Chapter 11 - Ding Dong.
Bobby watched through his binoculars, even though Dean had disappeared a good ten minutes ago, he didn't want to not have his back while he was investigating a possible house full of demons. As reckless as he can be, Dean wasn't in the business of risking anyone's but his own life so he would take every precaution to not be seen, heard or captured, unless of course he thought he was invincible, then they were all screwed.
Hope made an unhappy noise in the back seat, so Bobby put the binoculars down and turned around in his seat so he could have a better look at her, reaching into the baby bag beside her chair for her pacifier his hand touched the brooch that John had created for his granddaughter. Bobby had not been able to find any curses or spells attached to the brooch and all the stones had positive, protective qualities, so it would do nothing but protect the little girl from all types of supernatural creatures and magic that she may encounter while she wore it. Bobby unhooked the latch on the back of it and attached it to her jumpsuit. "There you go sweetheart, your... Other grandpa had this made for you" Bobby wasn't sure how Sam felt about his father after everything that had happened, the feeling of abandonment for Sam must be crippling, he and Sam had been able to create a little family that was both fulfilling and surprisingly comfortable, they fit together like puzzle pieces. Sam was the son he was never able to have with his wife before she had died, forcing him into this life of hunting and Bobby himself was able to fill the gaping hole in Sam's heart where his father and brother had been before Stanford.
Movement out of the corner of his eye distracted him from his thoughts and made him turn back around in his seat and resume his spying.
Dean landed on a table breaking the legs and going down hard knocking the wind out of him and making his head spin. When his vision cleared he looked around in a panic for his brother. His eyes finally found Sam tied up by the arms hanging from a rope attached to the high beams on the ceiling. His feet, just touching the floor below them.
His brother was battered and bruised, his breaths shallow and labored like it hurt to breath. The yellow-eyed demon was looking out the window. He suddenly started talking "Your brother is special, he was supposed to be one of my elite, but then he went and got himself hurt and now, he's useless to me. His wife didn't uphold her end of the bargain and now I've come to collect" the yellow eyed demon turned and looked at Dean menacingly. "Either you bring me the girl or your brother dies"
Dean started shaking his head, breathing deeply. "No, you can't do that, you can't expect me to choose... Between you infecting my niece with your poison or you kill my brother? I.. I can't choose something like that!"
"I can, will and am expecting you to choose, NOW! or I will choose for you" the yellow eyed demon, was getting impatient and angry at being defied.
"Wait, wait, hold on!, please, let me have a minute to think" Dean said desperately.
"Fine, I'll give you fifteen minutes, to think about whether you will put your family to death or send them to a new life with me" The yellow eyed demon gave him two undesirable options.
As soon as the demon had left the room, Dean yanked his phone out and speed dialed Bobby. "Yep" Bobby said in his customary way.
"Bobby, I don't have time to explain it but I don't know what to do. The yellow-eyed demon wants me to either give Hope to him to infect or to kill Sam. Obviously I don't want to do either, but I don't know how to get out of this, he wants my decision now. I... I don't know what to do?"
"Crap!, Ok, ok ya idjit, calm down, I think I can come up with something..." Bobby said
"Mmnn Nooo" Sam mumbled, stopping the discussion.
"Sammy, Sam, what's wrong?" Dean said grabbing Sam's face with both hands looking into Sam's half closed eyes.
"Nnooo, just let im kill mmeee" Sam mumbled out through his croaky voice.
"Sammy, come on, don't say that, I'm not letting him have you OR Hope" Dean tried to reason with his obviously out of it little brother.
"Nnoo, it's better this way" Sam's eyes welled up, from either pain or resolve.
Listening to this back and forth argument, Bobby couldn't help but think that even after making it through so much in his short life, the young man on the other end of the phone trying to offer up his soul in exchange for his daughters life, didn't see the value in his own life.
"Listen Sammy, we don't have long, I'm not giving him either of you Ok?" Dean said pleadingly to his little brother.
"OK, I think I have something that might work" Bobby piped in. Explaining his idea to Dean after Sam had fallen into unconsciousness. Suddenly Dean could hear muffled yelling and scrunching sounds, Dean was yelling Bobby's name repeatedly, then hearing Hope crying hysterically, the phone hung up loudly in Deans ear.
