Chapter 3: Friday Night Bites
Dear Diary,
How do you get two stubborn pigheaded brothers to stop fighting and get a long? Honestly, I have no idea. I've tried to stop it, attempting time and time again to get them to forget this feud but they won't listen. They're so focused on the past that they refuse to see a future. I just want them to be happy. At least Stefan is trying; Damon just seems to not care. Though Stefan has made it quite clear he wants nothing to do with Damon. Is this really what it has come to? Are we now strangers to our own family? No, I won't believe that. I know they still care. I know there is still is good in Damon and I know Stefan does too. I just hope I can find them, before they get too lost.
Always,
Clara Salvatore
I roll my eyes just having witnessed Tyler attempt to hit Stefan with a football, but my brother caught it and threw it back at Tyler full force causing said idiot to stumble back a bit. I laugh at his and Matt's bewildered faces as they looked at Stefan. If they only knew. I continue my way into the school when someone rammed into me. I squealed as I almost fell over but due to my fast vampire reflexes I'm able to quickly steady myself.
"Sorry." The person mumbles. I immediately recognize the voice and look up to see a sad looking Jeremy about to walk away.
"Jeremy?" I say causing him to turn around.
"Oh, hi Clara." He says.
"Hi, um you okay? You look…sad." I ask walking towards him.
"Yeah, fine." He replies quickly, his gaze on the floor. "Look I gotta get to class, I'll talk you later."
I raise my eyebrows. "Since when do you care about class?"
There was a glimpse of a smile on his face before it quickly faded to a frown.
"I just gotta go okay," He says finally looking up at me. His eyes are glassy, which I knew met he was high but they also held the same sadness that has been there since I met him. I give him a smile and nod knowing he just wanted some time alone. He flashes another quick smile then walks inside the school.
"Well if it isn't Mr. Show Off." I smirk sitting next to Stefan on the bleachers. Stefan gives me a look and I laugh. "I heard about how you basically told off Mr. Tanner with your history skills."
Stefan rolls his eyes. "I didn't tell him off, he asked me history questions and I answered them."
"Uh huh, whatever you say bro." I grin. "He totally deserved it though, dudes a jerk."
Stefan laughs, "True,"
"So, are you thinking about joining the football team?" I ask motioning to the schools team practicing on the football field.
He nods. "It's been a while since I've done anything normal."
"Well, you are good and you do love football. Why not give it a shot?" I tell him.
"Alright, I will." He says standing up.
I grin. "Cool, I gotta see this."
Stefan shakes his head and starts to walk off the bleachers.
"Good luck! Oh and tackle Tyler for me!" I yell. He looks at me and laughs as he continues to walk towards Mr. Tanner who was also the coach. Just as Stefan walked up to him, I saw Tyler walk up to Matt as the two watched Stefan talk to Mr. Tanner. I listened into my brother and Tanners conversation laughing when Stefan almost corrected him again but stopped himself after Tanner gave him a look. Tanner tells him to get a uniform and Stefan nods looking surprised before running off to get one. I grin giving him a thumbs up as he leaves to which he smiles before running to the boys locker rooms.
Dude, this is an opportunity. Football is a contact sport. Sometimes people get hurt.
I turn to Tyler, hearing him speak. I see him put on his helmet before patting Matt's shoulder and cheering. What is that supposed to mean?
A few minutes later Stefan returned to the football field dressed in a red football uniform.
"Whoo! Go Stefan!" I cheer clapping as my brother walked onto the field. I watched them play for almost a half an hour and Stefan seemed to be having fun, though Matt still seemed upset and Tyler was purposely trying to get him hurt. His ass is dead if he does. I continue to watch them practice when Stefan jumps up to catch the ball, but Tyler comes out of nowhere and throws him down. I frown, so that's what he meant. Tyler gets up and walks over to Stefan smirking.
Welcome to the team, buddy
I narrow my eyes at him. Why the heck is purposely hurting Stefan?
I saw Matt walk over and help Stefan up saying it was his bad. I glance at the two confused, watching as Matt walks away. Stefan pulls off his gloves, looking at his hand before fixing his broken finger. I turn to Tyler and glare at him. His ass is so dead.
