JACE POV

Off to a great start Wayland… I fall back asleep, dreaming of my new life in New York.

A buzzing from my pocket wakes me out of my hibernation. I don't even open my eyes, just grab my phone and groan.

"Hello?" I sleepily ask. I hear a scoff coming from the other end.

"Nice to know that you fell asleep. Again." Raphael scolds. How did he know that?

"Wait what? How did you… Never mind. What's up?" I stretch as far as I can in my seat. I gaze out the window. We can't be more than 30 minutes away…

"Just letting you know that the Morgensterns will be waiting for you at the gate. You remember what they look like right?" He questions. Now is my turn to scoff.

"Of course, how could I forget?" I answer, thinking about their brunette daughter.

"You're thinking about their daughter aren't you? Don't get caught up on her, Jace. I know you well enough." He warns.

"Yeah whatever, anything else boss?" I ask, knowing the term 'boss' bothers him.

"Don't call me that. And nothing else. Just," He sighs, as if exhausted by my behavior. "Don't fall asleep again." He finishes. I chuckle and we say our goodbyes. I shove my phone into my pocket and look around the plane. My eyes suddenly catch on a little girl, no older than 10, who is intensely staring at me. I smirk and watch as she quickly turns around. I see her say something to her mother and she climbs out of her seat, coming towards me. Being in first class, I have a lot of room to move around, so when she comes to my seat and asks if she can sit next to me, I gladly allow her to. Bored, I stare out the window and observe the different building skylines. I feel a little hand tug my shirt so I happily turn back to her.

"You're Jace, right?" She asks in her cute little kid voice. I genuinely smile.

"Yeah I am. What's your name?" I reply. She gives me a big toothy smile.

"I'm Sofia. I just wanted to say hi." She blushes. She does a tiny little wave, which I gladly return.

"Well, hi Sofia. How are you?" I reply. Kids are always so easy to talk to.

"I'm great! I just met you and I'm going to see you sing in New York!" She jumps up and down in her seat and I just chuckle.

"That's awesome! I'll look for you in the audience!" She shows me a huge smile. This is why I love meeting my fans. I suddenly get an idea that is sure to make Sofia's day.

"Hey Sofia, how old are you?" She quickly says 9. That means she's old enough to come backstage. "Have you ever been backstage before?" She shakes her head vigorously. I smile and pull something out of my wallet. I glance over at her parents and see then staring at us intently. I smile at them and return my attention to the child. "This is for you and your parents. Tell them to call the number and he will give you backstage passes to meet me at the show!" I hand Sofia the paper and watch her stare at it quietly. Did she not like it? She suddenly turns towards me and pulls me into a tight hug, which I gladly return. She pulls away and is smiling like a maniac. She begins to jump up and down squealing and I just laugh. Her parents call her over and she gives me a quick goodbye hug and thanks me again.

This is the side of me that the paparazzi don't show. I'm not always the cocky, sarcastic person they portray me to be. Making a kid's day great is the best payment for being famous. I glance back at the family and still see her giddy with excitement. I smile and pull on my seatbelt.

20 minutes after my encounter, we land. On the way out, I quickly see the little girl again and wave. She smiles and waves back, before leaving the plane. I text Raphael about the girl's passes on the way out, so everything is settled.

Where was the family supposed to meet me again? I scan the area by the gate. Here, right? After another quick scan, I spot 2 teenage girls on their phones. I lean against the wall and observe them. They look pretty hot… I can't finish my thought when I see the red head lift her head up from her phone. My breathe catches in my thought. Wait what? That's not supposed to happen to THE Jace Wayland. He doesn't feel those emotions. I shake my head, clearing the stupid thoughts away. It's her. Clary Fray. What do I say? Should I just walk up to her and say hi? Or just casually bump into them? I clear my head. My thoughts are driving me crazy. I decide on a simple approach: walking up to her.

