I love stories about friendship. Like friendships are something I aspire to have many of but I have yet to form any of.

I watched Fate and he watched me.

"What's a Masaya?"

"Open the door."

I stepped away from the large door, "Open it yourself!"

He was suddenly in front of me. I watched him as he opened his mouth and clamped down on his jaw, making a gross black fluid bleed out, it smelled like oil.

"Only a human with a noble soul can open it, much less touch it. But even more than that it has to be you Kidd Lelliet."

"Why am I here? How did I get to this place?"

He laughed, "Fate."

"A well played play on words," I complimented forgetting what was going on for a second.

He bowed slightly and made way so that I could see the door. Yes, I had seen the wooden door once. I was dreaming and the carvings of stars were moving as if they were falling from the skies. I felt the door call to me with no clear voice. Even so I refused to move closer to it. Fate is wrong, Fate is evil, Fate killed Espier and Matsuri. Fate was probably responsible for the deaths of my favorite anime characters!

"What's behind the door?"

He didn't answer. He only smiled with his huge block teeth.

"Not talking? Then I'm not opening," I glared.

"You can save them Kidd."

"… Save who?"

"Your friends. They wrote their names in the death note to get here and find you. You're still alive however, so you'll be able to return to earth but they'll remain here until they disappear like this sand."

"They've died?" I could feel his words try to invade my head.

He looked into my eyes,

"But if you open the door you can save them, you can save everyone and bring them home."

"I… Can save them…"

MEANWHILE

Light flew on Ryuk's back toward the Shinigami King's dark castle. They arrived, landing carefully atop.

"You ready to watch me become King," Light asked arrogantly.

Ryuk only stared at him.

"What?"

"Nothing," he said looking away.

"It's obviously not nothing, what's with the look?"

They shared in a mini stare off until the popular Shinigami decided to break the silence.

"I just can't believe you think kicking the old man around it more important than your friends."

"… WHAT!? Are you being serious right now!?"

Ryuk shrugged, eyeing his human. Light couldn't keep eye contact anymore. He made fists with his hands at his sides and looked down at his feet.

"Anguish wasn't kidding… Ryuk, why are you at the castle," groaned a third voice.

"Oh, hey Nu," said Ryuk, "Looking good baby~"

He finished it with a wolf whistle. All gazillion of Nu's eyes rolled at Ryuk's antics. HE responded by wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. She, in turn, glared at how stupid Ryuk was being in such a critical time. Light stared in disbelief at what he was seeing.

"Light, Ryuk may be stupid but he's right. I can see you wavering."

"What," said the human turning to Nu, unsure of which eye to look in.

"The Shinigami eyes can see a person's name and lifespan when shared with a human. But only as a Shinigami are you also able to see what's inside a human's heart. And your heart, Light Yagami, is changing."

"I-it's not!"

"Look into my eyes," Nu said as her eyes began to project many different memories Light and Kidd shared. He watched each moment between them unfold, his heart trembling and emotions getting the better of him. He found himself revealing a hint at a smile, but deliberately wiped it off his face.

"Well light," asked Ryuk with an assuming grin.

"Well what," Light was on the verge of breaking.

"Do you want to help your friends Light," asked Nu, delivering the finishing blow.

He paused, letting it sink in, and gave in, "I do."

"Good. Ryuk, fly Light back to Kidd. Go beyond the sands to where the old castle stands and there in the dark you must unlock Kidd's heart."

"… What?"

"I can see it! Fate is swaying Kidd to open the door! Go! Stop him and I shall gather the King!"

"Good luck getting him off his butt," said the smart ass Shinigami.

"Ryuk," she growled.

"Oh feisty! Alright, I'll be off, but I'll be back baby~"

So the pair took off while Nu groaned. She could never understand how Ryuk was a popular Shinigami. As Ryuk and Light flew back to the sands they passed L, Hurt, Harm, Misa, and Rem flying to the castle, obviously perusing him.

"LIGHT!? WHERE ARE YOU GOING!?" Screamed Misa as they passed.

"TO SAVE KIDD LELLIET!" He called back.

The Shinigami made a U-turn so they could catch up with Kira and L screamed out in delight, "FOR JUSTICE!"

"SHUT UP L!" Groaned Light as they flew to find and save Kidd. They weren't exactly the most reliable team but it was better than nothing.