Dude, that girl looks like she wants to kick your ass. I hear one of the guys tell Tyler causing me to smirk.
Tyler looks up at me, and I continue to glare at him. He quickly turns away and walks toward his other teammates. That's right Tyler, be afraid, be very afraid.
A half an hour later practice was finally finished so, while Stefan changed back into his regular clothes I decided to wait for him in front of the school. I sat on the grass and began to read Romeo and Juliet, it was one of my favorite books and we were reading it in our English class. I got through a page before I heard someone call my name. I look up and smile when I see Jeremy walk towards me.
"Hey Clara." He smiles.
"Hi Jer," I say. "What's up?"
"Nothing, just got out of detention. That was fun." He replies sarcastically.
I laugh. "Sounds like it."
He smiles. "So what are you doing here?"
"I'm waiting for Stefan to get out of the locker room, he tried out for the Football Team." I tell him.
Jeremy nods. "Cool, speaking of your brother. My sister invited him to have dinner with her and Bonnie. Apparently Bonnie doesn't like him."
"Oh yeah, Stefan told me about that." I say. "But uh, why are you telling me this?"
"Because, I really don't feel like conversing with others today and I also don't feel like sitting up in my room bored so wanna come over?"
I raise my eyebrows. "So, you want me to come over to hang out in your room while our siblings and Bonnie have dinner down stairs?"
He grins. "Yeah, pretty much. Plus I also wanted to do something to apologize for this morning. I just-"
"Didn't feel like conversing with others?" I finish smiling.
"Yeah, that." He laughs. "So, will you?"
"Sure, sounds fun."
"Ugh, where is it?" I yell searching around my room for my black flats. I wanted to wear them to Jeremy's but I couldn't find them anywhere. I walked out of my room and sped downstairs to see if left them down there. I had searched the living room and found them underneath the couch. Sighing in relief I grabbed them, then stood up and gasped when I saw Damon smirking at me.
"Do you have do that?" I ask annoyed once I calmed down.
"Yup." He replies. "So, I heard you were hanging out with Baby Gilbert."
"And you care because?" I retort raising my eyebrows.
"I'm your big brother Clara, it's my job to make sure mean boys don't break your heart." He explains an amused grin on his face.
I roll my eyes. "Whatever, Damon. Don't you have someone else to bug?"
"Wow that hurts Clara. Here I am trying to look out for you and that's the treatment I get?" He says as if it really bothered him, I knew otherwise.
I looked at him. "Really Damon?"
He laughs. "What? I just find this whole…thing funny that's all."
"Find what funny?" I ask as I slip on my flats.
He smirks. "You'll see."
I sigh. "What are you up to Damon?"
"What makes you think I'm up to something?" He grins.
"I know you that's why." I reply as I turn to him, folding my arms. "Perché si deve essere così difficile fratello?"
He frowns. "E come è che sorella?"
"I know there's something here you want. You've made that pretty obvious last night and I know you'll stop at nothing to get it, but I also know that there is good in you. That some part of you still cares." I say as I walk closer to him. He stares at me his face expressionless, I sigh and continue. "Look Damon, I don't know what you want, but I know what you'll do to get it, so please don't hurt anyone…if not for them, then for me."
"And what makes you think, I'd do anything for you?" He retorts, eyes flashing dangerously.
I looked at him, trying to hide the hurt of his words off my face. "Because, I'm your sister...E ancora tengo a te grande fratello."
Damon stared at me for a moment, his face still unreadable. I didn't know what he was thinking, but I hoped he took what I said to heart, because I met every word of it. After a long minute of silence he turned and walked away. I sighed, plopping down on the couch as I watched him walk outside. He didn't spare me a glance, even while he closed the door. What was he thinking?
I felt Stefan beside me a second later. I know he heard our conversation like I heard theirs a few minutes ago. He placed a hand on my shoulder and I looked up at him.
"You know there's still good in him don't you?" I ask, my voice quiet.
Stefan sighs but nods. "I do, but it's up to Damon to choose what to do with it."
That worried me. Would Damon choose to hold on to whatever was left of his heart or would he throw it all away and succumb to the darkness?
