Ch. 13
Jane, despite her best efforts, let a grin takeover her face much to Maura's chagrin. The pregnant doctor couldn't really blame the curly-headed detective's latest mood, having found the source of her late night discomfort after a cursory examination from her doctor.
Jane reached out her hand, begging Maura to take it as a sign that she only wanted to comfort.
"Are you done finding the situation humorous?" Maura questioned.
Jane shook out her arms and legs as a show her giggles were all gone and adopted a stoic look then, extended her hand once again.
Maura took it and let out a deep breath. All the while, knowing her playful detective wouldn't completely let it go and she was proven right just moments after exiting the doctor's office and into the outside world.
"You can't really blame me for laughing when the culprit of all your pain and discomfort was poop..." Jane said.
"I wouldn't blame a child, such as T.J., for finding it amusing but you, an adult woman, I expected a bit more decorum." Maura whined, adorably.
"You're right. I'm sorry." Jane apoligized, taking both Maura's hands in her own and placing their bodies face to face so she could stare into the eyes of the woman she holds so dear.
Maura slowly changed her features from a slight pout to a full on glowing smile and leaned in for a kiss, Jane, meeting her the rest of the way.
With the time of the due date coming close, (two weeks to be exact) the entire family was on high alert. "Jane! I appreciate you wanting to help but, I am perfectly able to get myself a glass of water." Maura spoke, exhasperatedly.
"Dr. Gomez put you on bed rest and THAT is what you will do...REST in BED." Jane pointedly replied.
"Jane, you know that title that precedes my name?" The testy pregnant woman asked.
"Maura, sweetie..." Jane began to speak, with as much sweetness as she could muster.
Jane contined, "I know you have a medical degree that taught you about all aspects of the human body but, Dr. Gomez specializes in pregnancy and you specialize in dead people. How bout we defer to the specialist on this one?"
Jane knew as soon as the words left her mouth that she was wholly in the wrong and by the look plastered on Maura's face, she was in total agreement.
"Oh! Okay, so when I've reset your brokens bones or kept you from bleeding out after SHOOTING YOURSELF, I'm pretty sure I was working on a live body unless there's something you haven't told me about yourself!" Maura fired back.
This is the point where Jane had learned to tread lightly. She had made the mistake of blaming Maura's emotion outpouring on "pregnancy brain" and Maura had not taken too kindly to the dismissal of her very real and valid feelings.
"I am so sorry, Maur. I didn't mean to belittle your skills as a medical doctor. It's just, Dr. Gomez's birthplan for us has been quite effective so far, minus the tiny scare after the baby shower, and I think we should follow it even more closely now that we're getting near the big day.
"I only want the best for you and this little one." Jane finished while rubbing Maura's stomach.
Just as she began a cirular motion a hard kick was felt by both women and the fight that they were in the middle of was taken over by the awe of the action.
"Looks like we've got a diplomat on our hands." Jane assessed.
"Brokering peace with a simple action." Maura added.
"Must get it from you."
"Must get it from you."
Both women spoke at the same time. And with that, it was as if they had never argued at all.
