Chapter 12 – Another Piece of the Puzzle

Sam woke to a fuzzy head, he could hear someone talking but it was all muffled like he was under water. "Mmmnnn" was all he could say, his mind still clearing out the fog. "Mmmdddeee" he tried again, then the talking stopped and he felt a hand on his forehead, soothing the hair out of his eyes, talking softly to him but he was still unable to hear actual words.

"Sammy?" Dean said softly to his little brother, who was moaning and trying to talk but only making sounds at this point. He could tell that Sam wanted to wake up but after everything that had happened, was taking longer to come around. Dean had tended to his wounds and made note of all his new bruises and some lacerations, which he had put antiseptic cream and bandages on.

"Mmmm, ah Deaaannn?" Sam was able to finally say something that sounded like his name and at four hours of unconsciousness, it was the best thing he had ever heard.

"Sammy, you back with me?" Dean said softly again to his brother, then hazel eyes opened at half-mast, blinking slowly. Sam sighed heavily and cleared his throat then nodded to Deans question.

"Dean?" Sam finally whispered "What h... happened?" Sam's head was full of muddy images and muffled voices. He couldn't put them together in a intelligible way so he could understand what had transpired before he had fallen asleep.

"Do you want the sort version or the long version?" Dean asked in a affectionate way, his brothers sleepy voice and manner reminded him of a five year old Sam, wanting to have a story read to him by his big brother.

"Hhmm, the short one. I don't think I could stay awake for the long one" Sam said blinking his eyes in a way that suggested he had mere minutes left before he succumbed to his tired bodies cry for rest.

"Sammy, the yellow eyed demon is dead. We don't know what killed him but I think it had something to do with Hopes brooch" Dean said slowly, he could tell that Sam was holding on to consciousness by a thread.

"Hope?" Sam's mind suddenly woke up a little. "Is she alright?

"Yeah Sammy, Hopes fine, the brooch protected her from what ever that Ba... Buster tried to do to her, he burned up and disappeared" Dean touched Sam's arm, soothing the younger man.

"Wow, we have to do some research on that brooch, who knows what Dad did to it" Sam says already thinking of the websites he could search through to find all the information possible on this brooch and who had made it for his father.

"No, not right now your not, Sam, your going to rest and recuperate, and maybe, tomorrow you can have your laptop so you can do your geeky thing" Dean was smiling at the end, his little brother had started to smile as well making his heart swell. "You've got broken ribs, bruises all over your body and a nasty bump on the head, which I think gave you a concussion, so I don't think you'll be doing much more than sleeping, little brother"

"Your brother's right Sam and besides I did some preliminary research on it, I couldn't find anything hinky. I wouldn't have let her wear it if there was any danger to her" Bobby said making sure that Sam knew he only had his and Hopes safety at heart.

"I know Pa but maybe we have to go through alternative means" Sam looked away from Bobby thinking more on what he could search to get a more detailed result.

Hope lifted her head from her grandpa's shoulder and looked over at her Daddy and squealed in delight when she realized he was awake. "Dada" she said and stretched toward him.

"No sweety, your Daddy is too hurt to hold you right now, how about you give Daddy a kiss so he can get some sleep" Bobby said to Hope, she seemed to understand and stopped wriggling in his arms, she leaned forward pouting her lips. Bobby got down on his knees I front of Sam, who was on his bed in the guest room covered in warm blankets and dressed in his sweats.

"Night baby girl, daddy loves you so much" Sam said to Hope, kissing her on the forehead, her cheek and nose before she pressed a slobbery kiss to his lips. "Ni Dada" Hope replied, leaving the older hunter and the young father in awe.

Sam settled down into his warm bed and closed his eyes as Bobby walked out with Hope, Dean was waiting by the open door and walked in after Bobby to see Sam blinking slower but watching him as he sat on the side on the bed by his hip.

"Sammy, How're you doing? You sore anywhere? Need pain killers? Some water? Another pillow? Anything?" Dean was rambling, as he did when he was nervous.

"That's too many questions for my foggy brain... I'm tired, sore everywhere, no pain killers, I have a bottle of water here if I get thirsty, no more pillows and you gave me everything I need already" Sam said to his brother, grabbing his hand and squeezing it. Chick flick moment be damned.