"Okay, what's wrong?" Jeremy asks turning to me. We were in his room sitting on his bed eating the pasta we stole from Elena, Stefan and Bonnie's dinner and talking about pretty much everything. Though, I started thinking about Damon again and my mind began to drift off as I thought about the earlier conversation I had with Damon and what had Stefan had told me.
I looked up at him breaking out of my thoughts. "What do you mean?"
He raises his eyebrows. "You've been staring at your pasta for five minutes."
I laugh. "Sorry, I just have a lot on my mind."
"Your brothers?" He guessed.
I nod. "Yes, well one of them. But, I don't really want to talk about it."
"Alright, so are you going to the football game tomorrow night?" Jeremy asks taking a sip of his coke.
"Yeah, I figure I'd be a good sister and cheer Stefan on, it's his first game after all." I say and he laughs. "Are you?"
"Probably, some of my friends are going so I figure what the hell." He tells me.
I raise my eyebrows. "Let me guess they're bringing pot or beer or both."
"Yup." He grins.
"Of course, speaking of…how come you were so upset this morning?" I ask.
"Oh, it's nothing." He replies nervously.
"Let me guess, Vicki?" I say mocking him from earlier.
He sighs. "Yeah, but I don't want to talk about it."
"Okay, that's fair since I-" I froze sensing Damon at the door. What the hell is doing? "Damon's here?"
Jeremy looks at her confused. "What?"
I frown and focused my hearing downstairs. I heard Elena open the door and Caroline mention something about desert then Stefan walked up to Damon.
What are you doing here?
Waiting for Elena to invite me in.
Don't invite him in Elena.
Oh Yeah, you can-
"No, no, no. He can't um…he can't stay. Can you Damon?
Really? Stefan that's all you got.
Get in here.
Not helping Caroline.
We're just finishing up.
It's fine, just come on in.
Seriously?
"Clara? Clara!"
"Huh? What?" I jump, turning to Jeremy who is looking at me confused.
"Are you okay? You kinda zoned out…I think." He says.
"Oh, sorry I heard Damon downstairs and I guess I was lost in thought." I reply quietly.
You have a beautiful home Elena.
Crap, Damon is inside.
I know you're listening Clara.
My eyes widen. How did he-
Because I know you.
Ugh brothers are annoying. Wait, is that what's he's doing? Annoying Stefan? Really, he doesn't have anything else better to do? And why is he with Caroline? What is he planning?
"Clara?"
"What?" I ask turning to Jeremy again. He looks at me and I start to feel guilty for not paying attention. "Sorry, it's just-"
"Damon?" He finishes. "You're still upset with him aren't you?
I sigh, looking away. "Yeah, it's just hard…"
"Wanna leave?" He asks.
"Huh?"
He laughs. "I thought we could go to the Grill or something. It would be better than hanging here all night…and you won't have to deal with both your brothers."
"Oh, um…sure." I smile. "Why not, but can we sneak out? I do not want to walk though the awkwardness that will be their conversation."
"Sure." He chuckles. "But, we're going to have to climb down a tree, are you up for that?"
Clara smirks. "Oh please, I've gone cliff diving and bungee jumping. I can handle climbing down a tree."
Jeremy's eyes widen. "No way? Really?"
"Yup, but we can talk about that later. Let's go!"
"So, maybe this wasn't the best idea." Clara sighs watching Jeremy stare at Vicki and Tyler jealousy and anger clear in his eyes.
"Ya think?" He snaps annoyed.
"Don't get mad at me! It was your idea!" I reply. We decided to go to Mystic Grill, but Jeremy seemed to forget Vicki worked here and since he was currently angry at her, it wasn't helping there let's forget about everything situation.
"Sorry," He sighs.
It was silent for a while until Matt came over from the pool table and stood by Jeremy, a cue stick in his hand.
He sighs. "She's my sister and I love her…but sometimes she can really make you work for it."
"I find it pretty easy." Jeremy says then stands up and walks away. Yeah, I don't really want to know that that means but did he seriously just leave me here? Matt looks at me and I let out a sigh of my own.
"He's in a bad mood." I explain.
"You don't look to happy either." He says.
"Brother issues." I tell him. "And now I gotta go get Jeremy, before he leaves without me." Matt raises his eyebrows. "Okay, so we might have snuck out of the house…don't tell anyone."