I take a deep breath slowly approach them. She seems really immersed in her phone because she doesn't notice me coming. This could be interesting... I stand directly in front of her and tap her shoulder. She mutters a few profanities and angrily taps the screen.

"Stop bothering me Izzy." She snaps at her friend. 'Izzy' looks at her confused but quickly replies, "What are you talking about?" She rolls her eyes and turns back to her phone. I have to stifle a laugh because Clary looks utterly confused and annoyed at the same time. "Who-?" She didn't to finish the sentence because she gasped when she finally looked up and saw me. I put on a teasing smile.

"Who? Why, I thought you'd remember me." I do an overly dramatic bow. "I'm Jace Wayland." I smirk at her shocked face. "Nice to see you again. Your hair looks great by the way." I wink and watch as the friend stands next to her and they both gape at me. Clary is the first to recover.

"Hey! Welcome to New York! Again…" She blushes at her screw up. "Oh sorry! This is my best friend, Isabelle. She'll be living with us too." She shoves her friend and Isabelle quickly recovers. She sticks out her hand.

"Please, just call me Izzy." She smiles widely. Clary is the first to move.

"Let's go get your bags Jace!" She leads me to the baggage claim and I grab my few bags. She offers a hand and I let her take the lightest one. She expertly leads me through the airport, speeding ahead of us. I pick up the pace and walk in step with her.

"I'm guessing you have to pick up your parent's clients from the airport often?" I ask, trying to make conversation. She looks over at me and smiles.

"Yeah, but none are staying at our house like you, so this should be interesting." She smiles again but turns forward to weave around the clusters of tourists. We finally reach the exit and she begins to slow her pace. Her and Izzy come to a stop on the sidewalk and look around before glancing at each other.

"Something wrong?" I ask, curious as to why we aren't leaving. Izzy turns to me.

"Yeah, the car isn't here." She does another quick sweep of the area.

"And neither are my parents." Clary adds, before placing my bags on the ground and sprinting over to one of the of employees. I wait with Izzy as we watch Clary and the man talk. He gives her a slip of paper and she sprints back to us. Izzy raises an eyebrow and Clary just sighs. She hands the paper to Izzy and we watch as she reads it. Her face goes from confused to annoyed. Clary seems to remember that I'm here because she decided to tell me what's going on.

"When we got to the airport, Izzy and I left my parents behind because we were excited to find you." She slightly blushes then. "We thought it was weird that they didn't follow us but we didn't pay attention. They left this note with that guy over there." Izzy hands me the note just as Clary finishes speaking. What could be so wrong? I grab the paper and read.

We didn't get to tell you because you left too quickly. We had to make some final preparations at the house for Jace. We will be back for you all in a few hours. Please be respectful.

-Mom

I look back up to see Izzy and Clary whispering. Clary notices that I'm finished and takes the paper back.

"If they needed to prepare something, then that's fine, I guess." I say confused as to why they were so annoyed. Clary shakes her head.

"That's not true though. The house is spotless and perfectly ready for you to stay." She points at the first line of the note. "You see that?" I nod, waiting for the real problem. "That means that they were pissed that we left." She then points to the next one. "This one means that they needed an excuse to leave us." She finally points to the last line. "And that means that they are still pissed and this is there form of punishment." She shoves the note in her pocket. I slowly nod, still confused as to why they didn't write exactly what they meant.

"They have an interesting way of communicating with us. They never write what they truly mean. It's usually a puzzle." Izzy shrugs and turns back to Clary. "So what do we do?"

"I just tried calling Matt. No answer. They probably threatened him not to answer." She rolls her eyes, as if that's a normal thing. Maybe the Morgensterns aren't the perfect parents everyone sees them as. Izzy nods and excuses herself, calling someone on her phone. I look over to the stressed out Clary.

"Is this normal?" I curiously ask. She shakes her head and chuckles.