"What? What did I give you Sammy?" Dean asked not even putting two and two together.

"Hope, you kept Hope safe for me... And you saved my life" Sam looked into Deans eyes. "I don't know if I could ever repay you, or if I deserve it necessarily but..."

"Wait, what do you mean not deserve it?" Dean's shocked voice cuts Sam off. "Don't you even think for one moment that you don't deserve to be saved. Your my little brother, you're my responsibility and I'm goin to protect you until the day I die"

Sam's eyes are glassy and wet. He feels undeserving but will not mention it again. "Thank you" squeezing Deans hand again, then letting go so Dean can let go if he doesn't want to be caught holding his little brothers hand. Dean keeps hold of his hand until he falls asleep.

Dean extracts his hand from Sam's and walks out the door, knowing that he will have to go back in to check on him in an hour or so.

Bobby is sitting at the table with Hope and Caleb who had turned up at the yard moments after them, helping Dean take his unconscious brother inside and into his room, then sat opposite Bobby and watched her with fascination. "I just can't believe Sam has a rugrat. I would have thought you would have a kid first, by accident mind you but you understand" he laughs at his own joke, at Deans expense and ducks his head as Dean takes a playful swing at him.

"Hey, I always use protection, there is not going to be any baby's turning up on my doorstep" Dean says to Caleb chuckling. "I am more than happy being Uncle Dean rather than Daddy Dean"

Bobby joins in chuckling at them. Getting up and moving towards Hope's change table where he lays her down to change her nappy and get her into her pajamas. "Hey Caleb you wanna change her? She's nice and fresh" Bobby playfully offers the other hunter and chuckles as he pulls a disgusted face. Hope squeals and starts clapping when Dean also joins in.

"Ah, no thanks Grandpop. You're better at cleaning up Shhhh" Dean slaps the back of his head to prevent him from swearing.

"Ow, hey watch it. What was that for? Caleb asks bewildered.

"Don't swear in front of Hope, she might repeat it, she's just starting to talk and everything we say might be repeated" Dean answered.

"Ok, okay, I'll keep it PG" Caleb replies while watching Bobby expertly change the little girl, then dress her in her pyjamas while distracting her from what he was doing so she didn't feel like she was being left out.

"It's alright little one. You have to get ready for bed, it's been a long day. You can play some more in the morning" Bobby says to his granddaughter in a sing song voice. When he looks up Caleb and Dean are both looking at him with different expressions, Dean was amused but Caleb looked at him like he had horns.

"Hey, when you have to deal with little kids, sometimes you have to act a little silly. Oh, just... keep your mouth shut, ya idjit!" Bobby then walks to the quest room and walks quietly inside with Hope snuggled in his arms.

Dean and Caleb look at each other and start laughing, but shush them themselves to do it quieter when they realize that Bobby would be trying to get Hope to sleep.

Getting up to pour himself another coffee, Dean smiles to himself, he has been enjoying being part of Sam's little family, getting to know his niece and relearning everything that made his brother who he was. Shaking his head at himself, Caleb notices the motion and asks "What are you having a conversation with yourself over there."

"I was just thinking about the man Sam is now, after everything that's happened to him, with his wife and now the baby and his injuries, I thought after something like that, he would be this hardened, depressed, angry, bitter man, but Sammy's not like that, sure he has his moments, but overall, he somehow gets up out of bed, every morning and keeps going. I'm not sure I could do that" Dean says honestly, like he's had a lot of time to think about it.

"Well, I don't know much about it all, other than what Bobby told me" Caleb said, watching Dean as he spoke, "He called me, you know, asked me if I had heard from you or your father" He sees Deans face go white. "I told him that you guys had fallen off the grid. I hadn't heard from you in months. Were did you get too Dean? Why weren't you answering any of our calls?" His tone isn't accusatory, more curious and worried that perhaps they had been in danger.

"Well Caleb, you know how Dad can be, after Sam left, he didn't want to speak about him, see him or anything that reminded Dad of him. Which in our job, can be anywhere, for weeks library's were a no go area. I wanted to call Sam to make sure he got to college Ok, ask him to forgive me for not speaking up, I mean I was so shocked, I stood still, in a daze. I said nothing to stop him or to stop anything that Dad said. As far as Sam knew, I believed everything that Dad had said, that didn't sit right with me. But every time I tried to call, I couldn't press the call button. So I chickened out and did nothing, then weeks turned into months, which made it harder to call. Then we went on an undercover hunt in Louisiana for 5 months, with no reception or Internet access. When we got out of their, our phones had either been lost or broken beyond repair. We didn't get any of those messages you guys had left" Dean finally looks up from his boots to Caleb's face, disappointment clearly seen though the tired features.

