wrong idea, I have no intention of losing my life for some human. Matsuri froze as the metallic weapon came down at incredible speed, ready to bash her skull in when-
"STOP!"
Carmella stopped, her face returning to normal. Matsuri didn't take her eyes off of Carmella, she shook and trembled and cried. Carmella let the bat rest on her shoulder as she turned to face Kidd.
"What?"
"She hasn't done anything to us yet!"
She stared at him, unimpressed, "well sure, nothing worth noting, but letting her go now won't do anything but hurt us later."
He shook his head furiously, "she hasn't done anything to me, she's just some stupid kid who got mixed up with some Shinigami. It's not her fault."
Carmella was very unimpressed, still she faced Matsuri again, and shoved her foot into her chest causing her to fall over, "Hey I'm keeping your Death Note, little girl."
The girl only whimpered on the ground. The Tiger walked casually back to Kidd and picked up her death note, "the other one is yours, I don't need it."
Kidd nodded and looked through it to find his handwriting inside. Then that's Key's Death Note...
"THAT'S IT!" I shrieked.
The two humans turned to me and so did Anguish, "what are you talking about?"
"Hey! Fat girl! Who have you this Death Note? It was Fate right!?"
Then I realized she still can't see or hear me.
"Carmella! Quick!"
She fiddled with her bat, "Yo! Uru Tomoe!"
The girl twitched, "... So you really do have the eyes..."
Carmella rolled the girl into her back with we foot, "hey, what's the name of the Shinigami that gave you this notebook? Was it Fate?"
She whimpered again, keeping silent. It was obvious her loyalty to Fate was more powerful than her love for Kidd. Wait, what did that Espier kid say? I floated over to Kidd.
"Hey Kidd, you know Espier right?"
His eyes widened and I continued, "He told me to tell you it was cool being your friend or something along those lines. I'm not the spry young chicken I once was, these old bones and brains are so unreliable these days."
Kidd watched me, his face didn't really change, but the look in his eyes did. He looked like he was smiling? Hey Kidd, you just found out your friend still exists, what will you do now? IM GOING TO DISNEYLAND! I crack myself up. Get it? Crack? Like a bird's egg and you don't get it. Jeez, humans have no sense of humor.
Kidd quietly moved Carmella out of the way and knelt down to Matsuri. His face was so sad and he looked at her with pity.
"Matsuri, that's your name right? Please, was it Fate who brought you this notebook?"
I looked over at Anguish real quick, was she jealous at all? She only seemed to be reciting some internal monologue about the magic of kindness or something. I should make a mental note not to hang around Kidd, especially if it means going soft like Key and Anguish or completely mental, in Fate's case.
Matsuri/ Uru nodded.
"So it was Fate," I exclaimed, "That's it then! She's all we need! Her and this notebook are all we need to set Key free! Then we can all go out of our way to find the missing death notes and take down Fate and stop him from whatever he's doing!"
They all stared at me, "didn't I explain this? Okay, there's a dead boy who was killed by Fate who asked me to set Key free and protect Kidd. Are you with me? I'm tired of explaining this. Espier was his name, he was so funny I couldn't help but agree to help him."
I cackled at the memory of what he said to me. All his serious talk about revenge and friendship and saving the world and stuff. He was hilarious. What a stupid human.
Kidd flipped through Key's old death note and stopped at where his writing turned into Espier's. Anguished hovered over the boy's shoulder.
"Kidd, are you alright?"
He shut the notebook and took Carnellla's bat, dropping both death notes in the process, "So it was you then!? It was you Matsuri Uru crazy chick!? You were Itachi all along without the good side!?"
He raised the bat to beat the crap out of her but a ghostly hand stopped him. Oh shit. It's Fate, and we could all see him.
"Now, now Kidd, if you're going to hit anyone why not hit me? I'm the one who killed your little friend."
His voice was like old silk, dressed in dust and age and lies. His breath reeked of blood of course, with the slightest hint of vomit. Kidd released the bat and turned to see this frightening Shinigami. He was wrinkled and had horns running down the back of his skull to his lower back and had a tattoo of an eye in his wrinkled forehead area. He was by far one of the most frightening of all the gods of death.
"Go on Kidd, aren't you angry? Wouldn't you like nothing more than to destroy me? Why not destroy the death note along with me? If it weren't for them then none of this would have happened and you could have continued your life as a normal high school student. Because of these notebooks no one will ever safe, and the people closest to you will continue to be taken away."
"Taken... Away..." Mumbled Kidd.
Fate grinned, a big, toothy, sanguine grin. His chapped lips made an audible crackling and he ground his teeth.
"Kidd! Stop it! Don't listen to him," called out Anguish.
"You know as well as I do that he can't hear you now," I responded to her.
Carmella stood in fear of this Shinigami. Fate was not only feared for his looks and common killing sprees but also for the effect he had on humans. Some called him The Devil's Silver Tongue for his ability to manipulate mortals; well I mean they used to, back when we all cared about it… like a thousand years ago. This was the first time I had ever witnessed it.