"It kind of is but only to us. They save their best attitude for us." She sarcastically replies. "This is probably a terrible first impression. I'm so sorry about them. Izzy and I had no idea that this would happen." She quickly apologizes. I give her a small smile.

"It's fine. I mean, I don't think you'd set up this crazy scenario just to spend time with me." I wink and she grins. At this point, Izzy is already walking back, looking more pissed than ever.

"I just called my parents. They saw Matt and your parents heading home a while ago. I asked if they could pick us up but Alec has a game in a bit, so they can't." She runs a hand through her black hair in exasperation. "Who else do we call?"

Clary suddenly perks up. She grabs Isabelle's shoulders. She is smiling wildly and neither of us know why.

"Simon!" She exclaims. Who's that? Izzy is now smiling too and they both relax. I stay quiet, not wanting to sound nosey, but Clary noticed my interest.

"Simon is our best friend. He has a car so maybe…" She starts texting this 'Simon' and squeals when he replies. "He can pick us up." She looks over at Izzy. "Thank god." Izzy comes next to me.

"We're so sorry about this Jace. We honestly wanted today to go smoothly and as planned but our parents had other ideas." She rolls her eyes. "You hungry?" I nod, noticing my growing hunger. Clary comes around her and stands with us as well.

"I thought so. We should all go out and eat. Celebrate your arrival." She winks and goes back to texting Simon.

"That'd be great. Are we going with your parents?" I ask. Clary lets out a laugh.

"Haha no, just the four of us. We can't get in any more trouble." Clary states and Izzy bursts out laughing, as if there was some inside joke involved. I chuckle at their sudden enthusiasm.

"Alright, where to? You probably know this city better than I do." I smile at Clary. She smiles back, not annoyed anymore.

"We should go to Taki's. It's not exactly fancy but… Actually, it's not fancy at all. It's a small little family diner. But it's REALLY good." She states but changes her mind. "But if you want something more expensive, then that's fine. We can go-" I cut her off with a chuckle.

"It's fine Clare-bear." I wink. "I'd like to be treated like a normal teenage guy for a while." She blushes but agrees. Her eyes begin to follow a van coming around the corner and stopping right in front of us. She sticks her tongue out and makes a silly face at the driver, who I can assume is Simon. She motions for us to follow her as she runs to the bright, yellow van. I'm riding in this? Thank god that the paparazzi doesn't know I'm here yet. I glance over at Izzy and see her blushing already. I raise an eyebrow but turn towards the van when I see a guy come out.

Simon is a bit shorter than me and has curly brown hair with glasses that make him look like a nerd. Oh god… He slides open the back of the van and grins at Clary. She runs towards him and he spins her around, before throwing her over his shoulder. She begins to pound on his back while yelling profanities but laughing. I feel a pang of jealousy as I watch them. She has a boyfriend? I hide my jealousy and smile when she looks at me. Izzy is cracking up but rolling her eyes. This is probably a normal thing. They are definitely dating. I can feel my mood slowly going sour but I just walk towards them with Izzy. Simon gives Izzy a hug, not letting Clary down. She seems to have given up by now and is hanging limply on his shoulder she see me staring and mouths 'help me'. I just chuckle and roll my eyes.

Simon finally lets her down and she dusts herself off while introducing us.

"Simon, this is Jace Wayland." Simon mumbles 'hi' but is still glaring at me. Oh jeez… He probably thinks I'm that rude person I'm shown as. Clary clears her throat and sends Simon a message with her eyes. He seems to understand because he stops glaring at me.

"Jace, this is Simon Lewis." I say a strong 'hello' before glaring at him in return. He ushers us into the van. Izzy and I sit in the back while Clary sits up front with Simon. I want to say something extremely rude but I detain myself, because Clary is here. Simon starts the car and clears his throat.

"So, where to?" He looks over to Clary and she replies with a smirk.

"We're taking Jace to Taki's." Simon smiles before driving down the crowded streets of New York.