"If your Daddy wanted to be contactable, he would have found a way, and I'm betting he checked his messages every chance he got, but didn't care. I'm sorry to say this son but your Daddy couldn't get past his own pigheadedness to call anyone back because Sam defied him. I can't forgive that. I would have a hard time saying anythin nice to the man if he walked into this room at this very moment"

Dean nodded his head in agreement then turned quickly when a figure appeared at the doorway. "Well, I better get ready then Caleb cause here I am" John Winchester stood in the doorway of the lounge room looking at the two hunters he hadn't a seen in who knew how long, looking tired, haggard and in desperate need of a shower.

"DAD! What the f#%k, are you doing here?" Dean stood up so fast his chair was knocked to the floor with a loud bang, Caleb's chair squeaked over Bobby's linoleum as he rushed to stand beside him.

"John as I live and breath, where the HELL have you been?!" Caleb hands clenched and unclenched as he stood there trying to hold back a rush of anger.

Suddenly the guest room door opened and Bobby carefully closed it behind him and looked up ready to say something to the two guests in his house who had been making so much racket, then he saw the newest addition to the guest list and he strode over to John and without saying a word punched him one right in the jaw with all the power he could muster, all the pent up rage and disappointment he had felt about how the man in front if him had treated his youngest son coming out with such force that John staggered back hitting the wall behind him. "You son of a b#?&h! How could you come strolling into my house, like you own the place, after all this time, I aughta clock ya again!" Bobby says shaking out his now aching hand.

"Hey, hey, hey, stop! What did I do?" John said holding his jaw, it felt like Bobby may have cracked his jaw with that blow, he picked himself up and stood where he was.

"What did you do?! Are you freakin kidding me! What... I... Why... You... Grrr" Bobby started pacing, trying to get a hold on his emotions, he had a injured young man and a baby to think about sleeping in the next room. Caleb put a hand on his shoulder to hold him back.

"Dad, what happened to you, why are you here?" Dean asked the man who he used to look up too, but now, with him standing in front of him, all he saw was a man who was obsessed with getting revenge, and forgot about his sons on the way. "You've been incommunicado for months. What exactly do you want?" Dean asked coming to the conclusion that the only reason his dad would come out the woodwork now would be for selfish reasons.

"Well, I wanted to see you boys, I've heard some stories through the grapevine" John says to Dean with a look of pride on his face.

"Yeah well, how do you know that we want to see you. After what Sam's been through... you ignored him... and I didn't want to know, because you twisted everything, do you have ANY idea what's happened to him in the last eighteen months? What his life is like now?" Deans voice had risen to a yell by the end, his face red and eyes teary.

"No Dean, I don't know, maybe you could shed some light on all this?" John had straightened up to his full height, trying to use his bulk to make his son back off from his accusatory tone and his blatant disrespect.

"John?" Sam was sitting bleary eyed, in his wheel chair, with a crying Hope in his arms, at the guest bedrooms doorway. "Is this enough light for you?" Sam punches out to the man who used to be his father?

John snapped his head toward the new voice and his eyebrows shot up seeing the state of his son. "Sam, your in a wheel chair? And what are you doing with that baby?" Shocked to his core.

"Well, Dad! The yellow-eyed demon killed my wife and when I tried to save our daughter, I landed hard on the ground outside of our apartment and I crushed my spinal cord. I'm learning to walk again but it's slow going" Sam finishes by looking down, feeling his anger deplete and shame take over, burying his face in his daughters neck for comfort and to mask the pain he was feeling in his back.