Matt laughs. "Uh huh, sure."
I roll my eyes and get up, but before I could say anything I see Jeremy shove Tyler and frown. Matt sees this and turns around noticing Tyler and Jeremy as well. We glance at each other worriedly and walk over to them.
"Oh, now you're dead." Tyler says.
"Am I? It seems like I'm standing here waiting for you to man up." Jeremy retorts.
Tyler glares at him and goes to hit him but Matt grabs him from behind and holds him back.
"The next time I see you, Gilbert." Tyler says as Matt pushes him away.
"No, the next time I see you." Jeremy tells him walking away.
I groan and follow him outside. "Jeremy!"
"What?" He yells.
"Okay, I know you're mad at Tyler and Vicki but you don't need to take it out on me, I didn't do anything." I say.
He sighs. "Sorry, again."
"It's okay, you're upset. I understand." I tell him placing a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe we should go to back to your house before-" My phone starts ringing cutting me off. I sigh and answer it. "Hello?"
"Clara? Where the hell are you?"
"Stefan?"
Jeremy laughs. "Good timing."
I roll my eyes. "Shut up."
"What?" Stefan asks.
"Not you. I'm at the Grill with Jeremy. We were just about to leave." I explain.
"And you decided to sneak out and go there because?" Stefan says.
"I'll explain later, we're going back to the house. Just relax." I tell him.
Stefan sighs. "Well hurry, we have…Damon issues to discuss."
"Ugh, don't we have enough of those?" I reply.
Stefan chuckles. "Apparently not, I'll see you when you get here."
"Fine, see you." I sigh hanging up the phone.
"Let me guess, Stefan and Elena are freaking out." Jeremy says
I nod. "Yup, we better go."
Jeremy nods and we head back to the house.
"Clara, have you seen Damon?" Stefan asks as he walks over to me. We were both at the big football game at the school. There were students, parents and teachers everywhere talking, laughing, eating and some drinking. It was about a half an hour before the game started and I had to say I was excited, it's been awhile since I've seen Stefan play. Unfortunately, we had a problem in the form of our older and very dangerous brother: Damon.
I shake my head. "No, I haven't seen him all day. Why?"
He sighs. "I'm worried he's going to try something again, and since neither of us has seen him today it only increases my worry."
"Stef, he's not going to attack anyone with this many people around." I tell him quietly. "He knows it could expose us."
He frowns. "Either way we need to keep an eye on him. Can you go and try to find him? Make he doesn't hurt or compel anyone?"
"Do I have to?" I pout. "Why can't just stay here and hang out like a normal person at their big brothers football game."
"As much as I would love for you to do that, if we don't find Damon and he starts attacking people there won't be a football game." Stefan tells me.
I sigh. "Fine, I'll see if I can find him and if I don't see you before the game starts, good luck. Kick some ass."
Stefan laughs and gives me side hug. "Will do. Now go Sorellina."
"Yeah, yeah." I smile walking away.
Why does my brother have to be so diabolically smart? I'm pretty sure he knew I was looking for him and purposely hid somewhere because I've searched everywhere and I couldn't find him. I even ran to the house and the Grill to see if he was still there but he was nowhere to be found. Where the hell is he?
You're hurting him!
Tyler stop!
Is that Vicki? What's going on? I focused my hearing more and gasped when I heard Tyler and Jeremy fighting. I quickly sped to field only to see Tyler holding Jeremy to the ground and hitting his face. I was about to step in and stop them when I saw the blood dripping from Jeremy's mouth. I froze, as its smell reached my nose making my mouth water. No! I shook my head trying to clear it. I had to help Jeremy! I quickly ran over towards them just as Stefan grabbed Tyler's arm. Tyler glared at him and tried to punch him in the stomach, but due to his super strength did nothing to affect him. I saw Jeremy grab the top of a broken beer bottle and held over his head about to attack Tyler.
My eyes widened. "Jeremy no!"
Luckily Stefan saw this as well as he pushed Tyler away and held up his hand blocking Jeremy's attack. I winced as the glass sliced through his hand but I knew he would be okay and heal quickly. Elena gasped and angrily ran towards Jeremy. Sighing, I walked over to Stefan who was staring at his hand.