Sam woke slowly, with bleary eyes, he must have passed out because he felt disconnected and unable to remember where he was or what had happened before passing out.
A noise from next to him made him move his head too quickly, which then made the room spin and he had to close his eyes and breath as deeply as his broken ribs would allow to calm his stomach, and his eyesight to partially clear so he could see the noise he heard was his brother, throwing his phone softly to the floor beside him, cursing, his brother had not noticed that Sam had woken up, he swore to himself and with his guard down, his hands shook. "Ddeee?" Sam whispered past his cracked lips, trying to get Deans attention.
Dean lifted his head and scrambled to his brothers side. "Sammy?, how are you doin?" Knowing that, it was a stupid question but asking out of big brotherly duty.
"I've b'n better..." Sam swallows a few times to quell the nauseous feeling about to overtake him. "Where's Hope?"
"Sammy... Ah... She's with Bobby, n' I'm sure she's fine" blinking and looking away from his brothers pain filled face.
Just then a bang, loud yelling and screaming, alerted them that they where no longer alone. Several demons, Bobby, Hope and the yellow-eyed demon came into the room. Sam's head shot up after it had hung down due to exhaustion and pain, Hope was screaming and crying in the arms of one of the demons, making Sam start mumbling and moving hopelessly in distress. "Nnooo, lev' her 'lone" he slurred out through cracked lips.
"NO! Stop it you're hurting her!" Dean yelled at the uncaring Demon holding on to his niece who yanked her arms down to stop the flailing of her arms.
"Shut up, you little brat!" The demon yelled, only making her scream and cry more, her voice sounding hoarse now.
"Enough!, give the child to her uncle, so we talk business. Then get the hell out of my sight!" The yellow eyed demon yelled at his minions, who shoved the child into Deans hands unceremoniously and stormed out of the room along with most of the other demons except two guards and the one and only yellow eyed demon. "Now that I have your attention, I need to know your decision, I've grown tired of waiting"
Dean looked down at the little girl in his arms, she had quieted down, now that she was in familiar arms, she still grumbled and she had tears in her eyes and all down her face, he caught sight of the brooch on her jump suit, noticing very small writing all around the filigree design, 'tego texi tectum' Dean read to himself, trying to figure out what it meant, silently said a prayer that it would protect her from what ever this confrontation may bring. He couldn't bring himself to think about her getting hurt, or even his brother. They were all starting to be a family again and it had healed his shattered heart and made it stronger and some would say more fragile as the bad guys would be able to use his love and affection for his expanded family against him.
"So Winchester, tell me your decision right now, or I will make it for you and then everyone dies" The yellow eyed demon said angrily, obviously at the height of his patience levels.
"Ok, I'm... look... can I make you a deal? How about I ah... Take me! You can have me, instead of them" Dean said pleadingly, ignoring Bobby's protests, Sam's moans and Hopes unhappy grumbles.
"No!, I don't want you, You weren't part of the initial deal, Sam or the girl?" Shaking his head and pacing in front of him.
"You don't want an innocent little girl, please leave her alone, hasn't she suffered enough?" Dean was panicking, trying to figure out some way of making the demon change his mind.
Suddenly, Sam started writhing in pain, like an electric shot was coursing through his body, screaming in one long sound of pain and anguish. "STOP!" Dean yelled, not able to watch or listen to the torture of his brother.
As suddenly as it had begun, it ended, Sam was breathing heavily, shaking all over and moaning as he sobbed through his pain.
"I will take the girl, now!, no questions asked, do not pass go, do not collect $200" The demon looked toward where Dean and Hope were sitting. "She is mine, I am not the bad guy here, his wife made a deal, she didn't keep it, now I will collect"
Hope was ripped from Dean's arms and flung toward the yellow-eyed demon, then stopped right in from of him, hovering in mid air, crying. "Hush child" he motioned with his hand and she moved toward the bed on the other side of the room, the demon moved with her and when she got to the bed, she was laid down softly on top. The yellow-eyed demon moved toward her, taking out his knife at the same time, slicing his hand as he went, squeezing it, to make the blood drip. He stopped in front of her and as he bend down toward her, raised his hand to droop some of the blood in her mouth as he had done to her father all those years ago, he suddenly jerked away in pain, moving away, his hand started glowing red, like fire and he started yelling "What is this!, what is happening!" The red glow moved from his hand to his arm, then his other hand started glowing, then the rest of his arm, then his legs and the rest of his body started glowing softly getting brighter and hotter and more intense as the seconds ticked by.