Dean watched his little brother and after all the crap their father had put him through, he wasn't going to let him diminish his brothers hard work. "Dad, you've missed a lot, we've missed a lot"

"Yeah, I'm starting to see that" John says softly, he couldn't believe everything that his son had said but the evidence was right in front of him, his youngest son was a father, and he, himself was a grandfather and to top it all off, his baby boy was living in a wheelchair. He had failed as a father in so many ways. "I turned off my phone

"Look this is a rather touching family reunion but Sam needs his medicine and Hope needs her bottle. Let's everybody move to the kitchen. John get your butt over here now" Bobby points to John and then points to the back door and quickly moves away from the others so he can talk to him with a little privacy, John followed with his head down, knowing he was about to be chewed out buy the man who was like a brother to him.

"Listen to me now John, you are not to upset that boy while you are under my roof, if you upset him, insult him or do anything to get him too riled up, I will shoot you so full of buck shot you will make a metal detector go off just by going into the room as one, you get me!?" Bobby was so mad, his face was red and he could feel his blood pressure going to nuclear levels.

"Oh, Ok, is that all or?" John asks half sarcastically, half scared shitless.

"Or I could kill you, you pick? He has been through too much, to have you stomp your huge boots all over everything he's been able to rebuild of his shattered life" Bobby tells him vehemently.

"Ok, I'll keep that in mind Bobby" John looks at Bobby in the eyes to show his honesty. "I promise, I'll minded my P's and Q's"

"You better!. Sam is... And Hope... Both of them, have been a blessing to me, in this house. He didn't have anyone else, I had a spare room and I promised to help him in any way I could. As much as you are his biological father, they are MY family now and Sam has had a stable home life since he got here, he needed someone to rely and I was it. Don't you dare try to take that away from both of us, you lost that right"

Bobby had turned around and was stalking toward the kitchen, John stood where he was, thinking about what Bobby had said. He had been replaced in his sons life by someone far better at being a father than himself, especially to his youngest who had been contrary since birth, he bucked against Johns strict brand of parenthood at every turn, Dean had tried to tell him that encouragement and patience were his friend when it came to the youngest member of their family, but he had stuck to his guns and pushed and pushed the youngest Winchester until he pushed him to Stanford, where supposedly his life really turned to shit.

He turned around to walk towards the kitchen when he sees a small photograph in an partially burned ornate picture frame with a very happy couple on their wedding day. Sam and the mysterious wife that Sam had lost, presumably in a similar manner to his own wife when Sam was six months old. His youngest son shouldn't have had to live through something like that, by the look of things even though he had lost so much, he had come through it with his sanity and his family, safe, happy and normal. Or as normal as he could make it.

He continued to walk towards the kitchen, hearing the three men laughing at some joke one of them had made, his granddaughter giggling at them, he felt like an outsider. He vowed to prove that he could be trusted to be a part of this funny little crazy quilt family.

"Hey Ah, sorry" John walked in, his head down as he walked past them all, interrupting their conversation and barging in like a bull in a china shop.

"So, you have your tail between your legs I see, what have ya got to say for yourself then?" Caleb asked, crossing his arms in front of his body.

"Ah, well... Ummm. Ok look, I don't have any excuses that your going to believe so let's leave it at that. I was wrong and obviously I made the wrong choice" John said, building up to looking Sam in the face, his youngest son however not meeting his eyes.

"Pa can you pass me my pills" Sam asks Bobby quietly, while feeding Hope, his face scrunching in pain. Oblivious to his fathers shocked face at such blatant defiance.

"Sure Sam, here you are, don't forget your anti-inflamitries" Bobby says to Sam, going along with his show of defiance. John deserved some of his own medicine, being ignored sucked.

Clearing his throat, trying not to show that it hurt for his son to call Bobby, Pa. "I know that's not a good enough reason, not by a long shot, but I was messed up, have been for a long time, I can't explain why" John was watching his sons, the emotions that crossed their faces as he spoke. "But... I would like the opportunity to make it up to you both, if I can?"

"I'm not sure if there is anything that you could possibly do that could make up for years of bad parenting, I gotta say I'm glad I had Dean. I'm not trying to be cruel Dad but after everything I've been through, I've had ALOT of time to think, Dean was a better parent than you ever were, and now I have Bobby." Sam spoke with confidence and resignation.

"Sam... You're right... I'm sorry, but your right, I forgot all about that side of me, when I was hunting, I left all domestic duties to Dean and he do them without question. I'm so sorry that he had to do that, but you boys were so close growing up, the perfect team for a long time. I'm sorry that I made Dean choose when you went to Stanford, hell, I'm sorry that you thought you had to escape to Stanford just to be normal" Sam was looking John straight in the eyes by the end, gauging whether he was being honest. Seeing nothing but truth in his weathered face Sam looked at Dean who was watching his reaction.

