CH 24: Mourning Soul
Maka walked down the dark hallway when she suddenly was pulled by the arm and pressed against the wall, her green eyes meeting crimson ones. "Hello, little dove." Said Soul softly in her ear. She smiled happily and threw her arms around his neck. He smiled as well, wrapping his arms around her small waist and pulling her close to him.
She nuzzled her face into his neck. "I missed you so much." She said softly. "I missed you too, I'm never letting them take you again." He said, burying his nose in her sweet smelling hair. The angel nodded and hugged him a little tighter. He pulled away and kissed her gently, running his fingers through her hair.
They stood there for a moment then broke away. Maka was slightly breathless, her arms still around his neck. "I love you, little dove." Soul said softly. "I love you too." She said, just as softly. He smiled softly and kissed her forehead. She closed her eyes for a moment then opened one emerald eye and smiled sweetly. "Soul, will you take me outside now?" she asked softly.
The white haired demon grimaced but sighed. "Fine, but you must stay by me, understand?" he said sternly. She smiled happily and nodded. Colors curled around them, Maka nuzzled her face into his chest. Seconds later, hot air hit her bare back and she looked up.
They stood in a forest, the trees where black and stripped of leaves, they towered over the two, black and charred. "Where are we?" she asked. "The Dark Forest." Soul said softly. Maka let go of him and looked around. "Stay close, little dove." Said the demon. She nodded and climbed over one of the huge twisted black roots that cris-crossed on the ground.
She looked around and stopped. "Soul, look." She said softly, pointing to a beautiful white bird with gold and silver plumage. It raised it's graceful head and opened it's golden beak. It let out a beautiful sad cry then began to sing, it's song was mournful, almost heart-breaking, but it was the most beautiful thing Maka had ever heard. She wanted to know why this breath-taking bird was singing such a devastatingly beautiful song.
"It's so sad." She breathed. "We call them mourning souls." Soul said from beside her. "Their souls that have sinned but are to pure to become demons." She looked at him then the bird. "How can a sinner be pure?" she asked. "this soul stole, but it was for the sake of their family, Kami refused to take them, so I took them and turned them into something beautiful. There are other animals, fawns, horses, cats, dogs, lots of them." He said, looking at the graceful bird.
"That's awful, good but awful." Maka said. "No offence little dove, but your mom's a total bitch." Soul said leaning against a dead black tree. The angel sighed and nodded. "I know, she's a…" "Self-absorbed, power-hungry, heartless, bat-shit crazy, coocoo for coco puffs, bitch!" Soul said with a nod. Maka laughed. "Yes that." The demon smiled and chuckled. "Come on, let's go back."