Dean and Bobby looked on in awe and shock. They had no idea what was happening or who was making it happen. The demon continued to glow hotter and brighter then in a white hot flash and a scream so loud they had to shield their eyes and cover their ears, he exploded into nothing. A rush of hot air moved outwards like a blast wave, with enough force to make all the furniture move, Sam swayed in his unconscious state and Dean and Bobby were pushed back into the walls and bookcases they were up against.
When the air had stopped and everything was quiet, Dean stood up and walked to wards Hope, looking over at Bobby "Are you alright?" Dean got close to Hope to check on her!, she was laying on the bed calm and with a small smile on her face when she saw her uncle. Then he saw it, the filigree design around the brooch was glowing. "Shit... Well I'll be damned" he said softly. He picked her up and walked over towards Bobby who was moving a chair under Sam's body so they could get his down from where he was hanging and lower him down onto the chair.
"How are you doin Sammy?" Dean asked gently as Bobby cut through the rope and Sam dropped like a sack of potatoes, landing with a thud onto the chair, Bobby's arms went around Sam as he was dropping, slowing his decent so didn't keep moving off the chair onto the floor.
Bobby, moved around so he was facing Sam, keeping his hand on Sam so he didn't move and to help them both know that he was no longer in danger. Bobby ran his hand through Sam's sweaty hair trying to give extra comfort, "You're alright now Sam, we gotcha Ok. The demon's gone now" moving his hand to his shoulder, still not moving his hand away, he turned his head and looked at Dean who was holding Hope close to his chest as it appeared to comfort him as well as her. All four of them were in desperate need of some time together, in a safe and secure place like Bobby's place which, had always been a second home and in some cases the only home they had ever known.
"Alright Sammy, I'm going to take you out to the car OK, then we can go home" Dean passed Hope to Bobby and then scooped him up, straightened up, straining his back but not willing to complain as Sam had been through so much worse.
Walking carefully with Sam in his arms Bobby and Hope following behind him, Dean stopped once he got to the car and motioned for Bobby to open the back door, then he leant over, intent on putting Sam in the back seat so he could stretch out, even with his long legs. He stopped short, the baby seat was in the way. He looked at Bobby and quickly said "The baby seats in the way" frustration and longing to put his heavy burden down, his arm muscles burning from holding the weight for so long.
Bobby quickly undid the baby seat and moved out of the way, while Dean positioned Sam in the back seat using his jacket as a makeshift pillow. Bobby attached the baby seat to the front bucket seat and put Hope into it where she promptly fell asleep, without Dean seeing as he was too distracted by his brother.
Once he was happy with his brothers comfort he closed the door and jumped into the front seat, closing the door and slamming it shut, he stopped when he noticed what was beside him, moving his head slowly to the side and looking at Bobby had done. There inbetween him and Bobby was Hope in her baby seat, fast asleep. "Oh hell no!" He exclaimed in a whisper. "That cannot happen, not in my baby!" Glaring at Bobby who was trying and failing to hide a smirk.
"Oh come on, it's the only place to put her, what with Sam in the back" Bobby says trying to defuse the situation but also trying not to laugh even in the dire situation they found themselves.
"Fine... Just this once and just because Sam is hurt. This never leaves this car, it never happens again and you will not tell Sam about this, you get it" Dean said attempting to not sound like a petulant child.
"I... can.. see her... from... here. You're a... total... badasssss" Sam said softly from the back seat, chuckling then coughing because of his dry throat.
"Ha ah, laugh it up... B#t%h, I'll remember that when your better" Dean said with no heat or conviction, just happy that his brother must be feeling a little better if he was able to make a joke.
"Jerk" came the almost unheard reply.