"Da.. John, I don't know what to say to that... I've had to deal with a lot of stuff, especially these last couple of years. I... I lost my wife, the same way you did... and... I thought I would have this great epiphany and finally understand why you did what you did, but really all it did was make me determined not to do that to my daughter. She will understand what's out there but I'm not forcing her to be part of the life. I want her to be a doctor, lawyer, mechanic anything she wants and I'll be there for her every step of the way"

Knowing that he would have a hard time convincing his youngest son that he could trust him or that he was remorseful of what he had neglected to do throughout his life. He focused on the rulers he had heard. "Umm, Can you tell me what happened to you guys, I heard rumours about a big time demon being taken down. Was that you?" Changing the subject seemed to brighten everyone at the table.

"Yeah, I'd love to know that too. Bobby just asked me to come down to help with warding this place. Surely it's like Fort Knox here already?"

"It was but we had a visit from some rather determined demons and they made it past our defenses to get into the house. So Dean and I came up with some ideas to secure the place and we asked Cal to come help us complete it but... Well we had bigger problems" Bobby said sarcastically, looking over at Dean.

"The demons wanted Hope for the yellow eyed demon" Johns eyebrows rose at this. "When we didn't give her to them and Sam exorcised them, they came after Sam at his therapy session, demons had possessed the therapists and kidnapped Sam to force our hand and give Hope to them no questions asked" Dean said to his father who had leaned forward in interest.

"Why would old yellow eyes want Hope so badly?" John asked, looking from Dean to Bobby, resting finally on Sam who had his head down as if what he was about to say was hard for him.

"My wife, Jess made a deal, to bring me back from the dead, she promised to let yellow eyes some time with Hope when she was 6 moths old, but she disturbed him before he could do what he wanted and he... He burned her on the ceiling... He... Killed my wife and..." Sam couldn't finish what he was trying to say, tears had streamed down his cheeks, embarrassment caused him to roll away with Hope, from the table to have a few minutes alone to collect himself.

"Sam, lost a lot that night, and has since. Let's just say, he understands exactly what you went through. So can we not ask him about his wife... my sister-in-law, gave me my niece, so she deserves to rest in piece"

"I won't to to know how yellow eyes finally bit the dust?" Caleb said to Dean intrigued "How'd you do it Deano?" Caleb knew the mans skill and agility as a hunter was second to none.

"Woah, yellow eyes? You guys killed that Sonofabi... Sob?, how, with what?" John asked, this was the demon who had taken his wife from him, had left their sons motherless.

"I didn't do anything... He was about to infect Hope with his blood, when he started glowing like his blood was burning" Dean looked over at Sam who was wiping his eyes and trying to gather himself. "I think it might have been her brooch, I saw an inscription on it hidden in the filigree, 'tego texi tectum' I think it said"

Sam's head shot up over to Dean, red swollen eyes blinking, "It's a Protection spell, to 'hide, protect and shield', it's old school magic" Sam whispered in awe. "I remember reading about it, in one of Bobby's old books" even after all these years and a different career path, he still kept his hand in to supernatural knowledge.

"What do you mean, 'engraving' I didn't ask for an engraving" John said, looking around for Hope and the brooch so he could get another look at it. It had been months since he had gone to a special mystic jeweller who would make him something for his granddaughter with semi precious stones, in the shape of a pentagon, he left all design elements to the jeweller. Obviously he had also taken creative liberties with the protective elements as well. Bobby walked over the Sam and unpinned the brooch from hopes outfit. Placing his hand on Sam's shoulder for a second to offer comfort, then he placed his hand on his head in an affectionate manner, letting him know that he was there and that he could take all the time he needed, then walked back to John handing him the brooch.

"There are more words hidden here, 'salutes at dile tionem in familiam' something family, my latin's rusty" John said to the other hunters in the room.

"I think it's, 'Safety in love and family'" Sam says to the room, then looks up seeing everyone looking at him. "I became pretty fluent in college. I took Latin classes with my pre-law degree" Sam explains, ducking his head when everyone had surprised expressions on their faces but Dean. He just looked proud.