"You okay?" I ask.
He nods closing his hand, then looks up at me. "Yeah, it's healing."
"Good, what happened?"
"I don't know, Tyler walked away during Tanners speech and they just started fighting." Stefan explains. "And now I don't know what to tell Elena."
I look at him confused. "About what?" He opens his hand showing that the cut had healed. "I don't get it, your hand looks f-oh. Yeah, that may be a little hard to explain."
"Ya think?" He replies. "Did you find Damon?
I shook my head. "Nope, he's nowhere to be found."
Stefan sighs. I notice him glance behind me for second before focusing on me again.
"Elena's walking over." He tells me. I nod knowing this meant to keep everything supernatural at a down low.
"Alright, I'm going to go help Jeremy, I'm glad your okay." I say.
He smiles and I give him a pat on his shoulder before walking away to catch up to Jeremy who was making his way towards the school.
"Jeremy!" I shout trying to get his attention.
He stops and turns around. I give him a small smile as I reach him.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
He sighs. "Yeah, I'm fine."
I raise my eyebrows. "You're bleeding."
Jeremy rolls his eyes. "Whatever."
I chuckled. "Okay, Mr. Stubborn."
He laughs then groans placing a hand on his cheek as his face scrunched in pain.
I frown. "Come on, let's get you cleaned up."
I grabbed his arm and gently pulled him inside the school and to the closet bathroom.
"Whoa, that's the girls bathroom, I am not going in there!" Jeremy says stopping.
I looked at him. "Do you want to bleed to death?"
"I'm not bleeding that bad, I don't think I'm going to bleed to death." Jeremy laughs.
Rolling my eyes and ignoring his shouts of protest I pulled him inside.
"Oh, get over it." I tell him.
"Why can't we go into the boys bathroom, it's like a foot away!" Jeremy asks as I bring towards one of the sinks.
"Yeah, but this one is still closer and I really don't want to go into the boys bathroom." I say getting some paper towels and wetting them.
"Really?" He exclaims.
I laugh. "Just hold still."
He sighs and does as he's told as I gently dab at his cut lip. He winces a bit but doesn't complain. This would be easier if I could just heal him, but that would require feeding him my blood and I couldn't do that. I guess, I'm going to have to do this the old fashioned way. We stayed in a comfortable silence for a bit until I finished cleaning his cut and placed another dry towel on it.
"Alright, all good." I say. "But, you still have blood in your mouth you may want to rinse that out."
He nods, so I remove the towel and he rinses out his mouth. Once he was finished I gave him the towel and he places the towel back on his lip.
"Thanks." He says as we walk out of the bathroom.
"No problem," I smile. "And I promise not to tell anyone you went into the girl's bathroom."
He faces becomes a bright red causing me to giggle.
"Aw, your blushing." I tease.
"Shut up." He replies. I laugh as we walk out of the school. We had just reached the parking lot when I felt something rush by us. I immediately stopped walking, when I realized who it was.
"Damon." I whisper.
"What?" Jeremy asks.
"Um, nothing." I tell him. "I have to go check on Stefan. I think he hurt his hand from the…"
He sighs. "Right, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean too…I was just-"
"Drunk?" I finish. He looks away. "Look, its okay. No one got seriously hurt, that's all that matters."
He nods but continues to stare at the ground.
"Jeremy, it's okay." I whisper giving him a hug. He froze for a minute and I was afraid hugging him was a bad idea, but then I began to feel him relax and his arms wrap around me. I smiled and rested my head against his chest.
"Everything will be okay." I tell him. "You just have to be strong."
"I don't know if I can." He whispers.
"You can, I know it. I believe in you." I say quietly.
"Thank you." He says
"For what?" I ask.
"Everything."
I smile. "You're welcome."
We break from the hug and I look up at him. He smiles at me, and I could help but melt into a pile of mush on the floor. Man, I could just stare into those gorgeous eyes forever…ugh, but I can't.
"Um, I really have to go…." I tell him, reluctantly.
"Oh, uh right. See you later?" He asks.
I winked. "Of course."
"Cool." He smiles. "I think I'm gonna head home."