There was nothing we could do; once you made eye contact with Fate there was no escaping his power. Kidd would soon be lost forever. That its until a small black notebook fell from the sky and smacked Fate on the head.
Said Shinigami looked away up into the sky, we all did, and there was Ryuk.
"Hiya," he said, casually raising an arm.
And then another human came to the roof, Light Yagami, famed friend to Kidd Lelliet.
"Ryuk! Bring back my death note! Huh? Kidd!? And who are these other people?"
Ryuk bit into an apple, "relax Light, everyone here is in possession of a death note."
That didn't calm light at all. He ran over to where Kidd and Fate were, though he could not see Fate, and he picked up his death note.
"Hey Fate, quit messing around here, I'm in the middle of having fun and I can't have you screw it up with your uprising," groaned the popular Shinigami.
Kidd's eyes closed and he fell into Light's arms; it was more like he fell onto light. I laughed as the conscious one had trouble getting up. Kidd's eyes opened a little bit as he looked around realizing what was happening.
And then another human came to the roof, that nurse lady, "Fate, I've come to help you collect the boy- hmm I guess it can't be helped," she saw all the humans present as well as their death notes. She pulled out her own, Fate's original death note, "We'll be rid of the extras shortly." She took a pen from her pocket and put it to the paper when suddenly she stopped. She dropped her things fell to the ground.
A heart attack.
We looked around, who killed her? Fate quickly collected his notebook and we heard another squeak. Everyone turned to Matsuri who had been trying to catch her breath but she was dying.
Fate glared at her, "just die already!"
Her head dropped; before it did I caught a glimpse of her mouth moving again, was she talking to herself? Well she wasn't anymore.
Fate sighed, "such a disappointment, now you, come with me."
Kidd returned to his feet and looked at Matsuri dead and then back to Fate. He didn't say anything, but you could see he was furious.
"Fate, you killed Espier, you plan to kill Key, and you killed some stupid girl who didn't know any better, and now... You will be the one to pay!"
Fate smiled, "you want to kill me so badly? Alright, but first, riddle me this..."
Kidd is confused.
"What lies behind Heaven's Door?"
Kidd's eyes glossed over and he began to collapse when Fate caught him and spread his wings to take flight.
I looked to Carmella to help but she only stood wide eyed in fear. Then I looked to Light who had no idea what was happening. And then there was Ryuk, who was picking his nose in boredom. So that leaves only me? No wait! I looked over to Anguish, who wasn't where I last saw her? Where did she go?
"Give him back!"
I looked up at the sky where Anguish was flying at super speeds to Fate and Kidd. She sent her roots to him and they dropped dead. Fate had literally sucked the life from them. I looked over at Light again because he randomly started to talk.
"Let's see… if Kidd were awake he'd probably say," His face changed into something dopey, as if he was trying to look like Kidd, "'Woah! It's just like Baraggan Loulsenbairn from Bleach!? Wow he was actually a really cool Espada! Now I'm going to cry about Ulquiorra!' Yeah definitely something like that."
Is that really what he's thinking about right now?
I looked back up to see Anguish falling from the sky and I flew up to catch her.
"Hey that was a pretty cool fight," stated Ryuk.
What? You mean I missed it!? Fate laughed as he flew away into the clouds to a portal that appeared. In other words, he's gone to the Shinigami world. Wait, how did he do that? I thought the only way humans could travel between worlds was to die?
Carmella finally was able to move once I landed with Anguish who was a little stunned. Light was just rummaging through the death notes that were on the ground, so HE SAW THE FIGHT TOO!?
Light sighed, "So… anyone want to fill me in?"
Carmella grabbed the notes out of Light's hand and punched him in the stomach.
"What was that for!?"
She knelt down to him, "Don't ask tedious questions!"
He rolled around in pain, "I just watched Kidd get carried off by a Shinigami, how is that a tedious question?"
And suddenly another person came onto the roof. He had a loose white shirt, baggy jeans, and bags under his big eyes. He was followed by two Shinigami, who go by Hurt and Harm… wait…. ANOTHER DEATH NOTE!? AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING HERE!?
"I believe I can explain," said the dark haired man who obviously wasn't a student.
You know I'm a fairly cheery person, but I'm gonna admit now that I think about death a lot... Especially when I hear "Your Love is My Drug." Haha just kidding, that's my jam, like when I'm feeling down I put weird music like that on and go nuts and bounce back. Try it once in a while, it's fun. An alcoholic lady once told me "when you find yourself listening to the same old tune on repeat, it's time to change the song." Which basically means "when the door bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad, I simply remember y favorite things and then I don't feel so bad." Seriously, try it. It works.
P.S. THAT LAST PART YAY! I WAS REALLY CHOMPING TO TRY AND PUT HIM IN SOMEWHERE!?