"Well, I'd say it was time well spent Sam my boy" John said smiling, not realising the uncomfortable looks on Sam's and Bobby's face and the 'my boy' even if it is true.

"I'm impressed, does that get you a lot of dates does it? Caleb asked sarcastically trying to lighten the mood.

"Ah no, not particularly but Jess did like it when I would said 'animam meam dilectam' at our wedding" Sam says embarrassed by the admission.

"Yeah, that's... I don't know what that means" Dean says to Sam making him smirk at him, bringing his mood back up and jerking his head to motion Sam back over to the table.

"It means, 'My passion, my love, my life' she had it tattooed on her shoulder blade" Sam spoke to Dean, trying to block out the other people in the room. Dean turned so he was facing his brother, easing the discomfort. "We would sleep spooned together, she was the little spoon. Anyway, I would always kiss her good night on her shoulder, so one year for my birthday, she had it tattooed on her shoulder as a gift" Sam's eyes were tears and he was smiling at the memory, then his face changed cheekily.

"Ahh Sammy, your one lucky man" Dean was smiling back at him.

Sam chuckles at that smile, "Nine months later, Hope was born..." Still laughing Sam moves his head towards his father. "I was terrified, and thrilled at the same time... I wanted to call you... get some words of wisdom, but... I was more scared that you wouldn't answer or you'd hang up on me..."

"Ah Sammy, I wouldn't have... I'm proud of you, really... the man you've become and your a daddy now... I know I've failed as a father, to both of you, maybe I can make up for it as a grandfather, if you'll let me?" John cast hopeful eyes toward Sam.

"We'll see" Sam said shacking his head, his heart beating, not used to being able to actually TALK to his father and him listen to what he has to say. "I'm sorry but theres too much, if you want to be part of Hopes life, great, but like with Dean, you have to prove your not going to... break her heart" Sam says adamantly.

"Or yours either Sam" Bobby chimed in, knowing that Sam wouldn't mention his own pain at being abandoned. "He doesn't need more disappointment" Bobby pointed his finger at John.

"Hey, now, don't point your finger at me. Who do you think you are?" John starts in on Bobby, anger and resentment in his voice.

"Enough stop it! Look, I'm not some bone for you guys to fight over. John, yes your my father but Bobby is my Pa, your both important in my life, I mean I wouldn't be here, literally if it weren't for both of you but Bobby has filled in the gaps for the last couple of years. He's important to me so back off" Sam almost yells, not allowing John to stake his clim where it wasn't needed.

"Yeah guys, seriously stop with the bickering and the 'mines bigger than yours', can't we just say we're family, no matter what we call each other" Dean chimps in.

"Ok, so can I ask a question that I don't think anyone has asked yet? Just to redirect the conversation, I mean if you want to squabble some more, go ahead" Caleb said looking at Bobby, then Sam and Dean, finally at John who looked still out by Sam's outburst and his disagreement with Bobby.

"Ask away, Cal" Bobby said gratefully, not wanting to get into an argument, for Sam's sake, for Hopes sake.

"Why was the Latin spell so potent for old yellow eyes, from what you've told me, he tried to bleed into her and the brooch made him burn to a crisp, then disintegrate into hot air and ash. That's not something that happens often, and John said it wasn't his idea" Caleb was a little worried that whoever had put the spell work or magic into the brooch, may want something in return for the help.

"I don't know, maybe the combination to all the elements, the stones all have protective qualities, the spell and maybe the man who created it, put something into too" Bobby said thinking through the possibilities.

"And maybe the Hope stone, it was your mothers Sam, I thought it was serendipity when I found out what you named her. The stone was on a necklace that I would always steal from your mothers' dresser and she would steal it back at the end of the day. I carried it around while I was workings and throughout the day, I would touch it and rub it, thinking about her and you kids" John was talking, looking at his hands, locked in his memories. Then he looked up and saw Sam watching him, watching for a hint of a lie.

"Well that's quite a combination" Bobby quipped back.

"I recited the spell in front of yellow eyes and held onto Hope before she was ripped out of my hands, so maybe the combination of those things was too powerful. He just didn't have a Hope... in hell" Dean said back to Bobby, it seemed like a great piece of luck that such a small piece of jewellery killed the monster that had ruined the Winchester lives not once but twice.