I nod. "Okay and you're walking right?"
He rolls his eyes. "Yes mom."
"Shut up." I reply laughing. He chuckles and after another goodbye he began his walk home and I began my walk to wherever Damon went. I headed towards the field again when I heard Matt apologizing to Stefan for what happened and the way he acted. I quickly sped over appearing behind Matt right as he turned out.
"Whoa!" He jumped, and then relaxed seeing it was me, "Clara? When did you get here? I didn't even hear you walk over."
"Sorry, I heard you and Stefan talking and I didn't want to interrupt so I tried to stay quiet." I explained, ignoring Stefan when he shook his head with a small smile on his face.
"Oh, well next time give a guy a warning before you pop up out of nowhere." Matt smiles.
I laugh. "I'll remember that…maybe."
Matt chuckles. "Anyway, I gotta go the game is about to start. I'll talk you later."
"Kay, bye Matt!" I smile.
"Seeya." He grins as he walks away.
"Nice." Stefan says once Matt is out of earshot. I laugh but before I could reply someone began to clap behind us. We glance at each other, both knowing who it is, then turn to see Damon leaning against the wall with a smirk on his face as always.
"Isn't that nice, Stefan joins a team and makes a friend who also is Clara's friend. It's all so Rah! Rah! Go team! Yeah!" He says as he moving from the wall and pumping his fist.
"Not tonight." Stefan says expressionless. "I'm done with you."
He grabs my arm and we start to walk away but Damon appears in front of us causing us to stop.
"Nice trick with Elena." Damon says looking at Stefan. "Let me guess, vervain in the necklace. I admit, I was a bit surprised. It's been awhile since anyone could resist my…compulsion."
"You gave Elena that necklace?" I ask turning to Stefan knowing which one they were talking about. Stefan nods.
Damon smirks. "Where'd you get it?"
"Does it matter?" Stefan replies.
"Guess I could just seduce her the old fashioned way…" Damon begins. The two of us begin to walk away. "Or I could just eat her."
Stefan turns around. "No, Damon you're not going to eat her."
"No?"
"Because deep down inside there's a part of you that feels for her." Stefan starts. Damon pretends to being falling asleep but Stefan ignores it and continues. "I was worried that you had no humanity left inside of you, that you become the monster that you pretend to be."
He grins. "Who's pretending?"
"Then kill me." I say.
Damon looks at me, his face unreadable.
"Or kill me." Stefan tells him.
Damon turns back to Stefan. "Well, I'm tempted…."
Stefan shakes my head. "No you're not, you've had lifetimes to do it and yet, here we are. We're still alive and there you are. You're still haunting me. After one hundred and forty-five years." Damon doesn't answer. "Katherine is dead. And you hate me because you loved her and you torture me because you still do. And that, my brother, that is your humanity."
"There is good in you Damon, I know it." I say softly. "Why can't you see that?"
"Salvatore!" A voice shouts. We turn to see Mr. Tanner walk over. "What the hell? We've got a game to play!"
Damon looks at Stefan and I. "If that's my humanity and if there's still good in me…then what's this?"
Damon sped to Mr. Tanner and attacked him.
"NO!" Stefan and I scream.
We watched in horror as he tore into Tanner's neck and drank his blood until his eyes rolled into the back of his head and his body became limp. He was dead. Damon dropped Tanners body and looked up at us grinning with his eyes black as night and his fangs dripping with blood.
"Anyone, anytime, anyplace."
A lone tear slid down my face. "How could you?"
"There is nothing good left in me." Damon sneered at the two of us. "And now that you know that, remember it."
"Perché si deve essere così difficile fratello?" I whispered. Damon's eyes turned back to their original ice blue as he looked at me eyes wide with what I wasn't sure, but I knew he was remembering our conversation. I felt more tears fall down my cheeks as I stared at him, his fangs were now gone but the blood still stained his mouth.
I don't know what you want, but I know what you'll do to get it, so please don't hurt anyone…if not for them, then for me.
Aww, this is so sad! Even as I was writing this I was like aww, Damon how could you! At least we do know that Damon does have a heart and there is good in him. Let's just hope he can regain Clara's trust again.
So, what did you think? Please let me know and thanks for reading!
